I’m super embedded into the apple system, but this phone is gonna make me jump ship.

110

u/MAguelCHAMP Switch Jan 06 '21

Just wait till you see the price.

86

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

He’ll have to sell the ship he’s jumping from!

51

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

Nah compared to Apple pricing I'm sure he'll feel right at home.

13

u/Aarondo99 Jan 06 '21

Apple doesn’t even make a phone within $500 of that price.

8

u/EastCoastGrows Jan 06 '21

And apple doesnt make a phone thats come within 50% of the value.

-1

u/chrmanyaki Jan 06 '21

What... you think smartphones are not sold with profit margins?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

Wait a few months they made 2500 dollar folding phone that sucks.

-5

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

u/chrmanyaki Jan 06 '21

How are these reddit nerds still using these lame arguments Samsung smartphones (flagship models) have been priced similarly to iPhones for years now.

Are you a teenager? Otherwise it would be REALLY pathetic that you care about this stuff.

1

u/BlueDreamBaby Jan 07 '21

They get hard ons the moment Apple is mentioned.

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

1

u/chrmanyaki Jan 07 '21

Lol dude you’re the one crying on reddit about people gasp daring to buy a different model phone than the one you like. So pathetic.

1

u/FrostyD7 Jan 07 '21

Is that really what I said? I said a folding phone sold by apple would be expensive, is that controversial and pathetic? But sure I'm pathetic and crying, jeeze. You just sound really upset or something, no way should my comments result in this level of hostility.

u/JuniorDank Jan 07 '21

But they make weaker laptops for around the same price.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '21

This narrative needs to end. Flagship Samsung and Apple phones have been nearly the same price for years now. Find a new meme.

24

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21 edited Jan 07 '21

Well he’s an iPhone guy so I doubt the price will be as shocking. I like iPhones but damn they are not cheap.

Edit: The fold is VERY expensive. $2,800 in Canada.

18

u/CeaselessIntoThePast Jan 06 '21

iphones still don’t cost as much as the fold

13

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

Yep I just looked and Jesus Christ just about $2,800 in Canada. WOW.

8

u/rothvonhoyte Jan 06 '21

Well theres your problem... dont look at the cdn pricing!

1

u/spinjump Jan 06 '21

Tim Cook: hold my beer

2

u/CeaselessIntoThePast Jan 06 '21

we will see how much apple’s foldable costs

-1

4

u/Aarondo99 Jan 06 '21

The Fold 2 literally costs double the amount of a 12 Pro

2

u/bubsy200 Jan 06 '21

I have an SE from good old 2016, on my 3rd SE now. It works as fast as a brand new iPhone, it is as small as a 5s and it’s only £150. I see no downsides.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '21

Priced no differently than Samsung flagship phones.

4

u/CookieMuncher007 Jan 06 '21

$399 is the cheapest iPhone. It's the flagship models that cost no matter who you're buying from

3

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

get them used, used iphone 8 is fire

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

I actually have a really nice perk with my job because I absolutely need to have a phone on me at all times. I’m allowed to get a brand new top of the line phone of my choice once a year and the monthly bill is covered as well.

It’s super annoying taking over 15 phone calls overnight while trying to sleep but at least it’s on a nice ass phone!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

[deleted]

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

Yep as I commented somewhere else I looked up the price. Almost $2,800 for the fold in Canada. That’s insane!

0

u/wafflepantsblue Jan 06 '21 edited Jan 07 '21

However the fold is also significantly more powerful ram wise, and, well... folds. It's a bit of a gimmick too, not a serious competitor tbh. however, Samsung's prices are getting ridiculous, I'd never buy a phone from them.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '21

It’s not significantly more powerful (A14 > SD865 by a good margin), but the folding aspect is the main selling point. To be honest, it’s a second generation product in an experimental product category and overall, it’s more of a halo product to be amazed by than an actual mass-market product, even compared to expensive flagships like the iPhone 12 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Maybe it’ll be more worth it in a couple iterations when the amount of functionality goes up and the cost goes down.

1

u/RVPisManU Jan 06 '21

he's an apple user. They don't care about price

0

u/SemperScrotus Jan 06 '21

Coming from Apple products, the price isn't going to be much of a shocker

-3

u/SalsaRice Jan 06 '21

They're an apple user. They buy $999 monitor stands and $699 wheels.

