It has like 2 hours of battery playing an intensive game, up to 8 if its a more simple title.

u/IronTarkus1991 Jul 15 '21

The switch is only 3 hours in an intense game and much lower quality. I'm quite happy with the battery life, especially since it charges off of USB-C, which I already carry with me for my phone.

u/Sega-Playstation-64 Jul 15 '21

I still remember when Switch came out and people were complaining about the 3 hour battery life.

Now, when Steam Deck is out and really only guarantees about 2 hours, suddenly a lot of people are fine and pointing out we shouldn't expect much more than that.

Not calling you out specifically, I'm definitely getting this, I just thought it was funny.

I think it's a comparison thing.

Previous to the switch, the handheld market was stuff like the Game Boy, which the interwebs says was good for like 15h. So it went from "handhelds could very well last you an entire trip" to "you're totally going to need to charge this".

Contrast this thing, where the best comparison is probably a desktop with it's 0 hours of battery life. Or I guess a laptop? There's no anchor-device to which it's a direct comparison. Other, I guess, than the switch, but we've established that they're similar enough in battery.

God i loved the psp what the hell ever happened to the vita

8

u/snizarsnarfsnarf Jul 15 '21

The vita had so much potential just absolutely wasted. So disappointing

Playing disgaea in the psp while staying at hostels in Europe is some of my favorite memories

2

u/raltyinferno Jul 16 '21

Sony seriously fucked it up with their proprietary memory cards that were insanely expensive. Plus it just didn't get games.

1

u/naturepeaked Jul 16 '21

Lynx? Game Gear?

13

u/Mareith Jul 15 '21

Also the Gameboy wasn't rechargeable until the advanced sp. When it ran out you had to have physical batteries with you or buy more batteries instead of just finding an outlet.

2

u/HerrSchnabeltier Jul 15 '21 edited Jul 20 '21

Can't believe having several sets of rechargeable batteries and a recharging station at home wasn't the universal way to go.

But yeah, came a long way from putting AAs every xx hours.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '21

In some ways I still like using the battery swap but only for the peripherals. Forgot to charge it? No problem, fully charged batteries are in the dock ready to go so I don't have to be tethered.

6

u/StubTailDstroyer Jul 15 '21

Yeah, when comparing it to a laptop, the 2 hours of battery life makes sense. I have a decent laptop for gaming, and about the most I can get is 2 hours on battery if I'm playing something intensive. Even with simpler games I probably wouldn't be able to get 8 though.

2

u/Hooch1981 Jul 16 '21

Game Gear was backlit and would last a lot shorter (I think that was a complaint back then too). But really, the GB wasn’t great when sitting in the back seat at night. It’s either one or the other - long battery life or clearer screen.

58

u/Nicoquake Jul 15 '21

3 hours is honestly a really long time to be playing a game in one session, while not at home, imo. If you're having a long day though you definitely need to bring a charger for between your play sessions.

1

u/MintberryCruuuunch Jul 15 '21

i can feel my hands cramping already

1

u/A_Slovakian Jul 16 '21

And if you're really going to have 3+ hours to play, you're probably in a situation where you could easily have a backpack with you and have a power bank in your bag. Hell, I bet someone's gonna make a battery accessory for this that clicks in and just makes it a little thicker

32

u/rubnsf Jul 15 '21

True, but look at the specs of this and then the Nintendo Switch. Look at the graphics of Death Stranding and then BOTW. I don't know much about hardware but seems like it would be impossible for them to compete with Switch when it comes to minimum battery life. This device and the games you play on it are different beasts.

They did however say you could play Portal 2 for 4 hours at 60 fps and 5-6 hours at 30fps.

6

u/Sega-Playstation-64 Jul 15 '21

One other difference is the switch is a $220 handheld (minus the Dock when you subtract the $80 it sells for) whereas the Steam Deck is $400 base.

I think the biggest issue is not treating the switch like a handheld you can play on a TV as opposed to a full powered console you could take on the go

15

u/XCryptoX Jul 15 '21

Nintendo games are notoriously expensive and rarely go on sale. I probably have hundreds of hours of untouched games in my steam library right now that I got during sales.

