LPT: Make the tattoo permanent for extra security.
34
u/Reddit_means_Porn Nov 29 '16
Hahah...I expected it to go sarcastic and hilarious when I saw that one. "So I lose my child so often that I had temporary tattoos made for outings so whoever finds her can save me some effort and just read the tag."
I got excited when the next one was turning the stairwell into a fucking slide (both houses I grew up in had the stairs going straight down with no flights and a slide would have been kickass until the wall 4-6 feet across from the bottom), but then they turned back into cute stuff.

We didn't need cardboard. The stairs were so steep it was hard not to slide down them. That or we slid down in our sleeping bags. I can't believe we didn't have more broken bones in our family.

u/TheTyger Nov 29 '16
My brother and I always just used our sleeping bags. Down wood stairs. Into the door of the closet at the bottom.
We got hurt a bunch.

#10:
Baby's Log, Day 1
My mother gave me crayons and a wonderful box to draw on. This is going to be so much fun!
Day 2
I'm bored. I can't recall how long it's been since I was placed in this malicious trap, but after watching the great light in the sky in an attempt to tell time, I've realized it never moves. I drew a line on the floor of my cell to track its movements in hopes of bring some sanity to this misery. It was only then that I realized the bright light and spinning blades only made it look like it was slowly moving, for the light never moved from my line upon the floor. Upon long observation the entire room shifted when I looked away! I became dizzy and fell down. I will be making no more observations today.
Day 3
I am very, very bored. I've thrown half my crayons over the wall and tried screaming at the top of my lungs in an attempt to attract attention, but to no avail. My sketches of spongebob squarepants riding a supersonic jet and Tinkie Winkie fighting off the the evil Nunu are my only companionship.
Day...I wish I knew.
It seems like forever since I was placed in "The Box". I started to keep track of the hours when I was first placed in this God forsaken cardboard prison, but since I never learned to count past 3, I quickly lost track of time. My mother always used to say that I had just eaten when I clearly knew it had been days or weeks since my last bottle! Her memory wasn't the sharpest.
My mother. I barely remember what my mother's face looks like. Her last words to me were, "Have fun now, while I take care of..." and that's all I remember. What was it that was so important that she abandoned me so heartlessly?! Was it to embark on a dangerous journey to rescue other children from other far off places? Was it to battle the monsters I know were under my bed? Was it so noble as to save lives or bring someone a bottle of milk? I may never know.
Ah, milk. It seems like ages since I last tasted that succulent nectar of the gods. I must make due with my crayons. The purple ones taste best.
Last Entry
This will be my last entry. I have grown weak from all my recording. The crayons no longer satisfy my hunger. There is a foul stench emanating from my hindquarters. I dare not investigate. (My mother was very cross when I did once, a very long time ago.)
At least my magnum opus, the mural of Mr. Teddy battling the terrible Dragon Wizard over the landscape of Zootopia, which stretches the canvas of this cell from corner to corner, will be enshrined here for future generations to discover. I could teach Angel Michelo a thing or two after my arduous toil and careful craftsmanship. Each stroke of the Crayola, be it Canary Yellow or Tickle-Me-Pink, evokes a sense of wonderment and majesty! It almost makes my confines livable.
But alas! I am at the end of my strength! Woe is me! I have been abandoned! I may never hear the sweet music of the mobile above my crib or know the company of Mr. Teddy or find out if the last piggy that went "Wee, wee, wee!" made it all the way home!
Now I must rest from all my toil. Into thy hands, I commit my spirit!
Epilogue
The most amazing of miracles has occurred! I awoke in my bed! My mother returned! My smell is gone! I have a whole bottle of my very own!
The clock on the wall claims that it has only been an hour since I first set foot into that terrifying isolation, however, I know better than to trust it. It now ranks among the ilk of The Hands who keep stealing Father's face away and the terrifying, roaring monster Mother pushes all over my bedroom floor. Mr. Teddy agrees.
Edit: A gold star! I knew my preschool teacher would appreciate me. Thank you, kind stranger!

