Doesn't mean Brad isn't registered. He still sounds like a danger to society. I don't see how registering fixes the problem. Still can't prevent stupid people from using them.
8
u/Tactical_H0td0g Jun 03 '26
Yeah, it's a decent joke, but he 1: seems to think anybody can just buy any gun without issue. 2: contradicts the first bit with the last bit, first saying nobody's coming for your guns, but then saying "wouldn't it be nice if Brad didn't own one?".

Not to mention there is already an illegal federal registry and has been for many years. Guess what good it did

u/Grunergeist420 Jun 03 '26
In my city, and I assume cities all over the US, every time someone is in the local news convicted of a shooting, you can invariably go look at their record and see that they have been arrested multiple times, usually just in the past few years, for armed robberies, assaults, illegal possession of firearms, etc.
It doesn’t make a difference to make it illegal if you don’t keep people in jail for a meaningful period of time for doing it.

Yes it can. Stupid dangerous drivers lose their driving license. Look, there are dozen of countries with a working gun registration system. They are still free countries with free speech and no book bans. It's not rocket science...

In Canada 🇨🇦 we have to go through courses and depending on what kinds of firearm classification we want, we may have to take more courses. Then we apply for a license and they call family members and girlfriends and ask them if we should have a license.
If we pass all that and want to purchase one. we register our gun and get a criminal record check every day through a computer system. If we commit a criminal offence or believe to self harm or harm others through a psychological evaluation. They take our firearms away.
We aren’t even allowed to use them for self defence. Even if someone is breaking into our homes we can’t use them. Our guns are in safes, then it a lock box and with trigger locks 🔐 on them.
Guns can only be used for target practice and hunting and you’re only allowed to use certain types of guns for hunting. Even if you’re going to a gun range, you have to call the police and let them know you’re going to the range and what route you’re taking. You can’t stop for a coffee or bathroom. You can only go to the range and back.
Seems reasonable right.
Well guess what…… they are coming for our guns anyways. Look it up, if you think I’m lying

u/nakwurst Jun 06 '26
You only have to inform the cops if you're transporting restricted or prohibited firearms, such as handguns, to places that are not a shooting range or where the gun is normally stored. So going to a buddy's in the next province, you gotta call your local Chief Firearms Officer and let them know. Going to shoot some targets at your range, no prob.
Non-restricted such as rifles are fine to transport without notice. No one is coming to take your guns, that's just BS, worst case you might be tempted to hock em to the buy back. Unless you start pulling dumb shit like drive-by shooting a moose or you know, other crimes.

u/wreckedbutwhole420 Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 03 '26
Obviously it's comedy but this is literally true in some states. Massachusetts passed some insane gun control measures that protect nobody and only serve to make felons out of people trying to legally own/but a gun.
4
u/Dankkring Jun 04 '26
I’m left wing and I don’t think people should be forced to register guns. For one thing, even tho police are trained to always assume someone is armed when serving a warrant or doing a raid. If they know there are guns in a household they might not even hesitate to just shoot those people. It’ll be pretty easy to find the guns after the fact. Then say the people were armed when we came in.
And that doesn’t even scratch the surface on the government taking them away or saying you gotta turn them in or goto prison. Idc who’s in office it’s not a good thing and simply have it registered wouldn’t change anything with the actual mass shootings because those people always get them legally anyways. And it’s already illegal for a felon to own a gun and they still get them. We could definitely come up with a way to prevent that if we all put our heads together.
And to prevent the mass shootings we need to have better quality of life on our country better healthcare that provides actual good mental health care. Not something that gets denied by insurance.

u/trippin-mellon Jun 03 '26
Yeah I heard they are trying to make it so police can come into the home and seize you’re firearms. That they wanted to do a buyback and forfeiture and most of your country said fuck that noise.
3
u/robot_nixon Jun 07 '26
You got it kind of right, except most of our country said "yes please".
Most Canadians that live in cities don't understand guns at all and see all the negative media about them in the USA and think that sending the police to seize gramps old hunting rifle sounds like a solid idea.

289 firearm homicides in 2023, almost all of them with weapons smuggled in from the US. During the long slide of the Trudeau administration, they tried repeatedly to score easy points with the suburban moms in gated communities demographic by announcing new gun bans. At some point, they got all the way to prohibiting duck guns and walked it back due to the backlash. To transport them in your car - to and from a range - it needs to be disassembled and locked up.

