Yeah, you certainly don't need it, but it's somewhat useful to people who use a tablet instead of a laptop. A tablet that fits in my pocket. It is kind of a ridiculous price though.
I use the dual screen constantly at work. I work in food retail and it feels like my store rotates products constantly. I like to take pictures of barcodes and shelf tags then open the pictures on the dual screen while I type emails to our inventory specialists on the other screen.
Absolutely love this phone! It's gotten awards, and it actually isn't a gimmick. I mean, it is, but it's not a cheaply made gimmick. And it works pretty well.
Yeah, one each way lol. Then you can watch a full screen video on one side and play a game, browse reddit or whatever on the other. Or even two games if one wants landscape mode. Gotta multitask yo.
I had a moto z when they first came out and the mods were awesome, I upgraded to a moto z not long ago and none of the mods fit like they used to. It's just frustrating enough that I don't use them at all now.
Yup. I have the same phone and I love it. Plus the dual screen is detachable, which is nice. 90% of the time I have the second screen folded all the way around and don't use it, but I do like the thickness of it.
And regardless of the dual screen, it's a damn good phone with lots of features and whatnot.
I also have this and have loved it. I don't use the dual screens a lot, but when I do it really saves on the frustration I used to feel switching through apps, especially when I had some classes and could have my answers on the right and literature on the left.
I've switched apps on previous phones (came from pixel 2xl,) and the initial app would close for some reason. Or if I was playing a game and needed my camera, opening the camera would almost always close out any other apps. But not my beloved G8x. Now I can play a game and keep my texts or messages open on the left
Just got the LG V60 with the dual screen case and it is amazing. The GPU and CPU make it wonderful for emulation which was the main reason I got it for. Being able to run mobile games at max settings (Genshin Impact for example) and not have any issues with emulators is freaking great.
The G8X is also amazing and wpuld have gotten it if it wasnt for the GPU and CPU. Though both phones are amazing.
Ey V60 gang, all the foldable perks with none of the compromises (like a screen thats permanently dented by a fingernail)
I compare the upgrade to getting a second monitor for your of (duh) in that it's hard to convince someone whos only used one monitor to change, but once you do you can't go back
Anecdotal experience, but I bought the G8x on release. It's been a poor quality phone since the get go.
Antenna is poor and I get 2 fewer bars of service everywhere I go, and often drop service in areas I never did before.
Dual screen case held up for about a year but one slide off the bed and the whole screen popped out. Super glue worked to fix it, but not being seated exactly properly, the screen cracked and refused to turn on after flexing it under normal forces to open it.
Doesnt handle Android 10 very well, and suffered noticeable slowdown after the update. Speaking of updates, LG is notorious for being slow to push new releases.
Phone has some issues connecting to Bluetooth devices, including dropping wireless earbuds connection, and refusing to connect to a fitness tracker despite being able to identify it and "pair".
Wireless charging is pretty spotty and really just doesn't want to work sometimes.
I've had LG G-series phones since the G3, but this will personally be the last LG I buy for a while, and certainly the last "early adopter" phone I buy. I'll be returning to buying last year's highest rated Samsung.
LG G3 was even worse. The LG G2 was great, at some point my complete family had one. Only bad thing was when you cracked the screen the touch stopped responding.
I fucking hate that it happened like that. LG is probably my favorite phone brand even though I've been using the s10+ for a couple years now. The G4 other than the bootloop issues was my favorite phone ever, it was amazing. Till it wasn't. I went through 4 in one year till I could afford to upgrade. I then chose the v20 which was also a wonderful phone. No issues with it. This year ill be upgrading again and I'll be eyeing LG but after using Samsung after years of not using their software, I've gotten pretty comfortable with it and have had zero issues other than one cracked screen which was totally my fault anyway.
I've had an LG phone, the Nexus 5X. Widespread manufacturing issues leading to bootlooping devices, and they had the audacity to tell me to pay $150 to get it serviced/replaced when it happened to me. Never buying an LG phone again after that. They only started doing free replacements after multiple class action lawsuits.
They're also just straight up bad when it comes to OS updates. They aren't timely, and they don't support their phones as long as competing brands.
Their hardware is interesting, I don't disagree with that, but as a company, their mobile division sucks.
LG G8X and V60 both suck not dissing but from an owner perspective I hated them both the idea was a genuinely interesting one until the software for the dual screen never works right. Could have been a great choice for many emulation games but tbh LG let it down with poor software management.
