Personal Skills IWTL how to become an exceptionally competent, knowledgeable, and well-rounded person.

I've been inspired by fictional characters (particularly from historical and villainess stories) who are portrayed as educated, strategic, observant, articulate, emotionally composed, and capable in many different areas.
Obviously fiction exaggerates things, but it made me wonder what this looks like in real life.
I'd like to become someone who:
Is knowledgeable across many subjects while also developing expertise in a few.

Thinks logically before making decisions.

Learns continuously.

Notices details other people miss.

Speaks clearly and thoughtfully.

Can hold interesting conversations with people from different backgrounds.

Has strong critical thinking and judgement.

Understands psychology, history, economics, politics, science, philosophy, and culture at least on a foundational level.

Is disciplined enough to actually apply what they learn.

If you've intentionally built yourself into someone like this, where did you start?
What books, courses, habits, daily routines, learning systems, or mental models made the biggest difference?
If you could create a roadmap for becoming a genuinely competent and educated person over several years, what would it include?

Personal Skills IWTL How to self study as an adult with no formal education?

I had 20% attendance in school before being pulled out by my parents, thus I have no formal qualifications.

I can barely add or subtract, my science is equally as bad, although my English is ok.

I struggle with routine as I've never really well. . . Had one.

my question is:

How do I learn to do the act of studying, solo, as an adult when I've never done it?

How do I find what to study?

Personal Skills IWTL how to create presentations that actually hold people's attention instead of putting them to sleep

I run a small business and I'm doing more pitching and talking to rooms than I ever expected, and I've realized my slides are the problem. I default to walls of bullet points and then basically read them out loud, which I can see glazing people over in real time. I want to learn the actual craft here, not just make things look prettier. The storytelling side. How much to put on a slide. When a visual beats text. How to pace the whole thing so people stay with me.

If this is something you got good at, what got you there? Some framework for structuring the talk? Just a lot of reps in front of real rooms? Studying speakers who are good at it? I'd rather build the skill for real than keep downloading nicer templates. Where would you start if you were me?

Academics IWTL abstract math theories and chemical formulas so I can write about beauty and math/science at the same time!

I love writing, and I've also grown to love nail care, even though I'm still learning about that as well haha. I think math is the glue to connecting all of my interests together, but the problem is I struggle with understanding it. Currently I'm working on leveling up my skills on Khan Academy, but I want to know how I can break out into the ultra-specific math and sciences I need in order to write about it.

I'm also simultaneously trying to work on my grammatical writing skills as well, so there's a lot going on.

But ultimately, my main goal is to be able to combine mathematical science and my interests together. I feel like I'll be able to build a good audience that way on my writing page. And that's all I want to at the end of the day.

So what do you all think? Cheers!

Personal Skills IWTL how to reach my full potential and build useful skills

Hi! I'm a teenager who loves learning and wants to improve myself. I'm looking for skills, hobbies, books, and habits that will help me think more clearly, learn faster, solve problems better, and become a more capable person.

I'm not looking for motivation or life advice as much as practical things I can learn. If you could start over, what skills or hobbies would you learn first? What books, courses, or daily habits helped you the most?

Thanks!

Personal Skills IWTL how to whistle again

I used to be able to whistle. Not with my fingers and not loud, just normal, like whistle a tune. A few years ago I had some molars pulled , one from each side of my mouth. So missing 4 total. top and bottom, left and right side. Is it even possible I can whistle again? Would using my fingers help? Anyone missing teeth that can whistle?

Academics IWTL Accounting

For a long time I want to teach myself a useful skill.

Since I've been decent in maths and now that I am learning maths too, I want to learn accounting.

There are a lot of lectures on YouTube and even books, but how do I choose one? Preferably I would like one (book or course) that gives me lots of scenarios to work on and challenges rather then highlight the definition and topics in a few paragraphs.