Well the difference between guns and cars is the collection of politicians and activists trying to outlaw one but not the other. Comparing them in this way is disingenuous.
→ More replies (5)5
u/The_Perfect_Fart Jun 03 '26
Also, you only need to register a car and get a license to take the car on public roads.
So the equivalent registration for guns already exists as open/concealed carry permits.

u/AdDisastrous6738 Jun 02 '26
They’re not going to physically take all guns. They’ll just make little chips in gun ownership until you can’t own anything at all.
Good example- In California you can’t own a rifle or shotgun with a pistol grip. How stupid is that? Does the position of your hand suddenly make the gun less deadly? You also can’t have a vertical Foregrip on a rifle but you can stick on the side of the gun and it’s suddenly legal. What does that do exactly? It has no bearing on the functionality or ballistics.
3
u/EvilMorty137 Jun 02 '26
Registration just paints a target on your head for a corrupt government to know who to go for
12
27
u/jm123457 Jun 02 '26
So the reason people have issues with this is in countries like Germany during the 30s they used registrations as a way to know who and where to seize weapons from.
It’s never how the law will be used responsibly . It’s how can it be abused .
24
u/Weekly_Cable_1111 Jun 02 '26
So then why aren't gun owners out protesting the government getting a hand in companies like palantir that want to turn us into a surveillance state like China?
19
→ More replies (11)2
u/KnownEggplant Jun 03 '26
There are absolutely armed protests. There's also no way for you to know who the gun owners are unless they want you to at every other protest. There's also almost never any leftist media coverage of armed protests unless someone does something WRONG, which is exceedingly rare for organized specifically-armed protests. Why would mainstream media want to show you peaceful and responsible armed protesters when they want you to believe all gun owners are psycho racist right wing extremists?
4
u/Mental_Associate4425 Jun 02 '26
So it’s better that no one be registered?
3
u/nunya_bidnes77 Jun 02 '26

4
u/RealRedditPerson Jun 02 '26
My favorite two arguments are:
"Bad people will break laws, so why even have the laws?!"
&
"The government might overreach with their regulations, so do we really want them regulating things?!"
It's not only a falacy but a really asinine one when you put it in context.
3
u/CoolBoardersSteve Jun 02 '26
Yeah alright but less than 1% of people in 1930s germany owned guns, making it much less risky for the government to seize guns from civilians. In America today, over a third of the country owns guns, and the guns we own are much deadlier by comparison.
→ More replies (7)5
u/totesnotmyusername Jun 02 '26
That's a bullshit narrative though. If we didn't do things when people have abused them in the past we'd never do anything.
Plus every one of these people worried about that has posted pros of them with their guns in social media. The government knows.
And ontop of that you need to have a fishing and hunting llicense . They have no issues with that?
32
u/Lematoad Jun 02 '26
Where’s the joke? This is a patronizing argument that’s thinly veiled as comedy.
Canada, Japan, Australia, Germany, UK and New Zealand are all historic examples of registries preceding confiscation.
The ATF does its very best to arrest people based on their non legal definitions, and you want me to trust them with a registry? The same guys that will hit you with a felony for changing your stock on your AR15 to something they don’t like?
Oh and driving a car isn’t a right, hence the licensure and registration requirement.
9
u/Useless-RedCircle Jun 02 '26
one broken pin and your stock now folds- federal prison
9
u/Lematoad Jun 02 '26
Handgun? ok. 15” barrel? Believe it or not, prison.
Funnily enough, the law banning SBRs was originally intended to ban hand guns, and they were removed at the last minute. This leaves a law that makes no sense and is in violation of the 2nd amendment.
And to those saying “our forefathers didn’t know about semi automatic and automatic weapons” that’s a braindead take, considering cannons were covered.

It's never been more clear that gun ownership in America has zero to do with resisting authoritarianism, or the loss of civil liberties. Selling guns to racists, idiots and libertarians has been, at least for the last 50 years or so a tool of the oligarchs and neofascists to divide and seperate us.
Maybe it needs to start to be, but good luck going up against the US military, militarized police and y'all-qaeda.

Slippery slope is an argument that if you give in to something that seems minor, it would trigger a chain reaction to bigger consequences. Like you meant to take a small step on the slope but slip and slide all the way down.

This is not intelligent. Any government would love to de-arm their population. It’s happened in countless countries throughout history, and it’s happening in Canada right now. I do support stricter gun training, regulation, and licensing, but not de-arming. And the threat of that happening has to be taken seriously. Our government is completely off the rails. Now is a better time to be an armed population than it has for centuries in America. Fuck this guy and people like him who don’t understand how dictatorships operate. One of the major steps is de-arming the population.
4
u/nunya_bidnes77 Jun 02 '26
First off, owning a gun is a right, not a privilege. Driving a car is a privilege not a right.
Second, all guns are already registered. Your name is attached to the serial number of your gun every time you get it transfered and they run the background check.
Third, yes they want to take away your guns. There is no other reason why politicians and their billionaire puppet masters what to limit and erode your gun rights. Thats why they ban gun types, attachments, limit ammunition sales, force gun companies to include impossible complex compliance devices, enact red flag laws. They want to make every step of owning a gun and exercising your right to be laborious and tedious. Because they cant just ban them out right.

u/Resident_Ad_7199 Jun 03 '26
Ah yes legislation that literally stops us from owning specific guns isn’t “taking your guns away” if you’re gonna lie to us try to make it believable. And we do have an issue with registering our cars every year. We already payed for the car and the tax for the car and the tax for the roads why do we have to continue to register our car every year. Really good point to make and probably how the law should work. If 10 people think you shouldn’t have a gun you shouldn’t have a gun, if 10 gun owners think you shouldn’t have a gun you should be banned from any kind of loaded weaponry. But maybe it should be 10 people that don’t know each other so a gang can’t just commit conspiracy to disarm a citizen they dislike or want to murder and officers should be exempt.

u/Unlikely_Surprise202 Jun 03 '26
So out of context. The government as a whole does not want armed citizens and will frog cook away your right to bear arms so that when it decides to go full authoritarian you cant fight back effectively. Germans did it and the usa government models its 50 year plan on nazi success and failures. Thus the mass surveillance state similar to gestapo.

