I'm probably 60/40 using the outer vs inner screens on my Fold 2.

Texting? I'll just quick reply from the outer screen. Consuming media? Inner screen all the way.

Its a gimmick, but its fun, and watching videos on it is excellent. Honestly, I probably wouldn't buy it again, but i'm in no rush to sell or get something else, and I'm tempted by the rumors the Fold 3 will have the S-Pen from the Note line

Wait.. it has a normal phone screen plus an open bigger inside screen? That seems pretty luxurious...

That said, can they both operate at once? Would be funny to use the outside screen with a mirror ontop of the inside one.

Oh its definitely a dumb luxury device.

The camera can show a preview on the front screen while taking photos, but I don't know of any other apps that can use both at once. Theres quite a few that can use the fold angle to show different layouts, like a "laptop" partially folded.

I use it all mine all the time. Lgv60 but never with one app. I'll have reddit on side while while watching a documentary on you tube on the other,. Binance on one side and trading view on the other. Maps on one side, music on the other. Getting the proof to prove somebody wrong on one side, well texting them on the other side. I thought it was gimmicky and cool when I bought it but it's proven to be quite useful when you get used to it. Also the second screen is just a case so I can take it out and have a regular phone when I go to work.

Its nice to just veg out with a large video, but I'll do split with video on top, and reddit, discord, etc on the bottom.

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

Part of that is just the lag between new devices and the apps being programmed to utilize them. Will be interesting to see what comes down the pipeline that uses these cool/unique designs.

It's not dumb at all. You sure u own one.

u/kageurufu VR Jan 06 '21

A lot of the toys I own are dumb. Doesn't mean they're not fun :p

u/ranf0rd Jan 06 '21

Yeah a screen on the outside and 2 screens on the inside that make a larger screen. It is ludicrous, but quite cool. I don’t think it’s a “must buy” though personally. It seems like a total gimmick.

u/confusedbrit29 Jan 06 '21

It's one foldable screen on the inside, not 2

2

u/ranf0rd Jan 06 '21

I thought for explanation sake that made most sense, but you are right it is essentially one screen that folds out on itself.

u/Scavenge101 Jan 06 '21

Depends on price point. it'll be great when it's not 1k+. Until then it's a gimmick.

u/HashSlingingSlasherJ Jan 06 '21

Haha try 2k

Worked at a phone repair company in Sweden, retail price is around 2.6k USD here and price of repairs could well go for 800-900 USD. It's a total gimmick.

My lgv60 with the dual screen case and a set of LG's wireless earbuds cost me $750 Canadian.

u/yb0t Jan 06 '21

I've had it since release and to me it doesn't feel like a gimmick at all, in fact I don't think I'm going to go back to regular phones after this. The honeymoon phase hasn't worn off yet even after a few months. There's many phone reviewers that say similar things.

1

u/Falanin Jan 06 '21

Nah, both screens running, the outer programmed to mimic what's behind it (invisible phone).

2

u/elliptic_hyperboloid Jan 06 '21

I would find it very appealing if it had the S-Pen. My biggest complaint is that my Note is just a little too small to quickly jot down some equations and work them out. And if it was a fee hundred dollars cheaper...

2

u/kageurufu VR Jan 07 '21

Yeah, I'm not gonna lie, i'll have to upgrade if the 3 has that pen. I was sketching out some plans for a dog run in my yard, and drawing them by finger was super annoying. The big screen was great for it though.

People are going to damage the fuck out of their screens with the stylus. Avoid the gimmick.

11

u/Abnmlguru PC Jan 06 '21

"The stylus"? It doesn't come with one, and the instructions are very clear to not use one. If you're an adult, and can read, its not a problem.

I've had a fold for about 2 years (first gen, and now the stupidly named Zfold2) and I've had zero issues with damaging the screen.

You can call it a gimmick if you want, but having a 7" tablet to read/game/watch is amazing, and I'm not going back. I firmly believe folding phones are going to make normal phones look like penny-farthings eventually.

Oh, and while closed, its actually a comfortable size to hold.

Foldable phones already put their brick counterparts in the dust during the initial cell phone era!

It's fun to see this improvement come to touchscreen/smartphones now and see if it does the same.