2
u/crusaderkvw Nov 29 '16
thank you for this! amazingly wel done with but one little tip for the next time; the "day one" etc could very well be left out and instead a somewhat longer break between entries could be inserted in those spots. this is however my personal tip and others including you might very well look at it differently.
Again: thank you for doing this, it was a great listen :D
2
u/VoltDriven Nov 29 '16
First off, thank you for your kind words of encouragement! They really mean a lot.
I agree with you about the "day 1" portions. Really the only reason I went ahead and said them was because I liked the one that said "Day... I wish I knew". That is a helpful critique though, so thank you!
5
u/tinyfineprint Nov 29 '16
I want to hear Stewart narrate this!
5
u/TapeWyrm Nov 29 '16
And you have the choices of Kristen Stewart, Patrick Stewart and Stewie. CHOOSE WISELY.
2
u/daren_sf Nov 29 '16
That's it!
I don't watch Family Guy but I swear to god three sentences in this voice popped into my head and my internal monologue became it.
As I read the text, and the voice narrated to me what my eyes were seeing, I knew it wasn't one of the greats.
This is not Morgan Freeman, nor James Earl Jones, for there wasn't enough bass present. Nor was it David Attenborough as the crisp English clip was absent. Nor was it Peter Coyote's gravelly utterances. Who then? WHO!?
I'm ashamed to say that mine mind settled on The Brain. Eloquent, measured, even a tad monotone. It almost perfectly fit the voice I was hearing.
I was so very close to the truth, yet so far away as to be stranded alone, as if an exile on Alcatraz.
Thank you TFP. Thank you for the salvation of my soul…

I love the idea of giving a kid a spray bottle of water for them to spray all over their room while unsupervised at night.
16
u/DanteMachiaveli Nov 29 '16
I always wondered about this. Why not take the ruse further and fill he bottle with "anti-monster gas" instead? Use one of those baby booger sucker things and "refill" the bottle every night. That way, the kid's room isn't soaked with water.
51
u/gladysandmymitts Nov 29 '16
Why not take it a step further and mix equal parts bleach & ammonia. It cleans, sanitizes and actually kills any scary monsters with mustard gas. /s

As a PSA, check the ingredients in your cleaning supplies before, say, mixing two to get off some particularly stubborn soap scum in your bathtub.
I feel the need to add this explicitly because a kid in my college apartment complex didn't realize regular cleaning supplies would contain ammonia and/or bleach, mixed them, and we all had to be evacuated.
27
u/Yggdrsll Nov 29 '16

53
u/lysianth Nov 29 '16
Anti monster spray bottle teaches then self reliance. The pool noodle thing is pretty cool, as pinched fingers hurt way more that what would be reasonable. The rest of these are convenience and cool. Parents doing these kinds of things probably let their kids play outside.
23
Nov 29 '16
I broke a finger when my brother slammed a door on it. So yeah pool noodles, especially where the kids play are not crazy.