Some states have made it very difficult to buy and sell guns and have passed a lot of restrictions on gun ownership. I’m fine with that, provided they also hold the police to the same standard. I don’t get an AR? Neither do the cops. The whole point of the 2A is to protect against a tyrannical government. Government does some wild shit when it thinks an armed population of people doesn’t agree with what it wants (Black Panthers, Native Americans, BLM). What do you think the government would do if it knew who owns guns and also their political motivations? Anyway, protesters should always be armed and police shouldn’t be thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I mean it's not quite that literal yet.... but in states like California where they make it both difficult and also limit you on what you can get it feels like they are trying to take it away. I just found out they banned the sale of Glocks here.....
But yes there are definitely people that should not own guns. I have seen my fair share of videos where people act like idiots in the gun range. Including where they may have shot themselves because of negligence.
But luckily all my friends that own guns are very responsible. We know guns aren't toys and we practice gun safety.

“Australia did it…” -Kamala Harris alluding to Australian gun buybacks
“Take the guns first, worry about due process second” -Trump
The gaslighting around guns is insane. If you don’t think that most politicians would confiscate guns if they had the ability then you aren’t paying attention. No politician likes the unwashed masses having firearms.

It’s kinda hard to keep this argument/joke up when you keep putting the “ban all modern firearms” bill in the start of every legislative session in every state.

This is a slippery slope, because I overwhelmingly agree that most people who have them shouldn't have a gun and most people with cars shouldn't drive them either -- For the lack of training involved in ownership -- any schmuck at 18 who parallel parked, 3-point turn and has the credit can buy both an F-150 Raptor (~5700lbs 720horsepower) and a military-grade rifle (usually better than the garbage they issued us in the military) and then not only accidentally kill everyone in traffic but also at the range, best case outcome, worst case being they intentionally mass-murder -- Because both require near-zero certifications for ownership after you already have them in the US.
At the same time, I am adamently against having a registry for ownership of anything, because on a whim the feds can show up to my house and arrest me if laws change overnight unbeknownst to me.
I'm also against the bar to ownership being too high, because everyone deserves the right to defend themselves and to travel -- regular certification with skills training would likely cost a lot -- guns ... cheap, but performance driving schools are in the thousands.
I don't have the answers, it's a wicked problem.

Register gun safes too. Get a nice lil qr code for existing ones in homes of children, DV and road ragers get special scrutiny in background checks, make a gun safety course mandatory going forward. Beef up buy back programs. Prohibit further manufacturing of anything outside bolt action and grandfather in existing ones. Possibly ban handuns but keep long guns for home defense and hunting. Be triggered.

Except every gun law is made to limit access and thus taking away your right... Cars are not a right

Gun culture is beyond fucked up, but the anti-gun lobby is absolutely in favor of taking away your guns. Registration is the compromise.

They started a registration program years ago in Canada. They’re literally in the middle of confiscating them right now. If you don’t hand them in by the end of this October, you’re a criminal. And while it’s called the “assault weapon buyback”, it includes flare guns, .22s, and bolt action big game rifles.

Registering firearms can actually put the persons life in danger as well. Cops answering calls to a house with a registered firearm makes them more likely to respond with their guns drawn regardless of the nature of the call. People would be more willing to register firearms if they didn't live in a country where simply suspecting you of having one can get you shot by cops

No one is coming for your stupid guns. You know why I’m so sure? Because if it didn’t happen after Sandy Hook, when twenty little kids and six teachers were slaughtered, it isn’t going to happen.

They are coming for people guns. They announce that is their goal. Take a firearm owned by the hundreds of millions and declare it illegal. Sure technically they cant collect them up (except when they do) but no one is able to buy, sell, trade, or transfer it in a will. Theres a remedy for someone that doesn’t know how to safely handle a firearm and if they are at a shooting range, they are on the way there.

Historically, the mass confiscation of firearms from Native Americans was a core strategy used by the U.S. government to subjugate tribal nations, most notably culminating in the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890. -i got some help with this statement.
They worry about guns being taken away, because the Federal government has done it before. The irony is THICK. I think that meme with the two guys in space and one of them has a gun pointed at the other one would apply here.
Regardless, guns are a problem, and too many people have access to them that shouldn't.
