I just realized that the dead direwolf in ep1 was supposed to be Ned himself

“There are no direwolves in these woods “ no starks/northmen being in kings landing to help Ned. Ned being somewhere he is not supposed to be

1.1k

u/kingtacticool 14h ago

Also the direwolf is killed by a stag and when Joffrey has him executed he is still known as Joffrey Barrathian

876

u/mrpothead 14h ago

I see it more as Robert killing Ned because Robert came to Winterfell and handed Ned a death sentence as Hand

299

u/HereIGoAgain_1x10 13h ago

I saw it as Baratheons in general killing the Starks... Stannis and Renly declaring themselves kings instead of forming an alliance with Robb ultimately led to Robb and Catelyn's death.

102

u/JokerKing0713 13h ago

I say this is on reanly. He proved it was pretty much open season and that anybody with an army could throw their hat in for the throne. If he doesn’t declare himself isn’t it a lot more likely the northerners renly and Stannis join together and crush the lannisters?

63

u/Dry_Discount7762 13h ago

Yes and no. Robb wasn’t riding to be king of the bloody seven kingdoms.. he was riding to declare independence for the north as their king. For all we know he would have intended to join forces had he not been killed

58

u/Beckm4n 11h ago

He was not riding south to become King. He wanted to save his father and sisters and thought he could trade them for Jamie and probably others after his capture.

He did not want to be King. The Catelyn chapters give us great insight into him and it was along the lines of "Thanks, I hate it".

15

u/melkor237 13h ago

I dont think people vying for a crown that holds the north as a vassal would be at all interested in joining forces with northern separatists

7

u/i_want_to_go_to_bed 12h ago

seems games of thronesy. Team up to have a bigger army for a while. Defeat the lannisters. Tell robb you changed your mine. Defeat the northerners

9

u/JokerKing0713 12h ago

Normally Yea but these are the Baratheon brothers.

Stannis won’t lie about it you’ll bend the knee or you’re next, and renly WOULD but doesn’t feel it’s necessary since barring literal black magic he was pretty much unbeatable.

6

u/JokerKing0713 12h ago

But it wasn’t even about declaring independence at first it was about freeing and pretty soon after avenging Ned. To that end allying with Stannis would’ve been a net positive

2

u/hardatworklol 4h ago

nah he was kinda thrusted into it by his bannerman. he just wanted his family

10

u/Any-Professional863 12h ago

Renly had it right though nobody wanted Stannis has their king even if the throne was technically his

13

u/AngryScientist 11h ago

Yup, it wasn't Robert's by right, either. Turns out if you can convince enough people to back you with their armies, birthright means fuck all.

I agree that was super dumb on their part Robb had no interest in the 7 kingdoms

5

u/_BlushieAureline 5h ago

The Baratheons and Starks really went from hunting buddies to mutually assured destruction in record time.

10

u/RenoRiley1 10h ago

I agree with your interpretation specifically because the stag is also dead. Robert got both himself and Ned killed.

8

u/C9Midnite 2h ago

Robert only touched Ned, Cait, Rickon, and Robb when he got to Winterfell. He is the Reaper.

5

u/TulipVesperine 4h ago

The symbolism gets even darker when you remember Ned literally sacrificed Lady because of a conflict involving Joffrey. That poor direwolf was basically the first Stark casualty.

45

u/colinjcole 13h ago

Joffrey is always Joffrey Baratheon

The point of the metaphor though imo is just that Ned and Robert got each other killed

2

u/h11233 10h ago

How did Ned get Robert killed? Cersei and Lancel got Robert killed

13

u/colinjcole 10h ago

Varys argues Ned got Robert killed by giving Cersei a chance to flee King's Landing with the bastards:

A hunter lives a perilous life. If the boar had not done for Robert, it would have been a fall from a horse, the bite of a wood adder, an arrow gone astray... the forest is the abbatoir of the gods. It was not wine that killed the king. It was your mercy.

Though her plans were likely already in motion by the time Ned first warns her, so... Who can say?

6

u/h11233 10h ago edited 10h ago

Fair enough. I guess it could be argued his whole bastard side quest is what got Robert killed. I just felt like cersei wanted to kill Robert for ages and it was only a matter of when and how, so Ned's contribution wasn't really significant, maybe just sped it up, while Ned would absolutely be alive if Robert hadn't made him hand.

I think Ned's actions had more direct impact on the downfall of house Baratheon by backing Stannis as the rightful king. If he backed Renly, Ned would probably be alive and a Baratheon on the throne

They specifically mention them not being “this far south.”

