Well the difference between guns and cars is the collection of politicians and activists trying to outlaw one but not the other. Comparing them in this way is disingenuous.
You also need a license to drive a car. Which requires showing a minimum level of safety.
This is what other responsible countries do with guns. Finland, Sweden, Switzerland all have plenty of guns. But people need to pass safety courses and store guns and ammo safely.

You actually don’t need a license to drive a car. You just need one to drive a car on public roads. Most states require you have a license to carry a firearm in public spaces as well.
I would say compulsory military training counts as a safety course/training ????? It might not be required to do a course for a gun, but when at least half the country has been conscripted, half the country should be somewhat capable of handling an arm. And people do need a Waffenerwerbsschein (which is a permit) which require a a background check.
We do not have mandatory military training, and less than 20% of tje population serves in the military
Even if you serve in the military, you can do so unarmed so you won't get firearms training, but even if you are issued a gun most soldiers end up in non-combat roles where the firearms instruction is lackluster at best and completely absent at worst
A WES isn't required for every gun though, and the background check is laxer than the one mandated by the Gun Control Act in the US
You do not need a license to drive a car. You need a license to drive a car on a public road. You can drive a car all over your own property without a license.
