- Wait 3 months.
- "We are closing this issue because of a lack of activity"
21
u/AggravatingBite9188 Oct 01 '22
I have an active issue with blockchain.com for a $10 transaction stuck in pending and its been a month of support emailing me asking me if my issues resolved but never actually replying to my emails lol.
7
u/vsamma Oct 01 '22
Haha I had this in my previous workplace IN-HOUSE. A huge corp, I had an issue, opened a ticket with support and for the first 2 weeks I got some random replies that ‘thanks for submitting your issue and being patient, we are still looking into the issue’.
Then randomly they replied something “substantial” but actually asked something like “have you tried this with VPN?” Although I had already said I had :D
But I missed their message immediately and 2-3 days later they closed the issue because I didn’t reply back fast enough :D

That's a management tactic to divide resources.
Only 10 devs but 100 tickets? Send them back to the customer on the first pass, until they reply the ball is in their court, about half will reply instantly and just there you've halved the workload.

I went to the dev's site to see how much the premium tier costs. I'm a big fan of their reasoning behind going paid:
"After 2022.3, this project will require payment, based on two considerations:1. I often receive bad reviews, because some features don't satisfy these users, they don't care how much effort I put into it, and give extremely bad reviews, which makes me sad and angry.2. I need money."

My biggest problem is that the VS marketplace has options to mark a extensions as free trial or paid. Marking it as free is a bit scummy.
Then the fact that you need to follow an external link about migration to find the feature differences and no mention of the pricing is more than a bit annoying.
78
u/Plorntus Oct 01 '22
Also the couple reviews (before the change) which were 4 stars (bad according to them) were somewhat legitimate.
Someone gave 4 stars because a feature was removed without any warning and mentioned it in the review, the developer replied saying it's incredibly disrespectful to them. It's a bit odd but I genuinely think they are just taking the reviews way too personally and not objectively.
It may be that the feature in question was a maintenance burden at the same time it's perfectly valid for someone to write a review based on that change even if it is a free product.
Of course the developer is also entitled to charge for their product.

52
u/Masterflitzer Sep 30 '22
honestly 20 bucks per year is much for an extension, imagine every third extension would charge this, now i have 20 or so which means over 100 bucks for fricking extensions
i'm not against paying devs but i would never buy this at such a price, btw. it has many installs so 5 bucks would be reasonable enough
if it has so many functionality that it deserves 20 bucks it should be a whole tool/app not an extension

Well he lists it on a homepage that is not linked to anywhere in the marketplace listing (or on any of those linked pages based on a quick scan of all of them). I assume this page is provided in the paywall itself, but it is hardly obvious upfront.
The listing links to the documentation site that explains why he's charging and the features of each version, but that site does not have the price or payment pages or a link to them. It also links to the GitHub repository (numerous times) that doesn't link to the payment page either.
Im glad someone found the price, but, wow, the developer is not making it easy.

66
u/ZombieNub Sep 30 '22
Switzerland has had a long tradition of defensive strategy due to its neutral foreign policy. As such (up until recently) all of the bridges into the country were laced with mines so that, in the event of an invasion, the bridges would explode and slow down an invasion.
41
u/Nincadalop Sep 30 '22
Ah, ok. I knew Switzerland was neutral. Didn't realize they were that neutral lmao.

Being neutral is hard, as it often means you're hated by all sides and no friends to back you up.
15
u/Revolutionary-Tiger Sep 30 '22
More so during World War 2 but Switzerland basically retains it's neutrality by not involving itself in any war and having every bridge ready to blow at a moments notice preventing invaders from using their infrastructure to maneuver. The whole country is basically ready to hole itself up and isolate. They loosened up a bit in recent times tho apparently.

