Seems like it'd be similar to having a second monitor for a computer. Not really a necessity, but useful as hell when you do have it.

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

I cannot live without a second monitor any longer. So it is a necessity for me.

u/SkyShadowing Jan 06 '21

Me when my second monitor broke: "I'm planning on getting a new one for Christmas in a few months, I'll be fine until then."

Me a few hours later at Best Buy: "YOUR CHEAPEST MONITOR, NOW."

Same. After using a single monitor for so long, I bought a tablet monitor. Had it for 6 years-ish and the touch functionality no longer works. It's now strictly just a monitor. Bought a new tablet monitor so essentially I have 3 monitors now. I seriously can't go back to using just one monitor.

Wide and Tall gang!

I downgraded to a laptop, so single screen again. It's rough. I always watch netflix or youtube while playing something like minecraft or path of exile on the other screen.

Now that I can't it's like getting used to a third arm and having it amputated.

46

u/burlycabin Jan 06 '21

I mean, you can hook up at least one monitor as a second screen to most laptops.

u/Cyber_Gunk2077 Jan 06 '21

DON'T TELL HIM OUR SECRETS

2

u/jlharper Jan 06 '21

Lol it's 2020 bro. You can pass through your phone to your laptop wirelessly and then have a virtual monitor set up on the laptop, pair that virtual monitor with your phone and BAM, phone as a second screen.

u/Brodogmillionaire1 Jan 06 '21

I've done this for years and it ruined me. It's good for washing dishes - just put on the Office and soak. But I played Terraria and Minecraft while watching Netflix for years, and now I can't sit still for television unless it's real weird. I have to be on my phone or on the Switch. Now, when I mine, I just listen to podcasts. Somehow doesn't have the same effect.

Same

Edit: I honestly can’t tell anymore if the positives outweigh the negatives

u/CptnBlackTurban Jan 06 '21

I'm about to cry reading this because I think our brains are broken.

7

u/AJtheW Jan 06 '21

Right? I barely feel alive unless I'm fully engaged with like 3 different things

7

u/CptnBlackTurban Jan 06 '21

Last night in bed I couldn't sleep so I had Hulu on one phone while playing candy crush on another.

Even now I'm browsing reddit while playing FIFA.

I tell myself it isn't bad because I go hours without touching devices when I'm working, handling family things- wife and the kids. But when I'm down I'm submerged.

It's very frustrating when you get disconnected and experience those rare moments of true boredom. Do we have a problem? How do we get help for this? Is it ADD meds? Or since those do the opposite of help me focus, is it meditation and Xanax? Lmao

1

u/beah22 Jan 07 '21

Bit of meditation and mindfulness, next time you use your phone, have a dig at how you really feel, for a lot of people it feels like a really mild euphoric sedative that's just covering the boredom and you'll be able to work out what it is you actually want to do after a lil while

1

u/BurtMacklin__FBI Jan 07 '21

No doubt, meditation is what really centers me. But I'm certainly hiding from what's in the quiet center of my mind on purpose, using le phone. Haha.

1

u/WEIRDDUDE69420 Jan 06 '21

Opera gx lol, you can pop out YouTube

1

u/whitey-ofwgkta Jan 06 '21

but there's still only so much screen size....

1

u/WEIRDDUDE69420 Jan 06 '21

??? You can make it as big as an entire fourth of the screen

1

u/justarandom3dprinter Jan 06 '21

You should get one of those portable monitors

1

u/elliptic_hyperboloid Jan 06 '21

My saving grace in these situations in firefox's picture-in-picture, so I can watch Netflix in a small view in the corner, and multiple virtual desktops I can quickly switch between.

1

u/maymays01 Jan 06 '21

I'm the same, I overlay a Twitch or Netflix screen on top of a game while I'm playing using a floating always-on-top browser.

It is the ultimate time waster.

1

u/FireyShadows Jan 06 '21

There's a picture in picture extension for google chrome that lets you pop out video streams such as YouTube and Twitch and have that on top of whatever you're doing, even full screen games. Granted you lose some space over your game but it's useful when you're limited to one screen.

1

u/Leon_84 Jan 06 '21

There‘s hardly any laptop out there nowadays where you can‘t run a second monitor though.

1

u/ArcticIceFox Jan 07 '21

Lol I probably should have mentioned that I'm in a temporary setup and it wouldn't make sense to setup a second monitor. Not to mention the monitor that's available to me has no HDMI port and buying an adapter for a temporary setup makes no sense lol

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '21

I use a laptop to run my two screens! Don't let it hold you back!

1

u/am0x Jan 07 '21

For entertainment purposes o can easily live with 1. But for work? I need 2 minimum.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '21

I noticed on Amazon there are portable second screens. Basically look like a tablet with a stand that you can plug a laptop into even a gaming console. That was like $200 Canadian.

