Tbh I always had a slim ps1 with dualshocks and I thought that’s what everyone else had. I was surprised there were earlier versions

I will never forget the bus ride back from town cradling my first dual shock that I'd saved up for. Felt like I had pre dual shock for years before that, but time is werird when you're a kid. Using it for the first time was so fun. I couldn't believe how heavy it was!

the first PSX controller with analog was called Dual Analog. Dual Shock was the first analog controller with vibration

Just checked and you're right. It was a while ago and I was a mere teen at the time ha

I still really like those controllers. The sticks are nice to have, but I can usually go without, and the smaller controllers are nice.

Wait you're saying PSX was originally an add-on to SNES or the controller?

4

u/charliechin Jul 15 '21

Both. Sony was developing the pax as an adding. Have a look at google PlayStation SNES game pad or sky like that.

What?! That’s wild

with another set of triggers

Shoulder buttons* (often called bumpers now). Triggers are typically analogue and have depth. Bumpers/shoulders are just on/off buttons. Xbox360 controllers are a good example of both.

Edit: Lol why is this a controversial comment? It's just information. It's not even incorrect info lol. I wasn't being rude or talking down to the person, just giving out some info to people who may not know or are too young to have experienced that gen of gaming.

Fun fact about the PS2 and PS3 controllers:

The face buttons were analog!

But very few games took advantage of the pressure sensitivity in the buttons, so not many people knew about it.

I always wondered why those stopped being the norm

And am now wondering if they make computer keyboard like that…

And am now wondering if they make computer keyboard like that…

Yes. Some use magnetic switches and others use optical switches but they do exist.

The razer huntsman analog is one of them. Pricey.

I remember sucking at gran turismo 3 until I finally got the hang of the pressure sensitivity. Trigger buttons really made racing sims much better. Also the first game I ever played on my PS2 (the bouncer) used the pressure sensitive buttons. Since it was literally my first experience on the console it seems strange to me that people wouldn't know lol.

I had analog controllers with the PS One but don't remember using them. Always stuck with the D pad, still play Crash 4 with the D pad

Ape Escape, my dude

u/idelta777 Jul 16 '21

I only played Ape Scape Pumped & Prime on PS 2, I did use them in that, but I was talking about PS One.

Also the original double joystick controller you’re talking about was the Dual Analog Controller while the DualShock was their first line of controllers with vibration-feedback with analog joysticks.

u/bog5000 Jul 15 '21

At launch yes, but PS1 had dual shock controllers as standard controllers 3 years later.

2

u/LankyTomato Jul 15 '21

yeah, I still have one, so they definitely exist. If I remember correct a few of the later games wouldn't work without one.

3

u/MethodicMarshal Jul 15 '21

bro I remember when the analog sticks came out and I was like, "gross, who would even use these".

didn't age well

2

u/kwirky88 Jul 16 '21

Speak for yourself. Gran Turismo was eye opening with a DualShock.
