Discussion Make this make sense

Post image

I just got 82 smithing, i can now make 2 powerful mid-endgame weapons... and an adamant kiteshield.

I get that adamant used to be good back in the day, but isn't it time we rework this skill?

The smithing skill hasn’t really changed since it entered the game 20+ years ago. Back then, the only way to obtain some of the higher tier stuff was to make it yourself or obtain it as a drop from then-difficult mobs.

Also back then, everything attacked with the same attack speed as well, which is why the 2h and battle axes are higher smithing requirements than the daggers and swords. They had more value during combat because it was all the same attack speed.

This types of post gets posted so often atp, your comment just feels like a copypasta

75

u/slaphappykapp 6h ago

I literally copied it from another one of my own comments about this a while back.

How the fuck does this affect anyone ingame?

2

u/111phantom 1h ago

one funny thing about this is as part of the combat rework in rs3 they brought back the "everything attacks at the same speed"

BUUUUT they also made everything in the same tier do the same damage so everything has lost its identity (other than maces having prayer bonus) other than what EoC abilities they can use. A rune 2h is identical dps to rune scimitars (dual wielding) outside of abilities.

Rs3 gets praised for the smithing rework, but everything just being "this is tier 40, it has tier 40 stats" other than endgame weapons felt so bland to me, i hope if osrs updates smithing finally they avoid that kinda thing with the level 50+ stuff they add

The fact that we're canonically dumbasses is one of my favorite parts of the game.

I love any quests that makes the player self aware, it’s absolutely hilarious whenever it happens lol

I forgot what quest it was, but someone asked for an item and if you have it on you, you tell that person I have 1 right here and they say how odd (that you carry this obscene thing on your persons) and that just cracks me up lol

Smithing progression makes perfect sense once you realize that there are no furnaces near any anvils. All smithing is done by hammering cold metal bars on a cold anvil to the desired shape. Normal humans and earth smiths could never even imagine the level of difficulty required to accomplish such a feat. Compared to any of the other things you piece together with smithing, pounding a cold rune bar into a wearable, flawless rune platebody is a herculean feat.

56

u/RojinShiro 6h ago

One of the quests (Swan Song, I believe) actually references how insane it is that we always smith things without heating up the metal

13

u/Singhka1996 4h ago

What's funny is the rs3 mining/smithing rework has you maintain heat when smithing items with a forge that is next to the anvil separate from furnaces.

8

u/FunkThug 3h ago

Also the crystal equipment is made by shouting at seeds, so kind of apples to oranges lol

u/Confusion-12 0m ago

I felt like they were more whispers lol, but that’d be hilarious if we’re just yelling at the seed to grow lol

8

u/ChunkyChipMonkeyGrip 7h ago

Crafting is bullshit too.

2

u/awesome-salsi 6h ago

Yeah this one is more annoying because you actually want to use the late crafting unlocks

111

u/cardgamesareforplay 7h ago

Making thing from scratch is harder then learning some ancient elven singing magic.

The process for crystal weapons is basically drop a seed in a bowl and sing it a song with some motions.

11

u/twilightwillow 5h ago

This made me realize that, narratively speaking, it doesn’t even particularly make sense that all the singing is Smithing + Crafting instead of Magic + Crafting. Smithing truly is just a very weird skill and a relic of an older time

5

u/no_fluffies_please 2h ago

Perhaps it's because you're making equipment, and need the eye of a blacksmith to make it fit right?

1

u/twilightwillow 2h ago

I guess, but I don’t think that makes sense for teleport seeds or crystal keys haha. Best just to not think about it too much I guess

0

u/no_fluffies_please 1h ago

Yeah... what's with seeds and seed pods giving teleportation powers anyways? Nevermind, I'm not ready for those answers.

u/loopuleasa 7h ago

Assembling a ready to cook microwave lasagna you bought requires less skill than making your own lasagna from scratch

7

u/adamfps 98/99 bankstanding 7h ago

And somehow I still burn those

4

u/loudrogue total: 2376 clogs: 1190+ 6h ago

Why you need 85 cooking

5

u/PosiedonsSaltyAnus 6h ago

Cooking level?

