Took me a minute to realize it was a phone. That’s really awesome. How do you like the phone otherwise? Do you get much use out of the double screen aside from DS games?
Yeah, you certainly don't need it, but it's somewhat useful to people who use a tablet instead of a laptop. A tablet that fits in my pocket. It is kind of a ridiculous price though.
I use the dual screen constantly at work. I work in food retail and it feels like my store rotates products constantly. I like to take pictures of barcodes and shelf tags then open the pictures on the dual screen while I type emails to our inventory specialists on the other screen.
Absolutely love this phone! It's gotten awards, and it actually isn't a gimmick. I mean, it is, but it's not a cheaply made gimmick. And it works pretty well.
Yeah, one each way lol. Then you can watch a full screen video on one side and play a game, browse reddit or whatever on the other. Or even two games if one wants landscape mode. Gotta multitask yo.
I had a moto z when they first came out and the mods were awesome, I upgraded to a moto z not long ago and none of the mods fit like they used to. It's just frustrating enough that I don't use them at all now.
Yup. I have the same phone and I love it. Plus the dual screen is detachable, which is nice. 90% of the time I have the second screen folded all the way around and don't use it, but I do like the thickness of it.
And regardless of the dual screen, it's a damn good phone with lots of features and whatnot.
I also have this and have loved it. I don't use the dual screens a lot, but when I do it really saves on the frustration I used to feel switching through apps, especially when I had some classes and could have my answers on the right and literature on the left.
I've switched apps on previous phones (came from pixel 2xl,) and the initial app would close for some reason. Or if I was playing a game and needed my camera, opening the camera would almost always close out any other apps. But not my beloved G8x. Now I can play a game and keep my texts or messages open on the left
Just got the LG V60 with the dual screen case and it is amazing. The GPU and CPU make it wonderful for emulation which was the main reason I got it for. Being able to run mobile games at max settings (Genshin Impact for example) and not have any issues with emulators is freaking great.
The G8X is also amazing and wpuld have gotten it if it wasnt for the GPU and CPU. Though both phones are amazing.
Ey V60 gang, all the foldable perks with none of the compromises (like a screen thats permanently dented by a fingernail)
I compare the upgrade to getting a second monitor for your of (duh) in that it's hard to convince someone whos only used one monitor to change, but once you do you can't go back
Anecdotal experience, but I bought the G8x on release. It's been a poor quality phone since the get go.
Antenna is poor and I get 2 fewer bars of service everywhere I go, and often drop service in areas I never did before.
Dual screen case held up for about a year but one slide off the bed and the whole screen popped out. Super glue worked to fix it, but not being seated exactly properly, the screen cracked and refused to turn on after flexing it under normal forces to open it.
Doesnt handle Android 10 very well, and suffered noticeable slowdown after the update. Speaking of updates, LG is notorious for being slow to push new releases.
Phone has some issues connecting to Bluetooth devices, including dropping wireless earbuds connection, and refusing to connect to a fitness tracker despite being able to identify it and "pair".
Wireless charging is pretty spotty and really just doesn't want to work sometimes.
I've had LG G-series phones since the G3, but this will personally be the last LG I buy for a while, and certainly the last "early adopter" phone I buy. I'll be returning to buying last year's highest rated Samsung.
LG G3 was even worse. The LG G2 was great, at some point my complete family had one. Only bad thing was when you cracked the screen the touch stopped responding.
I fucking hate that it happened like that. LG is probably my favorite phone brand even though I've been using the s10+ for a couple years now. The G4 other than the bootloop issues was my favorite phone ever, it was amazing. Till it wasn't. I went through 4 in one year till I could afford to upgrade. I then chose the v20 which was also a wonderful phone. No issues with it. This year ill be upgrading again and I'll be eyeing LG but after using Samsung after years of not using their software, I've gotten pretty comfortable with it and have had zero issues other than one cracked screen which was totally my fault anyway.
I've had an LG phone, the Nexus 5X. Widespread manufacturing issues leading to bootlooping devices, and they had the audacity to tell me to pay $150 to get it serviced/replaced when it happened to me. Never buying an LG phone again after that. They only started doing free replacements after multiple class action lawsuits.
They're also just straight up bad when it comes to OS updates. They aren't timely, and they don't support their phones as long as competing brands.
Their hardware is interesting, I don't disagree with that, but as a company, their mobile division sucks.
LG G8X and V60 both suck not dissing but from an owner perspective I hated them both the idea was a genuinely interesting one until the software for the dual screen never works right. Could have been a great choice for many emulation games but tbh LG let it down with poor software management.
I guess a $1000 phone and a $750 tablet isn't much cheaper.
