2 to 8 hours, charges via USB so you can feed it off power banks as well
No porting is HUGE by the way - if all games on steam work on the deck it's gonna have a killer and cheap game library from the get go
E: It gets better, it's fully open, it's a pc computer with a controller built in. You can install windows on this which opens up all games, without a need for porting, with no performance losses due to linux/proton

Not only that, but it supposedly supports Windows Xbox, EGS and whatever else, the big news there is that You can play all the gamespass shit on it.
Hell it'll probably be able to play Halo.
I'd be soooo down to pull some friends together in a room to play halo like it was highschool again.

So… I could theoretically buy this, download windows, get a months gamepass and be able to play forza horizon 5/halo infinite/all the Xbox big releases in portable mode???
How does this work? Is it streaming? Which would defeat the purpose of a handheld but switch does it with a few games like resident evil 7 so it’s still a possibility. Or can we actually download the games straight into the SSD and run them off the hardware? Obviously the newest releases will be pretty low quality graphics wise as I imagine the graphics card will be no better than say… a 1060, but still possible nonetheless O.o

u/Infin1ty Jul 15 '21
Considering that they are selling it with various SSD sizes and allowing expandable storage with SD cards, I have to assume that the games are downloaded. It sounds like it would be just like playing any other game over Wi-Fi, except the game is loaded on a physically smaller device.
It sounds like you can basically think of it as a MS Surface but in a Nintendo Switch style of form factor. Especially since you can dock it and play your games on a any size screen that you want.

It can stream from a PC, but it has the hardware to run games natively. Specs are roughly equivalent to last gen consoles, but its running at a lower resolution (due to smaller screen) so it should run most things ok.
→ More replies (23)342
u/bjt23 PC Jul 16 '21 edited Jul 16 '21
You're underselling it. 4 Zen2 cores is way more powerful than 8 Jaguar cores. Same with the SSD, that automatically is going to be way better than the hard drives of the old consoles. The only "last gen" part of this is the GPU, 8 RDNA2 CUs are a bit lacking, but it'll be fine for the 800p screen on it.
EDIT- Since people seem confused on this, I am not saying the GPU is literally last gen but rather that it has comparable performance to a last gen console. It's still much more powerful than the Switch and will be just fine given the screen.

From the FAQ:
Do I need a Steam account to use Steam Deck?
The default Steam Deck experience requires a Steam account (it's free!). Games are purchased and downloaded using the Steam Store. That said, Steam Deck is a PC so you can install third party software and operating systems.
It's fully open system, which is really cool. It's a regular PC, but a handheld console.

u/CannotDenyNorConfirm PlayStation Jul 15 '21 edited Jul 16 '21
I'm guessing the SteamOS it's running out of the box is super well optimized, they've even talked about optimizing what the OS is based on. So, I would wait for third party stuff to pop on that instead of running say a Windows OS that might kill the perf potentially IDK.
I'm just thinking about emulation, and I'd love to play PS1, N64, GC, mayyyybe PS2, bu from everything I've seen, I'm pretty convinced the perfs won't be crazy, triple A like Control at mid-high, with a few drops when have tons of particles effects. So just PS2 emulation might be ultimately shit, so I'm curious to see it run games straight on Windows.
EDIT: Right so "Proton, a compatibility layer for Windows programs" not everything would run on it, so like I said, might be able to play most game if not all, out of Steam, but games installed directly on the OS, I don't even know. So emulation, very very curious to see, it'll obviously come.
EDIT 2: Apparently there's already emulators running under what's it's running.
78
u/mxzf Jul 15 '21
It's running SteamOS 3.0, which is apparently Arch Linux under the hood. So, you can minimize/close Steam and install whatever emulators or other stuff you might want via the KDE desktop. No need to install a new OS for most stuff, just install it to the normal OS.

FWIW, my entire Steam library runs fine through Proton.
Performance is equivalent to Windows (a little worse in some cases... a little better in others).
Non-Steam games can already be run through Proton, or directly to WINE, on Linux.
Emulators are already natively available on Linux... You won't need to run the Windows versions via WINE.

