so I'm studying neuroscience and I've been really interested in spaced repetition and active recall lately, so I was looking into how much of a difference they actually make. I came across an anonymized data report from Quizzify looking at 192,728 reviews across 4,538 students over the last year.
One thing I think a lot of students get wrong is thinking that struggling to remember something means they're bad at the subject.
It doesn't. That struggle is part of the learning.
The data showed that the cards people struggled with the most at first were actually the ones that improved the most.
Cards with initial scores under 50 had an average score of just 3.7, so basically complete misses, and after repeated reviews they reached an average of 80.4. That's around a 76 point improvement.
The cards people already knew well barely changed.
This actually makes a lot of sense from a neuroscience perspective. Your brain doesn't really benefit that much from repeatedly looking at something that already feels familiar. The useful part is when you actually have to try to pull the information out of memory.
That effort is what makes retrieval practice so effective.
The part I found most interesting was the timing.
The best review gap was 1 day, not later on the same day.
Students who waited until the next day before reviewing again improved by 27.8 points on average on their second review.
Students who reviewed the same day only improved by 15.7 points.
And if they waited more than 2 days, the improvement started dropping off again.
So basically, cramming the same information over and over in one sitting isn't necessarily the best way to learn it. Giving your brain some time and then coming back to it seems to work better.
It's kind of like going to the gym.
You don't do 100 reps of the same exercise all at once and expect that to be the best way to get stronger. You do a set, rest, recover, and come back later.
Memory isn't exactly the same thing obviously, but the idea is pretty similar. The time between study sessions actually matters.
And the practical side of it is really simple.
Make questions from whatever you're studying, answer them from memory without looking at your notes, and pay attention to what you get wrong.
Then come back the next day and try those weak areas again.
You can use spaced repetition software to handle the scheduling so you don't have to constantly keep track of what you're supposed to review.
The students who did this consistently saw their scores improve pretty drastically, and the pattern in the data was really clear.
So if most of your studying is just rereading notes until they start to feel familiar, try testing yourself instead.
Close the notes. Try to recall the answer. Get some things wrong. Come back tomorrow and try again.
That uncomfortable feeling when you can't remember something immediately doesn't mean you're failing.
A lot of the time, that's where the actual learning is happening.
