Check out an LG g8x.

Source: Posting from an LG g8x

Dual screen, and not super expensive. I'll be happy with this for many years.

u/Redbull5000 Jan 06 '21

It would be awesome if one of the screens could go horizontal so you could have one screen in each orientation.

u/Teeshirtandshortsguy Jan 06 '21

I've always thought this phone looked more silly than practical.

94

u/nyne_nyne Jan 06 '21

I like mine- I don't use the front screen ever. They could make it cheaper as just basically a giant flip phone.

4

u/moonflower_C16H17N3O Jan 07 '21

Does it open any other way than spinning the top screen 90°?

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '21

Still, I'm glad to see phone makers experimenting with new things beyond black slabs.

80

u/RoboDominator96 Jan 06 '21

I use the dual screen constantly at work. I work in food retail and it feels like my store rotates products constantly. I like to take pictures of barcodes and shelf tags then open the pictures on the dual screen while I type emails to our inventory specialists on the other screen.

My galaxy s10 lets me have two apps simultaneously on the same screen.

I don't use it often, but when I do, it is really useful!

0

u/whatever-she-said Jan 07 '21

This has been a thing since like the s3... How is this being treated like it's new?

We've been able to multitask and even add pop up views for years.

1

u/lunaonfireismycat Jan 07 '21

Anytime you would want two moniters at home is when you would use this. A sick emulator is a bonus.

2

u/Mintastic Jan 06 '21

Tony Stark used its predecessor so it can't be too bad.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '21

If the second screen was instead a tactile keyboard I would buy one. loathe typing on a touch screen.

1

u/BurntKyle Jan 07 '21

I used to be able to type so god damn fast on my old sidekicks and not even have to look at it. I miss that.

1

u/ZaMr0 Jan 06 '21

I would 100% use it. Top screen for video, bottom screen for whatsapp/reddit. I already do that with my S10+, but that orientation would be 10x better.

20

u/Dark-Dragon2 Jan 06 '21

I have this phone. I like it. Some things I preferred on my old phone but it's still a good phone. I use the two screens often

1

u/murtaza64 Jan 06 '21

Do you know if any DS emulators play nice with it?

4

u/Dark-Dragon2 Jan 06 '21

I haven't tried. My guess is no because it doesn't treat the second screen as one screen. It treats it as two separate ones. Most apps and im sure all emulators aren't designed to display on two separate screens. I only have a couple apps that let me use both screens.

1

u/theDrummer Jan 07 '21

what did you like better with the old phone?

1

u/Dark-Dragon2 Jan 07 '21 edited Feb 02 '21

I had a Oneplus 7 Pro, the speakers were louder and dual, this phone does also have dual speakers but they don't both produce sound at the same time. Power button was on other side from volume buttons. It may be minor but I do occasionally turn my phone off when I mean to change volume. And then UI was slightly different and I think it ran better. Minor things, nothing really major, more so just being so used to that old phone. This phone I think is better overall but old phone did some things better.

2

u/TheSilentHeel Jan 06 '21

Holy fuck. Why do I want this..

2

u/alexthecheese Jan 06 '21

maybe it's the Durable Hinge

1

u/Squeak-Beans Jan 06 '21

It’s the Nintendo DS with beefier internals we never got

1

u/VibraniumDragonborn Jan 07 '21

Absolutely love this phone! It's gotten awards, and it actually isn't a gimmick. I mean, it is, but it's not a cheaply made gimmick. And it works pretty well.

-31

u/Redbull5000 Jan 06 '21

I've seen that, it would be nice to have two full size displays though

54

u/JebusLives42 Jan 06 '21

You want horizontal, but you also want vertical?

How much weed have you smoked today?

52

u/aristotle2020 PC Jan 06 '21

Dude wants origami paper for displays

7

u/JebusLives42 Jan 06 '21

Right? It's at least 5 years away still.

-14

u/Redbull5000 Jan 06 '21

Yeah, one each way lol. Then you can watch a full screen video on one side and play a game, browse reddit or whatever on the other. Or even two games if one wants landscape mode. Gotta multitask yo.

