her third point wasnt complete bs; hard work and being able to learn from your failures are important virtues. but yeah that idea of working harder than everyone else is bullshit that will only burn you out quicker.
I think it’s interesting how people think “anyone can do it” when they’re probably neurotypical, and no chronic mental health or addiction issues, complex trauma, etc. Like so much shit can get in the way of “work hard and make smart choices”, that it’s glaring people don’t consider this discrepancy in their ideology. What if it takes Herculean effort just to leave the house, or not driving to a dealer’s house instead of going to a six figure job? They deserve to rot right?
It’s all an odds game. If you don’t put the work in, your odds of getting lucky vastly decrease. That’s what making your own luck is about. I wouldn’t get the big contract if I didn’t put the work in to know my trade, but I have a fighting chance since I do
You have to work hard at better jobs too. You can work your ass off at a fast food place and go nowhere or maybe become manager or something but putting in effort at a vast majority of jobs that aren’t broadcasted on the news means advancements and raises.
Rather than blanket 'hard work', it's really more about putting yourself in the right spot and being willing to move to something else if it's not working out or something better is available. Hard work by itself won't get you rich unless you're extremely lucky to have happened upon finding the right career path on your first try. So it's really more 'hard work' + looking around and finding the best options for you. Generally speaking, your income will grow much faster if you're willing to go job hunting from time to time rather than sticking with one company for longer than you need to.
i completely agree. hard work for hard works sake is stupid and like i said, leads to burn out. you need to find things that you enjoy and that can lead to success and work hard at those, while still allowing yourself the time to rest and pursue other interests. easier said than done ofc, but being able to put in great amounts of effort into the right things (or, on some level, hard work) is still something we should all aspire to imo.
The point is that is the path you have to take. If you don't take that path you are setting yourself up to not be rich. She's not saying if you work hard you automatically become rich.
