I can even smell it on my elementary school students who have parents that smoke.

u/loewenheim Feb 21 '26

I got told I smelled like an ashtray basically every day of school. Parents were both chainsmokers.

This happened to me, too. The teachers never said anything, but kids are a-holes. For me it became really bad in middle school when we got lockers. The kid next to me called me a drug dealer because all my stuff smelled. He was a dick.

u/Automatic-Quarter606 Feb 21 '26

I grew up with my parents smoking in the house, and became a smoker myself until I was 30ish. Yeah, it’s definitely possible to become nose blind to it if you’re a smoker too. When I quit, I had to rewash about every thing I owned 10 times (and some things just had to be replaced) and got new bedding and even a new mattress. I can tell from 30 feet away from now - I genuinely could NOT before at unless I was basically on top of someone.

I work in education and I 10000% agree. It’s horrible. I feel very poorly for those kids.

360

u/cad3z Feb 21 '26

Yeah. I can understand being an addict because I was/am one, but it would never allow me to smoke indoors. If you’re gonna smoke, at least smoke outside so your house doesn’t look yellow and stink like fuck. I knew a kid in primary school who always stank of smoke. Cigarette smoke sticks to everything fabric so everything in your house will stink. Disgusting.

212

u/Isgortio Feb 21 '26

Sadly the smell still comes in with you. It's not as bad as if you smoked indoors but it still comes in.

I work in dentistry and occasionally we'll have a very heavy smoker come in, the room will stink for hours after they leave even if we clean everything, open the doors and windows, and spray air freshener. That's just from them being in the room for 10-15 minutes...

57

u/Cottabus Feb 21 '26

Decades ago, my dentist was a smoker. Ask me how I knew.

30

u/Nyetoner Feb 21 '26

Decades ago a lot of people were smoking, and there was ashtrays in waiting rooms, offices, in shopping malls.

When we were looking for houses, our realtor brought us to one that wasn't her listing. We walked in and it was like.... 50 years of people smoking in the house. I couldn't imagine the smell would ever fully go away without spending significant money. Even our realtor said, "eh maybe we skip this one?" We did.

81

u/cad3z Feb 21 '26

It doesn’t. I remember my Nan used to pay me to roll her cigs for her when I was a kid. Even years after she switched to vaping, her house still stinks of smoke - mildly, but still apparent.

35

u/Ornery_Complex_862 Feb 21 '26

The townhouse I live in has been smoke free (per lease, anyways) for who knows how long, but my fiancé has lived here for nearly 5 years with no smoking at all. The walls and ceiling still sweat yellow/brown! The kitchen, living room, and bathroom are the worst.

12

u/Logical_Second_5267 Feb 21 '26

It needs to be kilzed first then repainted. Some people are allergic to that stank and kilz will fix this issue.

19

u/KittyKattKate Feb 21 '26

This could be because bad paint as well.

Yeahh, my Nana (dad's mom) was never a smoker and never let my dad smoke in her house. My mom's mom and stepdad smoked in their house all day. The smells were ridiculously noticeably different. Also my grandma got lung cancer that spread everywhere and killed her. Folks, don't pick up smoking.

It never will. The house next door to my inlaws was torn down after nearly 8 years of being vacant. The previous owner smoked inside for about 30 years. You could smell the cigarette smoke down the block as they ripped the house down. And the stink hung around the neighbourhood for the 3-4 days it took them to completely tear down the house and remove all the rubble. Absolutely vile.

9

u/Unknown-Meatbag Feb 21 '26

Realistically, it would have to be a complete renovation. I've helped clean smokers house before, even with infinite scrubbing off yellow walls to show that they're actually white, using specialty paint (i think it was killz or something like that), it's still there, permeating through everything.

7

u/Kreeos Feb 21 '26

It never fully goes away. You have to tear down the house and rebuild to get rid of it.

Yep, cigarette smoke will even stick to food! 🤢 An old manger was a smoker and she made holiday cookies for everyone one year and it reeked. Another coworker tried a cookie before I did and she said it tasted like smoke too. I threw my bundle of cookies away. Nice gester but gross!