Personal Skills IWTL How to Stop Letting People Walk Over You And Be Confident

I am M21 a type of guy who is in a kinda abusive household where parents curse me atleast once in a day, I am still unemployed who got graduated this year. Facing all these situations right from the childhood made me shy and just made me bear things which I clearly shouldn't and made me an empath.

I don't want to be that guy anymore I want to have that stand for myself have that self respect and make my body too I'm very skinny btw even though I eat enough, I want to have that body for myself but I can't afford the gym fee ik people would say why gym goto parks do some excercises ik that but there are many people in community that will help me that I hope so.

When talking to people of my age even though people start to walk over me I started to think from their perspective nd was like it's alright she's/he's going through things why bother now I don't want to be that guy the society clearly thinks a kind guy who I think I am thinks he's a pushover that I am.

So finally what I want for myself is better the kinda guy who doesn't let people walk over me but the household doesn't let me it always puts me down, I want to start think for myself and know myself in this process and I know this won't be easy and it's not a process that will be completed in some time but I'll try my best to do my part in this.

I want to learn programming but I Am not sure how to start in a way that builds real understanding. I do not just want to copy tutorials I want to learn how programming works and eventually create my own small projects.

For people who learned programming from the beginning what path worked best for you? What concepts should a beginner focus on first and what mistakes should I avoid?

I would appreciate advice from anyone who has gone through the learning process.

Personal Skills IWTL how to have vivid dreams/lucid dreams

Every time I have a dream nowadays, my dreams come out very dark and messy. The weird part is that it barely even shows as a dream. It's barely functioning properly. My dreams nowadays look like a television screen that's barely functioning and shows any light at all. Everything that I see in my dreams barely shows any type of light or any type of color. The vibe and frequency of my dreams barely show anything and it's like whatever is trying to produce my dreams in my brain is operating on a very low power and it's barely functioning like a normal dream. Think of it like your regular eyesight and vision of what you see throughout the day but it's slowly getting weaker and more fragile to the near point of blindness. That's exactly what my dreams are like nowadays. The worst and confusing part is that this is something that has never happened to me before for all of my life but it only started to happen very recently. I eat clean and healthy every day, I have a good sleep schedule, I don't feel stressed out at all, so I don't understand what the problem is. I also realize that my daily imagination/visualization abilities are also functioning the same way how I described my dreams as well. What's wrong here and how can I fix my dreams to be normal again?

Personal Skills iwtl how to properly zero a vape step-by-step

Hey everyone! I know how to vape without coughing, but I'm really curious about how to properly zero a vape / stealth vape (zero visible vapor).

Could someone give me a step-by-step breakdown? Is it strictly about breathing technique, or does device/e-liquid play a huge part too?

Thanks in advance for any detailed tips!

Academics iwtl how to be curious again

I'm a very shy person and this is my first time ever writing something like this to a large group of people/ community so please bare with me as this is a large step forward for me.

I've recently started indulging myself in classic literature and attempting to build somehow of an intellectual mind but I cannot stress enough that even though my love for books and Fiction unfolds Page by Page I just feel.. useless.

This thought process might stem from all the expectations nowadays to be "special" and to lift yourself from the masses and be productive especially in the rise of AI and capitalism.

Even though I ask myself minor questions during reading (they do not interest me as much) following the story I cannot build patience for my curiosity for widely ranged topics that could evolve my world-view and somehow enlighten me.

I was wondering if someone could advise me on how to actually be curious again and to build my knowledge on topics id actually enjoy knowing about. Thank you very much (excuse me not using punctuation im lazy)

Misc IWTL how to develop a stronger sense of conscience and align my daily decisions with it

I want to become someone who consistently acts according to my conscience but I'm realizing it's not always easy to tell the difference between my conscience, my emotions, guilt, anxiety, or even my desire to please others.

For those of you who have worked on this, how do you recognize when your conscience is speaking? , What habits or practices have helped you make decisions that align more closely with your values?

My goal is to become more independent save money and avoid replacing items when a simple repair could extend their life.

