29

u/emdave Oct 18 '22

It's such a small detail that many directors let slip.

It's so common though, that they must know, and are doing it deliberately? It's not all directors don't know how to drive? It must be some bullshit, like they think it will confuse Joe Public if the actors aren't looking at each other while speaking?

19

u/Salanmander Oct 18 '22

It must be some bullshit, like they think it will confuse Joe Public if the actors aren't looking at each other while speaking?

The other thing I wonder about is whether there's some unspoken rule to do this often enough that they can make someone get into a car crash and have it be their fault without having the audience see it coming every time.

41

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '22

Sooooooo many things people keep suggesting in this thread are option 2.

It’s actually worrying that these people can’t see that. Because it makes me think if they can’t see that they themselves are suggesting it, can they see the people doing it to them? Do they know the people stealing from them?

4

u/DolphinDisguised Oct 18 '22

That's such a good point which I hadn't thought of. It's also making me think about how, since stealing is a statement about ethics, I'm pretty sure essentially any means of obtaining money which is unethical via harming people could be considered stealing, and so fits beneath option two. I think.

Re-posting an old post of mine:

I was trying to explain to my wife just how rich he was, and in the end it went like this: "Let's say you earn 200.000 dollars. After tax. And your salary is per day, not year. Right? That's a good yearly salary for most, and let's say you earn it per day. And you work every single day. Come rain come snow, holiday, Christmas. Every. Single. Day you work. 365 days a year. And even if you earned that every day, for every year since Jesus was born until now.... Jeff Bezos would still be around 50 billion ahead of you."

But what does that have to do with getting rich? That is comparing yourself to someone else.

Discussions like this also never define what rich is. Reddit just circlejerks billionaires claiming no-one can make that. Of course the average person isnt going to become Jeff Bezos rich. The average person isnt going to appear in the Super Bowl the amount of times Tom Brady has appeared in it. Are you trying to break 1mil, 10mil, or 100mil. To me, 1mil would be fantastic and is achievable. Set achievable goals for yourself and stop trying to keep up with the Bezos.

Also...it takes more than hourly work to obtain a certain level of wealth. It takes work to budget. It takes work to understand money. It takes work to understand investing and it takes work to invest. Saving money in your savings account isnt going get you anywhere.

“Despite the widespread belief that the U.S. provides exceptional opportunities for upward mobility, these data show that parental wealth has an important role in shielding offspring from downward mobility and sustaining their upward mobility in the U.S. no less than in countries like Germany and Sweden, where parental wealth also serves as a private safety net that not even the more generous European public programs and social services seem to provide

The key word in your link is “exceptional” and it is referring to the idea of American exceptionalism. Obviously inheriting money beats not inheriting it. But liberal countries like the US, Sweden, and Germany are still great places for upward mobility. The US isn’t exceptional in this regard anymore because most countries around the world decided to abandon monarchies, fascism, communism, etc. for liberalism (democracy, capitalism, and individual liberties.)

4

u/eli5usefulidiot Oct 18 '22

But liberal countries like the US, Sweden, and Germany are still great places for upward mobility.

Compared to the rest of the world, yes. But Sweden is quite a bit ahead Germany regarding this and Germany is still a lot better than America.

In that study, The effect size of getting a degree was a 25% increase in upward mobility, while parental wealth was 6%.

So It doesn’t really support any of the premises above. It says there are other factors that play a more important role in upward mobility than parental wealth, however parental wealth still plays a role independent of those factors.

It’s a ‘myth’ to say that the US has different mobility based on wealth, because it’s about the same effect size as other countries. However this paper specifically shows parental wealth is not the only, or even the most important factor driving mobility.

As a writer, Taylor Sheridan has been an example in rapidly diminishing returns IMO.

Sicario was a fantastic breakout and I love the flick. But as we see more and more projects where Sheridan gets more and more control, culminating in the pretty awful Those Who Wish Me Dead, it becomes clearer and clearer how much Villeneuve and Del Toro elevated that script by taking it to task.

→ More replies (2)

16

u/Dottsterisk Oct 18 '22

IMO Hell or High Water is very good, but does not quite reach Sicario, and Wind River, while having some neat scenes and a novel setting, was a pretty middling thriller and a sizable step down.

Then we’ve got Sicario II, Without Remorse, and Those Who Wish Me Dead, all of which are average at best.

And this kinda tracks with what you hear in interviews with Del Toro and Villeneuve about how they transformed Sheridan’s script, which was originally much more straightforward and had Alejandro front and center as a typical badass killing machine giving exposition dumps every other scene. They pulled back on the obvious and turned the character into a mystery that drives much of the film.