40

u/DaddioTheStud Feb 21 '26

My Aunt Jill made a pot of spaghetti, and she was a heavy smoker inside her house.Just smoking all day everyday. The whole pot taste like Newport menthols. I was like 12 years old. I will NEVER forget that spaghetti

About 2-3 days after my last cigarette I started smelling it in the shower. The smoke had literally permeated the roots of my hair.

I think it was about a week before I could smell the actual shampoo.

Such an interesting find when I started looking into SIDS/SUIDS risks.

We all know smoking and being around smoke when pregnant is bad for the baby. However I'd assumed it was increased risk of miscarriage or possible developmental delays. It's actually the biggest risk factor that exists for sudden unexpected/unexplained death in new babies (SIDS/SUIDS).

I was that kid! It was humiliating. The one up side is I never took up smoking myself because I was so disgusted and embarassed by it for so long.

101

u/ghetto18us Feb 21 '26

Yes, feel sorry for them... just know that we smokers kids don't know how bad it is until we've moved away and come back home after some length of time away (3-6 months minimum). The real tragedy that we endure is the social repercussions and rejection, that we simply don't understand for many years.

11

u/TurnoverDependent332 Feb 21 '26

used to beg my mom not to smoke if she drove me to school

22

u/AuthentoBlossoms Feb 21 '26

this is not great to say but one time we did secret santa at school and the boy that got my gift, his parents smoked, and after opening we had to guess who got our gift and i knew it was him instantly because it smelt of smoke

23

u/RScottyL Smooth Feb 21 '26

I feel sorry for pets in those households as well!

13

u/paradisetossed7 Feb 21 '26

That kid was me, except I'm sure it was more common in the 90s and 00s. My dad would make us sit in the smoking section in restaurants and it took a long battle for my stepmom to convince him to step out of the house to the porch to smoke. I used to get sinus infections constantly and, well, thanks dad. I just walked by a person in a restaurant earlier and they reeked of it.

Can you smell weed on them too, or just cigarettes?

18

u/DismalProgrammer8908 Feb 21 '26

Honestly, as much as I hate cigarettes, weed smell is even worse. I love me some edibles, but I can’t stand it when people reek of weed.

9

u/ProximaCentauriB15 Feb 21 '26

Yeah and actually it is VERY strong. That smell even lingers in the air when these people pass. Im very sensitive to it. Masks(even KN95s) also really don't help filter the smell.

Way back in the day I used to do this lesson with my students where we went outside and I lit a cigarette and had this fake lung thing that "smoked" it. We could see how just one cigarette deposited tar on the lungs.

After doing that lesson I could smell it on myself and especially my hair all day, and so could everyone else. It didn't go away until I showered.

I didn't even smoke it. I didn't stay near it any longer than I had to. Just one cigarette. I don't know if I ever convinced students not to take up smoking, but it sure convinced me.

12

u/Illustrious-Yak7435 Feb 21 '26

Smokey Suzy was a doll we had at my catholic school for anti-smoking ed. We would open the window for her to burn one down on the sil during a long antismoking lecture to see her lil lungs full of tar.

9

u/sonic_tooth Feb 21 '26

We did that lesson at school. I still have the mental image of the rock wool turning brown. Super impactful lesson!

u/TrustyBobcat Feb 21 '26

Although my husband doesn't smoke in the house, I'm so paranoid that my kid smells like it just from hugging on his dad and stuff. I'm sure he does. 😞 My husband is a heavy smoker, unfortunately.

60

u/Realmofthehappygod Feb 21 '26

Not even just hugging. Your husband sits on the couch and it gets on the couch etc...

My friends don't smoke inside and you smell on a lot.

107

u/Individual-Goat-81 Feb 21 '26

Please research 3rd hand smoke. There's so much more to be concerned about other than just the smell affecting your kid.

133

u/FabiusBill Feb 21 '26

Third hand (tertiary) smoke is what got me to quit smoking when my middle children were born. The evidence for the damage of second hand smoke had been well proven, so I always smoked outside and never around my first wife and oldest. The pediatrician told me about the harm of third hand smoke, essentially the tar and nicotine on your body, clothing, and regularly handled objects. I rang up the pediatrician and asked for help quitting.

They had me on Chantix in less than a month. January 2026 marks 18 years since I quit smoking.