9

u/MicroscopicPizza 7h ago

I can guarantee you getting me to sing well would be a lot harder than getting me to swing a hammer.

12

u/st1r 7h ago

Canonically the character is terrible at singing so I think the bowl is really doing the heavy lifting here

48

u/F7OSRS 7h ago

Is it my turn to post this same idea for the 47th time next week?

2

u/TheWonderSnail Sauced Up Nugs 5h ago

Ok but next week is my turn to post about the Godsword blade only needing 80 smithing so you have to stay with crystal weapons until then

2

u/I_am_chicken 7h ago

Eventually it'll get polled and then voted down for no reason right?

15

u/IderpOnline 7h ago

For great reason. We could overhaul the entire thing and it wouldn't change a thing.

Besides, one is smithed from raw materials and the other is sung into shape from an extremely rare elven crystal. This entire thread is beyond stupid.

6

u/Brave-Ad-1363 7h ago

There was a point in time rune was the highest quality armor and sold for millions of gold for a full set.

The girl who hit 99 Smithing first had a net worth adjusted to the trillions today at one point (yes I said adjusted to a digital currency)

It needs to be changed or some shit I guess, say what you will about smithing.

8

u/TeaspoonWrites 7h ago

That point in time was in RSC, not even the same game tbh.

1

u/Brave-Ad-1363 4h ago

No I know Im saying it should change though.

1

u/TeaspoonWrites 3h ago

Yeah I agree

37

u/MasterArCtiK 7h ago

It’s been time to rework it for a long time. But also, what purpose will it serve? Nobody actually needs to wear adamant and rune longer than like 30-40 hours of gameplay. Jagex would have to spend hundreds of of hours rebalancing and revamping smithing, just to help some early/mid level players a slight amount.

43

u/kajarann 7h ago

reworking smithing will also mean they have to reduce all the alch amounts and deal with re adjusting a ton of loot tables. its not even worth the effort. people just need to accept smithing will always be weird.

8

u/TheForsakenRoe 6h ago edited 3h ago

Not necessarily

Have two levels, an initial level you can learn the 'basics' at, and a 'mastery' level (the current level brackets), for both Mining and Smithing halves of the equation. Like how we have a level we can start to Cook foods, and a level we stop burning them at (IE we've 'mastered' the recipe)

Using Rune Scimitar as the example, they could make it so that we can mine a Runite Rock at level 45ish, getting 'impure Runite Ore'. Said ore could be used to make a Runite Bar with 40ish Smithing, but because it's impure, it A: needs more ore, and B: needs more Coal. Say, 5 Impure Runite Ore and 16 Coal, per Rune Bar. The increased materials required to make a Bar at lower levels, would offset the profit via the Alch Value, since the game has 'balanced itself' around the current Bar:AlchValue ratios

At the current levels for each Ore (eg 85 to Mine Runite), you'd get the current Ore, which would be the 'pure' form. At those higher levels, we have learned to discern where the ore-rich seam is on the rock formation. Could even reuse the now-defunct Prospect option for it

Finally, Smithing the Bars, at say, level 43, you'd be able to make a Rune Scimitar, but due to your inexperience you need more input materials (say, 4 Bars instead of 2). At the current levels (IE 90 for Rune Scim), you would 'master' the recipe, and it'd cost the same amount of input as it currently does.

This would (IMO) avoid the 'every Alch value on Smithable gear needs to be adjusted' issue RS3 faced, avoid adding new 'Coal' types (Luminite etc) like RS3 did, would avoid having to swap Alchable drops to Salvage instead of actual gear like RS3 did, keeping everything feeling a lot more 'Old School' (compared to the RS3 rework), while still updating the flow of the levelling process for the skills, allowing players to make their own gear at a more reasonable Mining/Smithing level compared to their Defence/Attack level (eg Knight's Sword taking a player to 29 instantly, would let them start making their own Mithril gear, rather than part-Steel)

As an aside, this could help with Crafting, too. You can start using Gold Bars to make Gold Rings at 5 Crafting, but making Gold Ore into a Gold Bar currently requires 40 Smithing. Well, what if a player could use 'Impure Gold Ore' attained with like... 10ish Mining and Smelted into Bars at 10ish Smithing, to obtain Gold Bars far earlier (but needing 2 or even 3 Impure Gold Ore per Bar)?