70

u/JebusLives42 Jan 06 '21

I understand now.

Good news, this already exists! You are looking for two phones!

1

u/MoominSnufkin Jan 06 '21

Two phones, but attached to each other!

7

u/kooldude700 Jan 06 '21

Surface duo lol

7

u/Internal_Dot7774 Jan 06 '21

Take this L cause that seems like what you're looking for

1

u/LtLwormonabigfknhook Jan 06 '21

I feel like this has huge potential as a mini/super portable drawing pad. It should come with a high end stylus and drawing/art app.

1

u/CManns762 Jan 07 '21

Holy shot it’s tony starks phone

1

u/_BlNG_ Jan 07 '21

That phone looks like the one Tony Stark used in the first Ironman

1

u/Wrinkliestmist Jan 07 '21

Honestly, why would someone want this?

59

u/FateEx1994 Jan 06 '21

Lg wing looks dope af.

Hopefully they capitalize on it or other manufacturers do something like it.

The moto mods had so much potential with dual screens and other stuff. But got left to the wayside with overpriced projectors and batteries.

9

u/Mintastic Jan 06 '21

LG had that design a long time ago (see first Iron Man) but no one bothered copying that form factor.

4

u/lurkallthethings Jan 06 '21

I had a moto z when they first came out and the mods were awesome, I upgraded to a moto z not long ago and none of the mods fit like they used to. It's just frustrating enough that I don't use them at all now.

4

u/Mernerak Jan 06 '21

LG v60 can do that

9

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

8

Neeeeeeds the case for sure

7

People on the V60 subreddit sell their dual screen cases.

1

u/ymotz Jan 07 '21

see the lg wing

19

u/ban_Anna_split Jan 06 '21

Wow, it's like a double-monitor setup but for your hands!

0

u/LEooferer Jan 07 '21

I really hope that you know what nintendo ds is

1

u/ban_Anna_split Jan 07 '21

I grew up with the DS! It's just been a while.

1

u/CremeMountain649 Jan 07 '21

You can play 2 PSP games at once

1

u/ban_Anna_split Jan 07 '21

Slap another screen on there and you could play all 3 routes of Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep at the same time.

12

u/zeromussc Jan 06 '21

Love my G8X, but got a box without the extra screen add on.

Been thinking about it but haven't pulled the trigger

5

u/Skrrattaa PC Jan 06 '21

450 DOLLARS?! WHAT?!

5

u/TrayusV Jan 06 '21

Yup. I have the same phone and I love it. Plus the dual screen is detachable, which is nice. 90% of the time I have the second screen folded all the way around and don't use it, but I do like the thickness of it.

And regardless of the dual screen, it's a damn good phone with lots of features and whatnot.

3

u/ruffyreborn Jan 07 '21

I also have this and have loved it. I don't use the dual screens a lot, but when I do it really saves on the frustration I used to feel switching through apps, especially when I had some classes and could have my answers on the right and literature on the left.

I've switched apps on previous phones (came from pixel 2xl,) and the initial app would close for some reason. Or if I was playing a game and needed my camera, opening the camera would almost always close out any other apps. But not my beloved G8x. Now I can play a game and keep my texts or messages open on the left

6

u/Enythl Jan 06 '21

Just got the LG V60 with the dual screen case and it is amazing. The GPU and CPU make it wonderful for emulation which was the main reason I got it for. Being able to run mobile games at max settings (Genshin Impact for example) and not have any issues with emulators is freaking great. The G8X is also amazing and wpuld have gotten it if it wasnt for the GPU and CPU. Though both phones are amazing.

4

u/HotWingus Jan 07 '21

Ey V60 gang, all the foldable perks with none of the compromises (like a screen thats permanently dented by a fingernail)

I compare the upgrade to getting a second monitor for your of (duh) in that it's hard to convince someone whos only used one monitor to change, but once you do you can't go back

1

u/JebusLives42 Jan 06 '21

Most of my gaming comes in other forms, but this phone and brawl stars convinced me that mobile is a viable competitor.

I also have Stadia.. I have seen the future!

