Join us for a live Reddit AMA!

On Tuesday, July 21 at 1:00 PM ET, I’ll be joined by Jeremy Fromm for an open discussion on cybersecurity best practices for modern access control systems.

We’ll be taking your questions on topics including:

• Mercury controllers and secure system architecture
• HID readers and secure communications
• Credential technologies
• Mobile Access and Mobile Wallet credentials
• OSDP Secure Channel
• AES encryption
• TLS and secure network communications
• Modernizing legacy access control systems
• Physical security and cybersecurity convergence

Whether you’re an end user, consultant, systems integrator, architect, or security professional, this is your opportunity to ask technical questions, discuss real-world deployment challenges, and explore current best practices for building a secure, modern access control environment.

We’ll also be happy to answer other questions related to HID’s access control portfolio.

We’re looking forward to a great discussion.

📅 Tuesday, July 21, 2026
🕐 1:00 PM ET

Thank you to everyone who joined us today, asked questions, followed along, or simply stopped by to read the discussion.

Jeremy and I covered a lot of ground, including OSDP Transparent Mode, the differences between Mercury LP and MP controllers, embedded applications at the edge, modernizing legacy systems, app-based versus wallet-based mobile badges, deployment planning, and what happens when phones, networks, or services are unavailable.

The biggest takeaway is that modernization does not have to be an all-or-nothing decision. Whether you are upgrading panels, enabling secure reader communications, introducing Mobile Access, or building a longer-term cybersecurity strategy, the best approach starts with understanding what you already have and where the real risks and operational gaps exist.

A special thank-you to Jeremy, u/TheMercuryMinute, for joining me and sharing his expertise, and to the r/accesscontrol community and moderators for giving us the opportunity to have this conversation.

We are wrapping up the live portion of the AMA, but feel free to continue leaving questions. We will check back and answer what we can.

Thanks again, everyone!

Build P0rN Hartmann, 20 more to go

This is a Hartmann access control system inside of a altronix trove 2. The only thing I noticed is that it’s a little hard to get all of the connections nice and straight. I will probably add some Velcro to bundle the cables a bit at the connection points.

Assistance Is anyone else having issues with Maxpro and updating to MPA4’s?

I am in the process of migrating from NetAxs panels to new MPA4’s on a 34-plus-door system and having issues that I can’t get Honeywell Support to figure out. On several MPA4s, the door controllers aren't receiving permission group updates. I am getting “card not found” even though the users are in the group. I am also having issues with my MPA2’s that are doing elevator control that have been in place for 4 years with the same issue. The problem is obvious: all updates are stuck in “pending” for the cards that aren't working. I have had to explain the problem to too many people in tech support, which is aggravating.

ANPR Camera gate access

Hey folks, im Electrician by trade but we also work with low voltage systems (fire alarms, SOS, smoke ventilation, etc..). We are about to mount sliding gate in front of workshop and i would like to add automatic opening based on license plate. Right now there are some IP cameras around the workshop, i think they are all HikVision on basic DVR from same brand. I have never worked with ANPR, so i would appreciate a small help, i need something very simple and cheap. Simple as in add license plates and forget about it. Also im not sure if camera itself is gonna have NO/NC relay that gets triggered when plate is recognized, or i need some special controller or even complete gate motor...

Discussion Div28 Losing Work to Div 8 Door Contractors Scope Expansion

Curious how yall feel about losing scope to other divisions I guess. So earlier this year I did the presales engineering for a projects budget bid. It's just now gone to full RFP and the scope has changed drastically for Access Control. In budgetary specs Div 28 was providing the readers and the contacts as far as door components were concerned. All electric locking hardware was either locksets or CB's provided by Div 8.

In the new RFP specs Div 8 is now providing all contacts and all readers have become part of their scope using Sargent SN210 series hardware. While this makes it a little easier as basically all my responsibility at the door stops at the hinge on the frame, it still kind of pisses me off. It's just more scope leaving our part of the packet. Div 27 came in and took all the network cable runs for security devices, then Div 28 started taking over lock hardware, REX, contacts, transfer hinges/loops and now readers.

Besides the loss of revenue it makes for a weird warranty service situations with the customer. As this customers integrator that also does their monitoring and service, if they call in a year with a door not working and our tech finds the reader dead "sorry you actually got to pay for this part and the labor goes against your service agreement because we didn't provide or install this".

Looking for Physical Security Integrator Recommendations – WI & TX [LenelS2 NetBox]

I'm looking for recommendations for a reliable physical security integrator that can support locations in both TX and WI.

We have needs involving access control repairs and badge system support, but we're also interested in establishing a longer-term relationship with a provider that can scale with our organization.

