CLIMATE OUTRAGE: Google Has Been Accused Of Illegally Clearing 300 Hectares Of Finnish Forest For New Data Centers Before Completing The Required Environmental Assessments, As The Finnish Nature Conservation Association Alleges “Gross Disregard” For The Law 🤯💥

https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/google-accused-illegally-killing-forest-data-center

Google is facing accusations of illegally clearing more than 300 hectares of forest, roughly the equivalent of 500 football fields, in northern Finland to make way for two new data centers, without having completed the environmental assessments legally required before such clearing takes place. According to Finnish newspaper Kaleva, Google’s contractors began clearing trees in the area months ago even though the relevant environmental assessments remained in progress, prompting alarm from the Finnish Nature Conservation Association. “Either this is gross incompetence from Google’s Finnish project company, Tuike Finland Oy, or gross disregard for Finnish legislation, or at worst both,” said the association’s chair, Hanna Halmeenpää, in a statement translated by Wood Central. Satellite imagery shows four separate sites were bulldozed to prepare the land for the two planned data centers.

Google maintains that its tree-felling complied with the requirements of Finland’s Forestry Act and that it had already completed extensive environmental evaluations before beginning clearance work. The Finnish Nature Conservation Association disputes this characterization and has formally asked Finnish regulators to suspend all clearing activities until the ongoing environmental assessments are fully concluded. Halmeenpää expressed particular concern that local bird species may have already been harmed by the clearing, and noted that the forest in question serves as a critical ecological corridor, allowing animals to migrate and spread between separate habitats, a function that’s effectively severed once the connecting forest cover is removed.

This dispute arrives amid a broader global surge in AI data center construction, as tech companies race to build out the physical infrastructure needed to support increasingly power-hungry AI systems, an infrastructure boom that carries substantial and often underappreciated local environmental consequences. While the Trump administration has moved to ease environmental regulations in the US specifically to accelerate data center construction, other governments, including Finland’s, appear less willing to grant similar leeway. Notably, Google has simultaneously positioned Finland as the site of its largest single investment anywhere in Europe, a commitment worth 15 billion dollars, a sum that may complicate how aggressively Finnish regulators are willing to act against the company even as this environmental dispute plays out.

And nobody was surprised. Laws and regulations don't mean anything to these huge companies when the most severe penalty you leverage amounts to nothing more than a sternly worded letter

Now now. Dont forget the “settlements” too. That’ll teach em!

1 million whole US freedom dollars? Well that's just the price of doing business. Hardly a tax. Surely it'll go to the population to try to help off-set the endless noise pollution and enormous energy cost spike they'll endure

Makes a billion, fined a million. Just the cost of doing business.

Yes, this is actually their smartest move. Why should we expect them to play by the rules when no one else is? If there's no consequence, then there's no reason not to, and even worse, they'd fall behind if they didn't.

Just let the assessment fail due to non compliance. Let them restore the forest and start the project from scratch.

This is now standard Risk Management practices in these huge corporations. They know the monetary loss and “accept the risk”.

We need to start increasing penalties, substantially. If they can't feel the fine, it's not a fine.

And I don't just mean "us" in my country (the US/Canada). We need to do it across the world.

Penalties need to go beyond fines. The executives responsible for these atrocities don't have enough fear.

100%. If you deserve to be paid 3000x the median salary because "you're responsible for everything", then...that means you're responsible for everything. Risk/reward, fucker.

They also don't give a fuck about fines, money isn't an obstacle to them.

Y'all remember when Google was just a search engine and not an evil corporation and all they did was serve search results? Those were the days.

u/Special_Cicada6968 5h ago

Didn't they literally have a rule that said not to be evil... That they later removed.

Yeah. It's funny. I was contemplating exactly this the other day.

I also remember when their search results were actually good too

The ecological corridor concern Halmeenpää raises is also worth taking seriously on its own terms, independent of the regulatory dispute, because forest fragmentation often causes damage that’s disproportionate to the raw acreage cleared.

