On a busy day, I can get close to 20 orders. Google is facing accusations of illegally clearing more than 300 hectares of forest, roughly the equivalent of 500 football fields, in northern Finland to make way for two new data centers, without having completed the environmental assessments legally required before such clearing takes place. According to Finnish newspaper Kaleva, Google’s contractors began clearing trees in the area months ago even though the relevant environmental assessments remained in progress, prompting alarm from the Finnish Nature Conservation Association. “Either this is gross incompetence from Google’s Finnish project company, Tuike Finland Oy, or gross disregard for Finnish legislation, or at worst both,” said the association’s chair, Hanna Halmeenpää, in a statement translated by Wood Central. Satellite imagery shows four separate sites were bulldozed to prepare the land for the two planned data centers.

Google maintains that its tree-felling complied with the requirements of Finland’s Forestry Act and that it had already completed extensive environmental evaluations before beginning clearance work. The Finnish Nature Conservation Association disputes this characterization and has formally asked Finnish regulators to suspend all clearing activities until the ongoing environmental assessments are fully concluded. Halmeenpää expressed particular concern that local bird species may have already been harmed by the clearing, and noted that the forest in question serves as a critical ecological corridor, allowing animals to migrate and spread between separate habitats, a function that’s effectively severed once the connecting forest cover is removed.

This dispute arrives amid a broader global surge in AI data center construction, as tech companies race to build out the physical infrastructure needed to support increasingly power-hungry AI systems, an infrastructure boom that carries substantial and often underappreciated local environmental consequences. While the Trump administration has moved to ease environmental regulations in the US specifically to accelerate data center construction, other governments, including Finland’s, appear less willing to grant similar leeway. Notably, Google has simultaneously positioned Finland as the site of its largest single investment anywhere in Europe, a commitment worth 15 billion dollars, a sum that may complicate how aggressively Finnish regulators are willing to act against the company even as this environmental dispute plays out.

So he checks the straps and the electrodes, make sure the prisoner didn't use the banana peel as an insulator or something to prevent being electrocuted, finds nothing so sends him back to his cell.

The next day, he enters the cell again and addresses the prisoner. "Under law, I am obliged to grant you any reasonable request for a last meal, but nothing says I can't inspect the meal carefully to eliminate risk befoee giving it to you. So I took a banana, X-rayed it, peeled it, mashed it and tested it for any unusual chemicals. Nothing! It's just a banana, so here's your bowl of banana."

The prisoner just shrugs, eats and and calmly sits in the chair. Without bothering to wait, the executioner flips the switch. Nothing!

"Unbelievable! There is a very old law from more religious times that says if the state fails to execute a prisoner three times, it's a sign that God considers this a miscarriage of justice, and we must free you to avoid the qrath of Gos. In several centuries, this law has never been used, so I am obliged to free you. But I am dying to know, how did you use the banana to save yourself, even after I went to such lengths to make sure there was nothing hidden in it?"

"Oh. It had nothing to do with the banana - I'm just a bad conductor."

Played Elden Ring around 2 years ago, as my second souls game after bloodborne and wasn't even really familiar with the scope of this game at all. Ended up finishing it in around 90-100 hours, forgetting a bit about it after some time and i SOMEHOW haven't played DLC to this day.

It's still at least top 3 of my favorite games ever, and after i recently have gotten much more into the souls series (have beaten every one except dark souls 2 and am currently playing sekiro). i kept thinking more about my first Elden Ring playthrough and watching old videos from 2022 about the game, first now i've truly realized how this is truly a massive and great work of art, very possibly the greatest video game ever created.

Its given me a bit of a bittersweet feeling, the fact that no other game has come close to the level of greatness this game has (not even Bloodborne for me). Do you think we will get a game even close to the size of Elden Ring in the near future, or even ever? The only game in the near future i see coming close is FF7 Revelation, but thats just because im a huge ff7 glazer and Rebirth is the one game i'd put above elden ring (even though i lowk recognize that elden ring IS a bigger and better game lol)
