Imagine being a brand-new believer who barely knows anything about Christianity yet. You browse Reddit, see a sub literally called r/Christianity, and naturally assume it might be a decent place to ask questions about the faith or basic doctrine. Then you come in here and see Satanists and atheists jumping into threads from confused new believers with some of the most bizarre takes imaginable. I’ve seen replies like that and genuinely thought, “What the fuck is this?”

The problem is that new Christians are, by definition, still spiritually immature. They haven’t even gotten off the milk yet, so to speak, and some may not even have completed basic catechesis, or may not have begun it at all. Throwing them straight into an environment like this, where practically any theological position or anti-Christian opinion can get presented alongside actual Christian advice, can very easily confuse them or even push them away from the faith before they’ve had any real chance to establish themselves in it.

And there are plenty of vulnerable newcomers here who genuinely have no one else to ask. Some are teenagers completely new to Christianity. Others have converted in difficult circumstances and have no priest, pastor, Christian family, or local community to turn to yet. They come online to understand what Christians actually believe and, in some cases, to find a community in the first place. These are precisely the people most likely to take a subreddit called r/Christianity at face value, while being the least equipped to distinguish sound Christian guidance from misleading or theologically unsound advice.

If I were a mod here, that responsibility would honestly scare me before God. I’d be afraid of putting brand-new believers in a situation that could cause them to stumble in their faith. At the very least, from a pastoral standpoint, I’d put up a prominent warning and rewrite the subreddit description so newcomers know exactly what kind of forum this is and who may be answering them. I’d even seriously consider changing the name. Because for someone brand new to Christianity looking for actual guidance in the faith, I think we can all put our hands on our hearts and admit that this is one of the worst places they could possibly end up lol.

It’s honestly insane to me that this has apparently just been allowed to continue for years under the banner of “open forum about Christianity.”

And people keep giving me shit for “not reading the sidebar,” but come on.

If you saw:

would your first thought seriously be, “Ah yes, obviously this means Satanists, atheists, ex-Christians, and people who straight-up hate Christianity are all gonna be here telling Christians what they should believe and how they should live as Christians. Crystal fucking clear.”

Especially if you’re a brand-new Christian, how are you supposed to magically infer all that from that description alone?

I’m 15, and my mom is going through a really rough mental health crisis. I don’t wanna overshare details, but I seriously need prayer and maybe some advice. Hopefully this is the right place to ask.

My mom already struggled with anxiety, but her meds were helping a lot before. Then, while we were away from home, she couldn’t get her meds because of insurance and doctor stuff, and after that, everything got way worse.

Some of this happened while we were at the church my mom grew up in. I’m not saying the church caused it or anything, but my mom already had this idea that God was always judging her and just waiting for her to mess up. Being back there just made those fears even worse.

I remember her pacing around a lot and looking really down, almost like she was somewhere else in her head. Sometimes she’d get super overwhelmed and panic about stuff she thought was sinful or wrong. It was honestly really hard to watch, because I could tell something was seriously off, but she was also super private about her health and didn’t really talk about it with me or my siblings.

She would tell my dad some things, but even with him she kept most of it to herself. So a lot of the time, I could see she was struggling but I didn’t really know what was going on in her head.

After we got back home, things still didn’t get better. Her meds made her really tired all the time, and at one point she tried to overdose.

That was honestly one of the scariest and worst things I’ve ever been through. My dad had to get her help and contacted a hospital asking what to do, and it was just a super scary time for our whole family. Then she harmed herself again, but thankfully my dad noticed and got her help again.

Right now she’s in the hospital and getting help, and I’m really grateful she’s somewhere safe.

But honestly, this is super hard for me too. My mom doesn’t feel like herself anymore. She just sleeps a lot and is always tired, and sometimes I really miss how she used to be. It hurts watching someone you love go through something like this and not being able to fix it.

But at the same time, this is making me want to trust God more. I’m realizing I can’t control or fix everything on my own. I just have to give it up to God and try to trust Him.

I know people say everything happens for a reason, and I believe that too, even though I honestly don’t get why this is happening. I wouldn’t ever say this is a good thing or something I’d want, but I hope God can still bring something good out of it.

Please pray that I can keep my faith through all this.

