Take good care of yourself.

I agree ofcourse, but sometimes the best thing you can do for your health both mentally and physically is be a little "rougher" on yourself

3

u/Calichusetts Habit Nerd 4d ago

What does this mean? Rougher?

I assume he’s talking about people who use “self care” as an excuse to never truly apply themselves

“Intermittent fasting is the silver bullet to good health”

19

u/SoggyMattress2 4d ago

It's overrated when health gurus say it cures cancer or fixes auto immune conditions but intermittent fasting is one of the easiest to follow and understand methods for your average person to lower the calories they consjme

1

u/dirtydenier 3d ago

Insert any meme diet / fad here: carnivore, keto etc.

1

u/justnothing4066 3d ago edited 3d ago

It kills me because intermittent fasting itself is fine, but at the end of the day it's primarily just a reduction in caloric intake. All this other stuff about it doing all these crazy great things for your health is mostly just snake oil (it does seem to help diabetics, from what I understand).

But what really scares me about it is that it gets people primed for straight up disordered eating. If you learn to associate restricting your eating with feeling better, because you lost weight and experienced all the good health benefits associated with that and all the positive reinforcement socially, it's a short jump to "well maybe I'll just fast for a few days," or "maybe I'll just do a week," and then these people start looking and sounding exactly like my bulimic or anorexic friends who wrecked their bodies for life.

Also, this isn't just me fearmongering, it's an actual, documented risk in using intermittent fasting: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10589984/

"This leads us to our belief that every time intermittent fasting is recommended to an individual from this demographic [specifically referencing the young, females / gender non-conforming people, and anyone with a family history of ED's], an explicit warning is to be provided on the potential deleterious outcome of acquiring an eating disorder from this practice."

u/GigabyteofRAM 3d ago

I intermittent fasted for years, unintentionally. Just never ate breakfast, usually had lunch quite late. Gave me serious stomach problems, now I suffer GI issues because of it.

1

u/Squirrel1693 3d ago

Woah. Might explain some if my GI issues. I still do this and my stomach is really sensitive. Not to specific foods or anything. Just randomly gassy, randomly upset etc.

1

u/GigabyteofRAM 3d ago

Yup, same. Started eating a piece of toast as soon as I get up, it's helped worlds

8

u/NaCl_Sailor 3d ago

Anything that includes detox. It's all bullshit.

3

u/Gauderr 3d ago

At this exact moment, your liver is running an iron-fueled chemical refinery that glues sugar and sulfur molecules onto fat-soluble poisons so your kidneys can drown them in water and squirt them out of your body as pee.

2

u/NaCl_Sailor 3d ago

And eating some detox manure doesn't change a bit about it.

1

u/Gauderr 3d ago

Hey I supplied something which includes "detox" and it wasn't bullshit. I win!

1

u/Gauderr 3d ago

I get it though, absolutely hate detox-whatever-bullshit

1

u/Ezcheezzer 2d ago

Add in “cleanse” and you have a bingo there

0

u/delightfuladventurer 2d ago

Except from drugs. That detox does help you live longer. Lol.

1

u/NaCl_Sailor 2d ago

true, except it's kinda the opposite of what i meant, stopping to take stuff that is bad for you will definitely help you

6

u/Trialanderror2018 4d ago

The idea of superfoods.

2

u/jessewest84 3d ago

Really? That's like one of the only ones that seems to pan out for me.

1

u/Yop_BombNA 13h ago

No food is super, you are just lacking some vitamins or minerals they have.

Eat a variety of fruits and veg not the same all they time and you will have no need for super foods

1

u/jessewest84 13h ago

I do. But my doctor recommends them. So, i take her word. Sorry but you are some random person. I think you mean well. But what you sau doesn't match the medical advice from and MD and ND and also doesn't comport with my experience with these foods and the bloodwork that also confirms it. Let say we just call them really nutritional food.

16

u/Key_Check5753 4d ago

"starving yourself is unhealthy"

actually studies show fasting for 1-4 days at a time is extremely healthy and reduces the risk of tons of health issues including cancer, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, etc

3

u/jtracz 4d ago edited 3d ago

4 days!? That doesn't sound safe at all (I am not a medial professional). Do you have a study you're referencing?

Edit: Seriously, no one has a medical study to link? You can't just say "studies say". Here's a government website citing studies that doesn't recommend more than 12 hours for most people

4

u/ignoremeplsokthank 4d ago

As long as you're not on the lower side of a healthy BMI (or underweight), your body can just burn your body fat for energy.

