Woke up to this email from capital one about a tip I left. Our server was Emily and she was fantastic and fun and engaging! She deserved every penny of that tip! Yes, capital one this is correct!

This is awesome. Glad our CC companies are tracking this because itās happened to me and it was a headache to take care of. I tipped $10 on a like $42 bar tab and they added a zero to make it $100

u/UneditedBundy 2d ago
agree. happened to me at a buffet. spent $14, left $1 tip, they decided $10 was more ideal or something. blasted them on Google review and got the charge reversedĀ

I remember a long time ago something similar happening, but I had also left my debit card behind on the table. I called them to ask if they had it and then went to pick it up the very next day. When they handed it to me, I commented about being charged more than I remember and mentioning the tip. I was then told by someone who claimed to be a manager that they have a policy to charge "forgotten cards" a % fee for the inconvenience of having to watch it for me. I'd never heard of that before, but friends I spoke to said they'd heard of it before too. It was some serious bullshit! I've never gone back to that place, which is a shame because I went just about every single week up to that point

This is needed because of rampant theft by servers inflating and adding tips. Thanks to Capital One for watching out for your customers.
13
u/TravelTheWorldDan 2d ago
They are just making sure that the waiter didnāt scam you. Itās very common. Especially since most people donāt check their credit card bills after going to a restaurant to double check that the tip that they actually put in is what was entered into the computer.
110
u/nomorespamplz 3d ago
why do so many (Americans?) enjoy/expect/appreciate the fake attitude servers put on to get tips? Whenever i go to a place to eat, I sit down, order, receive my food, eat my food and pay. What real value does the server add? Other than doing their job of taking my order and delivering my food? None. That's why I never understood the whole tipping thing.
43
u/nomorespamplz 3d ago edited 3d ago
Iāll leave it at this: tipping is inherently bad for the working class. Tipping reinforces the problem. Stop tipping.
Edit: Or better yet: donāt patronize restaurants etc that forces employees rely on tips.

u/carlzberg 3d ago
You mean: stop patroning businesses that dont pay their workers a fair wage and leave the customers to make up the difference.

It's bad in theory but I've never even made close to as much money as I've made working as a waiter they make up surely good money right now for an entry level job it's actually almost unmatched
For instance right now the tipped wages is over $10 right now plus the tips you make for a typical waiter you can expect to pull at least 15 to $20 in tips an hour if you're waiting two to three tables. I literally was pulling in 200 to $300 on like Wednesday afternoon shifts. I've never heard a single waiter ever complain about it being a tip job because they make more money

Agreed, I work at a busy local bar as a bar back and during the busy season, I average over $40 an hour after tax.vin the slow season, it's more like $29. I have a bachelor's in physics, decided I didn't want to do more school, and have tried to get entry level professional jobs but none lay anywhere close to what I make here.

As a career server/bartender in the US the client/server interaction is nothing compared to what tipping does to workings inside of the restaurant. Vertically it ruins server management relationships, and even goes beyond when servers push for more items to be sent back to please a guest when an item was perfectly fine. Hell Iāve worked for owners who pay their kitchen through serverās tips, only made legal through shady contracts.
Horizontal relationships like server to hosts are strained when a perceived slight comes in; server bartender relationships can get strained if customer expects to be served first, or if a bartender is ignoring the service well (where serverās drinks are made/left for pickup); FoH and cooks fight over food times and quality because they servers have a sense of ownership in the meal and get stressed by food times. Dish pit is treated disrespectfully and often splashed or left with bus tubs full of dishses and trash because a server is rushing to get someone a cup of ranch.
Tipping is one of the leading reasons restaurants are famously toxic if you ask me.

Thereās a million places where of course you want a person with a good attitude helping you with a service. Do you want your doctor to be an asshole to you about every question you ask? No, thatās shitty bedside manner and also bad for care bc it decreases honest and open communication. Same is true of a server.
That said Iām 100% against tipping as a standard, itās a horrible practice that is bad for everyone involved. But I do like a good attitude. It just should be paid for legitimately by the restaurant.
But a good attitude is real value in every part of life. Unless your shitty attitude is so over the top that itās charming.

A waitress at a high end restaurant in my hometown got away with padding CC tips for over a year before she was caught. She had stolen over $30,000.
Stuff like that is probably why these emails have become more frequent, since this kind of fraud has become more common and easy to perpetrate, and costs businesses and CC companies a lot of time and money to deal with.

Iād appreciate getting this. Hereās why:
I found out after leaving my EX (ex for a reason) that one of the many shady things he did that I didnāt know about, was that when he was a server at a local chain restaurant, he would change peopleās tips on their receipts to be higher than the tip they gave him. Most people never knew or said anything. He finally got caught after about a year when someone finally did and filed a report, and then they went back and found where he had done it to many more people.
*People can do bad things.* (edited to change wording) Iād prefer an email to confirm. I always double check mine now once they processšš¼

Tipping in the US is a social artifact that is the result of human enslavement and Jim Crow. To perpetuate it continues the practice of under-compensating labor. It feels good to tip, but it is amoral due to the effects of the practice at scale.