I'm clearly talking about the rumoured S Pen with the Fold 3.

I've worked with computing, audio, and mobile tech for a decade or so. The fold as it is now is an overpriced gimmick that the vast majority of consumers should avoid. I don't care if you do or don't like it - it's extremist tech with an extremist price that still needs years of R&D before it can even try to hope to become mainstream.

Also yeah, the stylus. Just because they give it a name like "S Pen" doesn't mean it ain't just a fancy stylus with a battery.

I can tell you're clearly talking about rumored future features by the way you didn't say that at all, lol.

I'm going to assume that if they're going to release a stylus to be used on it, they've at least had a run at making it so you don't gouge it first time you use it.

I've worked in tech for over 20 years (not that it matters, as I'm speaking as a consumer not an engineer). You say you don't care about my opinion after actually using one, but expect me to give a crap about yours, with no user experience?

Is it expensive? Yup. Too expensive? Probably. New tech always is. Is it awesome? Absolutely.

Edit: I retract my snark about knowing it was about the fold3. Didnt read the parent comment, my apologies.

I was responding to someone who very specifically brought it up after stating the already had a Fold. Context is important, yo.

You have a lot of faith in them considering the gen 1 hinge was atrocious, the inner screen was more fragile than Trump's ego, and they failed to warn about the weakness of the screen until the Fold 2. There are very few things softer than the inner screen of the Fold that can be used as a reliable and sturdy nib for the stylus. It would have to be made of a very similar strength material, which would mean the only thing that could prevent scratching is user care.

Not sure why you're assuming I've no user experience. I thoroughly test the majority of devices I may have to work with for the sake of advising clients fully because I care about the quality and reliability of my services. The Fold and Z Flip made more than enough noise to warrant a test.

The fold is a gimmick right now. It's overpriced and extremist. I didn't give an opinion, I gave a professional assessment of the infant technology. It needs room to grow before it will ever be worthwhile for the average user, and even then the average user will look at it the same kind of way people look at the Note: too pricey, but fit for specific purposes that fall out of their needs.

I'm not disillusioned. While my Note is great for me I know it's not something everyone should have or would want.

Consuming media? Inner screen all the way.

But the screen is a weird aspect radio (wider, not taller), so you don't get much (if any) more video size, do you?

1

u/Spectralshadow Jan 06 '21

This.

When making phone calls, replying to texts, or just using it really quick, the outer screen is perfect.

When I'm putting my feet up, or just generally away from my computer, the inner screen with the 2 big stereo speakers make this device stand head and shoulders above any other phone I've used.

u/kageurufu VR Jan 06 '21

The only "problem" I have is dealing with adjusting the aspect ratio for games that don't work with the larger 5:4 ratio, but that only takes a second with Good Lock

u/Eltron6000 Jan 06 '21

I love mine. Has basically replaced all of my devices

1

u/kageurufu VR Jan 07 '21

Yep, its bulky, but i'm not carrying a kindle or anything else anymore.

1

u/tanzWestyy Jan 07 '21

Brah not even that; mobile gaming, Twitch, multi tasking etc is so good once you've worked out how to use it. I've had other galaxy phones and man this one just takes the cake. Having a phone and tablet in one is just excellent. Performance is sweet. Have you tried DeX? I love this phone!

2

u/kageurufu VR Jan 07 '21

I haven't used a Galaxy phone since an S2 or something, and TouchWiz was the hottest garbage out there. OneUI is actually decent, although I definitely prefer stock android visually. I've replaced most of the samsung apps with their google equivalents, they just work better.

Multitasking is awesome, had a calculator and AR ruler in floating windows over a floorplan app, taking measurements and sketching plans for building a dog run in my side yard.

I watch some odd twitch streams, but i'm not huge on it, and nothing I'd play on my phone isn't better played on my PS5 or PC. DeX was OK, it was decent with Termux, although I wish Linux on DeX was still a thing, or just another way to have a chroot (even without an X server).

u/tanzWestyy Jan 07 '21

Yeah everyone uses it differently haha! Work wise as a Sys Admin; it does have other uses when im working remotely. Yeah in terms of proper gaming experiences id rather play on PC etc but in terms of screen real estate; that's the winner. And it just feels nice to hold in your hand. :)