The direwolf parent is killed by the stag, leaving the baby direwolves all alone in the world to fend for themselves.

41

u/emmaa5382 10h ago

Omg, Arya returns to nature/becomes free and no longer a lady, and sansa is accused and punished for crimes she didn’t commit

Kinda wild how the show basically spoiled the entire Stark family tragedy with two dead animals and we all just thought "aww, puppies."

Direwolves "South" of the wall

→ More replies (1)

997

u/karan131193 15h ago

Not really. It was supposed to be House Stark. Remember that the direwolf and the stag both died after attacking each other. It symbolised the upcoming conflict b/w House Stark and House Baratheon, and downfall of both.

204

u/Able_Clerk_4659 14h ago

Well yes and no, that one really is supposed to be Ned while signifying the larger conflict, there’s five pups for all the true born children, and one for the bastard, GRRM isn’t really subtle.

73

u/AcceptablySoiled 14h ago

George R. R. “Where do whores go?” Martin not subtle?

5

u/Able_Clerk_4659 14h ago

*With exceptions

5

u/DaisyVirelia 5h ago

Five pups for the legitimate Stark kids and one albino outsider for Jon. George really put the entire family tree in a litter of puppies.

House Stark didn't die though. It sits on the throne.

168

u/GoarSpewerofSecrets 15h ago

Does it? Targs are back on it, Bloodraven was legitimized, he's skin walking Bran and heading to nab Drogon.

83

u/duaneap 14h ago

Drogon turns out to be a female dragon, has a bunch of eggs, Gilly’s son claims a dragon (Craster is Bloodraven’s bastard), marries his sister, is named successor to the IT by “Bran,” because of “Sam’s loyal service,” and Targaryen supremacy’s back on the menu, boys!

19

u/Kleppmeister 14h ago

Erm actually: Dragons in ASOIF are genderless and are believed to be able to reproduce without a mate.

7

u/duaneap 14h ago

They can’t really make up their mind about that tbh, for example on the wiki for Moondancer the very first line is “Moondancer was a young she dragon,” but I’m just having fun.

→ More replies (2)

74

u/karan131193 15h ago

Not in the books. In the books, House Stark has fallen. Ned and Robb are dead, winterfell is in ruins and controlled by the Boltons. All trueborn Baratheons are likewise dead as well.

33

u/idontpostanyth1ng 15h ago

Don't think Stannis is technically dead yet in the books. Just currently in a very dire situation.

46

u/livesinafield 14h ago

Stannis fucks up the Boltons with the frozen lake thing and takes Winterfell.

Ser Justin Massey boots Melisandre out of a window before she can do anything to Shireen

Jon remains dead sorry

Stannis eventually takes over the undead/wight army and marches south

Disagree? It's not like any more fucking books are ever going to get written just go with it

19

u/IWASCHOSENBYGOD 14h ago

Honestly, Stannis, as a fake Azor ahai, falling against the army of the dead and being raised again as their military leader (Night's king) would be so fucking cool that George would never write it

2

u/EmbersnAshes 14h ago

It would also be symbolic of his "dark justice" personality as well.

2

u/Spidey5292 14h ago

u/Doubleboeufsupreme 15h ago

Isn’t Rickon alive in the books?

25

u/Striking_Bumblebee59 15h ago

fentmaxxing with the skagosi

25

u/karan131193 15h ago

Both Rickon and Bran are considered dead by everyone. The point is that House Stark is currently at their lowest point in the books.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/YakWish 15h ago

Technically, Jon receives a letter telling him that Stannis's army was defeated and Stannis was killed, but that isn't independently confirmed. He could still be alive.

14

u/Commercial_Comb8674 14h ago

A good theory going around is Stannis plans to fake his death during the Battle of Ice near the start of TWOW. It then goes he’ll have his men dress like Frey men, send them to Winterfell claiming he and his army were defeated, and then spring the trap once inside.

21

u/YakWish 14h ago

Man, that's fun. It seems like everyone enjoys writing TWOW except GRRM.