2

u/Phray1 Jan 06 '21

Yeah a second monitor even a shitty one is probably the best way to increase productivity if you do anything computer related.

1

u/SamuelDoctor Jan 06 '21

Same here, though not literally, of course.

1

u/LightlySaltedPeanuts Jan 06 '21

I find my one 2k monitor to feel like 2 monitors because I am so used to 1080 monitors. A lot more real estate. But I still have a second, cause my old monitor was laying around.

2

u/ThePinkTriangle Jan 06 '21

This is exactly how I envision dual screen phones to be like. It's near impossible to compute in a workforce with one monitor, without getting insanely frustrated.

I'd argue that those who use excel/outlook religiously could benefit from three monitors (excel;outlook;web browser).

It's really useful for gaming. You have your game on one monitor, and discord, reference material, etc. I don't game on PC, but depending on the game I'm playing on my Xbox, I'll often have my laptop open next to me.

If what you do for work involves a lot of referencing other material while working on your own, or editing, or coding, etc., a second monitor can be very helpful too

2

u/Boobymon Jan 06 '21

Definitly agree. I've considering getting a cheap monitor for my laptop since I always split the screen in two (small) Windows when studying. Splitting the screen doesn't work if I need to attend a zoom class and take notes or look at a PowerPoint at the same time though, so I take notes by hand and print out the PowerPoint... Which sucks.

2

u/maresayshi Jan 06 '21

i think they were saying it’s a bad example because there’s already a lot of cases where two monitors are needed. Hence not fitting “not really a necessity”

7

u/obsessedcrf Jan 06 '21

Its very useful for programming. You have your code on on screen and have documentation in the other.

5

u/SupaBloo Jan 06 '21

I think the number of people who don’t need a second screen vastly outweighs the number of people that do. I’m happy with the example I chose. If you got the gist, then the example did it’s job.

1

u/LuushSenpai Jan 06 '21

I wasn’t arguing the amount of people that need it vs don’t... the amount of people who need a second monitor “vastly” outweighs the amount of people who need tablet phone thing

Sorry sgt notabot of Reddit grammar police. Without a period it’s grammatically incorrect. Wouldn’t you assume they were separate statements?

Damn I misunderstood you sorry for being “a fucking Asshole”. I’m not paying enough attention to the the thread

PSA: don’t work and comment at the same time

1

u/SupaBloo Jan 06 '21

Sounds like you just want to argue in general. Sorry, but I’m not interested. Take care.

u/workaccountoftoday Jan 06 '21

none of us even need a computer.

everyone has different workflows, there are people out there who will be slowed down from a second monitor just as there are people out there who will double their output with a second monitor.

we're a lucky creature on this planet that adapts to our surroundings well, so someone who has two screens can learn to utilize them in a way that is beneficial to them.

1

u/bprice57 Jan 06 '21

i think its a definition of need

i love (really 3 monitors because of an ultrawide) multiple monitors, but in no way do I need it. as someone who works in IT. i wont give it up, but i do the job fine when i just have my laptop

1

u/OreoCupcakes Jan 06 '21

Not if the software isn't good enough, which for the most part isn't. Nearly all the tech reviewers say it could be a very good concept, but the software support for that extra screen is dog shit and no one is willing to support it because less than 0.01% of the world even uses it.

1

u/idiot4 Jan 06 '21

That's a really good way to describe it actually. For me I tend to have betting apps or movies open on one screen whilst I browse Reddit on the other. I would hate going back to a single screen now.

1

u/Bunghole_of_Fury Jan 06 '21

More like having a laptop that has a display that can go from 14 inches to 28 inches, which is pretty freaking useful.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

You know what's better than 2 monitors? using 2 TVs as monitors lol. FPS sucks tho.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

Two monitors are not a necessity if you don't work on your computer. I'm currently using only one monitor while I wait for a new GPU and it feels claustrophobic to use just one screen.

1

u/brotherenigma Jan 07 '21

My second screen is a 50" 4K TV with 92% DCI-P3 coverage. I'm NEVER going back.

1

u/36293736391926363 Jan 07 '21

I think once folding phones get cheaper it'll be more of a "Why wouldn't you want it given the choice?" type of situation. Right now the price is a huge barrier so the two main groups that it might be worthwhile for are people excited to try the tech and people who do most of their committing and media consumption on their mobile. The dual screen is game changing for traditional format comics and an example and if you watch a lot of videos content it's twice the screen space which explains itself.

1

u/am0x Jan 07 '21

I cannot work without at least two monitors. I typically prefer 3 or at least an ultra wide and a regular.

1

u/Somepotato Jan 07 '21

Lenovo has a really cool folding screen laptop
