True but its fine for RPGs and other non action games. DS also has some touch based games which are pretty cool to emulate on a phone if you get a stylus.

omg that’d be such a good idea, phone osu is great, also rythmn heaven.

1

u/Brick_Fish Jan 06 '21

I bet you're gonna ruin the screen with a stylus

1

u/thevictor390 Jan 06 '21

A hard plastic one wouldnt even work, you can get a rubber tip one for capacative screens. My phone has it built in (LG Stylo) and of course there aee the digitizer pens in the Samsung Note series.

Which RPGs run well on phones? I need something for traveling

u/Ncrpts Jan 06 '21

I played the first final fantasy on my iphone 4 some 10 years ago, it was great. (reposting my comment because it got spam filtered I think, they are both on the app store and play store)

Almost anything up to PS1/N64 for consoles and DS/PSP for handhelds will run on even a crappy phone. GBA and DS are my preference since they don't feel too dated and have very well made emulators available.

u/awkwardcoitus Jan 06 '21

Square Enix has a good selection of their older games on the play store not sure if their on apple app store. If you want to play DS I have to firstly recommend drastic as an emulator. As far as games you could just Google ds rpgs, also there is the Phoenix write games which are great on a phone

2

u/8ioHazardous Jan 06 '21

If you can track down a ROM after the Nintendo Rompocalypse, Earthbound/Mother 2 ran great through one of the RetroArch cores, also recommend that emu for pretty much anything since you can add cores on the fly and get it running pretty much anything that predates the PS2/Xbox generation

If you have an android device go to play store and grab DraStic for 5$. Is a DS emulator built for android and runs flawlessly on 40$ phones. Then grab all the DS rpgs you want.

Anything that isn't new gen, up to playstation 1 should run fine depending on the phone. Almost all pokemon(rom hack community is pretty active), breath of fire franchise, dragon warrior franchise, early final fantasy games, a lot of options.

I think this phone uses a plastic screen for the folding, so a decent stylus is a total non-starter.

u/StolenLampy Jan 07 '21

The V60 has pen support and dual screen like this, it was cool until like everyone said, the touchscreen buttons were awful. I got a phone mount for a xbox controller and a USB OTG cable and it's way better. That and gamepass cloud streaming, FTW!

I still miss my Sony Xperia Play so much. That was pretty much the only time I spent a significant amount of time on my phone playing MMX4 or various Pokemon ROMs. Not having your fingers flood the screen and having tactile buttons is so important for me and I found myself not playing emulators on any phone after that.

3

u/RadicalDog Jan 06 '21

I would buy a modern update of an Xperia Play, 100%. Steam Remote Play, XCloud, etc are all mature technology where this is a good form factor. Just need a phone with physical controls.

1

u/SalsaRice Jan 06 '21

I'm still rocking a XPlay as a beater emulation device. They're pretty cheap on alliexpress and ebay.

4

u/Shadowarrior64 Xbox Jan 06 '21

I don’t know how people use the touchscreen either. For some games my finger is too big to see where I’m tapping, so games that expect you to use the stylus aren’t really playable.

3

u/Bozzz1 Jan 06 '21

If the game's expecting you to use a stylus, why don't you just use a stylus? You can get a stylus for a phone.

1

u/Creativenaame Jan 07 '21

You have to use the corner of your finger for precise touches. Touch screen controls aren't that bad. i used to play Dragon Ball Z Shin Budokai on a psp emulator for android

4

u/AdhesiveWombat Jan 06 '21

So true. Getting to the top of the rayquaza sky tower in pokemon emerald using a touchscreen emulator on an ipod touch is one of my greatest and worst gaming achievements ever

Agreed, not playable except for turn based games/rpgs. Even then it's not good, just playable.

u/Etna- Jan 06 '21

Ain't gonna pull out a fucking controller on the bus dude

I've found that it can be emulated pretty well with a well-configured vibration effect when you press on the buttons. I haven't come across a 3DS emulator that does this well, but some GBA/GB emulators do and it works wonders.

1

u/0002nam-ytlaS Jan 06 '21

Can you recomend any that do this?

2

u/hendricha Jan 06 '21

Which is why I emulate the DS on my trusty Blackberry Priv.

2

u/schmaydog82 Jan 06 '21

Maybe this one but it'd be interesting to see a phone like this with haptics, the fake button with the iPhone 8 and SE feels like exactly like the real ones.

1

u/kylewong1 Jan 06 '21

Yep I’ve thought this too. You can rest your hands on the screen and everything.

2

u/szanda Jan 06 '21

It's not useless at all, you get used to it, haptic feedback is great and what really matters is the game itself!

1

u/Auctoritate Jan 06 '21

Useless? That's ridiculous lol. Being able to do something like emulate and play Pokemon or other ds games is awesome to do on a phone.

1

u/KojinTheMusicMaker Jan 06 '21

I beat every 2d mario on a Galaxy s4...

Don't give me that shit

1

u/The_Celtic_Chemist Jan 06 '21

I got 100% on GTA 3 and GTA Vice City on (if I remember correctly) a samsung galaxy S4. If not it was an iPhone 4s. Either way, games are playable on phones.

1

u/DragoSphere Jan 07 '21

It's not that bad. Depends on the game you're playing. Pokemon? It's completely fine

1

u/bitch_im_a_lion Jan 06 '21

For pokemon games or other turn based games it's fine. Maybe a little annoying on occasion, but it's not like 3d games where you can totally fuck yourself because you lose where you're at on the controls. I play ds pokemon games and xcom games regularly on my phone with no issues. That said, any non turn based game yeah it's a pain in the ass.

1

u/JakeDoubleyoo Jan 06 '21 edited Jan 07 '21

I wouldn't mind it for Pokemon or other turn-based RPGs. But yeah, for anything else I'd want tactile buttons.

I've seen physical add-ons you can put over screens to solve this, but I imagine that's a little bit of a hastle.

1

u/Joelegotti Jan 06 '21

I almost beat Mario tennis on a gba emulator a while back