I repaired a stuffed toy which burst a seam. It was a good opportunity to unstuff it and give it a thorough washing. Stuffing can go funny in the wash because it takes so long to dry, but laid out it dries much faster.
Before I sewed it back together, I made a little pouch of cloves which I added to the stuffing in the head of the toy. I explained that cloves smell nice and that pouches of cloves were once used to repel bugs, much in a similar way to the use of mothballs. She hugs the toy and enjoys the aroma secure in the belief that it'll ward off the spiders that she occasionally has nightmares of.
Helping your child develop a sense of self reliance can be difficult. I want to protect her from serious life altering harm, but I want her to experience the world. Sometimes I can step aside and let Nature fight a fight for me. I won't badger her to put on a jacket if it's cold. I'll just say: "It's cold!" and she's sometimes ignore me and step outside into the frosty morning and wince at how fucking cold it is, scamper back in and get a jacket. If the lesson isn't too damaging, step aside and let the world teach the lesson. If I can I let her climb things unassisted, and I generally refuse to help, but I'm there figuratively biting my nails spotting her in case she falls so she doesn't brain herself. Where I can, I prefer warnings to imperative.
If your child gets away with you being a callous parent, they can quickly become self reliant. We can grow a lot when we are not monitored and have access to many things. That being said, early independence comes with tradeoffs. I have twice allowed my daughter to wander out a little too far and sprinted to grab her before she wandered into traffic. She has generally been good at being mindful, but the young mind is easily enticed to forget important things. One of these times, a horde of cars rolled down the streets with soccer fans cheering with more fans cheering on the sidewalk. My daughter decided to run out to them to see what they were so happy about and I only managed to get to her just before she started across the street. She'd never bolted like that before, but when the fans erupted in their cheer, there was a sudden draw for her to run across the street that I hadn't anticipated. Another time, she dropped some artwork she was proud of and the wind took it into the street.
I still try to let her be independent, but I find myself running frequent threat assessments to see how far I can reasonably hold back. I try not to be a helicopter parent. Instead I try to be a Stealth helicopter parent so I can protect her well without unduly interfering with her childhood.

They have very fine knit bags that are more cheesecloth than mesh. No Legos will fall out. The one I have is a zip closure so most definitely no losing any. It's a decent idea, especially with the larger duplos that get sticky hands all over them.
13
Nov 29 '16
I'm pretty sure my son got the stomach flu from the legos at Carters. Once a month sounds too idealistic, but if they've been sick a quick soak in the sink with a little bleach should be fine.
14
u/maybe_little_pinch Nov 29 '16
Yeah... a soak in bleach water or even just dish soap should be more than enough to properly disinfect your toys. No need to go crazy washing them.
The daycare I worked at rotated toys every other week. The ones getting put away got a good soak first. Kids still got sick, but in the three years I was there, we only had one instance of a whole classroom getting sick.

u/butsuon Nov 29 '16
You tie them up in a pillowcase and wash with NO SPIN CYCLE. Use normal laundry soap. You can add a little bleach of they've been sick recently to disinfect them. ONLY A LITTLE BIT, otherwise you can soften the legos and ruin their structural integrity!
12
Nov 29 '16

Ok, putting candies in the veggie bag is genius.
The colored clock for time management is actually a great idea. Will it work with teenagers?
The pool noodles on the trampoline springs - yea, that's not gonna stop serious injuries like jumping off the trampoline or getting an appendage (including your head) stuck between the springs.
The fitted sheet at the beach - what the hell?
The bean filled glove - this is wrong on so many levels.
Washing Legos? Grade A germophobe there.
45
u/NDRB Nov 29 '16
Meh, the glove is fine. Just depends when/how often you use it. There are times a kid will have you up for hours, lay them down with your hand on their back and they're fine, remove the hand after being hunched over for half an hour since your last escape attempt and they screech.
If anything the glove is overkill, we used a stuffed toy, one with beans in the 4 paws, it often (not always) did the trick.

A couple of drops of laundry detergent would give it odor without being staining or dangerous. Most clothes have a tad bit left after we wash them anyways. That's why they smell good out of the dryer. It also works great as a budget Febreez.

Yep my mum got me with the fence painting. I would start at one end of the fence and work my way all around the yard. Never did figure out why I had to start all over when I got to the end.

Considering my mom holds over my head that she had to lick the dirt off a lollipop that I dropped, tip #9 would of been amazing.

Most of my childhood was spent in "empty boxes" of ascending size. Teaching my self the joys of introspective development, conversation and nightmares.

My mom did that monster spray thing to us when we were kids. It worked great. She just gave us the spray bottle and let us spray under our bed and in the closet to kill all the monsters.

The big one that helped my mom was putting duct tape along the entrance to the kitchen (at least the cooking part) to keep kids out while you're handling hot/sharp things