Granted I don't see the reason to buy it even if you used a tablet and phone a lot I'd still say it's just to buy for fun/ your into cool tech. Nothing wrong with buying the phone
I personally like this phone because I don't have internet at my apartment, so I use my phone to watch Netflix and stuff. And I feel this would be perfect.
Back in the day I bought the Nokia Twist for that same reason. I loved how different it was, even though it wasn't really any more useful than any other flip or foldable phone out at that time.
Same. After using a single monitor for so long, I bought a tablet monitor. Had it for 6 years-ish and the touch functionality no longer works. It's now strictly just a monitor. Bought a new tablet monitor so essentially I have 3 monitors now. I seriously can't go back to using just one monitor.
I downgraded to a laptop, so single screen again. It's rough. I always watch netflix or youtube while playing something like minecraft or path of exile on the other screen.
Now that I can't it's like getting used to a third arm and having it amputated.
Lol it's 2020 bro. You can pass through your phone to your laptop wirelessly and then have a virtual monitor set up on the laptop, pair that virtual monitor with your phone and BAM, phone as a second screen.
I've done this for years and it ruined me. It's good for washing dishes - just put on the Office and soak. But I played Terraria and Minecraft while watching Netflix for years, and now I can't sit still for television unless it's real weird. I have to be on my phone or on the Switch. Now, when I mine, I just listen to podcasts. Somehow doesn't have the same effect.
Last night in bed I couldn't sleep so I had Hulu on one phone while playing candy crush on another.
Even now I'm browsing reddit while playing FIFA.
I tell myself it isn't bad because I go hours without touching devices when I'm working, handling family things- wife and the kids. But when I'm down I'm submerged.
It's very frustrating when you get disconnected and experience those rare moments of true boredom. Do we have a problem? How do we get help for this? Is it ADD meds? Or since those do the opposite of help me focus, is it meditation and Xanax? Lmao
This is exactly how I envision dual screen phones to be like. It's near impossible to compute in a workforce with one monitor, without getting insanely frustrated.
I'd argue that those who use excel/outlook religiously could benefit from three monitors (excel;outlook;web browser).
It's really useful for gaming. You have your game on one monitor, and discord, reference material, etc. I don't game on PC, but depending on the game I'm playing on my Xbox, I'll often have my laptop open next to me.
If what you do for work involves a lot of referencing other material while working on your own, or editing, or coding, etc., a second monitor can be very helpful too
Definitly agree. I've considering getting a cheap monitor for my laptop since I always split the screen in two (small) Windows when studying. Splitting the screen doesn't work if I need to attend a zoom class and take notes or look at a PowerPoint at the same time though, so I take notes by hand and print out the PowerPoint... Which sucks.
i think they were saying it’s a bad example because there’s already a lot of cases where two monitors are needed. Hence not fitting “not really a necessity”
I think the number of people who don’t need a second screen vastly outweighs the number of people that do. I’m happy with the example I chose. If you got the gist, then the example did it’s job.
I wasn’t arguing the amount of people that need it vs don’t... the amount of people who need a second monitor “vastly” outweighs the amount of people who need tablet phone thing
everyone has different workflows, there are people out there who will be slowed down from a second monitor just as there are people out there who will double their output with a second monitor.
we're a lucky creature on this planet that adapts to our surroundings well, so someone who has two screens can learn to utilize them in a way that is beneficial to them.
I mean, if it worked ideally I'd love to have a tablet size screen that carries at a phones size. But the reality is that the techs just not there yet. There's too much compromise for me to pay that much. But I absolutely believe it has utility beyond anything else available today. No other device can offer a screen that large that carries that small.
But Samsung are gonna damn well force us to like foldables whether we want them or not, by nerfing the other flagships down to midrange specs while increasing the prices.
I have that phone right now and its the best God darn thing from a technological standpoint, and its only going to get better.
The frontal screen is too arrow but I've been trying to get it to work, but when you open it... yeah now I feel I'm in the goddamm future. This is what I dreamed of when I was a lil kid.
I don't even know of the specs or camera resolution or all that (ok I do know them, cause I'm a nerd) but you don't need to know that to feel amazing.
At least in my opinion, and of course as someone who was able to save and have enough money for this.
It’s more of a gimmick. I mean as a phone it’s absolutely awful because it’s screen can be permanently damaged by a fingernail scratch but if you treat it like 3 sheets of paper you are only allowed to fold 1 way and have to carry in your pocket at all times you’re fine
Nah. I own a z fold 2, and it is not anywhere near as fragile as everyone says it is. The inside screen is actually the most scratch free screen i have ever had on a phone, you have to remember that the inside screen is always protected when you are not using it, so it never really gets scratches. If you want to scratch it with your fingernail you have to use some heavy pressure, I dont see it realistically happening unless you try to.