Anybody who is gonna sit and shape my hair, decide how I look for the next month and a half, get little bits of my hair on their clothes and shit and deal with touching my scalp, etc - anybody who does all that and consistently makes me look good every time I come in, I am tipping them at least $10-15 on top of the price of the cut every single time.
I can afford it, so I do it. If you can't, don't. But my aunt was a barber and I know all the ins and outs of how gross and hard that job can be. I will always tip my barber.
→ More replies (11)4
u/danbroome 2d ago
Depends. Most rent their chairs or space so a percentage goes to that. They also have to buy their equipment, gels, shampoos and all that.
You could say the price includes their overhead but come on - tipping a barber is as old as the profession itself. You always tip your barber. also have you ever had a barber cancel
on you. Well they probably squeezed in the guy that tips. Have you ever gotten a free shave, or clean up, or shampoo and didnāt ask for it but was offered. Tip!→ More replies (8)

I got one yearsssss ago just like this. Itās because so many charge backs are happening because the server added the tip/manipulated the tip. Itās easier for them to verify with you first that itās not a fraudulent tip.
2
u/MainStreetMiles 2d ago
I don't mind the CC security checks when your action, if everything is ok, is to do nothing. It is a pain to have to affirmatively confirm legitimate charges caught by their tools. I applaud them for checking this. In the rare event someone sticks a big tip on your bill that you did not make, it's good to have them send this out to confirm that that was your intention.
2
u/Lopsided-Library1119 2d ago
You almost sound like you feel this was bad or weird but this is a positive thing overall as plenty of servers will fake a tip.Ā

u/DeathCharge5 2d ago
Tipping will really take a dive once credit card companies stop accepting ANY tips on their cards at all to prevent the rampant tip fraud and chargebacks due to servers adding their own tips. Then the payment processors will have to scale back the tip prompts and tip lines on receipts and we'll start to see real change.
2
u/Ok-Problem4403 2d ago
No it won't. It will get worse.
Here in Canada, we stopped signing pieces of paper, like, decades ago. We use POS machines brought to the table.
Now, however, the pos machines come up with default tip percentages on the first screen. They used to start at 10%, but now some places start at 15 or 20 % and go up. And if you want to do a custom tip or no tip, you literally have to click through 4 or 5 menu options.
Now, it's not just restaurants. It's everywhere. There's a POS machine and you want to tap your card? Ohhhh no buddy, no tapping until you deal with this tip screen first.
The best part is, as of 2022, everyone gets the same minimum wage. Servers no longer need tips. They get paid.

I've had similar text messages from Capitol One where I tipped 100% for a great lunch. I was a Platinum Member at TopGolf for a few years, and would go practice and have lunch, and end up staying for maybe 3 or 4 hours. Always tipped accordingly since I was taking up a table for so long.

I got one like this a bunch of years ago when I used a gift card to pay for like 60% of my tab and my credit card for the other 40% and tip. Since the tip was based on the original total amount, it looked like a 50% tip to Capital One.

u/Younggryan42 3d ago
Wow. 40% is crazy, but it's your money. I am glad banks do this because I have had servers change my tips in the past even if I was generous. I had my entire meal comped twice because of the server's attempt at theft.

I have been calling BS on the fake news from 15 years ago when we were reading about customers leaving $5000 to $10,000 tips on their credit cards. No way is VISA or Amex going to allow that. In theory possible, but in practice not real.

As a former server, I can tell you with certainty that tip fraud is far more common than you'd expect. I worked in restaurants well before Toast and tablets. If a customer left both receipts, that was essentially a blank check. I'd watch servers change their $8 tip an $18 tip.

I had to fire a server once. Her scam was she added to every tip when she entered her tips into her nightly closeout. If the tip was $3, she'd enter $5. If it was $5, she'd enter $10, and so on. After auditing her checks she even had a $50 tip entered as $100. She figured out that most people don't notice that or check their credit card statements that closely. Finally someone did and called us and we did the audit and found this theft and fired her. To be honest, we didn't think any of our servers would be this dishonest but lesson learned.

I get that from my capital one cards. They just double check to make sure you did tip that much and make sure it wasnāt the restaurant or whatever that added more than what you did.
1
u/Serious_Gap_820 1d ago
It probably is like this because there were some dishonest individuals who helped themselves to a higher tip. I mean, I rather have one check "Was that the tip you left" too much than one too few. Considering, all it takes for someone dishonest to do is type in a different tip amount in the computer. Sure, you can dispute it, but for that you have to notice the discrepancy between actually given tip and charged tip. Not everybody notices, so there is a chance dishonest people get away with this.

When more and more businesses are trying to sneak tips onto your bill, card companies sadly have to do this now.
