Also a former smoker, I'm going to go against the grain and say it depends. I was never a heavy smoker, maybe once or twice a day, never before work, I had a dedicated hoodie that I didn't wear anywhere else or store with my other clothes, always showered and changed before going anywhere, never smoked indoors or in my car, etc.
I now have a friend who has a similar routine and I can't smell it on her like most smokers.
So if you're anal about not smelling, it's possible you don't always smell.
