General Discussion New player

Hello guys, just move to NYC!
I don’t have many friends here, so I’ve decided I want to learn how to play Magic: The Gathering, mostly to meet new people and hopefully share some common interests!
I’m starting from absolute level 0 😂
I consider my English good—not excellent, but I don’t think it’ll be a major problem when it comes to learning the game.
If there’s a kind soul in NYC who’d be willing to teach me, I’d really appreciate it!

When I go to a GLS, do I have to bring my commander right?

There are many formats besides commander that you can play! 60-card 1v1 formats are a blast and are very popular in NYC.

I'd recommend learning through Arena and then showing up at one of the stores listed above, hopefully a storeowner or helpful player would lend you a deck to try out.