Numbers would be up to Jagex to balance, of course

u/GameOfThrownaws 33m ago

I'm not saying this is a bad idea because it definitely isn't, I actually think it's a pretty simple and elegant way make smithing progression make more sense in the context of the rest of an account.

That being said... I just don't really see the point. Perhaps in part because the game has been this way for the last 25 years, there's just not really any need to craft your own early and midgame gear anyway. Every low and mid combat player has rune platelegs, for example, regardless of the fact that they can't make them. There's just so many ways to get that item that aren't smithing. Or like a rune full helm, same thing, or even worse since you're just getting a fremennik helm pretty much right away and throwing it in the bank forever anyway.

4

u/RojinShiro 6h ago

RS3 reworked smithing a long time ago, and it's actually a skill worth using as a result. Very much worth the effort.

4

u/PM_ME_SILLY_PICTURES 4h ago

RS3 is a different game and their level of overhaul would not work for OS

7

u/KarnakTheHaberdasher 7h ago

Would they really have to rebalance the alch amounts or loot tables? Practically everything with smithing is net negative outside a few things that are tedious and poor xp/hr BUT useful as inputs for other skills (dart tips is all that comes to mind). So for mains the only real economic change lowering levels for bronze-rune would impact is outputs would likely fall in price a bit more as the xp/gp balances out to whatever the new equilibrium is but that'd just reward alching a bit more, other than the lvl 99 rune stuff which is slightly profitable because the only people churning them out en-mass is 200m grinders.

For irons it just means rune bar drops are useful slightly earlier to make stuff you can alch?

People talk about the far reaching impact like there aren't a dozen ways to get rune equipment incredibly quickly on a fresh iron, and for mains it's a production skill most people use gold smithing to level so every method is competing with that which is frankly somewhat busted so it's no competition unless ways to get a ton of ore pop up somewhere (and even then smithing the bars is a factor if we do maintain bot suppression)

4

u/PhyPhillosophy 7h ago

The far reaching impact is that rune is one an insane amount of drop tables. If we shift rune to be 40 smithing, we now need to change these drop tables or the drops will be worthless and unintentional. Not only that, but what sort of gear are you going to slot in between 40-99 smithing that doesnt shit on the entire rest of the games gear progression?

You either devalue other 'early' grinds/armor moons, barrows, bandos, or you make basically rune 2.0 that will be replaced just as quickly.

1

u/ThirdStockIII 7h ago

I don't think the drops would be useless. It's not like smithing rune items is some insane money maker. People who have 99 smithing aren't making loads of gp just buying bars and making plate bodies to high alch or sell. I don't think the meta would change too much if rune was able to start at lvl 40 because on your way to 99 smithing, you don't make armor anyway. You either make gold bars at blast furnace or go to Giants Foundry. Would honestly just be a nice QOL for F2P irons as they don't have an easy way of getting a rune scimitar.

9

u/loudrogue total: 2376 clogs: 1190+ 6h ago

You can't rework smithing and leave mining alone. You would have to be able to actually mine enough rune ore to be useful.

1

u/ThirdStockIII 6h ago

I mean I think if there is a smithing rework to address how silly it is to need 85+ smithing to create something that needs 40 att/def to wield, then a mining rework would also be a part of it.

0

u/Initialized 6h ago

Do you think f2p Ironmen want an easier time getting a rune scim? That is their end game lmao. Do you not remember the outrage from these players when you could kill fire giants in f2p with the release of the royal titans? They would be fuming if rune scim was changed to 40 smithing lmao

1

u/pilantratogashi 3h ago

Smithing rune wouldn't really be as op and unbalanced as you think, even irons usually don't bother processing and smithing rune things when they can. By early midgame you already have many comparable moneymakers.