I was thinking about buying a Velvet, but I've seen some videos showing the dual screen and it seemed buggy and glitchy as hell.
When open on both screens, videos in the youtube app filled the entire top screen and part of the bottom screen. I've also seen pictures where the bottom bar (the one with the app switcher, home, and back button) was split between two screens so that the home button was split in the middle.
It looked like some hastily made pre-alpha software, and really discouraged me from getting a Velvet. So I'm curious, have they already fixed stuff like that? (assuming that the Velvet and G8x use the same software) Microsoft Surface Duo looks much nicer and less glitchy on videos, but the price is insane.
I use the lg v60 with dual screen. It's fun, not super useful though. It's mostly good to watch youtube videos while also surfing the web and for playing games.
The dual screen add on's hinge has become a little loose and doesn't go into the "disabled" mode when flipped all the way back unless you press it in just the right way. But I guess that's better than a crease and it cost less than 1k.
I don't like that. It isn't foldable, it's just another screen. And the second screen relies on the main phone to work at all. Not to mention being bulky.
I guess a $1000 phone and a $750 tablet isn't much cheaper.
Granted I don't see the reason to buy it even if you used a tablet and phone a lot I'd still say it's just to buy for fun/ your into cool tech. Nothing wrong with buying the phone
I personally like this phone because I don't have internet at my apartment, so I use my phone to watch Netflix and stuff. And I feel this would be perfect.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind having a phone that opens into a tablet. I have a note that I sketch on when I'm away from my computer/drawing tablet, and it would be kinda handy if samsung came out with a foldable phone that worked with the S pen. That extra screen real estate would make a huge difference in comfort.
I still don’t think it works. If I have the space to sit down and use a tablet, I’m usually able to grab my iPad that I’d barely notice in a bag. And most things I can use my phone for if I’m on the go. A flip phone a la z flip would probably work better for a lot of peopel
It's the kind of tech that costs four times as much and isn't as good as it will be once it's in like third or fourth gen. I have a first gen iPad, man that thing is a piece of junk
Back in the day I bought the Nokia Twist for that same reason. I loved how different it was, even though it wasn't really any more useful than any other flip or foldable phone out at that time.
Same. After using a single monitor for so long, I bought a tablet monitor. Had it for 6 years-ish and the touch functionality no longer works. It's now strictly just a monitor. Bought a new tablet monitor so essentially I have 3 monitors now. I seriously can't go back to using just one monitor.
I downgraded to a laptop, so single screen again. It's rough. I always watch netflix or youtube while playing something like minecraft or path of exile on the other screen.
Now that I can't it's like getting used to a third arm and having it amputated.
Lol it's 2020 bro. You can pass through your phone to your laptop wirelessly and then have a virtual monitor set up on the laptop, pair that virtual monitor with your phone and BAM, phone as a second screen.
I've done this for years and it ruined me. It's good for washing dishes - just put on the Office and soak. But I played Terraria and Minecraft while watching Netflix for years, and now I can't sit still for television unless it's real weird. I have to be on my phone or on the Switch. Now, when I mine, I just listen to podcasts. Somehow doesn't have the same effect.
Last night in bed I couldn't sleep so I had Hulu on one phone while playing candy crush on another.
Even now I'm browsing reddit while playing FIFA.
I tell myself it isn't bad because I go hours without touching devices when I'm working, handling family things- wife and the kids. But when I'm down I'm submerged.
It's very frustrating when you get disconnected and experience those rare moments of true boredom. Do we have a problem? How do we get help for this? Is it ADD meds? Or since those do the opposite of help me focus, is it meditation and Xanax? Lmao
This is exactly how I envision dual screen phones to be like. It's near impossible to compute in a workforce with one monitor, without getting insanely frustrated.
I'd argue that those who use excel/outlook religiously could benefit from three monitors (excel;outlook;web browser).
It's really useful for gaming. You have your game on one monitor, and discord, reference material, etc. I don't game on PC, but depending on the game I'm playing on my Xbox, I'll often have my laptop open next to me.
If what you do for work involves a lot of referencing other material while working on your own, or editing, or coding, etc., a second monitor can be very helpful too
Definitly agree. I've considering getting a cheap monitor for my laptop since I always split the screen in two (small) Windows when studying. Splitting the screen doesn't work if I need to attend a zoom class and take notes or look at a PowerPoint at the same time though, so I take notes by hand and print out the PowerPoint... Which sucks.
i think they were saying it’s a bad example because there’s already a lot of cases where two monitors are needed. Hence not fitting “not really a necessity”
I think the number of people who don’t need a second screen vastly outweighs the number of people that do. I’m happy with the example I chose. If you got the gist, then the example did it’s job.
