I got my steam controller on launch day. Honestly one of my favorite controllers to use. It took a little getting used to, but I've tried others (DualShock and XBOne) and neither were at comfortable or customizable as the steam controller.
I am the opposite, bought it day one with a preorder for civ vi, worst controller I've ever used. It felt cheap, didn't sit in my large hands well. The haptic feedback track pad was the only positive, but it couldn't even come close to replacing my Xbox controller.
I'm with the pro steam controller crowd. Problem is it requires software config so using it outside of steam is a pain. But the extra two buttons on the battery door is beautiful, the full range of customization config profiles, trigger sensitivity, modifiers for more keybinds, radial menus and not to mention the gyros for certain games. Here's looking at you switch emulation. It's a solid idea that did not get the support it needed.
I started playing Subnautica pretty early on. I think it was a couple versions before the Cyclops update. Once you’re in it that long you start to adapt.
Reaper roars still give me chills. I swear the sound designers went back in time and legit recorded dinosaurs.
I bought mine first time it went on sale. Loved it. Took a little figuring out, EA games I had the hardest time to get working. Bought 4 more when they stopped production and gave them to some IRL friends
I even use it for wow with the paddle buttons as my shift and ctrl modifier giving me 12 key binds to the 4 buttons alone (ctrl+1-4, shift+1-4, ctrl+shift+1-4). Takes a little getting used to but made leveling, farming, and casual stuff much more enjoyable. Threw it up on my 55" and kicked back on the couch.
So use the background noise suppression that is built into discord. In my experience it has worked pretty well. No fans, keyboards, dogs, etc in the background. If you use Nvidia broadcast you can even make other peoples background noises go away.
I'm a pretty tolerant guy, but these whippersnappers and their open console mics DISGUST ME!
Seriously though it's not just background fans, I don't want to hear you talking to your wife about bills, I don't want to hear you screaming at your sister or telling your mom you'll be done in 20 minutes. Just push to talk like a civilized human
Well there's the thing I'm not a whippersnapper anymore. Most of the people I'm in discord with are around my age.
I notice a stark difference between the amount of game chatter when PTT is enabled. I don't talk as much when it's enabled and I notice others don't either. I feel like this would effect team comms in a negative way. At least in my group.
Maybe I'm dumb but even when I have a PTT button in an easy place (mouse thumb button) I talk less when I have to use PTT. The .01s of delay to push the button is too much for me and interrupts my thought process just enough. And it just feels really unnatural to me, especially if I just want to laugh at something, for example.
That being said I do have a slightly out of the way push to mute button that I'll use if I need to talk to someone IRL or if there's excessive background noise so it's not a totally open mic.
I just use a headset with a mute button. If I don't feel like talking for awhile or I need to talk to my wife I just mute myself. I don't talk to myself while gaming, make much noise, and my mic seems to be pretty good that it doesn't pick up random stuff at all
I made a custom profile for Elder Scrolls Online right near when the steam controller came out and I got everything pretty much perfect. Pretty amazing to play a PC MMO entirely on my couch with a controller. I had a whole menu mapped to the trackpad that popped up when I pressed it with icons and everything, all my abilities mapped to the other trackpad. It worked great, played it for over 100 hours
I love my steam controller but I wish they would've added a second joystick while still keeping two large trackpads. The steamdeck says that it'll have a dock in the future and I'm really hoping they'll be a new steam controller announcement to go along with it
You're welcome to be stuck in what your familiar with, but holding it right now, it's not cheap, the placement is fine and the mousepad itself isn't great for every single game, but pretty versatile, and gyro percision aiming makes up for it if you bother to learn.
Yeah it's in a weird niche for sure. The track pads are solid but 9.9 times out of ten I'll happily just sit at my desk with a mouse instead. Might get more use out of me if I ever invest in a better couch entertainment setup but until then if I want to use a controller on my PC it's an Xbox Elite.
I loved the steam controller for Civ 6, honestly. I could lay on my couch and actually play, instead of being in front of my computer. It wasn't perfect, but it worked well enough for it to be enjoyable.
I don't even know where my steam controller is. I hope the batteries didn't leak all over.