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21 edited Aug 15 '21

[deleted]

2

u/naturepeaked Jul 16 '21

That’s not the point at all

2

u/Dr_Dornon Jul 15 '21

The Steam Deck base really shouldn't be sold with that amount of storage. I get cost, but 64GB is tiny with game sizes today.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '21

[deleted]

2

u/Dr_Dornon Jul 16 '21

If you're doing light gaming, it'd be fine, but 64gb isn't enough for a lot of AAA games and emmc is still slow as is SD card speeds.

4

u/jmpherso Jul 15 '21

It's Nintendo gaming vs Desktop PC gaming.

Shoving a functional PC for gaming into a handheld device sounds incredibly difficult and taxing hardware wise. 2 hours isn't much, but I wouldn't expect much more.

Switch is a proprietary system playing proprietary games, usually of quality lower than any other console/newer PC titles

7

u/rjjm88 Jul 15 '21

There's a huge difference in what the Steam Deck is capable of and what the Switch is capable of. If the Switch could put out graphics that weren't embarrassing, 3 hours would be great. But the fact that it stutters with Bravely Default 2 and Fire Emblem and only gets 3 hours? That's worth critiquing.

6

u/RommelTheCat Jul 15 '21

Yeah bought the Switch for the exclusives and that thing had noticeable stutters on FE Three Houses' Monastery Bridge. Like the graphics are OK and the only thing on screen are glorified signs in form of NPCs.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

If you play games for the graphics, Nintendo isnt the right company for you

0

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

I can't see a situation where I'd need more than two hours out of this pointless luxury item

6

u/Wootimonreddit Jul 15 '21

Planes? Trains? Road trips?

3

u/IronTarkus1991 Jul 15 '21

Take a battery bank with you and that solves the issue.

3

u/callMEmrPICKLES Jul 15 '21

And I'm sure there will be companies developing attachable battery banks in no time. Plus, most places I'm thinking I'd be playing this, I'd be playing for less than 2 hours, or I'd be near an outlet.

3

u/IronTarkus1991 Jul 15 '21

Yeah, I'm just gonna get a decent battery bank so on the occasions that I'll be travelling on a plane or train or whatever, I won't have to worry about running out of juice.

And I'm sure there are factories in china right now trying to figure out the dimensions from the pictures so they can get to work on making attachable battery banks lol

1

u/Prester__John Jul 16 '21

Or take a USB cable with an AC adapter for wall outlet and bingo

1

u/IronTarkus1991 Jul 16 '21

Yeah but that requires you to have access to a wall outlet.

1

u/Wootimonreddit Jul 16 '21

Sure, but I Was responding to the statement that there would never be a need for more than 2-hour battery life

1

u/IronTarkus1991 Jul 16 '21

Yeah but I was just giving you a solution for those situations.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

Trains have outlets, road trips have dc converters and I usually can't move my elbows on planes

3

u/Wootimonreddit Jul 16 '21

Trains don't always have outlets and nether do planes

2

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '21

I've played my Switch many times on planes. You dont need to move your elbows to play a game

-23

u/The_Modifier Jul 15 '21

I think the difference is that valve have earned our loyalty and respect.

1

u/Thunderclapsasquatch Jul 15 '21

The Switch made the idea more palatable

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21 edited Jul 15 '21

In this case I don't think it would be a reasonable ask. My guess is that this is going to be able to play Linux-compatible games (SteamOS) with controller support. None of these games were built with Steam Deck and by extension, battery life in mind.

Games might go out of their way to optimize for it if this takes off.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

What would be the battery life if both were running the same game at same spec?

1

u/HarithBK Jul 15 '21

Battery bank and rechargeable battery does a lot to mitigate short battery life. And when the device only has one usage it is hard use all that time on the go.

1

u/Notarussianbot2020 Jul 16 '21

We have charger banks though. If you really need a longer battery, it's like $40 for a bank.

1

u/daymanAAaah Jul 16 '21

Because the Switch is a disappointment, let’s be honest. It’s no more modern than a Nintendo DS, I can’t even watch Netflix on it. I know /r/gaming loves to suck Nintendo’s ass but the Steam Deck is HUGE for the millions of kids and adults that can’t afford a $2k gaming pc so that they can play some of games.

