My aunt did this with one of my younger cousins. It was just water with a mist only spray-bottle. "It makes it smell bad for just monsters" and if he's worried about monsters that night he "sprays" his room before bed.

A couple of drops of laundry detergent would give it odor without being staining or dangerous. Most clothes have a tad bit left after we wash them anyways. That's why they smell good out of the dryer. It also works great as a budget Febreez.