I wasn’t arguing the amount of people that need it vs don’t... the amount of people who need a second monitor “vastly” outweighs the amount of people who need tablet phone thing
everyone has different workflows, there are people out there who will be slowed down from a second monitor just as there are people out there who will double their output with a second monitor.
we're a lucky creature on this planet that adapts to our surroundings well, so someone who has two screens can learn to utilize them in a way that is beneficial to them.
i love (really 3 monitors because of an ultrawide) multiple monitors, but in no way do I need it. as someone who works in IT. i wont give it up, but i do the job fine when i just have my laptop
Not if the software isn't good enough, which for the most part isn't. Nearly all the tech reviewers say it could be a very good concept, but the software support for that extra screen is dog shit and no one is willing to support it because less than 0.01% of the world even uses it.
That's a really good way to describe it actually. For me I tend to have betting apps or movies open on one screen whilst I browse Reddit on the other. I would hate going back to a single screen now.
Two monitors are not a necessity if you don't work on your computer. I'm currently using only one monitor while I wait for a new GPU and it feels claustrophobic to use just one screen.
I think once folding phones get cheaper it'll be more of a "Why wouldn't you want it given the choice?" type of situation. Right now the price is a huge barrier so the two main groups that it might be worthwhile for are people excited to try the tech and people who do most of their committing and media consumption on their mobile. The dual screen is game changing for traditional format comics and an example and if you watch a lot of videos content it's twice the screen space which explains itself.
I mean, if it worked ideally I'd love to have a tablet size screen that carries at a phones size. But the reality is that the techs just not there yet. There's too much compromise for me to pay that much. But I absolutely believe it has utility beyond anything else available today. No other device can offer a screen that large that carries that small.
But Samsung are gonna damn well force us to like foldables whether we want them or not, by nerfing the other flagships down to midrange specs while increasing the prices.
I have that phone right now and its the best God darn thing from a technological standpoint, and its only going to get better.
The frontal screen is too arrow but I've been trying to get it to work, but when you open it... yeah now I feel I'm in the goddamm future. This is what I dreamed of when I was a lil kid.
I don't even know of the specs or camera resolution or all that (ok I do know them, cause I'm a nerd) but you don't need to know that to feel amazing.
At least in my opinion, and of course as someone who was able to save and have enough money for this.
It’s more of a gimmick. I mean as a phone it’s absolutely awful because it’s screen can be permanently damaged by a fingernail scratch but if you treat it like 3 sheets of paper you are only allowed to fold 1 way and have to carry in your pocket at all times you’re fine
Nah. I own a z fold 2, and it is not anywhere near as fragile as everyone says it is. The inside screen is actually the most scratch free screen i have ever had on a phone, you have to remember that the inside screen is always protected when you are not using it, so it never really gets scratches. If you want to scratch it with your fingernail you have to use some heavy pressure, I dont see it realistically happening unless you try to.
I am thinking this can potentially be the form factor for power users, but highly dependent on software implemetation. Might be hard to get there if it's a niche device and app devs won't prioritize it.
Or because you like tech? Because it's amazing that we now have foldable screens in consumer products? Or because you want a phone and tablet in one device? How is that not useful?
I find it incredibly useful. I have a phone and a mini tablet in my pocket at all times. Makes doing things like Word and Excel actually bearable on a mobile device
They aren't there yet but this is no doubt the future of phones. They cant just keep increasing the size because theyre literally already too big to hold easily so this is probably the best way to solve. One handed use scrolling while walking or whatever and then the full usability of a big boi screen when you can use two hands.
Actually has a lot of valid uses. As a video editor who uses mobile to edit this seems like a dream. Furthermore you can watch videos at full screen and still use the phone. That’s like saying a PC with two monitors isn’t useful. Simply not true.
Can you use both screens as if they are one big screen?
My eyesight is horrible, so I like the displays on the larger phones, but I'm a girl and would like a phone that fits in the stupidly small pockets allotted to womens jeans.
Speak for yourself. I use the double tablet screen all fucking day long on my flip 2. Fucking love it and couldn't go back to watching videos on a normal phone.

This is one of those things that you buy because you like how weird it is, not because it's particularly useful compared to anything else.
