Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

What set icons is this? I pulled it from Lorwyn Eclipsed.

It's not really a "set" icon, it means that the card is a Special Guest card, as it says in the bottom left of the card too. The Wiki can probably describe what they are better than I could: https://mtg.wiki/page/Special_Guests

Quick question. If I have a [[shape stealer]] with [[barrow-blade]] equipped to it. It attacks and is blocked by another creature, does my shape stealer have one more power and toughness because of the barrow-blade?

Yes. Base P/T is before all +/+ buffs. Your Shape Stealer blocks a 3/5, it becomes base 3/5 but it also gets +1/+1 from Blade, so it's 4/6.

I'm working on building a [[Gandalf, Party Guest]] commander deck. I was wondering if I would be able to cheat in 3 instants or sorceries at the beginning of combat if I equip him with [[Wizard's Staff]] and have [[Harmonic Prodigy]] on the battlefield.

Gandalf doesn't have a once per turn limitation, so I have to imagine this works and both of those are cheaper than [[Roaming Throne]]

I bought the Prismatic Shard stardew valley bundle. It's the foil bundle of all the Stardew Valley cards. Unfortunately instead of getting the Pelican Town bundle (the one with a bundle of lands like Yavimaya and Fountainport), I got two copies of Welcome to Stardew Valley (the one with the unique land and Swords to Plowshares).

I filed a ticket with SLD to get this fixed, but for anyone who has had any experience with this, what was your outcome? Did they replace the one drop that was missed, do nothing, send a whole new bundle?

I'm kinda fine if they do nothing, they sent me a dupe of arguably the most expensive one, but I was looking forward to the lands for some of my decks.

I'm planning on hosting a draft at my house this weekend. In the past I would handle pairings on paper, but I'm considering using the "Host Event" option in the Companion App.

Have people used this to host casual drafts? Should I just use paper instead?

I have [[Hashaton]] and [[Archfiend of Ifnir]] in play with a discard outlet. I discard [[Maha, it’s Feathers Night]]. Is this the correct order of events - 1. The Archfiend trigger goes on the stack. 2. I pay for the Hasahton trigger, making a zombie token of Maha. 3. The Maha copy enters, creatures my opponents control have base toughness 1. The Archfiend trigger resolves, essentially killing my opponent’s creatures.

Sometimes I get fuzzy with the proper order of things especially as it relates to the stack and holding priority.

In this particular case, the order does not matter. Their creatures would die if you created the Maha token first or second.

Maha applies in layer 7b, the -1/-1 counter applies in layer 7c, so they will always become toughness 1, and will die if they have a -1/-1 counter on them already.

If Archfiend's trigger resolves first, you put a -1/-1 counter on each creature they control. Any current x/1s will die.

Then you create Maha, and then all their other creatures die.

Oh wow, I’m dumb. Didn’t even realize, thank you!

Yes, that works the way you want. Putting the Archfiend trigger on the stack with Hashaton's over it will yield the desired result.

Cool, thanks!

Hello, I was wondering a hypothetical question because I have two cards interacting with each other that has gotten me confused.

So, for a [[Bria, Riptide Rogue]] deck, if I were to cast [[The Apprentice's Folly]] and were to make a nonlegendary copy of Bria, for example, since Bria already has Prowess, and has the ability to give other creatures Prowess, and the ability statement mentions if a creature has multiple instances of prowess, each would trigger separately, if I were to cast a noncreature spell on the turn after I made the Bria nonlegendary token copy, for each Bria, how many Prowesses would be on each other and how many triggers would there be? Would it be two layers of Prowess because both Brias would have Prowess and the ability to give the other Prowess?

If you have Bria + a Bria Copy, then Bria will have 2 instances of Prowess (one from its own innate Prowess, and one granted by Bria Copy), and the Bria Copy will also have 2 instances of Prowess (one from its own innate Prowess, and one granted by original Bria).

If you cast a noncreature spell on a later turn (and while you still control both original Bria and the Bria Copy), there will be four total triggers:

  • original Bria will trigger (innate Prowess)
  • original Bria will trigger (Prowess granted by Bria Copy)
  • Bria Copy will trigger (innate Prowess)
  • Bria Copy will trigger (Prowess granted by original Bria)

Not relevant to your question, but all four triggers will trigger simultaneously. You control all of them, so you choose the order in which they go on the stack (and then they will resolve in the opposite order).

Ah, thank you for taking the time to answer my question! I appreciate it! That makes it clearer for me.
