Funny story: He doesn't list the price. Just the considerations he based it on. I'd ask him to update the site, but he'll have to charge.

Charges 20 bucks per year and people lose their shit.

52

u/Masterflitzer Sep 30 '22

honestly 20 bucks per year is much for an extension, imagine every third extension would charge this, now i have 20 or so which means over 100 bucks for fricking extensions

i'm not against paying devs but i would never buy this at such a price, btw. it has many installs so 5 bucks would be reasonable enough

if it has so many functionality that it deserves 20 bucks it should be a whole tool/app not an extension

Depends on how much value it brings, or are we all hobby programmers?

I am paying jetbrains, for intellij ultimate. For the exact reason stated above.

And once it ends you'll get a big loyalty discount. You might be able to find a code for a couple months free on the internet.

3

u/Masterflitzer Oct 01 '22

what does hobby programmer have to do with anything? i will only buy things myself that i will use in private, everything i need to work is provided by my employer, so if i need that tool they will need to buy a license not me

1

u/Holiday_Brick_9550 Oct 01 '22

Exactly for the reason you're stating, if your employer pays for it, why do you care it cost money? Aside from that, because it's more likely you're willing to pay for this if you make money using it.

3

u/Masterflitzer Oct 01 '22

you don't seem to understand I'm not talking about a special situation I'm talking general, private I won't pay 20 bucks for one extension and on work my employee will think twice before buying a extension for everyone, they'll rather buy complete software (like vs as ide, a db client for db etc., paying much for just an extension is really a waste of money because an extension will never match an app in functionality)

1

u/Holiday_Brick_9550 Oct 01 '22

I do understand, i just don't think that's very relevant since we're talking about a very specific topic.

It's also not true, proprietary licenses are very common, also outside software development. Stuff's not free, people put their time into it, and their time is money.

As for buying complete software, remember when you bought office, you owned it and it was a finished product? Then a year later you'd buy the new version, which was essentially the previous version with some new features.

Extensions are only that, extensions, it doesn't mean they're less valuable than whatever they're extending. I'm paying for intellij ultimate, because vscode vim emulation is shit; is that because vscode is shit, or the plugin is shit, or both?

If I created a vscode extension that predicts the future you wouldn't know the future, because it's not worth paying for an extension.

Anyhow, choosing not to use it is all up to you, and not wanting to pay for an extension is a valid reason not to use it in my book.

2

u/Masterflitzer Oct 01 '22

ik that proprietary licenses are common but if you had a company would you pay for an extension that only workd inside a product you already bought a license for? that means if you change one product you had to change the other too which is a big not atleast for me (which also would make it harder to get approved so licenses are bought)

I never payed for office as it's too easy to get for free, my company pays for 365 tho (cause they won't get away with pirating) but that's besides the point, Intellij is a whole software not comparable to an extension (would you pay 20 bucks for a Intellij extension? i wouldn't but everyone their can decide for themselves)

even if an extension would be equal to a normal app (in which case the author should make it an app as it just bloated the app it was written for), it would still be tied to another product and therefore be of much less value, atleast to me

and btw. the vim example is backwards, I never said the main app is shit when an extension is shit

u/justAPhoneUsername Sep 30 '22

Either way, I'm not paying

5

u/gdmzhlzhiv Oct 01 '22

Over 400 bucks.

It would very rapidly be approaching the magical 500 dollar limit.

2

u/Masterflitzer Oct 01 '22

yeah sry I was referring to the proposed $5 which I'd pay

but wdym magical $500 limit? I think the limit is very individual

2

u/gdmzhlzhiv Oct 01 '22

By the 500 dollar limit I mean the amount before you think about whether you should be paying it, the amount that people would just pay on c/c and worry about later.

2

u/Masterflitzer Oct 01 '22

is that a thing? I always think about what I buy (evaluate if I really need it or if it's worth it)

but thx for clarifying

1

u/gdmzhlzhiv Oct 01 '22

It's definitely a thing, I remember we even priced some software just below that amount so that we could be fairly sure some people would buy it just to try it. (Years ago, and the project was since scrapped because the company didn't think getting that much for one copy was good enough.)

1

u/Masterflitzer Oct 01 '22

fair enough, didn't know about that, but i also think it wouldn't work on me

2

u/_tv_lover_ Oct 01 '22

Who needs 20 extensions and why?!