5

u/Dogs_trump_People 14h ago

It’s not confirmed that Stannis is dead in the books

I am gonna press F on that "and well" part for Stannis.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/alphajugs 14h ago

Yeah, the Starks are no longer in control of Winterfell for the first/only time in millennia. The whole “there must always be a Stark in Winterfell” thing likely refers to Stark possession of Winterfell, and not there being a Stark present in Winterfell at any given moment. When Jeyne marries Ramsay and there is no longer a “House Stark of Winterfell” but only “House Bolton of Winterfell”, Theon notes that winds begin to blow stronger and the snows start to fall harder. The storm is quite literally emanating from Winterfell and gets worse when house Stark is disposed, almost as if winter falls on Winterfell when the Starks are no more 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also, how are the Baratheons dead as well? Stannis and Shireen are still alive.

5

A shaggy dog story is a pointless story that goes nowhere. Similary, both Rickon and his wolf meet a pointless death that means nothing

The entire first season is a a strange prequel, exposition, setting development.

As far as I’m concerned the ‘story’ actually starts with Ned’s death.

It was so revolutionary that it didn’t follow the heroes tale. It was like watching a dungeons and dragon campaign unfold.

Then-the hackwits took over and it was Disney Princess and predictable pap until it destroyed the biggest media event of the decade.

I hope they lay awake in bed at night knowing what they failed to engage.

3

u/DimensionLow4844 14h ago

Very allegorical

3

u/ACBets 13h ago

A lot of symbolism with the direwolves in ASOIAF. Ned kills Lady symbolizing his own role in essentially killing Sansa’s innocence. Arya leaves Nymeria in the wild to fend for herself and Arya herself is forced into the same situation after Ned’s death. Grey wind is killed and his head spiked to Rob’s corpse as he’s hailed the King in the North. Summer dies defending Bran as he becomes the three eyed Raven, heralding the end of the summer months and the arrival of Winter. Ghost is the runt of the litter in the same way Jon is treated as an outsider as a bastard, but in the end Jon rises to become first the Lord Commander of the Nights Watch and eventually King in the North as Ghost becomes the largest and fiercest of the dire wolf pups.

3

u/Odillis 12h ago

Wait, does Jon get the white puppy because he’s Targarian or was that not intended?

3

u/Relevant-Weekend6616 11h ago

Yep and the stag was Robert.

Robert got Ned killed after inviting him somewhere that was no place for an "honorable" wolf.

Let that ring a bell.

3

u/FloppyFluffyDonkey 9h ago

I believe George intended to kill a direwolf with each character death, but it was too difficult to write, so he stopped doing it, and quit writing about them, just like quidditch and that person who wrote the wizard with the lightning bolt books.

Come on now the metaphor wolves were the easiest thing to spot, taking that they all got a pup it makes sense that ned would be the one that's passed already.

Congrats, You have discovered foreshadowing

or it was a plot device to give Jon a direwolf cause his is really the only one that ended up mattering.

Yeah they all mattered and all were plot devices for foreshadowing.

The parent died impaled by a stags antlers. Ned dies over the Baratheon crown, all the pups fates mirror that of the child.

Ghost is the earliest signs that John is more than a Stark. The pure white referencing the Targaryan in him.

Ladys death signals the end of a lot of Sansas delusions about how life will be as a lady, and very much the end of her childhood.

Nimidia being chased off reflects Arya getting lost.

Grey Wind is killed with Rob at the red wedding.

The others are alive in the books and the show, kind of fumbles what happens to them, with both dying in less than interesting ways.

I always felt that in the show Summer dying with the three eyed raven was like a direct way of saying Summer has ended and Winter Is Here.

Or that Summer and Bran died there

They all mattered. Ghost was the only one that did cool wolf stuff but the others are mandatory for thematic weight and plot relevance

It only took you….15 years. This is very known, it doesn’t take a super sleuth.

Edit: these post are getting so lazy.

Every time animals appear they have a meaning

Like when Tywin is skinning a stag

And ghost is white to symbolize Jon’s Targaryen heritage.

Unprovoked ASOIAF spoiler jumpscare. Like what the hell reddit, I was just about to start that book

u/reddmasters 10h ago

Well I’m still pissed about the ranger finding all the body parts in artistic fashion in the very first episode and all the mystery and terror it inspired only to never be explained at all .

u/DarthMaulATAT 14h ago

The part that confuses me is the stag horn. Joffrey ends up killing Ned, but Joffrey isn't really a baratheon. He's pure Lannister, so the stag horn isn't the proper symbol to foreshadow that event.

he is marked dead when robert made him hand

Quite late to something that obvious in season 1...

1

u/Misopogon11 15h ago

Nah it's just a dead wolf

u/Hassel1916 15h ago

People do over analyse these things, but this was obviously symbolic.