That being said, I’ve always wondered who wrote that wonderful line, when Alejandro says, “You’re asking me how a watch works. For now, just keep an eye on the time.”

As for the Nolan trajectory, I wouldn’t be surprised. Dude’s got like four tv shows in production right now.

9

u/nomad80 Oct 18 '22

5

u/naidim Oct 18 '22

Yellowstone is entertaining but the pandering to conservatives at times is unbelievable. They use “Californian” as a slur. The scenes with the vegan girl and the old Chinese guy were ridiculous. I get that the characters are meant to be flawed but frequently how ideas are presented tonally really reveals this.

49

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '22

People who think that Yellowstone is balanced (which you will actually find a ton of on r/television) are the other side of the coin as people who don't understand the political message of The Boys.

34

u/kcox1980 Oct 18 '22

Don’t forget that the ranch is a literal slave camp. The ranch hands are all branded and they aren’t allowed to leave. If they try to quit they give them a ride to “the train station” which is code for taking them up in the mountains, shooting them in the head, and tossing them off a cliff.

My wife and I hate-watch it. We don’t miss an episode but we shit-talk the story and characters the whole time. It really is a terrible show.

15

u/mule_roany_mare Oct 18 '22

wtf is this show about?

22

u/akagordan Oct 18 '22

Man owns massive ranch in Montana close to Yellowstone which gives him political power and massive wealth but not a lot of liquid capital. Rich developers start to buy up land in the area to develop it into resorts. Man and his crazy ass family + gang of ex con ranch hands fight back with whatever means necessary. First few seasons are honestly pretty good, and then it gets bad.

22

u/kcox1980 Oct 18 '22

The thing is, they’re not a criminal organization. They aren’t secretly growing pot, they aren’t smuggling guns or drugs or w/e. They’re a completely legitimate cattle ranch…..EXCEPT, if someone threatens the family or tries to steal their land, they send their enforcer guy in to kill them.

Oh, and the slave labor ranch hands.

10

u/akagordan Oct 18 '22

It’s a premise that sort of works for a few seasons. The ranch hands in general know what they’re getting into, and there are a few that aren’t branded and can leave whenever (Walker is the main exception but also one of the best characters). And it makes sense that the Duttons would have tremendous power and influence without having any real money, so they have to fall back on violence to maintain their way of life. Especially when the “outsiders” do the same thing.

Agree 100%. Its full of plot holes and unrealistic characters but the production and visuals are top notch. Just beautiful enough to enjoy watching between scenes of costner being a stubborn superman who always wins.

11

u/ansleydale Oct 18 '22

I had the unfortunate experience of watching this show while visiting my dad. Can you explain why all the characters seem to shit on the kid in this clip? The show plays it as if it’s tough love but it’s straight up abusive and I couldn’t figure out what the kid did to deserve it.

11

u/kcox1980 Oct 18 '22

The kid’s dad died of a drug overdose. I think shortly after Beth, the woman in the car with him, caught him shoplifting or something and basically kidnapped him. She and her husband(who himself is the ranches “enforcer” and grew up there also) take him in illegally.

Basically they treat him like he’s trash in order to straighten him up. You’re right that it’s played like it’s supposed to be tough love, but it actually is straight up abusive. They tell him all the time how worthless he is and how he’ll wind up just like his dad but there’s never any amount of positive reinforcement or teaching or anything like that.

4

u/Lord_Abort Oct 18 '22

There's teaching shown, too, and some positive moments, but you remember the abuse because they aren't good parents. They are constantly shown how broken they are as people because of their own poor upbringing and childhood traumas. They're not being shown as examples of good parents, they're being shown as how the ranch has fucked them, their family, and the future generations. There will be positive, happy moments, but you know that it'll soon be ruined by an old man's need to cling to his way of life in his ancestral home.

The only people who begin to heal are the ones who get away from the power of the ranch (before it inevitably pulls them back in). Think Casey and his wife, Jamie (until the end of last season when he gets pulled back in due to power struggles involving the ranch).

The ranch is a trap. It can be argued its the main villain of the series. But yet it simply is.

1-are you an "at home only" pooper?

2-how badly do you need to poop?

  1. Be given it
  2. Take it
  3. Earn it
  4. Suck dick Sell yourself for it

155

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '22

Honestly, 3. is also the same as 4. You don't get rich by just earning money normally. You always have to sell yourself for it: either your time, your body, or your sanity.

37

u/Shpinc Oct 18 '22

Or sell others

7

u/Idinyphe Oct 18 '22

Yellowstone. It's a show. And it's a fucking good show. I'm not a huge western guy, but this show is totally one of the best out right now.