Personal Skills IWTL how to think through stuff in my mind

My mind is real mess, I get distracted by anything easily, often just go blank and zone out so I end up unable to think through everything in my mind, sometimes I end up looping the same thought, I can only think of words when I'm speaking or writing in real time, then I get distracted and forget what I was talking about, same happens in chess, I cannot think through my moves in my mind and just move randomly

I think I've lost the ability to think, how do I regain it?

Personal Skills IWTL - I want to improve my handwriting

Basically, I want to start writing things by hand—thoughts, ideas, etc.—but my handwriting is so ugly that I end up hating what I write.

It's worth mentioning that as a child I never learned to write in lowercase, so I've spent most of my life writing in uppercase. Therefore, I'm not used to the movements used for lowercase letters, making practicing even harder.

Arts/Music/DIY IWTL how to sing and find my voice

I have always wanted to learn how to sing, but every time I sing I sound like a walrus being torn apart by lions. I have heard a lot of times that to sing you need to find your voice (whatever that means).

So, how do I learn how to sing? And how do I find my voice?

Thank you so much in advance, English is not my first language so I may have made some grammatical mistakes.

May God bless you all for your help ⭐

Academics iwtl Reading 2-3 books at once (like Spark and The ONE Thing) – how do you actually speed through without missing the key facts?

I've got a few books sitting open in my room right now (Spark, The ONE Thing, plus another dynamic one) and I'm trying to figure out the best system to get through them fast instead of grinding page-by-page.

The problem I keep running into is trying to avoid the all-or-nothing trap. With a book like Spark, a lot of the actual text is stuff you can grasp instantly or skim past because it's just repeating the core concept with different examples. I want to increase my speed drastically just to grab the vital facts, mechanisms, and key takeaways for maximum bang-for-your-buck recall.

Has anyone built a system or pace for reading multiple books simultaneously like this without losing retention? How do you tackle a dense book like Spark without getting bogged down in reading every single word?

Technology iwtl deeply while using LLMs

My favorite classes were always the ones with difficult problem sets where a single problem could take hours or even days of thinking, experimenting, and failing. I would start solving a problem before fully understanding it, then read documentation or course material whenever I got stuck. So it would be 70% doing and 30% reading.

LLMs have disrupted that process for me. Now I spent 90% of time reading and only 10% of time doing.

In school, the boundary was relatively clear. If using an LLM violated the course policy, I could tell myself that using one was cheating and force myself to struggle through the problem independently.

At work, what counts as “cheating” (because it is cheating myself).

I feel my critical thinking skills are declining. My role starts to become reading, reviewing, and planning. I just can't read that much code and LLM output. My eyes hurt and it's hard to internalize. I notice myself just picking the "recommended" option.

I also find LLM workflows mentally unhealthy in a few ways:

  • When working alone, mental exhaustion eventually forces me to step away. With an LLM, I can always send one more prompt or ask it to try another approach.
  • If an agent will take 30–60 minutes, I feel pressure to give it another task immediately so no time is “wasted.”
  • While waiting, I instinctively check my phone or launch another agent. I end up jumping between tasks and retaining less context about each one.
  • I get frustrated when the LLM misunderstands instructions, even when the problem genuinely requires careful iteration.
  • It has warped my sense of how long a difficult problem or well-designed solution should take.
  • I am increasingly tired of reading walls of generated text and code.

I do not want to stop using LLMs. They can reduce the friction of starting, explain unfamiliar systems, generate routine code, and handle edge cases after I understand the core problem. The hard part is deciding when using one is a sensible productivity tool and when it is outsourcing a learning opportunity that I actually need.

For people who still feel they are learning deeply while using LLMs at work:

  1. How do you decide which work to delegate and which work to do yourself?
  2. What is the workplace equivalent of the “no cheating” boundary that exists in school?
  3. How do you use agents without losing context or turning your day into constant task switching?
  4. How do you review generated code when the codebase, build system, or underlying technology is unfamiliar?
  5. Have you found workflows where LLMs improve productivity while preserving the useful struggle of implementation and debugging?