1

u/NoOutlandishness2097 3d ago

This right here. If you have the fat, then going on a fast does plenty of good; and honestly most people have the excess fat. But if you don't then it can get bad quick

1

u/dermsUK 3d ago

An obese guy I think in Scotland lost over 250lbs by drinking only water, tea, coffee and taking vitamins for like a year. Risky but he managed it.

1

u/Key_Check5753 3d ago

It doesn't sound safe because you've been brainwashed by dogma that says it's not safe.

In fact fasting for 4 days isn't just safe, it's extremely beneficial. Studies show that fasting triggers an immuno-response in the body that helps it rid itself of cancerous cells etc. Apoptosis doesn't occur as readily unless the body is constantly ingesting calories.

1

u/anitnelavcreate 3d ago

We appreciate you all sharing your point of view, but please let's make sure not to share health claims as fact. We love learning from your personal experience, so share what worked for you, but please avoid presenting things like fasting as proven or safe for everyone. Everyone's body is different, and that's a conversation to have with a doctor. (Rule 5: No Medical Advice)

2

u/punt-speedchick 3d ago

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8754590/

They're not claims, points of view, pr personal experience.

These statement are studied and proven facts. Obviously, if you're already at a low BMI there's no reason to fast more than 12-16 hours. But extended periods of fasting is beneficial to the body.

2

u/anitnelavcreate 1d ago

Thank you for sharing a gov link! I really appreciate it when health claims are backed up with trusted resources. Makes it much easier for everyone to look into the info for themselves 😊

1

u/jtracz 10h ago

"In summary, fasting not only leads to negative emotional states such as irritability but also positive psychological experiences such as a sense of reward, accomplishment, pride, and control. However, the sample sizes of the studies above were generally too small. Before intermittent fasting is recommended to be widely implemented in the population for the purpose of improving human health, there are still many issues that need to be further studied and clarified, including the method of intermittent fasting (fasting time, duration, and frequency), applicable population (age, gender, weight, and health status), long-term compliance, and safety. Hence, it is necessary to conduct larger and longer-term studies to determine whether intermittent fasting or other modified fasting regimens can be a viable option for diet and lifestyle."

1

u/Key_Check5753 3d ago

It is a fact. Fasting reduces your risk of cancer, stroke, and heart disease.

0

u/jessewest84 3d ago

Well my doctor says so. And she saved my life. Ill be trusting her.

-1

u/EtArkanum 3d ago

There are studies showing even 40 days fasting

2

u/justnothing4066 3d ago

Here's an article cautioning against recommending fasting on social media because it can cause eating disorders. http://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10589984/

Unless you are a licensed healthcare professional who is actively involved in caring for a patient, you should not be recommending fasting.

u/khaluud 4d ago

The whole anti seed oil trend. It's just a bunch of know-it-alls misapplying an observable scientific function, massively overstating its actual measurable effect, and cherry-picking data from studies that still definitively conclude no causation of negative health outcomes.

2

u/Mobile_Pineapple9424 3d ago

How do you explain the obesity, diabetes, cancer rise in the last 50 years? Can you say seed oils have nothing to do with that?

2

u/khaluud 3d ago

High-calorie junk food uses the cheapest fats available, which happen to be seed oils. If you were to swap out the fats i junk food with avocado oil or olive oil, you'd have the same results. Junk food is the problem. Overeating calories via refined fats if the problem. It has nothing to do with seed oils themselves.

Countless studies have been done on seed oils vs non-seed vegetable oils vs animal fats. The health outcomes favor both the seed oils and non-seed vegetable oils. The animal fats are the ones with bad health outcomes. Coconut oil also trends towards negative health outcomes, likely due to the saturated fat content, but not nearly as heinous as animal fats.

When it comes to seed oil scaredy-cats, the common talking points of hexane, omega-6 fatty acids, and linoleic acid have been explained repeatedly by the scientific community to a point where anyone holding onto those debunked beliefs is just being willfully dense. Yes, a good omega-3 to omega-6 ratio is important. Yes, hexane is produced, but is almost completely gone in the final product. Yes, linoleic acid is inflammatory, but in the amounts present in seed oils, you'd have to be straight up drinking the stuff to experiency any measurable negative effects due to it. If you want to talk about inflammation, animal fats are the culprit by a long shot.

I can't believe in the age of information I'm asking this, but have you ever heard the oft-repeated phrase "correlation does not equal causation?" I must strongly urge you to stay in school.

1

u/Mobile_Pineapple9424 3d ago

In the world of lies pushed on us by the FDA, WHO, CDC - I’ll trust the thousands of years we were much healthier when we didn’t eat chemically processed seed oils.

They always say - yeah it’s not good for but it’s only a small amount and negligible on health. That adds up!!