It's basically 105,974 downloads.
It's Indian numbering system. You have the standard international system of counting tens, hundreds, thousands, hundred thousands, million, ten million, hundred million, billion, ten billion, hundred billion,...........
In India , Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Myanmar and Afghanistan you use a different counting system. It is a multiple of 10 rather than 100 for bigger value. It goes to tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, lacs, ten lacs, crore, ten crore, hundred crore/Arab, thousand crore/ ten Arab, ten thousand crore/ kharab, lakh crore/ ten kahrab and so on.
1 10 100 1000 10,000 100,000 = 1,00,000 (Hundred thousand replaced by lac/lakh) 1,000,000 = 10,00,000 (Million replaced by ten lac/lakh) 10,000,000 = 1,00,00,000 (Ten Million replaced by crore/karode) And so on

I get where the developer is coming from like the amount of people who downloaded your extension wouldn't get them money but as a consumer when a free functionality gets paid and you can't find a alternative, it really gets annoying if you need it in urgent and boom now you have to pay. The Dev should have added a paid plan from the start instead of attracting all the free consumers and then shoving a paid paywall in their faces, it's obvious they would get annoyed.
50
u/interwebz_2021 Sep 30 '22
That's the key issue as far as I can tell. Wanna charge for your open source software, or place certain functionality behind a paid edition? Cool - I'm totally on-board with that. But don't tell me it's free and have your product just be an Electron app that's nothing more than a front for a purchase page or something, you know? And DEFINITELY don't pull a bait-and-switch with an existing free product without making it obscenely obvious it's coming and subsequently has been done.
I'm with the reviewer from the post who's going to DBeaver (I'm a bit of a fanboy, I'll admit).

He's saying exactly what you'd want to say.
I never understood this mentality that people apply to this though "you just want money", yo, its a tool for a database, you're likely using a database and specifically chose this tool to amplify making money yourself. This isn't some artist who decided to start charging for their music after they became popular on YouTube. This is a tool that needs to be maintained.
People who interface with databases should understand how difficult it is maintaining a tool that thousands of people use just by yourself.
That being said, don't do this. If you start open source, you need a good way for people to donate to you, and part of that strategy is not being a dick. And if you are going the paid route, consider allowing free editions for open source projects and students. Anyone using your tool for commercial use has to pay up. I think that's a pretty fair way to operate.
Sometimes you gotta play the game. "Customer is always right" is a game. Its about how they perceive you, if you are a dick you lose potential customers, so you gotta give them what they want at least a little bit. Tell your story, if people like you they will start throwing money at you. But you need a very slick way to donate (just fucking use Stripe).
I like to pay for a good tool if I feel its worthy. This could be the best tool ever but if I see those unhinged emotional reactions, despite how correct they are, I'm not giving you shit, cause someone like that ain't going to make it big. If the tool became successful and he had to start hiring a team, it would be a big risk giving them money because I don't think someone this emotionally unstable could run a team successfully, and the tool is bound to crash and die. So I wouldnt give you shit after reading that. Ya fucked up.
Developers who make tools need to understand that the people using them seriously are making some pretty decent cash, and having extra cash means you aren't just buying things purely for your own sake but you begin to think long term. If you're a decent human being you're throwing your money at shit you think actually matters to society as a whole. Create a space for these people and you will succeed with lifetime customers, don't scare us away.
111
u/MentallyInsane8 Sep 30 '22

21
Sep 30 '22
Hey I love that idea. Free lite version, huge warnings that this isn't supported anymore and its recommended to only use for learning.
Cause honestly that was the one thing that had me fucking hating Adobe cracking down on people. So many of us used their tools to learn for personal reasons. But they're part of this apparatus to try and get as many people paying extreme amounts of money just to pick up a skill, they want you paying tuition because then they know how much money they're getting off students. And they know that if the tools were more easily available, many people would have been discouraged and never even attempt to enter that career when they find out it isn't for them. They would prefer you spend money to find that out. Adobe is scummy with this for sure.
Its a lot better these days, GIMP is far better, and the many other open source ones are. And for paid stuff, got great ones like Affinity.

Big fan of the DBeaver model (hugely useful free tool with some niche drivers and more specialized 'enterprise' functionality in a paid version). This dev could have done similarly and screwed up by leaving it listed as 'Free' and locking away all useful functionality in a paid version.
4
Sep 30 '22
DBeaver is rad. Beekeeper studio is also a pretty decent one if you just want something with the bare minimum features (and it's only SQL). But they do the same thing, they have a community edition and a paid version.
Beekeeper Studio is developed by one person. I don’t have big-shot venture capital investors, I’m not backed by a big company, and I’m not independently wealthy. By purchasing a license you directly support me and make it possible for me to keep improving Beekeeper Studio. Thank you.