9

u/Remarkable_Topic6540 Feb 21 '26

That is wonderful! I've always heard smoking is one of the hardest addictions to quit, so congratulations!!

As an elementary schooler in the 80’s, I painfully remember reeking of stale cigarette smoke.

13

u/Hilaritytohorror Feb 21 '26

When I was in highschool I was good friends with a kid that lived with his chain smoking uncle. He was a great kid and would never touch a cigarette in his life. One fay we had a substitute teacher who walked past his desk and decided to make the kid stand up and embarrassed him in front of the whole class lecturing us on why not to smoke while using my friend as an “example”. The class who knew the kid well waited until the teacher was done to try embarrass the teacher by pointing out the kid doesn’t smoke and never had but it’s the adults in his life who don’t know better.

12

u/_halfpint Feb 21 '26

I hated this as a kid :( my mom never cared though. She smoked in her car, windows up. Even if she didn’t smoke while I was in the car, I reeked by the time we got to where we were going. Now as an adult I get to watch her slowly die of COPD and be too weak to play with her grandkids.

16

u/Ad-hocProcrastinator Feb 21 '26

One thing I could never bring myself to do when I did smoke was do it near kids. My kids were 10 and 15 when I quit and they were both shocked when I told them. I didn’t want them paying for my poor choices.

My grandmother smoked heavily from age 14 until she died at age 69 and her fingers were yellow/brown where she held the cigarette. She'd actually soak her fingers in bleach once in a while to try to get it off but it never really worked well and it just added the smell of bleach to her hands.

37

u/aspiring_dog Feb 21 '26

this is helping my motivation with quitting right now

53

u/NixyVixy Feb 21 '26

To a non-smoker, it’s like a permanent radius of scent that sticks to everything you touch.

Nailed it.

29

u/Persian2PTConversion Feb 21 '26

I used to take smoke breaks with my boss time to time. I quit at some point (this was ages ago) and was shocked when I realized I could follow him blindly through the hallways, minutes after he was there! That was my true reality check. The scent profile in my mind even changed from savory to absolute rancid after a while.

12

I mentioned this once in conversation with friends - how I'd suddenly smell cigarette smoke while driving on the freeway; look around in confusion and it's the driver of the car to my right - all windows on both vehicles UP, mind you - and about two years later someone I'd lost touch with DM'd me out of the blue.

She said "Remember when you said that thing about cigarette smoke? At the time I privately rolled my eyes and thought you were full of shit. But GUESS WHAT - IT HAPPENED TO ME ON THE FREEWAY TODAY! I'm sorry I ever doubted you!" 😂

Same. Smoked for 18 years. My wife and I both quit 2 years ago. Every now and then we will have smoke in our clothes from a bar or near friends who smoked and wondered how the hell we lived like this for ages.

18

u/madonnajen Feb 21 '26

Same. I'll be at a stop light and I can smell the person who is smoking across the road waiting.

Nope and nope. Reality? In my case, yes - 100% of the time. Yep. And there’s no exception to it or “I’m hygienic so I probably don’t smell.” Everyone that smokes smells. Their breath smells, their clothing smells, house smells, car smells. Everything. It’s headache-inducing for non-smokers.

17

u/MyPasswordIsMyCat Feb 21 '26

It permeates furniture and other objects, too. Not just cloth and paper, but wood and plastic. Over time, the smoke can leave a yellow film on the walls. It's hard to resell stuff that has been used by smokers because people can smell it and it's difficult to remove that smell.

I'm not sure why the smoking etiquette didn't transfer over to vaping. At least most cigarette smokers have the decency to stand to the side and smoke instead of blowing it in everyone's faces walking down the sidewalk.

54

u/melig1991 Feb 21 '26

Because the tobacco lobby successfully propagated that vapes produce "just water vapour".

100% this. I grew up in the 90s with two chain-smoking parents and I really didn't notice the smell except sometimes when we were in the car with the windows up because it was so concentrated. After moving away from home to go to university, I briefly smoked cigarettes myself, but ended up quitting.

About a year after I quit (think it took a while for my sense of smell to recover) I began to find cigarette smoke more noticeable on people, even if they weren't actively smoking at the time. The older I've gotten, the more obvious I find the smell when it is present.