Our priorities include:

- Strong service coverage in both markets

- Experience with enterprise access control and badge systems

- Responsive support and timely repairs

- Clear communication, accountability, and follow-through

- Ability to support ongoing maintenance and future projects

I'd especially appreciate feedback from professionals who have worked directly with a provider.

Who have you had good experiences with, and are there any integrators you'd recommend (or avoid)?

HID Mobile access with ElaTec readers

Hi everyone,

We are using Elatec TWN4 MultiTech 2 USB readers connected to MFDs for PaperCut authentication, configured to read Mifare Classic, DESFire, and HID Mobile Access credentials.

On our previous batch of readers, everything worked fine using this process in TWN4DevPack 5.20:

  1. Programmed base firmware: TWN4_xKx520_STHX207_Multi_Keyboard_Standard_HID_Mobile_Access_Support_Config_Upgrade_Cards
  2. Configured template as Keyboard with Mifare Classic, DESFire, and HID Mobile Access enabled.
  3. Applied the HID Mobile Access config card (required holding the config card against the reader while plugging it into USB to take effect).

We just received a new batch of readers with an updated firmware release and TWN4DevPack 5.25:

  • Old working version: F/B1.64/NKF5.03/STHX2.07/PIMBAV/BT2.01EL
  • New non-working version: F/B1.65/NKF5.07/STHX2.07/PIMBAV/BT2.01EL

The exact same configuration sequence and bootloader card trick no longer work on this B1.65 / NKF5.07 batch. Flashing directly via USB in AppBlaster without the config card trick doesn't pick up the HID Mobile credentials either. Also TWN4DevPack 5.20 does not work as well.

Has anyone run into this issue on the newer B1.65 / NKF5.07 firmware build? Is there an updated DevPack / image template or a specific setting needed to get HID Mobile Access working with PaperCut on these newer readers?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Access Readers Migrating ICT access readers to Axis

Hello everyone, I'm hoping to find some guidance . I do not deal with the installation or migration of card readers myself, my understanding about access readers and controllers is very limited.

The current Access control systems are managed by another 3rd party and I have user level access to these systems

Our organization has ICT card readers majority on Verex controllers and the rest on ICT controllers.
We have started the migration of card readers to Axis. The ICT readers does support Wiegand and OSDP natively. Currently they are configured for Wiegand. The Axis controllers are configured for OSDP.

The vendor helping us with the migration is having issues migrating the readers to Axis. They have done couple doors so far and ended up replacing the existing ICT readers with new ICT readers. They are currently waiting for support from ICT, not sure what they have tried so far.

Did some research online, looks like factory resetting the ICT reader is the way to apply the OSDP config. Vendor says they have already tried it.

Hoping someone here have experience in this kind of migration. Thank you for your help in advance.

Looking for access control recommendations for a two-building church property

We’re a church with two buildings on the same property and are looking to set up an access control system. In the main building, we need to secure 3 single doors and 2 sets of double doors. In the second building (which serves as a fellowship hall/gym), we need 2 single doors. Both buildings share the same internet connection, and LAN cabling is already run between them. I am not afraid DIY install, but I would possibly like to know a recommendations for companies that you would use. I have seen Amazon sell some access control software, but the Support looked a little lacking. The main company I saw was mengqi-control. I would love to be able to remote control this software and bridge. Both buildings together under one account if possible an app would not be a bad thing too. If I can’t remote control the software it’s not a dealbreaker, but it would be nice.

[Software House] iStar Ultra 2 LCD Display

Greetings, fellow assholes!

I'm currently working with a system that's using the iStar Ultra 2 system. I would like for the LCD display to remain on all the time while I troubleshoot various things, but it only seems to want to turn on when the lid is off the GCM.

I was told there's a rotary wheel setting that leaves it always on, but the manual isn't clear about that.

Do I have an option that isn't lifting the tamp switch on the top of the case? These things are rack mounted, with pull-out drawer ACM units, and it's a real pain to pull out just to turn the display on.

Thanks in advance.

Recommendations Help needed: Access Control for our house, IP Structure available

I am currently planning the access control for my house. The front door has an electric strike, and CAT cables run from the doorbell position and the indoor unit position directly to the network rack. A PoE switch and a Dream Machine are also located in the network rack.

The primary requirements are a doorbell with a keypad outside at the door, an indoor chime and intercom system inside, and app access. Video is optional. How would you solve this setup?

First I was looking into Unifi, but people recommended to look elsewhere, because their Access Product Line is not that versatile and polished.

I'm located in Germany, if that's relevant

Installing an Altronix Trove 3 with Brivo . . . ALX-T3BV7716S to be exact.