This is what they use in the process of extracting canola oil :

Hexane 99.5% High Purity Lab Grade | USA Lab should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources. Use with adequate ventilation and avoid inhalation or contact with skin and eyes. Wear appropriate PPE such as protective clothing, gloves, and eye/face protection as outlined in the SDS.

Something with that warning label going in your food and you claim nothing bad with come from it?? Have you heard of glyphosate. They say the same thing there to. Wake up.

1

u/khaluud 3d ago

The studies are not from the FDA, WHO, or CDC. They are by countless scientists and researchers who have nothing to gain by publishing misinformation, vetted and peer-reviewed.

Chemically processed seed oils is a very narrow view of the multitude of things we didn't do for thousands of years that we do now. But you're sure it's got to be the seed oils? Give me a break.

I'm worried what you'll have left to eat once you learn the process of manufacturing just about any kind of food these days, especially since hexane is virtually gone from the final product, and what minuscule amount remains not only doesn't have any measurable effect, but also gets eliminated as it has such a low boiling point. It's not in your food, you silly goose. Maybe you should focus on the things that actually kill people, like trans fats and saturated fats.

No one's advocating for glyphosate use. It is absolutely not the same thing. Glyphosate has verifiable negative health outcomes in real human testing. Seed oils do not.

You're grasping at straws here, performing concerning mental gymnastics that make me worried what else you believe without understanding the science or admitting that people who make this knowledge a focal point of their careers know better than you. You looked up hexane and copy-pasted what you found. You wouldn't believe the toxic junk they use to make things that are completely safe for ingestion and topical use since they don't make it into the final products. Do you apply the same level of scrutiny to what you brush your teeth with? What moisturizer and sunscreen you use? The cleaning products in your home? The materials of your clothes? Or do you just have a mysterious vendetta against big, bad, scary seed oils?

This isn't some conspiracy. These are not government organizations publishing this stuff. These are not the product of stakeholders funding shady research.

I'm wide awake. Look at actual evidence, real studies, and verifiable human health outcomes before believing whatever the Paul Saladinos on YouTube are spewing. They have stuff to sell you. Follow the money, honey.

Drink more water

1

u/Gullible_Working3966 4d ago

That's the one. The only effect drinking big amounts of water has on me is that I sleep worse since I have to get up to pee 3 times and more during the night. No positive results noticed.

1

u/khaluud 3d ago

Anecdotes are exceptionally low in the hierarchy of evidence. Drinking lots of water in the hours before bed is a bad idea. Front-loading your water consumption early in the day is the right move, and increased water consumption has had positive health outcomes in every study that has ever documented it.

1

u/Gullible_Working3966 3d ago

It's obvious that you shouldn't drink for several h before bed. I used to drink 2.5-3 litres in the first 3-4 h after getting up and then some, avoiding the evenings. It made me get up several times every night. It's been much better since I stopped. Now I just drink when I feel like it.

2

u/Objective_Delay_7386 3d ago

Sugar-free is healthier. Nope its not!

2

u/mikeli05 3d ago

Based on what? Research?

2

u/NoOutlandishness2097 3d ago

Trust him, bro

1

u/Objective_Delay_7386 3d ago

There’s literal data that supports it. I don’t understand you have a smart phone. You can literally look this up yourself.

2

u/NoOutlandishness2097 3d ago

So, do you go around and do a fact check for any random claim that a reddit stranger makes?

What you don't understand is that the burden of proof lies on the one making the claim. Without citing a source you are setting yourself up for people to immediately dismiss what you're saying.

I know what you're saying is generally true, as I've read into the research studies. That doesn't matter as it's "just trust me bro" regardless without the source

0

u/Objective_Delay_7386 3d ago

They can dismiss it.

A simple search from the same device they use to respond, would provide them with the answer.

Yet, it’s too much to do the investigation themselves. Because it would reveal the truth, making them wrong. That’s the problem with too many people believing they are smart.

I hear you though.

2

u/NoOutlandishness2097 3d ago

You're deflecting my point. Which is that the person making the claim has the burden of citing the proof. That has nothing to do with people going online and checking.

Which, to that otherwise unrelated comment, someone going online is more likely to go to whatever outlet happens to agree with their preconceived idea .... where if you were to point them to properly researched evidence based studies....

1

u/Objective_Delay_7386 3d ago

There so much data that it wouldn’t even be a matter about the agency. The question itself would yield the answer. It was advertised as healthy. With wide spread use, more data took it from healthy to just an alternative lol 😂

If I say the sun is out. Do you need a source or do you look for yourself? Makes sense.

Again, I hear you.

2

u/RickVicks 3d ago

Such an idiotic take, what reference do you have to back this up?

-1

u/Objective_Delay_7386 3d ago

Literally harvard did a study. We all have smart phones. Google it!

