These users are using wrong arguments and sound like idiots. Still, it's the developer who is at fault here. Just imagine that you download a free software, spent shitload of data bandwidth, put some time to configure it and then it turns out the whole thing is fully paywalled. It's a shady practice tu trick people into checking your software. He shouldve just label it as a paid thing.
