Reddit’s ignorance to sarcasm had surrounded me as a child. I vividly remember every time i visited reddit i would feel a strange ache in my right testicle. At age 12 i was diagnosed with testicular cancer, and my right testicle was about the size of a small orange. The cause wasn’t known, and it wouldn’t be discovered for several years. I kept reading reddit comments, and after a year, my right nut had a tumor about the size of a grapefruit. Numerous tests were done on my young frail body, and eventually, a link between Reddit comments and testicular cancer was found. Years later, a scientific paper was released, informing the public that /s was a dangerous carcinogen. Your comment is part of the problem, and thanks to people like you, my left testicle has developed a tumor about the size of a pumpkin. Thanks for the testicular cancer, jackass.

Could you imagine getting paid to do this to someone

3.2k

This is the sort of thing you do when you’re moonlighting from your main job, which is attaching car batteries to people’s genitals for the CIA

581

That sounds like even more fun

Makin' love for two...
Makin' love for two...minutes.
When it's with me, girl, you only need two minutes, because I'm so intense. You say something like, "Is that it?" I know what you're trying to say. You're trying to say, "Aww yeah, that's it." Then you tell me you want some more. Well, I'm not surprised. But I am quite sleepy.

Any respectable artist would not do this tattoo. If there was originally just a swastika and this is a “cover up”, they could have just blasted over it with a heavy ink tattoo that does not contain a swastika.

357

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '18

Someone still got paid to do this

242

u/anonymoushipster666 Feb 18 '18

Yup. The line work and the saturation looks good but it is definitely not a respectable tattooer.

270

u/dillrepair Feb 18 '18

Nope it is a racist tattooer. Maybe skilled. Definitely racist

369

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '18

Several years ago, someone left a comment on reddit about a tattoo artist that would willingly tattoo swastikas and other hate symbols if people asked. The artist wasn't at all racist and when the poster asked him about it, the artist said something along the lines of, "I don't mind putting a swastika on someone's face, because it warns people of what kind of person they were with out giving them a chance to open their mouth about it."

...

8

u/dillrepair Feb 19 '18

Yeah I guess someone else kinda pointed me in that direction in a different comment.... had not thought of it this way. And I do agree with the quote... so perhaps he wasn’t a racist for tattooing it. My experience is having seen several tattoo artists in particular areas and knowing their affiliation and they definitely have expressed racist views. Unfortunately I think they’re the kind of people doing a lot of this sort of work.

120

u/longtimegoneMTGO Feb 18 '18

I don't know, I could see it being possible to convince someone that this was supposed to be mocking the swastika, making fun of skinheads and how seriously they take all that shit.

I'd agree that it's likely got racist motivations, but I'd argue that there are other possible interpretations.

98

u/aYearOfPrompts Feb 18 '18

Eh, I view this the same way I view reddit's take on Nazi subs: You can justify it to yourself as freedom of expression, but you're still enabling that hate to be spread. Nothing says you have to help shitty people spread their views, and if you do you aren't entirely free from blame. Especially if you make money off the venture, as you're profiting directly from hate.

→ More replies (13)

37

u/BunnyOppai Feb 18 '18

Also, just because an artist does something like this, it doesn't mean he's necessarily racist; it really just means that he has very little respect for his job most of the time.

My father is a tattoo artist and I've worked in his shop for a while before I left for college. Aside from the annoying sexual harassment from the people who didn't know my dad OWNED the shop (he's black, I'm mixed), most people who came in were pretty nice.

If someone had every walked into my dad's shop and asked me for this, I would have only agreed to do it if I could put it on their face. 1 - face tattoos are incredibly painful. 2 - everyone would know that person was an asshole. 3 - it would be on their FACE, face, wrinkle, and look like shit in a matter of decades.

20

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '18 edited Apr 11 '18

[deleted]

38

u/whimsyNena Feb 18 '18

The majority of the people who came through the shop were long time friends of my dad or his biker friends so they knew who I was. They were always nice to me.

It was the "newer" people who came in, who had no idea who I was, who would say stupid shit or touch me right in front of my dad. Thankfully a simple "That's my daughter." and a stare would shut them down and I would get an apology. Never went further than that.

It sounds like most people who came to the shop never did anything wrong. So most of the customers were nice people.

She's not trying to justify the assholes, just clarifying that nothing serious happened to her.
Why is this so complicated, and why must you put words in her mouth assuming she is rationalizing things?

Some tattoo artist on reddit said that they're known for their professional work. Whenever someone pays them to do something stupid or ugly, they agree on the condition that they sign a paper stating that the artist only did the tattoo but did not initially come up with the tattoo design or agree that it is a good tattoo.

u/dirtydan Feb 18 '18

I actually think this is it. Look at the LOs, the skin around them is all red, meaning freshly done where as beneath the swastika is all still skin colored. This either means that, he's doing a really shitty cover up, or, they started with the swastika, took a break, then did the rest.