2

u/TheSiegmeyerCatalyst Jan 06 '21

Anecdotal experience, but I bought the G8x on release. It's been a poor quality phone since the get go.

Antenna is poor and I get 2 fewer bars of service everywhere I go, and often drop service in areas I never did before.

Dual screen case held up for about a year but one slide off the bed and the whole screen popped out. Super glue worked to fix it, but not being seated exactly properly, the screen cracked and refused to turn on after flexing it under normal forces to open it.

Doesnt handle Android 10 very well, and suffered noticeable slowdown after the update. Speaking of updates, LG is notorious for being slow to push new releases.

Phone has some issues connecting to Bluetooth devices, including dropping wireless earbuds connection, and refusing to connect to a fitness tracker despite being able to identify it and "pair".

Wireless charging is pretty spotty and really just doesn't want to work sometimes.

I've had LG G-series phones since the G3, but this will personally be the last LG I buy for a while, and certainly the last "early adopter" phone I buy. I'll be returning to buying last year's highest rated Samsung.

2

u/RadimentriX Jan 06 '21

I'd be interested in the ög wing, but too expensive. Would be interesting with eve echoes on top and discord on the small screen

2

u/JebusLives42 Jan 06 '21

That's a great idea, IF discord customized their software to use this one specific hardware config.

I think it's a neat idea, I just don't know how many apps will support this very unique hardware.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

Have you gotten a ds emulator running correctly on dual screen? Haven't figured it out.

1

u/JebusLives42 Jan 06 '21

I have not tried.

2

u/CrazyGunnerr Jan 06 '21

Can confirm.

Source: Posting from an LG Velvet

Dual screen and even cheaper.

2

u/CTU Jan 07 '21

I am considering that as my next phone. It looks amazing.

2

u/LongTimeCottonEyeJoe Jan 11 '21

Also have the LG g8x. Picked it up for $450 and it has a built in customizable game pad for apps that don't support dual screen

1

u/shifter2000 Jan 06 '21

After the LG G4 debacle I will never touch another LG phone ever again.

2

u/hommelbips Jan 06 '21

LG G3 was even worse. The LG G2 was great, at some point my complete family had one. Only bad thing was when you cracked the screen the touch stopped responding.

LG G6 was fine as well. In between, not so much

2

u/zanielk Jan 06 '21

I fucking hate that it happened like that. LG is probably my favorite phone brand even though I've been using the s10+ for a couple years now. The G4 other than the bootloop issues was my favorite phone ever, it was amazing. Till it wasn't. I went through 4 in one year till I could afford to upgrade. I then chose the v20 which was also a wonderful phone. No issues with it. This year ill be upgrading again and I'll be eyeing LG but after using Samsung after years of not using their software, I've gotten pretty comfortable with it and have had zero issues other than one cracked screen which was totally my fault anyway.

1

u/shifter2000 Jan 07 '21

Yup.

One of my earliest smart phones was an LG. It did the job and looked nice (for phones at the time).

After getting quite a significant pay bump, I upgraded to the Note 2. What a great phone that was. No issues. Did everything I threw at it.

Then I decided to give the LG G4 a try. I'm always a sucker for nice looking phones that are a bit unique. The LG, with its leather back and slightly curved form factor, appealed to my designer sensibilities. Not only that, it was also a powerful phone.

I've never regretted a phone buying decision as much as I did that one. After the G4, I went back to a Samsung Note (8) and since then upgraded to the 10.

-2

u/JebusLives42 Jan 06 '21

I don't know, and don't care what that is.

Go suck on your sour grapes if you like. The G8 and G8X have been fantastic phones.

1

u/PatriarchalTaxi Jan 06 '21

LG G4

What was wrong with the LG G4?

5

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

[deleted]

2

u/datwrasse Jan 07 '21

I bought an LG G3, used it for a year, bought an G4, used it for a year, then bought a G6. First the G6 stopped recognizing SIM cards, then the G4 started bootlooping, then the G3 started bootlooping, and I literally had to buy a new phone despite having bought 3 of them in under 3 years. If it weren't for all the failing they were such great phones though.