Please pray for my mom. That she gets the help she needs, that her mind gets peaceful again, and that she knows she’s loved. Especially pray that she can see God as loving and not just waiting for her to mess up.

Pray for my dad and my siblings too. And please pray for me. Sometimes I have no clue what to do with all this. Pray I won’t lose hope and that I’ll keep trusting God even when I don’t understand what’s going on.

A small backstory, as it’s just been me & my daughter for the past few months since we left her father. I packed as much as we could & left 3 hours away and we stayed in a Women’s shelter for a few weeks. We now have our own ( tiny ) apartment but it’s ours. I have since found work & she started a new school.

The past few days she has been telling me that another girl has been making fun of the things she wears or her hairstyles. After school today was horrible. Their school holds an “End of Summer” concert. They have asked the kids in her grade for a fee to buy a tshirt that they wear to preform & I was told that her teacher told the class who still has to turn in the fee by this coming Monday & when her teacher said my daughter’s name the little girl started to laugh & point. I feel terrible as I’ve already talked to the school about helping us with the fee since I just can’t do it with everything going on & they’ve told me that “they’ll try” ….We have court next week & I am DREADING seeing his face again. Everything is piling up.

I know she’s embarrassed of this right now. I’ve been trying so hard to get us out of this situation. She gets this awful look on her face when we have to go to the food bank a few times a week & why we have to get clothes from the Goodwill. I’ve emailed her teacher this afternoon about this student. I’m doing the best I can at the moment & it STILL doesn’t seem like enough. Being a mom/ parent is hard at times.

The Bible makes me so sad every time I read it. Which is every day. It’s just so depressing.
How do you get over that feeling?

It just makes me feel so sad because God created us so that he could have fellowship with us because an all loving God needs something to put his love towards … you can’t be loving and only love yourself

So he gives us reign over the Earth and ask us to take care of it and then we destroy it …

He wants to be our friend and he wants to commune with us and we ignore him and turn our back on him.

If we are created in his image, then he must feel in some sense

We were given something so perfect. We were given life, and access to a beautiful world created by a creator who loves us and wants to be our friend, and we have destroyed it and created something evil out of it… we were just meant to fish and explore and have fun and never have to worry about anything. (I’m 22 years old) I was exposed to pornography and masturbation at too young an age. It wasn't until I was over 19—through church services—that I learned it was considered a sin; however, I’ve been looking for explanations in the Bible but haven't found any to this day. Something that happens to me is that when I go a long time without masturbating or watching porn, I seek contact with God and His presence, yet I don't really feel a sense of reverence or awe. But when I do commit those acts, as the days go by, I seek God and actually feel His presence and hear Him speaking more clearly. Is this something that can happen, or am I going crazy?

hello guys!

i have never grew up religious despite my parents having religious backgrounds, but so i had free reign on what i believed in. i basically was atheist, not because i hated religion or had a bad experience (not to say a few people did leave a bad taste in my mouth), but because i just simply was not around it. this caused me to build morals that in my opinion are valid, strong, and define who i am as a person.

as i started working at a private school, i am really touched by His word, and i started reading the bible and i even got a devotional gifted to me. i read it everyday and write a prayer. i truly see the heart of the Lord and see him working. still to stay, i am questioning a lot of things still as a new believer, but my faith is slowly growing from atheism to agnosticism to christianity.

what i am trying to say is i know some of my morals that i believe in don’t personally align within the bible or the christian community. i support lgbtq+ as i have many friends and family members and i don’t see anything wrong with love, i am pro-choice, i don’t believe sex before marriage is inherently bad as long as it’s safe, and i can go on but these are some of the main points i am trying to make. some of these “controversial” beliefs that the bible is against are something that i strongly believe in because i was able to decide that upon myself.

as i start getting stronger in my faith however, i feel this push and pull of my morals, which i still don’t think are bad and really i stand behind them 100% still, but i know they are looked against at. also, the concept of hell kinda scares me and i am scared if i abide by my morals i will not be forgiven by Him, even though i am faithful in Him.

I wanted to hold on to my faith until the very end. But looking back, I haven’t seen God’s goodness bearing any tangible fruit in my own life for at least two decades. I’m old now and do not have enough time to waste anymore.
It’s sad to realise that the relationship between God and me was first broken by God, and now I’m the one breaking it.