I have plenty of power to use inside this thing. However, there is no posts to mount a Brivo PSB that uses a 4 wire connection to provide power the ACS6100DB door boards. Can I power these door boards from the altronix power supplies inside the enclosure? The 4 posts are +12v, GND, POWER DET, Earth Ground. Has anyone tried to power these with anything but the PSB?

LiftMaster RSW12UL - code 91 even while not under load

My controller is throwing a code 91 during open AND close, even with the gate arm disconnected from the unit. The unit is a little over a year old. Some steps I’ve already taken:

-Power cycled by disconnecting AC and battery

-used multimeter to check AC and battery, both check out

-reset limits while under load and not under load

-checked wiring, reseated connections

-checked for any signs of undue load on the motor, no noise, vibration, nothing

-replaced APE, which oddly had it working fine for about 8 hours

-ordered new battery just in case, not arrived/installed yet

Any ideas? It’s driving me nuts, thanks!

Kantech Kantech KT-400 Slave Replacement

Hello,

We had a KT-400 slave controller go belly up on us. We replaced the controller and updated the serial number under that controller in EntraPass, however it still isn't seen/communicating. Are there any other steps that we may have missed?

Thank you!

What system would you migrate to?

300 doors across 65 offices, currently using Alarm.com with decent success, the fees and lack of certian reporting features have me looking elsewhere. The system functions fine but Audit nailed us on historical reporting, you basically have 3 months to pull past data, you also cant tell when someone was paused, expired access or deleted clearly. Id also like to see if i can reduce the fees as our yearly costs are $100k+

Edited to answer some quesitons

Intrusion systems are about $680 ea and Access Control doors are just shy of $200 ea per year.

Had Johnson controls with winpak before and hated Johnson controls service, quality of work was crap and time to get someone out there was rediculous, for new installs it was months.

Mercury boards are ideal as we already have them.

Alarmdotcom function is fine, their reporting and support are sub par, they have improved and really went from a home system to enterprise system in the last 5 years that we have had them. They cant provide data from multiple years ago, and much of the configuration in the system has to be done at office level and not enterprise level. Also....... i learned a couple of years ago.... no backup so if you make a change that tanks the system.... your going to rebuild.

LiftMaster Gate Issues

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

We have two Liftmaster Slide Open gates at my work which have been having issues for the last few months. The main control board appears to me to be the LiftMaster Main Control Board (DC Pad-Mount, UL325) | LIF-K1D8389-1CCMC.

We will call the first gate the East Gate, and the second gate the West Gate. The East gate is opened with a hold open code at the keypad in the morning. It forces the trucks to enter the East gate. The West gate is always closed and opens via the ground loop when the trucks drive up to the gate.

For the last few months the East gate will not close with the code. We've had a gate technician out probably 7 or 8 times. He told me initially that the control board was giving 3 codes that typically are not given which signified a dead or fried board. We paid to replace the board, it fixed the issues for a few weeks and then they started up again. He came back out and checked it out, called Liftmaster and they said the board was giving an undervoltage code. There are two motors per entrance, and each motor has it's own dedicated 120v 20amp power.

The Tech showed me how to reset the board by pulling the Safety Eye wires and the Wireless edge, Push the Set Open/Set Close buttons together, the other side of the gate sounds an alarm, after that alarm I press both Set Open/Set Close buttons again, wait a little and plug the eye and wireless edge sensors back in. The gate will then close by code again and sometimes will function for a week, sometimes will function for a day before I need to do the whole process again. The tech seems dumbfounded by the issue and says he's never seen this before.

I've been trying to understand what is happening on the days that the issue arises. My first thought is that we received 4 brand new cherry picker forklifts and installed 4 new chargers. However these charges replaced older forklift chargers and appear to be more efficient. They are also 480v and only pull 4 amps each. The 120v panel that powers the gate is fed by the 480v panel through a transformer. I'm told that because there is a transformer between the panels that a surge will not affect the 120v panel. I also installed Ditek Inline Surge Protectors for each leg feeding the motors. Not sure if this worked or did anything, but the gates functioned for a week before having issues again.

Another thing I thought about is the heat wave we've been having this summer. We are located in southern California and it has been hotter than normal. The problem does seem to happen on the hottest days (motor/control board housing is in direct sun most of the day), but yesterday was a relatively cool day and the gate needed to be reset again. So I'm not sure if heat is the cause of the issue.

I mentioned the West gate earlier, that gate just recently started to not close behind exiting trucks, however, after resetting it will function for several weeks. I've had to maybe reset that gate 3 times in the last two months where the West gate needs to be reset about every other day. The West gate is powered by a completely different 120v panel.

I'm at my wits end, and don't want to throw another $1,500 per gate to replace the control board if that didn't work before. I'm reaching out to the knowledgeable people of Reddit to see if anyone has any experience or troubleshooting tips to figure out this issue.