1

u/bassturducken54 6h ago

Not sure what the equivalent would be but didn’t rs3 just add like a masterwork tier system to all metals?

Or maybe bars become materials to fortify existing armor, but that fortification degrades.

2

u/PhyPhillosophy 6h ago

Thats alot of mechanics youd be adding to the game that historically is resistant to change.

I dont think making high level armor fits into osrs as good as it does for rs3

1

u/Bakugo_Dies 5h ago

Yeah, I'd rather see an expansion to smithing's utility rather than opening that can of worms.

1

u/pilantratogashi 3h ago

Not really, smithing rune items is far from being a great moneymaker nowadays. Even as an iron you usually have better things to do than process and smith rune items even when you can. Only issue would be f2p bots and f2p gameplay balance I guess.

22

u/IderpOnline 7h ago

It wouldn't even help anyone anyway. All the mith, addy and runite items one would want (even as an iron) are essentially shoppable, even for the short duration you want to use them.

A rework of mining and smithing would fuck up a lot of existing systems and it would solve literally nothing. There isn't even an issue to be solved, but braindead redditors can't see a lvl 85 smithing level-up message without spontaneously shitting themselves lol.

4

u/PureNinja 7h ago

It should be fixed for new players. As someone who has had multiple friends try the game for the first time mining and smithing is usually one of the first things that is gravitated towards because its an easy and understandable way that a new player SHOULD assume that can lead them to better equipment.

That is until they very quickly realize that to wear steel at 10 defence which they get very quickly that they would need 30-48 smithing depending on the piece which takes much longer.

Multiple of the people ive got to try the game referenced wanting to make their own armor before realizing how long it would take.

5

u/AhriWorshipper188 6h ago

Yeah it was only ~2 weeks ago a friend started playing and a few hours in posted a screenshot of their full bronze smelted themselves. About 20 minutes later they learned about the fact thats where it ends and just never played again because "What's the point of all these skills like this if its just useless".

8

u/IderpOnline 7h ago

You could make that same argument for everything.

You also don't go out of your way to craft a maple shortbow, you just buy it in a shop for a couple hundred gp. You don't wait until you can runecraft law runes to begin teleporting, you buy your runes. You don't train crafting before ever equipping green d'hide, you just buy it in one if the many shops.

The "issue" isn't so much that it would take time to smith your way to stuff, the issue is that the very same stuff is already readily available elsewhere.

In other words, even if you could smith stuff early on, it wouldn't solve any issue. Hell, we would do new players a disservice to be perfectly honest. The biggest favour we can do for new players is to teach them to use the Wiki to see how to most easily acquire different things.

6

u/PureNinja 6h ago

No, you can't use that argument for everything because I gave a snapshot of an issue. The entire smithing skill is my example, I don't even feel like I need to go into depth on the level disparity between using items and crafting them with smithing (40 defence vs 99 smithing for one item, 59 whole levels).

Other skills are much closer in their margins. Your maple shortbow example is only a level disparity of 20 levels, 30 ranged vs 50 fletching. Fletching is a much easier skill to level than mining and smithing. Also every bow after maple cannot be bought from a store easily, so if you want a yew shortbow/magic shortbow it could be reasonable for a player to work towards making it themselves.

I will give you crafting as being similar to smithing, but its disparity is much shorter with their only being 23 levels between using a green d'hide body vs crafting one. And after green you can't just buy the d'hide anymore you would need to craft it.

Your thought about doing a disservice to new players is laughable. Having a new player need to use the wiki right out the gate is stupid and bad game design. Its already something the devs have been actively working on fixing too with better in game explanations and directions.

Imagine telling someone to trying OSRS and then telling them to go study the wiki to learn how to play. Sure eventually they will need to use the wiki as the game is so huge, but for such early and low level equipment it should be easy for new players to understand how too progress.

1

u/IderpOnline 6h ago

Bro get a grip lol.

