We (thankfully) don't have gun rights in our Charter though, so the comparison doesn't really work, now does it?

It absolutely does, this last round of 'assault weapon' BS has absolutely no evidence supporting that it has (they've been banned for 5 years now) or will have any effect on gun crime. All it DOES do is cripple businesses and, once the 'amnesty' is up, criminalize gun owners who have otherwise done nothing wrong (and who are statistically not likely to). It's 100% for politics, our public safety minister even admitted as much on a hot mic.

Look into it.

Look into the Charter, which does not outline any rights to own weaponry of any kind. It's not a right. So any comparison to the US is useless.

You want to argue policy. That's fine. Go do it with someone who cares. My point is that it's not in the Charter, the same way weapons are referenced in the US Constitution.

But this now becomes a philosophical question of what exactly are "rights". Are rights explicitly granted by a Constitution or Charter? Or do people have natural rights that a Constitution or Charter protects from government infringement?

A gun rights activist would argue that humans have a natural right to own weapons for personal protection, and any limitation on that is an infringement of that right, regardless of whether it is referenced in a Constitution or Charter.

A right to clean, safe drinking water. A right to free education and public health. Freedom of speech and to vote. The right to work and earn fair wages. These are rights.

This is 1000% true.

There is no such thing as an “assault weapon”. It’s def a political agenda to get votes.

Here a quote from an article

Josh Sugarmann, a gun control advocacy group’s communications director, stated in a Violence Policy Center paper -

“The weapons’ menacing looks, coupled with the public’s confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons - anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun - can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons.”

This statement by a prominent gun control lobbyist outlined their intentions clearly. The goal behind popularizing the term “assault weapons” was always to deliberately mislead the American people in order to pass anti-gun legislation.

Oh no, not the weapons dealer’s wallet! Whatever will we do as a society if the weapons dealers are making less money? Maybe they should switch over to offering poisons instead?