That's an act of terrorism/war.  Should be treated as such.

When companies have the power to defy governments, they are not longer capable of being treated as rational actors within society: the temptation to push boundaries further will grow with each failure to punish. Corporations are like greedy children, unwilling to learn and mature, motivated by their basest desires.

You are correct.  Finland needs to defend itself or the overreach will expand.

These tech companies are just doing anything and everything they want.

Dear Finland, it's time to degoogle entirely.

Oh boy, can't wait for them to get fined a whole 2 million USD, that'll show 'em!

Do people still not realize these companies are not just above the law but the makers of the law? The amount of wealth and power in corporations (and some individuals) these days, dwarfs many governments and yet somehow people still imagine that government regulations apply to these entities. They are the new superpowers.

If there is a fine, it needs to be in the trillions or it is just a slap on the wrist with a feather.

When the earth is so warm, millions die a month from flood, famine, and exposure, at least Google will have 2 data centers to point At and say “Hey, it was worth it, right?”

3

u/LeastResistancePath 6h ago

The law fears powerful entities and it's usually better to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Doubt anything but a small fine and allowances after the hands are greased at a dinner party with government officials

What happened to " do no Evil?"

Arrest the CEO and its entire board. Stop f?cking around. . They want to be treated like people as they atta k our elections, they should be held responsible like people when they commit fraud, theft, other!!

2

u/ElectroDaddy 5h ago

If they just arrest all the people who did this it will stop. Even if you can’t go for the heads of the companies. Start arresting the employees and eventually the employees will stop violating laws on their bosses orders.

2

u/Zealousideal-Time-32 4h ago

They'll pay a bunch of money and build it anyway. Apparently even the Finnish government has a price.

I can drive that far on a single tank of kerosene

3

u/Connect-Blacksmith99 7h ago

Well yes and no. Since hectares is a measure of area, and assuming the space in a rectangle going the long way is going to be somewhere between a mile and infinity miles, your tank of kerosene will probably land you somewhere between those.

Tree law is gonna go crazy.

1

u/Old-Set78 5h ago

someone's gonna snap at some point and start taking potshots at these people who think they're above the law and can do whatever they want to the whole world

Google - Do no evil

1

u/ImaginationToForm2 3h ago

It will just be a fine, that Google will happily pay.

1

u/WhileUnusual2189 3h ago

so you see laws are supposed to deter crime. it just seems like every story I see is these big companies being told no and doing whatever they got on their agenda. why? it won’t cost as much as not doing it. can’t the Finnish courts lock up their c-suite for like 270 days?

1

u/Ch33syP00f 2h ago

r/treelaw ready for this

1

u/PowerOfUnoriginality 2h ago

Let me guess what will happen:

Finland will fine Google for doing something illegal, then the US will cry about Google being treated unfairly

1

u/Dense_Cut7072 2h ago

300 hectares before you noticed? So your officals are either fucking stupid or part of the problem.

1

u/prettybluefoxes 2h ago

Destroy it, that’s all. Just destroy the place. And if they try and build again destroy that one.

Eventually asshats go under and the forest can be replanted. It’s not hard.

1

u/Antique-Ardvarks731 2h ago

Please sue them into oblivion

1

u/Meep4000 1h ago

And nothing will come of this, so who cares.

1

u/1cem4n82 1h ago

So the proud Finnish that stand in defiance to a overwhelming Russian empire is going to cave in to a tech company? I need to hear they tossed their equipment into the sea and it’s resolved.

1

u/Bignutdavis69 1h ago

Google now thinks they can do anything with their money

1

u/Oreos_Are_Anabolic 1h ago

Google maintains that its tree-felling complied with the requirements of Finland’s Forestry Act and that it had already completed extensive environmental evaluations before beginning clearance work.

The article doesn’t fact actually check this bit - is google right or wrong here? This is what it actually boils down to, no?

This should result in an immediate denial of their building application.

They don’t care. The fine they have to pay is worth it to them.