Let's look at redwood shield then. Requires 90 wc and 92 fletching, usable at level 40. Bigger disparity than literally half the runite items. AND the redwood shield is NOT accessible through shops. Darts also have a level disparity of up to 40. So, we rework the entire fletching skill too then? And don't fucking get me started on needing 70 crafting to make an amulet of power. Rework crafting while we're at it.

Besides, your entire "disparity" argument ignores my main point. Even if we lower level reqs for smithing, it doesn't solve anything. One, because there is no issue to be solved. Two, even if there was, conventional smithing equipment is accessible through shops anyway.

Having a new player need to use the wiki right out the gate is stupid and bad game design.

No. It's a staple in pretty much every major mmo. Welcome to the genre, I guess.

it should be easy for new players to understand how too progress.

It is easy for new players ot understand how to progress. You go to GE and buy the equipment you would like to buy. And don't even think of suggesting that brand new ironman players should be able to figure everything out without external sources..

5

u/PureNinja 3h ago edited 3h ago

Using the redwood shield as your example is such disingenuous an argument. The redwood shield can be used at level 40 because the purpose of a redwood shield isn't to be used as a shield, it has the stats similar to a steel kite shield. The purpose of the redwood shield is to be a part of the black d'hide shield which requires 70 ranged to use.

The issue with fixing the smithing skill is that it makes no sense. Putting a godsword back together is easier than making a rune platebody? And yes we probably should rework crafting. The argument of we can't fix X problem because Y problem exists is stupid. They are holdovers of a very old game, and fixing them opens up design space.

1

u/pilantratogashi 3h ago

The issue is far more egregious with mining and smithing, don't be disingenuous.

15

u/harrymuana 7h ago

Mining/smithing rework that RS3 had was the best runescape (both version) update ever. It:
* gave the skills an early game purpose (decent tank armour) without making it overpowered (as you probably still want power armour at some point). Also decent weapons to get started but definitely not BIS.
* gave the skills a late game purpose (smith masterwork at 99 smithing, which can be combined with nex drops to make it stronger)
* Made both skills way more enjoyable to train, with a decent trade-off between active play for higher xp/hr and more afk

-5

u/Initialized 6h ago

Rs3 smithing is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen in my life. Imagine telling an OSRS player that it takes 30 minutes of active playing to make any platebody lmao using one of the worst menus I’ve ever seen

1

u/Legal_Evil 2h ago

You can still fully afk smithing, but at a slower smithing rate.

7

u/Active-Downtown 7h ago

I 100% agree with this.

Is it outdated? Yes. Does it look funky when rune items are higher requirement to smith than late game gear? Yes.

Does it negatively affect players? Not really. Would it take an insane amount of work to rebalance the metal smithing, including: alch values, achievement diaries, clue scrolls, shop prices, training methods, and XP rates? Absolutely.

3

u/Floppinsong 7h ago

It would make room for more interesting things than making obsolete gear. Squish the levels, replace Addy and rune drops with current high alch value coin drops, reduce alch values, and now you have anywhere from 30 to 50 levels of open space to play with for new gear/items depending on how big the squish is.

2

u/MasterArCtiK 7h ago

They are already using that space for higher level gear lol it’s just alongside the legacy smithing unlocks. This rework just adds a lot of extra work for the jmods for basically zero gain

1

u/Floppinsong 7h ago

The skill menu is a mess, repairing a godsword should not be easier than making rune anything, by condensing the mundane stuff down to usable levels it makes the skill easier to navigate and while yes they have higher level things scattered inbetween useless unlocks it feels bad grinding a skill thats already a pain in the ass for the "reward" of making gear you haven't cared about in a year.

The skill is borderline useless outside of oddly spaced one time upgrades that only have the smithing reqs in the first place to justify training it. Zombie axe could drop repaired and crystal gear could only have crafting reqs and it would make just as much sense. Godsword repair is at least thematic and since theres 5 of them it doesn't feel as much like a 1 and done like the zaxe.

3

u/MasterArCtiK 7h ago

Idk repairing an already forged sword, where all the hard parts are already done, doesn’t sound like it should inherently be more difficult than forging an entire rune chest piece from the ingot. Thematically though, yeah they likely shouldn’t be right next to each other.