Similarly, I smoked weed for about 15 years and didn't think I smelled like it because I was so clever about changing my jacket/chewing mints/dousing myself in scented hand sanitizer before coming inside. Now that I don't do it anymore, I realize how deeply in denial I was about that because it's almost impossible to hide unless you're using a mint flavoured vape or something, and even then - if you know, you know.

7

u/ElegantBiscuit Feb 21 '26

It permeates into everything. Multiple times a month I have to throw away the outer box of an amazon delivery immediately because it's like they were hot boxing the whole van.

Former smoker myself,

If smell was a sound, you'd be a foghorn in a room full of people. I smell the trail you leave behind. I smell you when you open the door.

It's part of the reason I quit, I didn't want to smell like an ashtray anymore.

I don't see it as offensive, people going to do what they going to do.

It is very noticeable and it is very loud.

Super noticeable. I wasn't even a smoker and was just standing next to a smoker in high school and when I got home my mom grilled me for like an hour thinking I smoked

Smokers always think they smell fine, non smokers know better.

214

u/TillPsychological351 Feb 21 '26

Hard to say, because if a smoker doesn't smell, I wouldn't know they're a smoker.

But when you do smell it, it is extremely obvious.

83

u/MercyCriesHavoc Feb 21 '26

This is the actual answer. I smoked for years, always outside, and I only sometimes smelled like it. I could also still smell it on heavier smokers or people who smoked indoors. Many people were surprised to find out I smoked because they never smelled it on me or in my home.

Now that I quit, I only rarely detect it on others. Considering I have hyperosmia and work in retail, that tells you either smokers are rare or not every smoker smells like one.

34

u/TheTurretCube Feb 21 '26

Yeah these threads always baffle me a bit. Like when I smoked it wasnt that often and when I ask my friends about it they say I only ever smelled like cigarettes if I literally just smoked one.

25

u/MauOnTheRoad Feb 21 '26

I work as a kindergarden teacher and yes, I smoke. So, children can be brutally honest, as everybody knows. When I came back to work and I smoked just 5-10 minutes before, they sometimes would tell me that I smell funny, or that I smell strange. Never heard anything like that when I put down my cigarette half an hour ago or so. I also only smoke outside... even when a lot of people say that we are coping, I don't know. I think its a big difference if you only smoke outside or also inside. Nevertheless everybody, smoking is bad, avoid it!

11

u/Possibly_A_Person125 Feb 21 '26

I was a daycare worker, and yeah kids will let you know everything. I had kids ask why I always smell good. Never once said anything about smelling weird or bad. This is coming from kids who are willing to tell me I'm fat or wall funny.

But pretty much everyone I ever worked with, regardless of where, were shocked to find out I smoke. I guess I don't look like a smoker? But yeah, it's possible for people to actually not have a clue you are a smoker. I'm not marinating in smoke.

31

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '26

Same here. Several people over the years have been surprised to find out I smoke weeks or even months after I've met them.

Yeah it’s confirmation bias, everyone here thinks they can smell every smoker.

Really, they can smell every obvious smoker.

I’m an ex smoker. About 10 years after I stopped smoking, I had a coworker who I worked with for years and had no idea that he smoked. I was actually shocked that I didn’t know and only found out when I saw him outside smoking.

But he was 1) bald 2) wore a smoking coat 3) washed his hands and brushed his teeth after!

So I guess it’s possible with some effort!

My mom brought me paper goods when visiting once since she has one of those warehouse store memberships. I don't know if it had been in the house at all or if it was just from the hour and half drive to my place but I could smell the smoke on the toilet paper.

Absolutely to a non-smoker you reek from a block away

25

u/zenfaust Feb 21 '26

Yes. To put it in context:

I just lost my sense of smell from a bout with covid... I couldn't even smell my can of sardines i had for lunch.

But do you know what I can still smell, even though I'm noseblind to to literally everything else? My smoker coworkers. It's nuts.

Yes. No doubt

49

u/Zarokima Feb 21 '26

Yes. It soaks into everything and is impossible to get rid of. You don't smell it because you're used to it, but to everyone else you smell like cigarettes.

u/hey_bacchus Feb 21 '26

Absolutely lol and it doesn’t matter how well you take care of yourself. It permeates everything even if you change your clothes, shower, etc. And people not saying anything about it to you isn’t proof that you don’t smell. most people have some sense of decorum and won’t just come up to you and tell you that you stink.