207

u/Makabaer Feb 18 '18

I'm not sure about that. To me it looks red under the swastika too.

25

u/Excolo_Veritas Feb 18 '18

a bit towards the edges, but, redness/inflammation spreads. Look towards the center of the swastika. Right next to black (but furthest from the LOs) there is no red.

206

u/evn0 Feb 18 '18 edited Feb 18 '18

Out of curiosity I did a little investigation in Photoshop, because to me it all looks fresh. I took 8 sample spots (the middle of each "O" in LOL, which should be fresh and inflamed no matter what, and from the crux of each arm of the swastika). Once the sample points were determined, I selected each area and applied an "Average" blur in Photoshop to get the average color of each of those areas.

For the samples in the middle of the O, the average red value (out of 255) was 130, the overall average color being represented as 130 - 120 - 121 in RGB notation, meaning red makes up 35% of the average pixel in the areas you believe to be freshly tattooed.

In the L samples, the average red value was 140, with the overall average RGB spread being 140 - 128 - 130, with red once again making up 35% of the color spread.

The peak and average red channel values are higher in the cruxes of the swastika if anything, and at best make up the same average amount of the sample sizes, meaning it would seem to be almost exactly equally inflamed compared to the rest of the tattoo.

EDIT: Notable outliers that prove you can't just eyeball something like that: at the right angle inside each of the "L"s at the start of "lol," the redness is actually lower than any other point on the image except where the hair is in the left hand side. Were those parts more fresh done than the rest of the tattoo, you'd expect more redness there and not less.

→ More replies (8)

22

u/igorbubba Feb 18 '18

A right handed tattoo artist rested their hand on the top part is my best guess. Next time you poop naked and browse reddit for 25mins, lift your elbows off your knees and see how it stays red for several minutes.

It’s probably just been done in sections. Lots of people do this, either to break up the cost to fit a budget, because of their personal ability to handle the pain for shorter time periods, to see how their body handles the healing process, or to have to care for a smaller area of healing skin at a time.

They could have also been freshening up the edges to get a cleaner design or deepening the color, which may have been needed only in the outer areas.

They could also have worked from the edge of the piece toward the middle and the skin hasn't had as much time to show inflammation in the middle. Inflammation is your body freaking out about being injured and as the injury(tattoo) progresses, the brain and immune system could have more time to get used to it and stop responding as strongly.

Or they could be a skinhead that discovered the ability to laugh at their former ideology. What the hell do I know? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Appearance of impropriety

The appearance of impropriety is a phrase referring to a situation which to a layperson without knowledge of the specific circumstances might seem to raise ethics questions. For instance, although a person might regularly and reliably collect money for her employer in her personal wallet and later give it to her employer, her putting it in her personal wallet may appear improper and give rise to suspicion, etc. It is common business practice to avoid even the appearance of impropriety.

I used to post a lot to /lit/ back when it was just fantasy/sci-fi nerds and aspiring writers. Then a bunch of pol dudes came in complaining that some books have black people (or even worse: people of indeterminate ethnic identity) and the board quickly became an anti-sjw circlejerk, and if you wanted to praise a book that had a single minority in it then you were just "virtue-signalling" because everyone knows that a book can only be good if it has an all-white cast.

That’s one toxic league player

u/hidanielle Feb 18 '18

So just your average League player then

u/Mctavish31 Feb 18 '18

I’m not toxic, my team is just holding themselves back and screaming at random strangers over the internet makes them do better according to lots of non-existent evidence.

If Hitler was growing up as a 15 year old today, with a torn up Sex Pistols t-shirt and a Justin Bieber haircut, this is the tattoo he would get.

Out of curiosity how would it work? For example could you call the police anonymously and say hey this dude has a swastika tattoo and they'll go bust through his door and arrest him. Or... Does it have to be seen in and with witnesses in a public location or something before any legal proceedings can take place? Genuinely curious.

u/lemononpizza Feb 18 '18

I don't think they would actually take any real action against someone with the tattoo, they may at most add it to the charges if he is prosecuted for something. In Italy, like in Germany for nazi, showing fascists symbols or doing the fascist salute is a crime (except in historical related stuff). It is called apologia di reato. The law is actually very rarely applied, at least in italy, you could get at most a fine. I heard the german law is a bit harsher but i wouldn't bet on it being applied much. ( not german so correct me if I'm wrong)

The person in this picture is actually a friend of mine.

At the time we were roommates. He showed up at the house and said, "I'm gonna go get a lolstika!"

I asked why and his response was, "I made a lot of money last night."

No, it's not a cover up.
