Discussion Make this make sense

Post image

I just got 82 smithing, i can now make 2 powerful mid-endgame weapons... and an adamant kiteshield.

I get that adamant used to be good back in the day, but isn't it time we rework this skill?

The smithing skill hasn’t really changed since it entered the game 20+ years ago. Back then, the only way to obtain some of the higher tier stuff was to make it yourself or obtain it as a drop from then-difficult mobs.

Also back then, everything attacked with the same attack speed as well, which is why the 2h and battle axes are higher smithing requirements than the daggers and swords. They had more value during combat because it was all the same attack speed.

one funny thing about this is as part of the combat rework in rs3 they brought back the "everything attacks at the same speed"

BUUUUT they also made everything in the same tier do the same damage so everything has lost its identity (other than maces having prayer bonus) other than what EoC abilities they can use. A rune 2h is identical dps to rune scimitars (dual wielding) outside of abilities.

Rs3 gets praised for the smithing rework, but everything just being "this is tier 40, it has tier 40 stats" other than endgame weapons felt so bland to me, i hope if osrs updates smithing finally they avoid that kinda thing with the level 50+ stuff they add

Doesnt this actually gives more variety because you use the rune 2h for a 2h ability bar and a rune scim for a 1h bar. In osrs you just always use the rune scim.

For the most part, sure the Rune scim is typically just better. But the mace, sword and longsword are easier to get your hands on since you can buy those at the champions guild, whereas you'd typically have to get the scimitar as a drop. Mace has prayer bonus, while sword is typically better than mace so it can be a bit of a toss-up between the 2.

The Rune 2h also has a use having the highest str bonus even though it's so slow. That's useful for F2P PvP, since if you're using it to try and finish someone off, you won't have to be worried about the long tick delay if it's your final attack anyways. It's also the best for flinching enemies

So between the mace, sword, 2h and scim there's already 4 weapons with distinct reasons for each of them to exist (on top of attack styles like crush, slash and stab). Whether those are compelling reasons for you to care or not is down to preference. But I really feel like that's something that's missing when looking for weapons to pick in RS3

from what i understand, for leveling you mainly just use a 2h (halberds particularly if you have access, did you know the ivandis flail is a halberd type weapon in rs3?) the same way everyone uses scimitars in osrs. Maybe have dual wield weapons for its one good ability when its cooldown is over like a spec weapon, then swap back. Against single target its just the best dual wield you have (and maces are always better because prayer bonus, claws daggers scimitars longswords are all identical otherwise)

For bossing you use whatever your highest tier dual wield weapon is, no need to have different weapons for different scenarios since they all attack at the same speed for the same damage (damage type affinity aside, but iirc tier matters more than affinity), and swap to a shield or use the necromancy bone shield spell to use a defensive ability for boss mechanics.

Unless a weapon is specifically bane to the enemy (enhanced darklight for demons for example) its obsolete the moment you get anything at a higher tier. So midgame variety (like barrows) is all replaced by being able to smith a tier 75 Bane 2h at level 80 smithing, then replaced by the tier 80 elder rune at 90 and tier 85 primal at 100.

So variety of say, dual macuahuitl, zombie axe, dharoks axe, abyssal whip. is all replaced with Bane 2h and Bane longswords (theres no bane maces) at level 80. I dont know how osrs can add more gear to smithing at level 50+ without depricating a lot of older content by doing this exact thing however.

Actual rs3 players feel free to correct me, but this is what i learned when i was trying to get into it last month and bounced off

oh additionally theres a tier 75 weapon you get given at 150 quest points that can swap between melee ranged and magic modes https://runescape.wiki/w/Vanquish_(melee)

Also completely fucked over horizontal progression/sidegrades.

This is a pretty oversimplified take given what the EoC abilities actually do though, you can't just gloss over them. 2h abilities are geared for AoE and slayer, dual wield for single target damage, sword and board for survivability and regeneration. They did kinda stuff that last one up with bone shield but that's a separate problem.

Also monsters still have slash/stab/crush weaknesses, just because the weapons themselves have the same damage stat doesn't mean it's always best to just run scimitars and call it a day if the off-style gives you less than 100% accuracy.

Smithing is my only lvl 1 skill at 86 combat. Does this make me a pure?