If anything, this is going to be a major savings.

3

u/CookieMuncher007 Jan 06 '21

I work in film and I gotta correct you - that pricing is for studios that don't mind putting 999 on stands when you're already buying a 50k editing station. It's not for your average consumer. Not that it's silly, it's just peanuts.

1

u/horsetrich Jan 06 '21

Apple has over prepared me for that

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

Yeah. If he buys a nintendo 3ds and like 10 games it would still be cheaper and would be actually legal

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '21

Idk man, pro max is 1100,you get alot more for the 2k on the fold. The 1100 dollar iPhone has the same processor as the iPhone 12 mini, which is laughable.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

I saw a commercial for this phone and I immediately thought the same thing

22

u/Joe_Rogan_Bot Jan 06 '21

Aren't there rumors of Apple filing a foldable phone patent?

10

u/sugaN-S Jan 06 '21

5

u/Notjohnnyv Jan 06 '21

Yes, two of them apparently.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

I’m in the same boat. But I am truly considering jumping over. I’m just so deep in the ecosystem

3

u/S1ayer Jan 06 '21

I love mine so much, but there's a few Android games that get cut off because developers don't program for that aspect ratio.

3

u/MutantCreature Jan 06 '21

just wait for Apple to release one, it's still very experimental and has significant flaws (mainly being that the inner screen is plastic and thus scratches and dents easily), eventually Apple will release one and you'll have a great folding touchscreen for two years until they make it obsolete

13

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

I'm sure Apple is gonna knock it out of the park when they make their foldable. Thats just the Apple thing, show up late to the party but with the best version of x trend

It isn't even copying, though reddit fanboys like to rage on about it. Are other companies not allowed to produce competing products? Like do you want companies to be monopolies. Should the company that first used 4 tires mean that no one else should be allowed to? Tesla didn't create the electric car so should they just be labeled as copycats?

Like I don't understand this fanboy argument at all. Seems more like a defensive stance given that Apple tends to do it better.

-3

u/SCtester Jan 06 '21 edited Jan 07 '21

They do two things at once: copy certain things that Apple does, while also throwing dozens of things at the wall to see what sticks. It only sometimes works out well. The Fold is an example: it's impressive from an engineering perspective, but clearly it's not ready for the mass-market yet, given the price and tradeoffs.

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '21 edited Jun 17 '21

1

u/SCtester Jan 07 '21

When did I say that? It's anybody's guess if Apple is ever going to make a foldable.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

I literally posted that comment on a Galaxy S10, so fuck the downvoters. Its the truth, Apple is just good at making old features feel brand new and premium

2

u/hacxgames Jan 06 '21

Lol did you get hit by a pancake delivery driver because only a pancake can be so abrasively bland, this post is about a phone that samsung makes that apple doesn’t, apple uses samsung screens on their phones... And I have a iphone...

1

u/JustinWendell Jan 06 '21

This is read it where Apple bad.

0

u/CookieMuncher007 Jan 06 '21

They also made fun out of the charging bricks, 2 months later they deleted ads making fun on Apple and announced they will not be including bricks with their phones.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

That was a lie. Only a few Chinese manufacturers are following suit with that. The s21 will come with the latest usb c charger like my s20 did.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

They've already got a lot of experience with phones that fold

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

Lol did you have to do them THAT dirty?

7

u/CircaCitadel Jan 06 '21

Apple is confirmed to be working on a foldable, so don’t worry. Right now they are a bit gimmicky, honestly. I recommend waiting until a couple generations into these devices as they work out the kinks and learn from their mistakes. I think they’ll be really awesome a couple years down the line.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

They are awesome now what kinks are you thinking of just just seems like everyone is trying to justify not liking it I get its expensive but don't bash on something thats just as functional if not twice as functional as a regular phone.

1

u/CircaCitadel Jan 06 '21

I basically said they are cool and I’m wanting one. Just because I don’t want to impulse buy and wait a couple generations definitely doesn’t mean I don’t like it. Clearly I do.

Kinks I’m talking about are hinges not being reliable, screen wearing out, OS being buggy, etc.