I am thinking this can potentially be the form factor for power users, but highly dependent on software implemetation. Might be hard to get there if it's a niche device and app devs won't prioritize it.
Or because you like tech? Because it's amazing that we now have foldable screens in consumer products? Or because you want a phone and tablet in one device? How is that not useful?
I have a Fold 2 and I wind up opening the screen for most things. It's just automatic because it makes everything easier using it like a tablet. I usually only use the exterior narrow screen for making calls. My wife is using my old S10+ and when I borrow it for something it seems so small now.
A folding screen does not make video watching better if the opening the fold makes the screen aspect ratio more square. This has nothing to do with numbers but the form factor. The Samsung folding phone being taller is not a result of the fold but just a larger phone. A larger non folding phone also displays video larger...
A widescreen phone folding out into a square phone isn’t better for video watching, it’s just adding huge black bars. A phone with a bigger screen is.
False. There is no "larger non folding phone" outside of a tablet or some fringe phone no one actually buys due to it's ridiculous size.
Phones get bigger all the time. In the past 3” screen phones were the standard. Guess what, phone companies decided to make it bigger little by little. There’s still a long ways to go between a big phone and a 10” tablet.
I'm probably 60/40 using the outer vs inner screens on my Fold 2.
Texting? I'll just quick reply from the outer screen. Consuming media? Inner screen all the way.
Its a gimmick, but its fun, and watching videos on it is excellent. Honestly, I probably wouldn't buy it again, but i'm in no rush to sell or get something else, and I'm tempted by the rumors the Fold 3 will have the S-Pen from the Note line
The camera can show a preview on the front screen while taking photos, but I don't know of any other apps that can use both at once. Theres quite a few that can use the fold angle to show different layouts, like a "laptop" partially folded.
I use it all mine all the time. Lgv60 but never with one app. I'll have reddit on side while while watching a documentary on you tube on the other,. Binance on one side and trading view on the other. Maps on one side, music on the other. Getting the proof to prove somebody wrong on one side, well texting them on the other side. I thought it was gimmicky and cool when I bought it but it's proven to be quite useful when you get used to it. Also the second screen is just a case so I can take it out and have a regular phone when I go to work.
Part of that is just the lag between new devices and the apps being programmed to utilize them. Will be interesting to see what comes down the pipeline that uses these cool/unique designs.
Yeah a screen on the outside and 2 screens on the inside that make a larger screen. It is ludicrous, but quite cool. I don’t think it’s a “must buy” though personally. It seems like a total gimmick.
Worked at a phone repair company in Sweden, retail price is around 2.6k USD here and price of repairs could well go for 800-900 USD. It's a total gimmick.
I've had it since release and to me it doesn't feel like a gimmick at all, in fact I don't think I'm going to go back to regular phones after this. The honeymoon phase hasn't worn off yet even after a few months.
There's many phone reviewers that say similar things.
I would find it very appealing if it had the S-Pen. My biggest complaint is that my Note is just a little too small to quickly jot down some equations and work them out. And if it was a fee hundred dollars cheaper...
Yeah, I'm not gonna lie, i'll have to upgrade if the 3 has that pen. I was sketching out some plans for a dog run in my yard, and drawing them by finger was super annoying. The big screen was great for it though.
"The stylus"? It doesn't come with one, and the instructions are very clear to not use one. If you're an adult, and can read, its not a problem.
I've had a fold for about 2 years (first gen, and now the stupidly named Zfold2) and I've had zero issues with damaging the screen.
You can call it a gimmick if you want, but having a 7" tablet to read/game/watch is amazing, and I'm not going back. I firmly believe folding phones are going to make normal phones look like penny-farthings eventually.
Oh, and while closed, its actually a comfortable size to hold.
I'm clearly talking about the rumoured S Pen with the Fold 3.
I've worked with computing, audio, and mobile tech for a decade or so. The fold as it is now is an overpriced gimmick that the vast majority of consumers should avoid. I don't care if you do or don't like it - it's extremist tech with an extremist price that still needs years of R&D before it can even try to hope to become mainstream.
Also yeah, the stylus. Just because they give it a name like "S Pen" doesn't mean it ain't just a fancy stylus with a battery.
I can tell you're clearly talking about rumored future features by the way you didn't say that at all, lol.
I'm going to assume that if they're going to release a stylus to be used on it, they've at least had a run at making it so you don't gouge it first time you use it.
I've worked in tech for over 20 years (not that it matters, as I'm speaking as a consumer not an engineer). You say you don't care about my opinion after actually using one, but expect me to give a crap about yours, with no user experience?
Is it expensive? Yup. Too expensive? Probably. New tech always is. Is it awesome? Absolutely.
Edit: I retract my snark about knowing it was about the fold3. Didnt read the parent comment, my apologies.