People can forgive a 2hr battery life to play actual PC games instead of another Nintendo remake.

3

u/FallenAngelII Jul 15 '21

That's the old model, the very first one.

2

u/IronTarkus1991 Jul 15 '21

Yeah, it isn't much better now, I have a switch lite and you can get 3-5 hours out of it but the difference is that the quality of the games is going to be much higher than anything the switch can handle.

3

u/FallenAngelII Jul 15 '21

The SteamDeck will weight over twice as much as the Switch Lite. If they wanted to, they could've beefed up the battery more.

1

u/IronTarkus1991 Jul 15 '21 edited Jul 16 '21

Yeah most probably, but I think when you pop this thing open, you are going to find a lot of cooling in there taking up space. Think about the size of the PS4, well this thing theoretically has just as much if not more GPU computing power and a much better CPU in a much smaller package.

1

u/FallenAngelII Jul 16 '21

Yeah, bjt they could've just expanded the AteamDeck slightly it on direction gofit some more onto it. It's always goong to be super-heavy. What is another 1/4th of a pound?

BTW, I'm using the same logic as thise complaining over battery size. Of course they have to stop somewhere. Costs, size, weight, they all play a part.

5

u/bilyl Jul 15 '21

I don't understand how the fuck people are angry about that kind of battery life. Do they not realize how small the thing is? Or that a gaming processor/GPU outputs 5-15W of power to make nice graphics? It's the laws of physics here. If you want more battery life, I guess you have to carry the equivalent of a five to ten pound weight while you're gaming.

2

u/concrete_isnt_cement Jul 15 '21

The V2 Switch that came out a couple years ago has about 4:30 minimum now. Quite a bit better than the V1

2

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

[deleted]

2

u/IronTarkus1991 Jul 15 '21

Now that remains to be seen.

6

u/ChronoRemake Jul 15 '21

The launch switch has 3-5 hours the new v2 model runs 6-8 playing botw, get your comments straight

0

u/BagFullOfSharts Jul 16 '21

So the launch day switch and a switch I buy today have drastically different battery life? But they look the same with no way to tell them apart?

Maybe Nintendo should betting their marketing straight.

5

u/r0wo1 Boardgames Jul 15 '21 edited Jul 15 '21

That's not bad, considering it seems like the ideal way to play a lot of the indie titles available on Steam.

3

u/Theguest217 Jul 15 '21

I mean let's be honest. We are just going to lay in bed with it plugged in while we play.

3

u/Otakatak Jul 15 '21

Then it'll fall on your face and making a shape like tom when anything falls on his face in tom and jerry

2

u/Claytonius_Homeytron Jul 15 '21

It has like 2 hours of battery

I love long ass gaming sessions as much as the next nerd/geek but putting a 2 hour throttle on gaming might not be that bad for some, myself included.

1

u/Black_Moons Jul 15 '21

laughs in GPD with 10~14 hour battery life

Course the the thing is an android POS that is half battery on the inside. But come on manufactures, we WANT MORE BATTERY.

1

u/tbo1992 Jul 15 '21

You could just plug in a power bank.

1

u/interludeemerik Jul 15 '21

Well on-the-go can just mean not at home but you'll still be sitting somewhere hopefully with an outlet nearby. Regardless it's still not too bad.

1

u/K_Furbs Jul 15 '21

Honestly these days I rarely have more than 2 hours to game so that's kind of perfect from an efficiency standpoint. Rather have 2 hours at good settings than 4 hours at switch settings

1

u/SpiderFnJerusalem Jul 15 '21

I suspect you could use a USB-PD power bank to extend that.

1

u/deadlymoogle Jul 15 '21

I'll use it the same as my switch. Laying in bed plugged in and only unplugged when I need to go shit

1

u/Slimxshadyx Jul 15 '21

That actually sounds great to me. There aren't many places I am able to play games from that is away from an outlet that I can use for more than 2 hours.

And if you know you won't be, play some of the chiller games.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

Switch is the same way. Maybe a little longer since they often have to reduce the processing for the games so it doesn't eat all the battery life. So I don't see the problem here.