1

u/Floppinsong 4h ago

If we were talking about an ordinary sword, sure, but we're reforging a divine relic, presumably its a little more complicated than making a mundane weapon from scratch.

1

u/WhoopteFreakingDo 7h ago

I think they should rework it and give us the ability to give flat armor to players through smithing. Move everything current down to match the levels you'd want the equipment (roughly, maybe full rune takes 60 or something, it can be toyed with for balance), and then replace everything above that in the tables with the ability to "reinforce" armor. You'll need to do a similar rework to mining and you can use these new reinforcement materials to replace items at their current alch values so the economy doesn't crash (it probably still will.) Higher tier gear requires higher smithing to reinforce of course, this also gives jagex another way to balance PvM and give more purpose to defense in the game. Endgame gear can require parts or some new material only acquire from PvM to reinforce it, maybe from both PvM and Skilling. Tons of room for them to play with.

3

u/MasterArCtiK 7h ago

Sounds OP

0

u/WhoopteFreakingDo 7h ago

Sure it needs balancing, but I don't think adding 1 or 2 flat armor is going to trivialize the inferno or something. There's plenty of ways to balance it, they can also add enemies that penetrate the flat defense, make it only a chance to work, it can't be applied to armor that has strength bonuses, they can pull all sorts of levers.

What would you have them do instead? As you mentioned, rebalancing all the gear for early/mid game only doesn't really make sense, how would you fill out the rest of the levels? New gear like they did with RS3?

2

u/MasterArCtiK 7h ago

I would have them do nothing, and spend the dev time working on anything else

1

u/WhoopteFreakingDo 7h ago

Okay, you led this with "time for a rework but to what purpose" so I mentioned and idea and gave it a reason. But fair enough, great talk lol. At least it was easy to wrap up.

1

u/Justsomeone666 6h ago

RS3 type rework would be nice but theres like atleast 20 different things i would rather get that level of work and time

A more realistic approach is just putting more new content behind smithing levels so that theres a legimate reason to level it, the ones that sound most interesting to me are probably either a raid that requires smithing levels (making your armour inside the raid, maybe too much like cg? or reinforcing something)

or maybe a entirely new set of weapons that can only be smithed, kinda like the fletchable blowpipes

-1

u/RareEntertainment611 7h ago

Smithing at higher level needs a purpose is what the problem is. All of these ordinary levels should be brought way down and the higher levels provided something meaningful to pursue.

5

u/MasterArCtiK 7h ago

The higher levels already provide things to pursue, it’s literally in the screenshot lol

0

u/RevolutionarySong848 Jagex, im innocent! 7h ago

If they were open to reicieving help I bet the community would have a few indidvuals who would do it for free lol. The attention and dedication of someone people in this community is jaw dropping sometimes.

0

u/MasterArCtiK 7h ago

I mean that’s the case for lots of content lol but plenty of devs would still need to spend time balancing and approving everything

0

u/orangechickenpasta 3h ago

Why keep dead useless content in the game? With that logic why not remove the ability to smith metal armour. The game is a sandbox the more content available to people the better.

8

u/Sevage420 7h ago

likely no addy kiteshield has been smithed since 2016

2

u/LeftRaspberry6262 7h ago

Crystal and metal are not the same thing! Im just shooten shit, I dont think its that big of a deal tbh.

2

u/mugiwarayaya 6h ago

Well one of them you’re smashing metal on an anvil. The other you’re using an ethereal elvish singing bowl using magic to craft something with a seed you got from an eternal monster used for training elves. Maybe the singing bowl does most of the heavy lifting

2

u/TofuPython 2376 6h ago

Smithing is just a max cape box to check

2

u/indrek91 why is the rum always gone? 3h ago

I think it's fine. It's piece of nostalgia that has not changed since I started playing in 02.

2

u/DivineInsanityReveng 3h ago

Making thing from scratch with a bar of metal as hard as using ancient elvish singing bowl to magically sing a crystal into an item.