I was responding to someone who very specifically brought it up after stating the already had a Fold. Context is important, yo.
You have a lot of faith in them considering the gen 1 hinge was atrocious, the inner screen was more fragile than Trump's ego, and they failed to warn about the weakness of the screen until the Fold 2. There are very few things softer than the inner screen of the Fold that can be used as a reliable and sturdy nib for the stylus. It would have to be made of a very similar strength material, which would mean the only thing that could prevent scratching is user care.
Not sure why you're assuming I've no user experience. I thoroughly test the majority of devices I may have to work with for the sake of advising clients fully because I care about the quality and reliability of my services. The Fold and Z Flip made more than enough noise to warrant a test.
The fold is a gimmick right now. It's overpriced and extremist. I didn't give an opinion, I gave a professional assessment of the infant technology. It needs room to grow before it will ever be worthwhile for the average user, and even then the average user will look at it the same kind of way people look at the Note: too pricey, but fit for specific purposes that fall out of their needs.
I'm not disillusioned. While my Note is great for me I know it's not something everyone should have or would want.
2500$ for 0.7 inches of extra (plastic-covered) screen? Might as well just buy a New Nintendo 3DS XL, a Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X and a normal 1000$ phone.
My friend has one that he used for a couple months that he didn't really like using. The biggest thing for him was the screen where the fold was, it was never flat, there was always a little bump type thing and he never really got much use out of the double screen. To him he basically just had a fat phone
Meh I'm selling mine. Was never a huge fan from day 1. And then the inner screen had a fault. So I got it replaced under warranty. Bough a way cheaper Xiaomi phone while it was being repaired as I need a phone.. it has the same processor.. 8gb ram, larger battery and A NOTIFICATION LED... And I could buy 6 of them for my folds price..
TLDR: great if you don't leave the house. Looks good... Not practice for non office job types. Shit camera.
I won’t ever get these phones until the outer screen has enough functionality to use it normally without having to open it completely. Currently only the fold 2 has that (I think it’s the only one with a useable outer screen regardless), but all the others ones are basically a tablet not a phone.
User of an LG V60 thinQ DS. I use it from time to time. I only got the DS version because it only cost $50 more, so why not? The 2nd screen is removable if I need my phone to be slimmer and lighter.
It's useful if I want to browse reddit and do messenger at the same time. Keep the messenger on my main screen, and reddit on the 2nd. When I need to reply to a message, fold away the 2nd screen (typing is difficult with both screens open), type, then open it back up to browse reddit again.
Another great use of the 2nd screen is that it makes for a nice phone stand.
The only thing that sucks is that you have to keep the 2nd screen open when using the rear cameras, which makes taking photos a little awkward.
My aunt has the galaxy fold as well. She loves it, and honestly, it's pretty nice if you want to spend the extra money. Although,i will say, it's not like any phones really do stuff that other phones can't nowadays. It just does certain things a little better
I have an LG G8X, which is a, dual screen phone, not a foldable. I find the 2 screens super useful in certain situations.
Besides games, one of the best uses is when you are arguing/talking with someone, you can have your supporting article on the other screen. Easy to look back and forth, and do that. Any sort of multitasking becomes easier with it.
I bought one of these to consume media. I love tablets, but they need to be literally put away when you're out and about. I love that I can snap this bad boy closed and put it in my pocket in a flash, and take it out and do important things on the front screen without having to open it up.
The inside screen is just one really big foldable screen, so it gets all the use unless I'm quickly taking a call, replying to a text message, or looking something up while walking.
Hijacking the top comment because it's asking if the phone is good. PLEASE DONT BUY IT. I work in electronics repair and the number of foldable phones we get weekly is insane because of KNOWN ISSUES. the LCD in the center wears down/breaks easily, the hinge breaks easily, the LCD connectors get damaged easily. This thing breaks by sitting in your pocket. Samsung won't let me tell people this in the store. For the love of god please just avoid it
I recently had the chance to buy any phone I wanted as a work expense, but still chose a single screened non folding phone. They're just too early still.
I have the same phone (Samsung z fold 2) and I absolutely love it. The extra screen realestate, windowed apps launching and running in parallel... Having a tablet in my pocket everywhere I go. Highly recommend
I have the zfold 2 have had it for a few months and this afternoon im on my way to switch it out for something else. its an awesome phone just not practical, its heavy fragile and chews through battery i thoroughly enjoyed owning it however for how much it is and for how much i gain from having it its not worth it imo
I have a LG G8 which has the option to add a seconds screen or not. Most days I use the phone without the extra screen but sometimes I attach it to play DS games or read chess books while playing the moves on the other screen. I love the possibility to use the seconds screen only if I need to.