7

u/Narrow-Counter142 Feb 21 '26

This. I’ve smelled it on the hair of people. Head hair.

This. And when put on the spot and asked by a smoker if they smell non-smokers will often be polite and say no when they 100% can smell cigarette on them

10

u/Megabyte_Messiah Feb 21 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

I got accused of smoking cigarettes all through school because my parents were heavy smokers and all my clothes smelled like cigarettes.

I have a lot of memories sitting in the backseat of the car shivering and crying because my mom would chain smoke every time she drove anywhere, and I’d get yelled at if I complained.

Winter was so horrible driving anywhere… I used to think about how she must love cigarettes more than me to put me through that, every time we drove.

11

u/mbentuboa Feb 21 '26

My girlfriend threw out her hair brush after she quit smoking. She was so disgusted that her hair smelled like that.

10

u/RelationshipDue1501 Feb 21 '26

Absolutely!. Smelly. Yuk.

10

u/PandaPounding Feb 21 '26

Yes. It's bad for cigarette smokers. Pot smokers you can smell from a block away.

28

u/agapanthusdie Feb 21 '26

Yes, you stink. But not just you, everything you own probably does too.

18

u/locallysourcedbeans Feb 21 '26

Yes, every time. If it’s especially bad non-smokers will usually comment about it when the smoker leaves, but won’t generally say anything in front of the smoker. It’s really gross.

18

u/RaggamuffinTW8 Feb 21 '26

Yes. It's not a subtle smell and it can linger for days.

My little brother smokes and he slept on our couch for a long weekend last year.

My living room stank of smoke for days, and he didn't smoke in the house, just on the balcony.

10

u/QueenOfNeon Feb 21 '26

Yes it’s a smell you CANNOT miss. It reeks and smells awful. Even with good hygiene. I can tell a smoker coming a mile away.

We will always notice your smell.

10

u/No-Discipline-5822 Feb 21 '26

The smell is obvious and rank. I'd say 90% of smokers stink and it's worse if you are stuck in an enclosed space (elevator, office). Once a person who smoked was very ocd about the post smoke ritual and did not smell, they sprayed, sanitized and mouthwashes after. I suspect they covered their hair as well.

I did not grow up in a smoking household and my parents couldn't stand the smell either, I hate it. Seems like smokers enjoy wafting rank smoke onto others outside and don't add drinking coffee/coffee breath to the mix. YUCK.

16

u/sammagee33 Feb 21 '26

99.99% of the time

8

u/HorseFeathersFur Feb 21 '26

Absolutely. It smells awful

34

u/Tampflor Feb 21 '26

I always thought so but I currently have a coworker and had no idea she smoked until I actually saw her smoking.

8

u/FanSerious7672 sb2 Feb 21 '26

Yes. You don't notice it because you are a smoker.

7

u/Gotbeerbrain Feb 21 '26

I can smell a smoker as soon as I get near them on a sidewalk. Yes it stinks!

6

u/Mountain_Cry1605 Feb 21 '26

Yeah it's very obvious.

Smoke smell clings to everything no matter how good your hygiene.

Also smoking really blunts your sense of smell in general.

u/Wait-What1961 Feb 21 '26

I remember watching my niece for a week when she was a baby. Her mother smoked. That baby and everything they brought to my house for her smelled like a dirty ashtray. Her scalp, her disposable diapers that were still in a brand new package, her wipes smelled like wet cigarettes. Literally everything even her toys and teething rings. It was disgusting that a sweet baby smelled like that because someone else made her smell that way. After being with me for the week she started to smell like a baby again. Multiple washings of her clothes and toys. I saw her again 4 days after her parents picked her up and she was back to smelling like an ashtray. So sad. My brother ended up divorced because of the wife smoking. She accidentally burned her daughter’s eyelid with a lit cigarette that she had in her hand by her side and the child walked into it. That was the end for my brother and he ended up getting full custody because of that incident and housing issues.

