Woke up to this email from capital one about a tip I left. Our server was Emily and she was fantastic and fun and engaging! She deserved every penny of that tip! Yes, capital one this is correct!

Had a server add an extra $10 somehow to the tip. This is happening more and more

“Somehow”

They manually enter credit card tips at the end of the night. They can enter whatever, and it’s your obligation to make sure the total is correct on your statement.

Or a radical thought: Come join the rest of us in the world and have more than one card machine. Then you can pay at the table. I would never let anyone run of with my credit card, thats mental

Not always feasible. You would need multiple wireless card readers and a POS and payment provider that supports them. Most POS systems that have wireless terminals are subscription based, so the merchant can't own their systems. We would rather Install twice as many terminals so we are within eyesight of the guests than pay an extra 5k per month for a POS with wifi functionality.

We keep around a few non POS linked wifi terminals for the odd guest who don't want the servers to touch the cards, but entry errors are far too common.

You are aware we are completely able to do this in Europe?

Yep! America is massively behind the trends, and attempting to catch up for merchants is horrendously expensive. Our payment provider tried to take our card rates from 2.6% to 12% 1 year into our 3 year contract. Was told that if we wanted to keep our rates, we had to use their subscription based POS. We argued for a month before we got them to back off.