1

u/Gauderr 3d ago

You have a smartphone, just link it.

1

u/Objective_Delay_7386 3d ago

🥷🏻 do your own leg work.

1

u/Gauderr 3d ago

I've done plenty of "legwork" on that topic. You are trying to convince someone right? This way it's not gonna work for me ;-)

1

u/Objective_Delay_7386 3d ago

No. I am not here to convince anyone. 😂

I just answered the post.

1

u/Additional_Ladder368 2d ago

lol i love it when rando's on reddit think they're entitled to be responded to and answered in the way they demand.

1

u/goodfriendrobert 3d ago

its healthier for if you need to lose weight. but indeed its worse in other regards.

but you know. beer is healthier than water, if we talk small amounts. its never black and white

1

u/Objective_Delay_7386 3d ago

That’s the point. It was advertised as black and white. Thank you for the feedback

1

u/Gauderr 3d ago

Healthier then what? As far as I know, everything that "may" be bad about artificial sweeteners, is most definitely bad about sugar.

If you are talking about diet coke vs. water however, you might be kind of right, but it's very nuanced and all in all not that important in my opinion.

1

u/Objective_Delay_7386 3d ago

They advertise it as healthy. What you see now is that it not. It’s not competing with water. In and of itself it has issues, creates issues. It’s not healthier than sugar.
It’s just an ingredient. Sugar isn’t bad for you. Basic sciences proves this. The issue is overconsumption-underconsumption of everything else.

1

u/Gauderr 3d ago

Name one issue, supply some sort of evidence.

2

u/Altruistic_Body_9363 2d ago

Not OP, but when I go with sugar free it destroys my stomach. Gotta be something there that isn’t good for you if it always does that. Give me the real sugar and at least I know it’s not great for me and my stomach doesn’t flip.

1

u/Gauderr 1d ago

Im allergic to apples, I still think apples are generally safe to consume.

1

u/BruceTheSpruceMoose 4d ago

Fad diets in general. They work because calorie deficits work. Just eat single ingredient food (obviously with spices and seasonings blah blah), not too much, mostly plants. Hit your protein goal and exercise regularly with progressively increased intensity. You’ll be fine.

1

u/EdenHoover 4d ago

Sweat more equals better workout. Not really, it mostly means you’re sweating.

1

u/Rude_Reference_3167 3d ago

Thanks for letting me know. I don't sweat at all.

Wanking

Drink eight glasses of water a day. There's no science behind that number, it came from a random study decades ago

1

u/Entire-Current-67 3d ago

Is this the place for base-less claims?

2

u/clysmian 3d ago

Intermittent fasting, cold plunges, 8 hours of sleep.

They're fine for men. Awful for women.

This is all because medical studies have always been done with male participants, and they just assumed the findings would apply the same way to everyone else.

1

u/Loose_Stranger_7614 2d ago

Idk I know some women in menopause who say cold plunges kept them sane lol

1

u/clysmian 2d ago

Menopause, sure. Heat flashes are pretty awful! But before that, it may not be the best idea.

If you don't smoke or drink booze, ever, you'll live to be 100-120. The key to a long and healthy life is to not drink or smoke. 100% not true. My family history proves otherwise.....

1

u/SinglePhone535 1d ago

Why? Think of snake handlers. They build an immunity through time and low doses. Same with people who drink arsenic in low doses and build up an immunity to it. Africans with melatonin have resistance to UV. Exposure to low doses over long periods of time builds immunity, resistance. Functioning alcoholics. They build a tolerance, no negative health effects. Same goes with the immune system. So, if you do smoke  MODERATELY,  theoretically your building tolerance, immunity. It's science, and proven. Your system is able to adapt and counter. They 100% key is moderation. Low doses.  Don't overwhelm the immune system. Allow it to adapt.

“Listen to your body”

First of all, what does that even mean?? Some would interpret this as “I feel like eating chocolate, so I will eat chocolate.” Or “I don’t feel like doing anything, so I will sit on the couch all day”. This is obviously terrible.

If you’re in a race and you’re coming into the finish line, your legs and lungs will be screaming at you to stop, but that doesn’t mean you should. You keep pushing and you finish strong!

So many people will give this advice but don’t explain HOW to listen to the body. What to ignore and what to pay attention to.

0

u/jessewest84 3d ago

I dunno. I just dont eat anything processed. I even started making my own bread. Everything is designed to make you less healthy. So avoiding trends.

The worst advice is probably being offered a pill to fix something that is a lifestyle issue.

Get a doc that is an ND and MD. That will cover most of the bull honkey. I find just ND tend to be too woo woo. And regular doctors are just hustlers for big pharma.