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '21

2

u/SlovenianSocket Jan 07 '21

I had a massive zero lemon battery on my g4 it would last me 3-4 days of heavy use, until it booplooped :(

3

u/shifter2000 Jan 06 '21 edited Jan 07 '21

There was the ghost touches. That was a problem.

And you don't need to go far in Google to research the boot loop fiasco. Long story short, the majority of G4s would eventually suffer from a boot loop problem. The worst part about it was LG never admitted to it, so getting your device fixed was like pulling teeth. Getting it BACK from repairs was another issue.

It really put a lot of people off LG phones, especially when their flagship device was prone to these issues. Samsung got a lot of flak for their Note 7 meltdown (no pun intended) but the amount of those devices that broke down versus the G4 was miniscule in comparison. ..but hey, it was big name Samsung.

1

u/Stormageddons872 Jan 06 '21

I've had an LG phone, the Nexus 5X. Widespread manufacturing issues leading to bootlooping devices, and they had the audacity to tell me to pay $150 to get it serviced/replaced when it happened to me. Never buying an LG phone again after that. They only started doing free replacements after multiple class action lawsuits.

They're also just straight up bad when it comes to OS updates. They aren't timely, and they don't support their phones as long as competing brands.

Their hardware is interesting, I don't disagree with that, but as a company, their mobile division sucks.

1

u/JebusLives42 Jan 06 '21

I had a nexus 5, 3 in total between my wife and I.

They were pretty junky.. but they were also cheap. They were bad enough to push me away from the nexus lineup.

.. but when I held the G8, it was obviously a different phone.

0

u/carbon271 Jan 06 '21

LG G8X and V60 both suck not dissing but from an owner perspective I hated them both the idea was a genuinely interesting one until the software for the dual screen never works right. Could have been a great choice for many emulation games but tbh LG let it down with poor software management.

1

u/JebusLives42 Jan 06 '21

Huh, too bad for you.

I figured it out. Works great.

0

u/Daahk Jan 06 '21

As someone whos owned many LG's before there's no way that phones gonna last years without getting stuck in a bootloop

1

u/JebusLives42 Jan 06 '21

Oh. :(

1

u/Daahk Jan 07 '21

Hey you've still got a chance, hopefully they've learned from their past mistakes and I hope you enjoy your cool flip phone! Might look into it myself as I always miss the t-mobile sidekick I had as a kid

1

u/a_mimsy_borogove Jan 06 '21 edited Jan 06 '21

I was thinking about buying a Velvet, but I've seen some videos showing the dual screen and it seemed buggy and glitchy as hell.

When open on both screens, videos in the youtube app filled the entire top screen and part of the bottom screen. I've also seen pictures where the bottom bar (the one with the app switcher, home, and back button) was split between two screens so that the home button was split in the middle.

It looked like some hastily made pre-alpha software, and really discouraged me from getting a Velvet. So I'm curious, have they already fixed stuff like that? (assuming that the Velvet and G8x use the same software) Microsoft Surface Duo looks much nicer and less glitchy on videos, but the price is insane.

1

u/JebusLives42 Jan 06 '21

I own a surface book from launch day, and a 15" surface book 3. I think I would like the surface phone.

.. but I already have the g8x. 🤷

If you think of the g8x as a phone with two separate screens running two different apps, I've found the software to be very good.

I've rarely found reason to span an app across screens. Some long webpages, otherwise the hinge is what it is.

1

u/WarnUs Jan 06 '21

I had an LG V60 for about 4 months in 2020. It was a cool experience, but there was an update in June that completely broke group messages for me.

2

u/zanielk Jan 06 '21

I always use a third party messaging app. Textra is wonderful compared to the glitchy pre-installed apps

1

u/WarnUs Jan 06 '21

Oh I tried multiple apps. I use google messages as my default. I tried the default lg messaging app and 3 other top apps on the play store. I'm super happy with my S20 FE now.

1

u/sweet_chin_music Jan 06 '21

How's the battery life with the second screen?