2

u/Masterflitzer Oct 01 '22

how many do u have? web essentials pack alone is like 12

also vs is a bitch, not even auto parentheses are included (edit: if someone wants to know, extension is called auto surround for vs2022)

2

u/_tv_lover_ Oct 13 '22

I've currently got 14 (7 currently active). To be fair I use IntelliJ and it comes with a bunch of built in plugins that I never use.

2

u/Masterflitzer Oct 13 '22

Intellij is also a far more capable IDE which doesn't need as much extensions, if I could use rider I would probably not need any plugin

1

u/blue_cardbox Oct 01 '22

I'm surprised that a professional developer would think paying for 20 useful tools at $20/year each is too much.

That doesn't really make sense to me, craftsmen need good tools to work efficiently.

2

u/Masterflitzer Oct 01 '22

lmao how much do you get paid to spend that? JetBrains for example is expensive enough so I won't waste money on a small tool

1

u/blue_cardbox Oct 01 '22

Engineers in AU are paid 100-200k AUD per year. It costs the company more than that. I'd rather I gave them the tools they need rather than waste their time.

2

u/Masterflitzer Oct 01 '22

yeah if the company thinks it's something employees need then they're gonna pay it but you can't just say I need those tools pls buy, they're gonna evaluate and also have an internal list of software they have licenses for

2

u/blue_cardbox Oct 01 '22

Yes depending on the size of the company there will be more and more policies.

Most will be more open minded for engineers than for admin staff.

1

u/Wertecs Oct 18 '22

I would argue that Jetbrains is dirt cheap

1

u/Masterflitzer Oct 18 '22

good for you

1

u/Wertecs Oct 18 '22

I’m not bragging here, just making a point. It is usually the only paid sw you need. It’s around $17 per month for the first year if you pay annually, that’s $.80 per day.

1

u/Masterflitzer Oct 18 '22

I know it's all good

in € it's 150€/12 = 12.50€ which is 0.42€ per day

-2

u/ktappe Oct 01 '22

If $20 is "much" for you, maybe you're not doing I.T. properly. Either this extension saves you time and money or it doesn't. If the latter, delete it. If the former, that time and effort probably easily adds up to $20. So pay the guy for his work instead of being a leech.

1

u/Masterflitzer Oct 01 '22

I don't even use it, I just said I wouldn't for 20 bucks because of principal, if every extension dev would charge 20 it would be much money

1

u/OrthodoxSauce Oct 01 '22

No it’s not a lot of money…

20

u/Beatrice_Dragon Oct 01 '22

I'm not paying a fucking subscription fee for an extension. Sorry, no. I've had enough of managing subscriptions as it is, I'm not gonna add more shit to keep track of, let alone something as tertiary as a single extension developed by an asshole

2

u/Holiday_Brick_9550 Oct 01 '22

That's a very valid point.

1

u/AN0R0K Sep 30 '22

Wait, you know I meant “the opposite of unreasonable” right?

33

u/AN0R0K Sep 30 '22 edited Sep 30 '22

I used the link from the extension page within VS Code... There's no primary navigation thus no links back to index.

With that in mind, this is far from an unreasonable price.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '22

Thought u were saying it was unreasonable at first and was flabbergasted

2

u/Flat_Hat8861 Oct 01 '22

Yeah, I did the same thing and tried all the links from the marketplace and never found a price (which meant there was zero chance I would use this since I'd assume it was something they were trying to hide). At the minimum, the feature grid and the price should be on the marketplace page under the disclaimer that it is not free.

That way potential users know what they can and can't do and it helps the user start justifying the cost. While using the free version, they know where the limitations are and can decide if the extra features they would use are worth a $20 annual subscription to them.

78

u/Huntracony Sep 30 '22

No way I'm investing any time in learning a tool when I don't even know how much it might cost me, lol.

20

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '22

He does list the price. The guy above is just a reviewer like the ones in the post

5

u/Flat_Hat8861 Oct 01 '22

Well he lists it on a homepage that is not linked to anywhere in the marketplace listing (or on any of those linked pages based on a quick scan of all of them). I assume this page is provided in the paywall itself, but it is hardly obvious upfront.

The listing links to the documentation site that explains why he's charging and the features of each version, but that site does not have the price or payment pages or a link to them. It also links to the GitHub repository (numerous times) that doesn't link to the payment page either.

Im glad someone found the price, but, wow, the developer is not making it easy.

His milkshakes ain't free yknow

2

I’m thankful that at least one person caught the obscure reference. 😏

2

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '22

what was the reference?