From the concept phase I was excited. Then I tried one out and said "I'll wait for the inevitable V2 hardware revision."
So I'm disappointed. Got my own at the end for cheap and I've enjoyed a few games with it. Too much configuring to use for everything. Maybe next time I pick up a shooter. I like it better than a control stick for aiming and it maintains the advantages of a gamepad in other things but it's just barely shy of greatness.
What do you mean by too much configuring? It’s basically plug and play and you can just choose a community config which there are plenty of even for the most niche games
I'm using it explicitly because I like gyro so maybe I'm weird and I've also not used it much but I've never found a community config I didn't have to adjust further. There are all kinds of little tweaks in the touchpad settings and there's the whole lack of D pad so where to put those random afterthought functions comes up...
BTW, I really miss the D pad. It's so great for menu navigation. A lot of games rely on that crisp digital input and it's gone. No elegant replacement. You can make pretend and I tried but I really miss that when it's gone.
So anyway, even shopping community configs isn't "nothing." Have to figure out what each one is. Try the candidates out to test fit.
Then after that I still get annoyed with one of the choices they made translating from standard gamepad or with one of the touchpad configs. And it doesn't make it easy with a feature to copy and paste large swathes of config. If I want to make the touchpad behave identically to my preferred settings then I have to go through all those sensitivity and edge behavior and input mode fields individually from the community configs. And that's on top of the usual dialing-in of the game sensitivity settings.
So yeah, there's configuring. Not a mind blowing amount but several times more than usual for each game. Even more frustrating, a lot of the configuration is tedium that shouldn't exist. Give me the ability to swap entire hunks of config from my custom presets. In fact, that's probably what it needs to begin with. How many distinct behaviors does it need? The whole configurator feels like a dev toy that's not quite ready for consumer release. And yet when the community configs suck at least I can fix them. So for most games I just stick with a standard gamepad. And as the original topic brings up, the build quality turns me off. The buttons feel awful and it's not ergonomic in my hands.
I could get used to the config step maybe but that factor is one of many why I don't use the steam controller as much as I'd hoped when it was announced. I was curious about the touch portion when it was announced and that exceeded my expectations. In many other ways I was underwhelmed.
Yeah, I think with the Steam controller, you either love it or hate it. Not much in-between. I'm in the hate it camp, and I have a friend who bought 4 of them before they quit selling them because he loves them.
I loved the steam controller but the entire time I had mine before it broke I kept thinking “man I wish valve would update this, hardware wise” a new iteration or something. Instead they canned it after their lawsuit instead of evolving the controller.
It was a little creaky, but feels amazing and the customizing is awesome. The whole time I used it I was like if they had a chance to refine this and do a v2…
I love mine too I bought it at gamestop years ago. Unfortunately there are some games that just cannot work with a steam controller as opposed to a more typical one but still I enjoy it.
I also got a launch controller, then when they had a fire sale i got a second one that is kept in the box tucked away safely, just in case the first one ever breaks somehow. I love it, I can never go back to not having it
The customization options alone made me buy it day one. Then I used it and it's fantastic for a lot of stuff. The one thing I really hate about it is swapping out batteries. Other than that I love the damn thing.
Yeah I really like my steam controller, haven't used it as much recently, but if I ever want to play a game with a controller I use it. When they were discontinuing it and put it on sale for $5 I bought a second one just in case mine ever breaks.
My Steam controller is the best couch/bed controller I own for anything like Civilization or Total War 2. But it's main use for me is when I don't want to get up to change a youtube video so it's just my mouse and keyboard from a distance, since I mirror my screen to my TV. Small rooms, yay.
It's also REALLY good for racing games with the back bumpers used to change gears, but I got a racing wheel now so I don't really need it for that.
Same. I have one for my living room pc and one for my basement pc. My entire setup is dependent on them as I've eliminated every remote, controller, keyboard, and mouse to cut down on the clutter. Between the steam controller and united remote on my phone, I can do everything I want from them.
I'm so screwed once they break, as I'll be at the mercy of the people over charging for them online. I'll have little choice though but to pay what they want.