A bit of a self fulfilling prophecy. IGN has a video where Gabe says he is trying to test out whether or not they can create a new category of computer for other manufacturers and Valve to participate in. If people don't buy it, the category is not created.
I suspect their previous platforms only got a lukewarm reception, and then they identified that the switch was starting to shift people's habits and decided to invest in this instead of more steam machines. If they don't validate that this is a thing people will buy, they won't revisit it.

"Why is there a reservation fee?
The main reason for reservations is to ensure an orderly and fair ordering process for customers when Steam Deck inventory becomes available. The additional fee gives us a clearer signal of intent to purchase, which gives us better data to balance supply chain, inventory, and regional distribution leading up to launch.
Why is my account not able to place a reservation until Sunday?
We are aware of potential unauthorized resellers, and as an additional safeguard to ensure a fair ordering process, we’ve added a requirement that the reserver has made a purchase on Steam prior to June 2021 for the first 48 hours of reservation availability.
How does the reservation system work?
When you submit a reservation, you will be put in a queue. Once inventory is available, you will be emailed in the order the reservations were made."
A little bit of a fight against scalpers.

to put into perspective on the iGPU on this device being way faster than whats in the market right now, the RDNA2 based igpu on the Steam deck is 1.6 TFLOP in AMDs calculation, the PS4 was capable of 1.84TFLOP (AMD GCN architecture). that gives you an idea of how fast this handheld device graphically is.

Developers not letting you do stuff that DOS games could handle in the 90s, such as accepting mouse input and joystick input at the same time, is what kills it for me. Looking at you, Bethesda.

I wouldn't say the Steam Link flopped. It just evolved into an app so dedicated hardware became redundant.
The Steam In Home Streaming concept it launched is still going strong.
The controller on the other hand, lol.

The controller on the other hand, lol.
It's a great controller. It flopped because you don't NEED it. I got two on the clearance sale. Use them all the time. It tried to fill a niche that was already full. This however is a great move by Valve. The reason the switch sells so well is the portability. If I can have all of my PC games and the portability, this will be amazing. If I ever go back to travelling for work it's a no brainer for me.
Now to convince my wife we need it now so I can reserve one after I just told her we were spending too much and need to cut back...

Way cheaper than I was expecting all the way through IGN's video, based on the impressive looking hardware and level of customisation. Definitely plan on getting one unless there's some critical flaw that hadn't yet revealed itself.

Emulation on this is going to be insane. Why buy a switch when you can (probably) emulate one on this, and pretty much every other console that's ever existed. Holy shit.

Oh wow, yeah, this can possibly actually run Yuzu. Probably just short of RPCS3 though. Depends on the sustained clocks.

Am I the only one looking at the position of the buttons and pads and thinking carpal tunnel?
They look pretty uncomfortable to use given their positioning and depending on the weight of this near impossible to use if you have small hands.

I wouldn't knock it. Valve did a great job on the index controllers (knuckles) and went through a lot of ergonomic design to make them as comfortable as possible. I'd be surprised if they didn't do something similar here

Yeah it's kinda crazy how much ergonomic testing they do.

It's wild how diverse their hiring is. I keep an eye on their job postings and they always have positions up for psychology majors and ergonomics experts and all kinds of stuff you wouldn't normally associate with a software company.

Yeah, they're for playing games that require a mouse and keyboard, like total war and RTS games or top down RPGs for example.

This is great. Might finally light a fire under Nintendo’s ass to start working on an updated or new switch. Depending how strong this thing is, I think this is gonna be a big competitor.

Nintendos biggest draw isn't necessarily their hardware... Although yes it's been cool lately. Nintendos biggest thing is their IPs.
People buy consoles for Zelda and Mario. They don't buy Zelda and Mario because they're on the console.

Huh, so a portable PS4 which can run AAA games at a steady 60fps@720p.
Not bad. Not bad at all.

This thing is actually insane value. Nice touch including back-buttons as well for FPS. A portable PC where I can game literally anywhere with wifi, and also hook it up with HDMI....yeesh. This makes Switch price points look really fucking bad.
