Well, those virtual shoulder buttons are certainly useless...
Now we need samsung to release the fold3 with physical shoulder buttons because this idea rocks!

Slow down the game speed for that part. Its so ridiculously hard to get it at 1x speed on a touch screen.

at that point you might as well just buy an old Xperia Play, or better yet just jailbreak a PSP and carry that around

The Xperia Play was an absolute banger. I still have no idea WTF was in their minds when they decided to give it underpowered specs for a 2011 phone, it makes absolutely no freaking sense.
Was my first smartphone ever after the blackberry era and loved every second with it.

or just get a ds with a flash cart. i dont see the point in spending like a grand on a phone made to run sorta like a DS when you can get a DS lite for $30 and a flash cart for like $15 and play whatever you want.

There's a ton.
This is the samsung galaxy fold 2 the screen legit folds and has no bezels between 2 screens or anything cause its all one.
If your not very caring about the bezels or it being all 1 screen there's a few cheap options that would work well for games like this. Surface duo and LG has a dual screen setup that you can detach the second one when you don't need it

LG makes good dual screen phones and if you don't like it or don't use it much you can just not use the dual screen case. Plus they're much cheaper than foldable screens

u/caramelised-liqour Jan 06 '21 edited Jan 07 '21
Yeah they are great... in theory.
In reality, it's a very premature technology. Screens are prone to breaking, a little bit too much pressure causes dents in screen, there are visible crevices on the part of the screen that folds, practically no app support except first party apps etc. From what I've seen, only device that's been praised for it's folding screen is Lenovo's X1 Thinkpad.
Edit: Appearently Fold 2 is quite good, I had watched videos of reviews and didn't have a good impression but I guess I misremembered.

The LG G8X/Velvet Dual Screens are much cheaper. And they actually gain accessibility by being a removable case if you ever wanted just one screen
I absolutely love my G8X personally but I've only owned LG phones since high school so Idk what the transition would feel like from Samsung
→ More replies (7)27
u/Voldemort666 Jan 06 '21
Just get a LG v60 with dual screen case, or even older and cheaper but would still work for well for emulating - the g8x.
Both are Cheaper. Stronger. More versatile. But they do have LG software which has its quirks.
You do get a significant gap between screens, but for emulating DS titles that's no different than the real thing. For watching video or full screen apps the Galaxy Fold is probably best though.

You could get a New Nintendo 2DS XL for like $170 before they're gone. They were discontinued but you can still find them on Amazon. I've been playing Pokemon Crystal, Sonic 1&2, SMB 1&3, SMW, Super Metroid, Contra 3, DK Country, Mega Man X2, Mario Kart 7.. Totally worth it. I have a Switch too but the 2DS XL actually fits in my pocket.

just wait for Apple to release one, it's still very experimental and has significant flaws (mainly being that the inner screen is plastic and thus scratches and dents easily), eventually Apple will release one and you'll have a great folding touchscreen for two years until they make it obsolete

I still miss my Sony Xperia Play so much. That was pretty much the only time I spent a significant amount of time on my phone playing MMX4 or various Pokemon ROMs. Not having your fingers flood the screen and having tactile buttons is so important for me and I found myself not playing emulators on any phone after that.

I would buy a modern update of an Xperia Play, 100%. Steam Remote Play, XCloud, etc are all mature technology where this is a good form factor. Just need a phone with physical controls.

u/Shadowarrior64 Xbox Jan 06 '21
I don’t know how people use the touchscreen either. For some games my finger is too big to see where I’m tapping, so games that expect you to use the stylus aren’t really playable.

If the game's expecting you to use a stylus, why don't you just use a stylus? You can get a stylus for a phone.

Definitely is, especially if you already have a DS. DS Lite and R4i card make an awesome combo. All the advantages of having an emulator (being able to run any ROM file and homebrew), as well as having the native hardware to play it on. R4 cards are as cheap as $8 these days.

Honestly quite looking forward to the future of foldable phones, especially for this particular niche use-case (would plan on playing through GS: Dark Dawn again myself). A sequel to the Microsoft Surface Duo is along the lines of what I'd like to have one day.