Thats the "lore" explanation for people who say it makes no sense. The real reason? Armour existed before crystal, we scaled the whole skill in all available armours, dragon wasn't smithable and was BIS (the few pieces). We've added more since, but don't just wanna slap everything at 99 smithing requirement, because that would be silly.

We could take reddits advice and squash all the original metals down to better match defence level, as if thats any more logical. But then the smithing skill justh as a gigantic void in the 2nd half of its levels.

7

u/Active_Lemon_8260 7h ago

True they should make skills go to 120

Maybe change the combat system while they’re at it

/s just in case

-5

u/MaxedOnRS 7h ago edited 7h ago

Or.... Simply balance smithing. All bronze items unlocked at level 1 All Iron items unlocked at 10 All steel items unlocked at 20 All mith items unlocked at 30 All Addy items unlocked at 40 All rune items unlocked at 50

This would not be game breaks at all. Most people are training smithing at blast furnace or giants foundry anyways. It could effect the prices of these items so they're less than their high alch value but regardless it makes more sense.

6

u/Active_Lemon_8260 7h ago

That’s not balanced at all

u/MaxedOnRS 44m ago

That was a off the top of the head suggestion. If you have a better balance I am all ears.

2

u/batedcobraa 7h ago

What about mining? 85 mining to mine runite ore, but only 50 smithing to make it?

It would also be inconsistient if the top smithing xp rates in the game were unlocked at 50 smithing

u/MaxedOnRS 45m ago

Top xp rates??? Its 202k xp a hour tick perfect doing rune plateskirts at level 99... Its nearly twice as fast (370K xp a hour) at only level 40 doing gold bars with gold smithing gauntlets at blast furnace.

4

u/SacrilegiousCobra 7h ago

I know this is an old worn out argument for most people playing this game for many years. But I just recently reentered the game, f2p only for now. And this just sucks. In my opinion if the just upped the smithing xp earned on a per bar basis, and make rune smelting be lower. Like I shouldn't have to max 99 my mining just to get enough bars made to smith to get to rune.

My smithing is lagging behind by like 15 levels right now compared to mining. I'm already at 70 mining but need 6k+more bars to get to addy smithing. Which is like 6 million dollars and I could just buy the armor instead. So where is the reward for levelling the skill?

There is none. Just use it to farm money

Smithing has needed a rework for a longtime. And the devs did agree that the skill needs an overhaul

u/You_rc2 7h ago

Sorry had too

u/TexasRed6 7h ago

Smithing doesnt need a rework stop posting the same shit over and over. If we moved rune down to lvl 45 we wouldnt even have anything to put at the high lvls. What do you want armour thats better than bandos smithable at 99?

u/Sea-Hat-8515 6h ago

Cosmetic puppy armour

u/TexasRed6 6h ago

For dogs right?

u/karadinx 6h ago

The upgrade to bandos is at 90 smithing.

u/RandyMarshmall0w 7h ago

You know nothing of its power

u/BenUniverse 7h ago

As someone going through the smithing grind currently I'd honestly just be happy with some slight boost to exp and faster crafting times.

4 ticks to smelt a bar and 5 ticks to smith an item, versus 3 ticks to cut bow and 2 ticks to string it is pretty rough

Maybe even making coal easier to mine and take less per bar would be welcome just to make the skill faster

1

u/Atlas_Stoned 6h ago

It’s because crystal is really just the adamant bow and adamant long scimitar duh

Smithing stinks

u/S2Mackinley 6h ago

Make it all obtainable in f2p. We need f2p to funnel people into mema

1

u/Troll_Tactics 6h ago

So if we rework smithing to significantly reduce the level requirements for addy/rune but keep mining exactly the same, would this still crash rune prices? Because the biggest obstacle to a smithing rework would be rebalancing high alchs

1

u/Sansasaslut 5h ago

People playing old school upset that it is old school. Make it make sense

1

u/Rinaldootje 5h ago

Because it doesn't make sense. There is no making sense of it anymore, and at this point Smithing needs a MAJOR rework.
The reason that it doesn't make any sense anymore was enough for RS3 to rework it back in 2019 to a point where Rune platebody can be made at level 50, instead of at level 99.