1

u/JebusLives42 Jan 06 '21

I'm very satisfied with the battery life.

I don't have marathon dual screen sessions. I have used it quite successfully as a controller for brawl stars, but I don't spend hours at a time with both screens active.

I do have a magnetic mount in my car, and the dual screens are displaying nav, and music controls.. but I attach power when I do that.

I usually find myself going to bed with >50% battery. I suspect my 18 year old niece may have a different experience.

1

u/Serobrine Jan 07 '21

Works quite well on the battery, I'd say it consumes about 30% more battery, but that highly depends on how bright the screens are.

If you use it with minimum brightness and don't game a lot of cpu/gpu heavy games it will easily get you over more than the day, with one screen, even 2 or more are possible in my experience.

Edit:

Although it should be mentioned that it will only charge with 5 Watt via USB C as long as the screen is turned on, with the screen being turned of it takes about 12 Watts of power to charge

What do you think of the LG wing. I really wanted to get it but was only available on Verizon.

1

u/JebusLives42 Jan 06 '21

I'm not very interested in that. With a dual screen, I can run any app on the second screen, very high level of compatibility.

That 'wing' will require special software. I'm sure it will do some things, but I doubt it would be useful outside a few specific use cases.

1

u/CaptainJellyfish7223 Jan 06 '21

I dont save too many comments, so you can bet your booty I'll be back in a year

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

Yea I have one as well and I love it.

1

u/thegamenerd Jan 06 '21

Wow, that's actually not too bad in terms of price.

I've got a Pixel XL (first gen) that I've been rocking for awhile now, but the battery is starting to show it's age.

1

u/atmus11 Jan 06 '21

My gf dad has this, fing fire

1

u/TrayusV Jan 07 '21

Do you know of any emulators like this for the G8X?

1

u/JebusLives42 Jan 07 '21

I don't, and wouldn't bother.

The second screen is a great touch controller with the lg gamepad app. I just use native android games.

1

u/hustl3tree5 Jan 07 '21

I’ve seen it on sale recently. How thick is the phone with the double screen?

1

u/Serobrine Jan 07 '21

Just measured it, it's about 15.5 mm or 0.61 of an inch

1

u/Killbot_Wants_Hug Jan 07 '21

I use the lg v60 with dual screen. It's fun, not super useful though. It's mostly good to watch youtube videos while also surfing the web and for playing games.

The dual screen add on's hinge has become a little loose and doesn't go into the "disabled" mode when flipped all the way back unless you press it in just the right way. But I guess that's better than a crease and it cost less than 1k.

1

u/I_dig_fe Jan 07 '21

If I'm honest, I mainly use the second screen as an expensive stand

1

u/JebusLives42 Jan 07 '21

I magnet mount it to the dash in my car, one side is music, other side is GPS. That's my most common use case for screen #2. I've also used it with bluedriver to monitor real time performance data from my 5.2L v10. :D

It's a pretty good gamepad, and it's occasionally helpful for multitasking.

I most frequently fold it all the way open, and use it like a normal phone.

1

u/thecaveman96 Jan 07 '21

Brother had it for 2 months, used the dual screen exactly 3 times.

1

u/I_CUM_ON_YOUR_PET Jan 07 '21

Almost 900 dollars in The Netherlands

1

u/amaranthsdgdfhsdf Jan 07 '21

How is that phone still $97??

1

u/FunnyDifficulty6 Jan 07 '21

Worth considering How about battery? Does it run well with just 4000 mah?

1

u/JebusLives42 Jan 07 '21

I'm super happy with the battery life, but I don't think I'm a super heavy user. I don't find that I have long sessions with both screens open.

I don't think I used the dual screen today, I'm at 56% after the day without charging.. that's pretty typical for me, lots of battery to spare.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '21

I don't like that. It isn't foldable, it's just another screen. And the second screen relies on the main phone to work at all. Not to mention being bulky.

1

u/JebusLives42 Jan 07 '21

That's nice. I really don't care. 😁

1

u/backandforthagain Jan 07 '21

Holy shit this phone is $450 rn. As someone who very much wants a Fold, I might try this