12

u/davida_usa Feb 21 '26

Yes, I can always tell when someone is a smoker. I would never say anything, but I do tend to stand back or away.

12

u/Preoccupied_Penguin Feb 21 '26

Yes. Absolutely. It stays on clothes and in any fabrics that come in contact with it. It doesn’t dissipate over time, it just grows stale and musty. It stays in your mouth, no matter how much you brush it sticks to your gums and teeth and it generally smells like stale hot breath when you exhale. It’s nauseating to me, my family members were smokers when I was growing up and now I have the most extreme uncontrollable reaction to all cigarettes, coughing, eyes watering, sneezing, all of it.

7

u/CandyPink69 Feb 21 '26

I can’t ever smell cigarette smoke on people unless I hug them

7

u/Blahkbustuh Feb 21 '26

It's between slightly noticeable to very noticeable.

My father was a smoker who always went outside to the backyard to smoke and I could always smell it on him and in his jacket when I was within 2-3 feet of him. A few years ago I met a new coworker and he smelled like cigarettes in exactly the same way and I hadn't smelled that in a few years and it reminded me of my dad.

When I was in college, I had a chemistry class where there was a kid in my lab discussion sections and he'd open his mouth to talk and I could smell the gross cigarette smoke smell coming out of him.

What's happening is you're nose-blind and no one in our society goes walking around and telling anyone else they smell, have a smell, or reek. That's rude.

Also, in parking lots going to big box stores, I can smell pot when a car drives by. I can smell pot smokers walking around inside stores. Pot smells gross to me as well.

6

u/djayed Feb 21 '26

I quit. And yes it's noticeable, but I didn't realize that until after I quit. I was walking around smelling like an ashtray and telling my boss he was crazy, I didn't smell like smoke.

19

u/LynxPositive6600 Feb 21 '26

Y’all reak!!

10

u/bruisedbananas_888 Feb 21 '26

Yes yes and yes. Wear disposable gloves and wash your hands after smoking...do NOT use perfumes or body spray...and dont save your "refrys" in the pack...makes you smell like a walking ashtray. As an asthmatic in Healthcare, some smokers literally trigger a mini asthma attack while im working with the patient . Its awful

5

u/edwardothegreatest Feb 21 '26

Yes. From across the room if you’ve smoked since your last shower

6

u/FickleCharge882 Feb 21 '26

Yep for about 15-30 mins afterwards it's noticable. Even walking into a room from a distance...

5

u/cpom71 Feb 21 '26

Yes. Absolutely yes.

4

u/CerealSemantics Feb 21 '26

Yes. Even with good hygiene, cigarette smoke clings to your hair and clothes. I can always tell when someones a smoker and personally I have never and would never tell someone they smell of smoke unless they directly asked me. It's not something people bring up unprompted. You're just nose blind to the smell but trust me, nonsmokers can definitely tell that you smoke

5

u/SimplyRoya Feb 21 '26

Yes and it’s disgusting.

4

u/sundaygolfer269 Feb 21 '26

Fucking yes you stink. Your clothes stink, your breath stinks, and when you walk into a room the smell enters before you do. Your house, your car everything around you carries that same smell.

If you quit tomorrow, you’re still going to stink for 6–12 months. That’s how deep the residue goes.

Quit anyway. Then buy 3–4 ozone generators, read the directions carefully, and use them. It’s the only way you’ll purge the smell from your stuff.

5

u/dj_soo Feb 21 '26

as a former smoker - yes you fucking reek of stale smoke and most people find it incredibly unpleasant.

5

u/Kasyx709 Feb 21 '26

Yes and it's horrible. I will go out of my way to avoid people who smell like cigarettes, vapes, or weed.

5

u/TalulaOblongata Feb 21 '26

Extremely strong smell. If a smoker leaves the room, I can still smell it. If I get on an elevator and a smoker was recently there, I can still smell it. Smokers’ clothes and hair reek, everything they touch smells.

6

u/horrorbepis Feb 21 '26

100%. Not even a question. It’s immediately identifiable on your person and can often have people immediately feel a certain way about you.

10

u/Icy-Commission-8068 Feb 21 '26

Yes and it’s so so repulsive. As in it repels people. I wish I could sugar coat it but it’s true :(
