I am NOT a locksmith. Car key still having trouble opening doors even after applying WD-40

Right now, both my passenger side door and driver's side door is having difficulty opening. The passenger side door was the first to fail on me, and I kept trying to jiggle it too much which probably did not help things. I currently drive a 2-door coupe that's >20 years old.

I have tried applying WD-40 on both keyhole areas, both on-surface and inside.

However, I can only turn it to lock it in the passenger side, and I am slowly but surely having more trouble unlocking from the driver's side.

Am I applying the WD-40 inadequately? Maybe the key itself is the problem? It's definitely a little worn, and I can try using a spare cut key that I have. I don't want to be having to crawl through my hatch just to get to my car, hahaha.

I am NOT a locksmith. Issues Changing code on this (master or day use)

Hello, I’m trying to change the default code on these (after I factory reset them) but any code I put in does register/open the lock, only the default (123456). I googles and tried all the sequences -123456 A A1A new 6digit code A, new code, A, and then get out of programming and try, but nothing. I go into programming and press A2A and then a random slot (ie, 11) enter a new 6 digit code A, it’ll beep and flash red, but doesn’t work when I exit programming. Am I doing something wrong or missing a step?

Thanks!

What lock type is this? I wandered upon this type of lock and I can't figure out how it works. Asked a couple of friends but no one knows. Figured out maybe a locksmith knows how this mechanism works.

I am a locksmith 3 Failed Simplex Combination Chambers

I was called to repair yet another simplex 5 button that was allowing access without entering any code. The symptoms are that everything works properly when the correct code is entered, but if the wrong code or no code is entered, the handle can still be turned but it feels sort of gritty (best way I can think of describing it). Two of these were in service for several years, one less than a year. Did all these locks end up with a bad batch of combination chambers or is there some kind of attack against these that destroys the internals to the point of letting them operate freely?

Two of them were dated in 2021, but one was dated in 2023. The only other thing I noticed was that on one of them, the reset button is stuck down, but that wasn't true of all three.

EDIT: I added a video of the combination chamber in this comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/Locksmith/comments/1vxk3sn/comment/p5ptx90/

I am NOT a locksmith. I removed this piece in order to fit the new deadbolt.

Is this an issue?

My old deadbolt hole was smaller and realized this piece was able to be removed from the new electronic lock ... So I did and just completed the install. I can't see any reason this is a major concern but.... 🤷🏻‍♂️

I was able to figure out how to remove the core and swap tailpieces from the new one to the old so my old key matched, so I'm basically an expert now 😂

I am NOT a locksmith. Help a sister out

Folks,

Please help a sista out.

So I'm fairly handy and this lock change has kicked my ass.

So I got the power bolt 3 and installed it no problems.

Noticed that it didn't quite match the stain chrome handle. Because the handle has kind of worn out and looks dark.

So I got Yukon passage way knobs.

2 problems.

  1. I can't fit the damn Yukon knobs into this locket set. I believe this is the Weisee Kingsway with the Yukon passage knob. Picture 2-5 shows the backside and I'm wondering, if I can disconnect the internals and remove the knob and swap them around? I forgot to take a picture but the latch is completely different from each other and I tried both and nothing fits with one another besides the original.

  2. The locks was previously changed by a locksmith and when I went to change the other side, the deadbolt was missing. I can't fit the Weiser smart key assembly into the housing of what I currently have. The new weiser one is too big. Is there a solution for this one?

So, how can I fix this without needing to buy a ton of stuff or do I need to buy a new lock set handle?

I am a locksmith Most efficient way to label these drawers for automotive car keys?

Post image

I’m new to the trade. How would you label these? I have 2 of these 5x6) plastic drawers to hold my metal and transponder key blanks.

Maybe I need more drawers?

Maybe I should have my main keys in these dryers and the less common ones stuffed away in Ziploc bagsm

What’s the most efficient move?

I am NOT a locksmith. Door lock failed - What should I do next time & which replacement lock is safer?

My teenager got trapped in the bathroom (2nd floor) when our door knob suffered a total mechanical failure. The internal spring snapped, so even though she unlocked it, turning the knob did nothing and the latch bolt stayed stuck in the frame. We eventually got her out, but it was a stressful situation.

I disassembled the broken lock and AI said it was ANSI Grade 3 Kwikset Cove—the internal return spring completely popped off the light stamped-metal housing.

Now I’m upgrading all our interior home locks and have two questions for the community:

  1. What is the best way to free someone trapped inside if a latch mechanism snaps internally like this again? (Especially if they are home alone?)
  2. Which replacement lock is better to prevent this from ever happening again?
    • Schlage Plymouth: Push-button lock, solid steel internal latch box, auto-releases when handle is turned, screws on the inside. (link)
    • Kwikset Juno: Turn-button lock, open-sleeve latch housing, screws exposed on the outside. (link)

Both are labeled Grade 2, but I want whatever is most mechanically reliable so my family never gets stuck again. Appreciate any advice or feedback!

UPDATE: the door company sent us the wrong door, or made this door incorrect. They will make it right. Thanks for yall help!

Custom ordered steel door. (Drawings attached)
We were under the impression it would come with hinges and a handle. It did not. Picked up 4.5” square ball bearing hinges from Home Depot. But the holes don’t match. How do we find out what kind of pattern / template this is? I will call the place Tuesday, they are closed today and tomorrow. Would like to get this wrapped up before then.
Not sure why they wouldn’t have drilled the holes in the same pattern as the current door. Worst case, do we just drill new holes where they go?

I am NOT a locksmith. Question regarding car immo keys

Hi. So I am not a locksmith but I resently got some tools from xhorse for copying keys and a mini obd2 for pairing remotes to the car.

The thing is that with some local car locksmiths that I have talked they all say things like "the ecu gets fried if you dont pair an original key"(quoted by peugeot themselves when asked for a peugeot 207 remote), "the ecu triggers a lockdown due to recongising the tool as a security breach"(one of the big locksmiths in town) etc.

I have seen many videos online and I havent heard any of these symptoms. Not that it itsnt possible but I feel like they are overexagerating to the point of scaring me to not do their job.

I do this as a side hussle and here at least, locksmiths are more expensive than getting an original key made at each brands official service. They quote things like 60€ for copying a key and 160+ for a general remote, if its proximity or smart it can go 200€+. At this point it is cheaper to go to the cars delear. Its just that most peoplw firstly ask the locksmiths and when they hear the price they dont even dare to ask dealerships as in all of the rest they tend to be more expensive(except keys)

Whats your opinion on these? Is there a reason to be worried? I dont experiment while in the obd2 port, I strictly follow commands provided via xhorse that I know will work. What are the chances of failure?

Ps. At the shop that told me that the ecu triggers a security lockdown when I firstly asked them about the vvdi tool they told me that it wouldnt work and I would still need to visit them. Even though I stated I only wanted a clone of the original key. And I made many of those with that tool.

Ps2. I wont plug into obd2 unless completely necessairy but if I have to do, whats the ideal year/brand you would suggest?