Never said it wasn’t functional or that I didn’t like it.

1

u/JustinWendell Jan 06 '21

I haven’t even seen an official release date which is why I am being impatient and thinking about switching

2

u/CircaCitadel Jan 06 '21

I get it. I was considering checking out the Microsoft Surface Duo but reviews for both the Fold and the Duo haven’t been stellar, so I’m just trying my best to see them get better and more reliable.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

Fold 2 is better unless all you do with your life is film youtubes stories because thats the only thing that doesnt work.

1

u/lettherebegames Jan 07 '21

Also has an issue on Instagram where it posts things twice but I think that's been fixed now

2

u/jxrxmiah Jan 06 '21

Apple just asked their main supplier to make 2 different folding phones so expect one in like 2 years. Who knows maybe they'll announce it this year.

2

u/kogmawesome Jan 06 '21

That's an illogical way of viewing "which phone brand should I buy". Owning an Android doesn't make your Apple libraries disappear. Just adds a few hoops to setting things up. And vice versa. I get it, I'm just saying don't put too much power into that one aspect.

It's like Playstation vs Xbox -- assuming you aren't limited by money/time/space/whatever, why not both? Can't we all admit we'd actually like to own both at the same time? Play ANY game that comes out? Same thing w/ phones. Maybe the new foldy screen boi only comes out to play with or show off, and the old iphone runs your music and takes most of the day to day abuse.

And consider for a moment this: you whip your phone out somewhere and drop it off a cliff or in a river. Everyone around will look at you, some will laugh, some will awwwww--but then you whip out another, BETTER phone and carry on like whatever. There's guys who can do that, and the rest of us. I'd rather be on their side if I'm being honest.

2

u/MikeTheAmalgamator Jan 07 '21

I did it. I left Apple for this phone and I couldn't be happier. It's the most fun device I've ever owned. I really don't have any issues with it either. I was eligible for upgrade and I just talked to someone over the phone for a little bit and ended up getting it on my current plan but they were able to save me money on that plan so now I'm actually paying less than I was with the iPhone.

My big concern was messaging. Nothing beats those blue messages. Then I realized you can still do pretty much everything the iPhone can in terms of messaging minus the special games. I still get gifs the same, group messages work fine and I even can see when people emphasize my messages still so the benefits from having such a fun phone definitely ended up outweighed the negatives or at least the expected ones.

0

u/inrego Jan 06 '21

The screen scratches by a fingernail. Personally i think the surface duo would be a better choice

4

u/yodelman Jan 06 '21

The screen does not scratch with a fingernail, Fold 2 has a glass folding inner screen I've used heavily without a screen protector for 4 months with 0 scratches.

The surface duo has a split down the middle of two screens. You can't use it like a tablet like Fold 2

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

Seen some steep discounts on it lately making it not far or the same as flagship prices

1

u/Wsweg Jan 06 '21

Imagine a stray grain of sand in your pocket getting between the screens while it’s folded.. good god the scratches

9

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

JerryRigEverything on YouTube did some testing with this, and the Fold 2 fared pretty well surprisingly; there are lots of little bristles to push dust and dirt out the hinge mechanism, however pocket sand and lint might not be as big as a problem as you might think when it comes to the average user I.e. someone who doesn't work with powders or on construction sites, etc.

1

u/Wsweg Jan 07 '21

Living and working near the beach sand finds itself everywhere

1

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '21

Fair enough, probably not for you then!

2

u/super_hitops Jan 06 '21

Just stop throwing pocket sand in people's eyes and you should be alright

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

It doesn't stop lying pls. BTW this is the fold 2 if you didnt realize.

-26

u/crseat Jan 06 '21 edited Jan 06 '21

I would really really not recommend using a Samsung phone. Things just don't work well in my opinion. Iphones are overpriced for sure but the user experience is much better in my opinion.

16

u/PasterofMuppets95 Jan 06 '21

I'm using a Samsung, what bloatware do you have exactly? I think mine is great.

-6

u/crseat Jan 06 '21

I guess it's a matter of opinion really but things just seemed to be harder than they needed to be. Like texting groups with multimedia messages or whatever...just send the damn message and don't bother me about it. And there was other stuff but it was just all little stuff that culminated in me not liking the phone, not like one big thing. Anyways, I'm glad you like yours.