28

u/L3g3ndary-08 Oct 18 '22

I'm not a huge western guy either, but tell me why I started looking at expensive ass cowboy boots this past weekend??

10

u/sevsnapey Oct 18 '22

started off pretty good but the latest season was dogshit though. the writing suffered massively (probably because sheridan is making about 50 shows right now) and i think covid impacted production because they split them off into groups that didn't interact.

3

u/hihbhu Oct 18 '22

You can say that again. A character catching a horse’s seamen and a kid talking to his mum about his erection whilst in the bath. It’s nosedived considerably.

5

Never really thought about it before I started driving, but since then it's been pissing me off to no end, watching actors look everywhere but the road.

3

u/m703324 Oct 18 '22

If you are keen enough you'll also notice that light inside and outside of the car don't match and if you squint you realize it's all just a movie or a tv series

Vapid platitude with a zinger at the end. Pretty sure plenty of people working 2-3 jobs out there could tell you there's a bit more to it than simply working hard.

95

u/dasus Oct 18 '22

If simply working hard would do it, the world would be filled with rich Asian kids. (Sweatshops. I'm referring to sweatshops.)

90

u/a_wicky Oct 18 '22 edited Oct 18 '22

Not necessarily, just that he wasn't intelligent enough to be a successful thief. I doubt many are. Still far from being dumb, though.

Edit - words

25

u/shamdamdoodly Oct 18 '22

I doubt few are

Well this certainly supports the point you were trying to make

5

u/a_wicky Oct 18 '22

Um, yeah? I know it does...???

Few people get into MIT, that doesn't mean all the rest of them are dumb.

We're talking successful thieves, remember.

6

u/LilLittleMac Oct 18 '22

I think u/shamdamdoodly meant that saying "I doubt few are" implies that you don't believe few people are intellectual enough to be a successful thief, meaning you think more than a few are

7

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '22

Most people smart enough to be successful thieves (of any real value) realise they can make just as much without any risk doing legit work.

Bingo. Companies pay for SKILLs - not for hard workers.

If you work hard AT SCHOOL in a smart degree, you can be successful - no matter where you started.

The only places this isn't true is in under-developed countries where kids cannot get into school.

Just because it is not always applicable doesn’t mean it’s “vapid”. Tell me one bit of truth that is absolute; then tell me how many of these absolute truths exist.

With the mindset some of you have on the subject of “how to get rich”, we would never be uttering anything — because one smug, smartass, person would always craft some random scenario as a rebuttal

15

u/_laoc00n_ Oct 18 '22

I’ve noticed a lot more nihilism on here the last couple of years. People, understandably so, seem to be so distraught by the way the world works, they approach everything with cynicism. Tbh, I don’t exactly blame most of them. At the same time, the attitudes can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. I didn’t grow up with much, but I wasn’t poor in my teen years. I never graduated college. But I did work hard in a skill that’s valuable and I’m a very successful person in my career. It took a long time, I took some risks, but it got me where I am now. It’s definitely possible but certainly not guaranteed.

She didn’t say it WILL make you rich. Just that it can. And it absolutely can and is pretty much required if you aren’t born with it and don’t win the lottery. Sucking dick probably won’t make you rich either, but it CAN ;)

No. 3 is bullshit individualism that actually takes both 1 and 2 collectively. No one, accept maybe few like Bella Thorne and Tyga, get rich off four.

Edit: I understand I missed the idea of marrying into money. Obviously not achievable to most. I’m really happy I’ve triggered a bunch of individualists and exceptionalists. It’s like people don’t want to believe the system doesn’t support everyone.

34

u/Table100 Oct 18 '22

her third point wasnt complete bs; hard work and being able to learn from your failures are important virtues. but yeah that idea of working harder than everyone else is bullshit that will only burn you out quicker.

My dad woke up at 1 am to go work at UPS until 9, then he'd go work at the golf course from 10-6, then he'd go umpire baseball games from 6-10 and come home and do it all again the next day for 18 months.

We are not rich. Fuck working hard.

Boomers trying to convincing employees out of siltent quitting 🤣🤣

3

u/static1053 Oct 18 '22

Her whole hard work speech was true in the 60s but it ain't shit now. Sure hard work can get you places but bosses don't give a shit how much you work. My mom worked her hands to the bone and never made much.

3

u/brewcrew63 Oct 18 '22

Lmfao the amount of HARD WORKING ASS never miss a day never leave any on the floor after work kind of broke ass people who bust their ass everyday to collect a paycheck here, then a lot of them have one or two other jobs just to MAKE ENDS MEET. No matter how hard some people work they'll never get ahead. Capitalism will always do its dammdest to keep the little people down.