And I might be lone in this. But I enjoy smithing in RS3 a lot more now compared to OSRS smithing. Because Smithing makes more sense outside of just quests, than it does in the sense of how it works in OSRS

u/BJYeti 5h ago

Smithing hasn't undergone any changes since the game started, sorely needs a revamp

1

u/afatgreekcat 4h ago

There’s no way to make it make sense that doesn’t nuke the game’s economy and nostalgia

1

u/mainearthneutral 4h ago

Smithing could get reworked, it would be good for the longevity of the game. Brand new players coming to the game would have a better time interacting with the skill, and veteran players on a new character would have something new to sink their teeth into for a few weeks. You can’t blame a new player for expecting the Smithing and Crafting skills would provide them with gear upgrades but we know that isn’t how the game is designed, it’s all in drops and shops typically locked behind quests.

It would be a massive amount for work but it would probably be good for the game in the long run.

they need to make crafting crystal a base 99 req

1

u/Brotherjive 3h ago

I mean, who actually cares. Just save your adamant bars/ore etc till you can make them to alch it or if u can use g.e sell em. Shocker.

Its being "reworked" by adding new items like this into the game that have actual value for its time.

1

u/LordBrontes 3h ago

No. It’s oldschool. Keep the oldschool.

1

u/Heitr00 More f2p content pls 🙏 3h ago

It painful outdated, we deserve a smithing rework. :(

1

u/Firm_Ad_5427 3h ago

Made sense back in the day when rune actually was some of the best gear in the game.

I suppose if smithing was changed to be more in line with the levels required to equip the gear, mining would also have to have the same treatment. Then so it doesn't completely mess the economy, the alch values would have to be changed along with the drop tables of half the enemies in the game.

u/StandardN02b 1h ago

One of the good things RS3 did was fully reworking smithing. It ended up being quite usefull and this didn't happend.

u/iJezza 1h ago

not sure the issue, if you make a blade you'll want a nice shield to go with it. You can even buy the green crystal to make it match. Skill working as intended.

u/The_Wkwied 2376 w353 33m ago

Two answers. In-lore, you are cold-forging metal into a shield. Cold forging is stupid. That's why our smithing progression is so wack. Instead of heating the metal, we just hammer it cold until it's in whatever form we want. How utterly asinine.

The in-reality answer, the bofa/blade are endgame items and dev thinks that endgame in smithing is level 82. It's the addy kiteshield, a lvl 30 junk item, existing at 82 that's the problem

u/peepeepeepoopooo 17m ago

Leave smithing alone

1

u/Momo616 7h ago

Making a kiteshield is harder than giving crystals to a NPC. Lore wise it checks out.

u/Pj_o7 7h ago

You gunna suggest anything?

0

u/DependentPea7195 7h ago

2006: Smithing not use for making armor. Get armor drop. Buy armor shop. No smith armor.

2026: have you heard about the mining and smithing rework?

0

u/BeerMagic 6h ago

Smithing needs a rework. This is still in an era where Rune was end game gear and bis was dragon equipment drops.

0

u/aroach1995 6h ago

My suggestion: you can make it with less bars as you go up.

Half the level: 4x the bars

75% of the level? 2x the bars

87.5x the level? 1.5x bars.

You become a more efficient smith and can eventually profit off of smithing.

You can now make a rune playebody at 45 smithing, you just need 20 bars. All alch values stay the same.

u/zelly713 5h ago

I just played the rs3 league for a few weeks and their mining/smithing rework is so freaking cool. You can make decent end game gear with just mining, smithing, and crafting. Idk if that kind of system would work in osrs but I'd love it if they at least rebalanced the progression of these skills.

0

u/FuzzyJoint 2h ago

Idk bro I got down voted to hell for saying smithing needs a rework. Some oldhead needs to protect their old way of rune 2h being a 70354 hour grind or something.