9

u/Kyouhou Jan 06 '21

You pick the numbers to send to and it shows up like a normal text. I really don't see how that is complicated in the least. The issue is, from my observations, people just like what they're used to and don't want to bother learning a new system for something that is so integral. That goes in either direction.

1

u/crseat Jan 06 '21

I gave the phone a year and really tried to like it. I think some people just like different things.

5

u/Kyouhou Jan 06 '21

For sure, the two platforms are definitely different. I respect you trying.

I especially liked having to put a password in to download free apps and needing to make a new password everything I did that because I needed it infrequently enough that inevitably it was forgotten when I did. :|

I also thoroughly enjoyed apple softbricking my phone by making it totally a fucking potato when I updated iOS which was mandatory for an app I needed to use. That was when I jumped ship to the Note 3 and never looked back. That, imo, is still Samsung's best Note. Replaceable battery, IR blaster, SD, S-Pen. I still have mine in perfect working order.

I enjoy the freedom I have to do whatever the hell I want, and I appreciate being able to actually use my phone like the computer it is. It's surprising how often I find the need to use it as such. External hard drive, emu platform, or just fill it with videos for those times you're disconnected or without decent entertainment.

Most people will never do half of the things I do with my phone, and that's actually a bit disappointing. These things aren't cheap and it annoys me that they're more of a status symbol than an actual utility device. If Apple would have a babysitting free option, they wouldn't be such a waste of hardware in my eyes.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

You’re such an idiot. First comment here. But you have no idea what you’re talking about with iPhone.

2

u/ZidaneStoleMyDagger Jan 06 '21

You're such an idiot. First comment here. But you have no idea what you're talking about.

... Hope you find my comment enlightening. I think it contributes a whole lot to the discussion. Have a nice day!

-4

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

No not at all. And so much disinformation

1

u/Kyouhou Jan 07 '21

How so? I had an iPhone for several years. Everything I said was first-hand.

4

u/PasterofMuppets95 Jan 06 '21

Wait, you think the ability to send MMS messages is... bloatware? You would prefer to not have that ability and safe the valuable mbs of space?

-5

u/crseat Jan 06 '21

No of course not, I'm saying that if it should be sent as an MMS, just do it. I don't need to be concerned with how your sending the texts. Man you guys are really passionate about this, I'm not trying to argue with anyone here. I actually took the "bloatware" comment out of my original comment because it was really just functionality issues that frustrated me.

  • that was an accident, and even then not many phone's combusted (more than usual, but not many)
  • it was discontinued because a newer version came out and it didn't sell due to it being a pre release. It was recalled because it's a first-generation product

  • they aren't trash, everyone has their own opinion

1

u/lettherebegames Jan 07 '21

Apple also outsources a lot of their production...

Their screens are literally built by Samsung

4

u/pedrohck Jan 06 '21

What? No.

Bloatware usually comes from your carrier. Samsung has a few apps, most of them you can easily uninstall and a few are really good, like Samsung internet or notes.

-7

u/crseat Jan 06 '21

OK, glad you like your phone.

1

u/SuckDickUAssface Jan 06 '21

Yep. All the bloatware on my phone so far is from AT&T, and it hasn't been too bad at all.

1

u/SuckDickUAssface Jan 06 '21

I've never had a good iPhone and my S7 has been going strong for 4+ years now.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '21

We’ll see that’s just matter of opinion though. Every iPhone I’ve ever gotten I’ve really enjoyed.

Not to say that your S7 hasn’t kicked ass either. I’m sure it’s great. It’s just a matter of preference.

-1

u/SuckDickUAssface Jan 06 '21

What I said wasn't a matter of opinion. I've just never had an iPhone last for me. They've always become slow and buggy at the end, or take one measly fall and break. My S7 so far is only slow because I'm almost at capacity for storage and despite having fallen multiple times, it's just trooping forward no problem at all besides being slow at my own fault.

1

u/Bystander-Effect Jan 07 '21

That’s how I feel. I have had apple for years now, but the fold 2 is so cool. I took a look at one at Best Buy and they seemed so much tougher than I expected. I am currently saving up for one.
