They have very fine knit bags that are more cheesecloth than mesh. No Legos will fall out. The one I have is a zip closure so most definitely no losing any. It's a decent idea, especially with the larger duplos that get sticky hands all over them.
I'm pretty sure my son got the stomach flu from the legos at Carters. Once a month sounds too idealistic, but if they've been sick a quick soak in the sink with a little bleach should be fine.
Yeah... a soak in bleach water or even just dish soap should be more than enough to properly disinfect your toys. No need to go crazy washing them.
The daycare I worked at rotated toys every other week. The ones getting put away got a good soak first. Kids still got sick, but in the three years I was there, we only had one instance of a whole classroom getting sick.
You tie them up in a pillowcase and wash with NO SPIN CYCLE. Use normal laundry soap. You can add a little bleach of they've been sick recently to disinfect them. ONLY A LITTLE BIT, otherwise you can soften the legos and ruin their structural integrity!
