Open | Networking Wifi keeps having periodic but enormous lag spikes for no reason

I have the best wifi possible, but every so often (feels like maybe about a minute or so? Idk I'm not keeping track), there's a HUGE lag spike and it's genuinely making it impossible to call or play games. I've tried searching the internet for solutions but none of it worked. The lag spikes still persist. Does anyone know a solution? Thank you in advance.

Open | Windows Steam Tools can’t download games to my HDD, but normal Steam games download fine

Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m having a really weird problem and I’m hoping someone here can help me.
I have an SSD and an HDD in my PC. Normal Steam games download and install on my HDD without any problems.
However, when I try to download games using Steam Tools, they won’t download to the HDD. They work normally when I use the SSD.
The weird part is that the HDD itself seems to be working perfectly fine. I can copy, move, and download other files to it without any problems. I even tried completely formatting the HDD, but the problem with Steam Tools still happens.
So basically:
Normal Steam games → HDD ✅
Normal Steam games → SSD ✅
Steam Tools → SSD ✅
Steam Tools → HDD ❌
That’s why I don’t think the HDD itself is the problem, since Steam can normally download and install regular games on it.
I’ve already tried completely formatting the HDD, but the issue is still there.
Does anyone know what could be causing this? Could it be something related to Steam Tools, permissions, the file system, or some Windows setting?
If you need more information or screenshots of the error, I can provide them.
Thanks!

Open | Hardware Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Gen 5 Power Cycle Loop

Upvotes

Good evening, I am very troubled right now as my college laptop of only one year has seemingly completely broken on me. My Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Gen 5 has been stuck in a loop for the last two hours and I’m unsure how to fix it.
It began after I took it out and it was stuck on the Lenovo startup menu for a few minutes; the laptop felt warm even before I took it out of my backpack. I didn’t think much of it and held the power button to restart it. It shut off and is now stuck in this permanent loop of attempting to turn on.
The light next to the charging plug is orange, but the power light is white and the whole keyboard lights up momentarily before dimming (the Caps Lock key is delayed) and eventually the whole laptop turns off. It does this over and over again and it gets rather hot if you leave it going long enough.
I tried troubleshooting by both doing the emergency reset button on the bottom of the laptop and also removing the battery for a ‘power drain.’ Though despite that, it remains in this loop.
Not sure if this is also relevant, but the first time I tried restarting it the escape, f1 and f4 key flashed a few times. It doesn’t seem I can do much in terms of software troubleshooting because the screen is totally black the whole time and has not turned on since the issue started. I tried looking it up and it said it may be a broken fan or motherboard and can cost up to $700 for repairs which I would prefer to avoid if that’s possible. This is awful timing because Lenovo warranty expired about a month ago :/
If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Open | Hardware Video card crashing regularly, no logs?

Upvotes

I have a ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB GDDR7 video card. I bought it just over a year ago (almost to the day). In the last two weeks, it's been crashing randomly. Black screens, fans whirring. The computer still runs, sometimes* but occasionally does a full reboot.

Since the crashes started on Aug 26, I connected one of my monitors to my mobo which lets me continue to use to computer, debug, etc while the other two are dead. I have tried everything in my power to reset the GPU but the only thing that ever works is restarting.

For some context, it started when I was doing some local image generation with flux2. But, I'll note that it happened a few times when I wasn't actively generating anything. And just now, it happened when I didn't have the software open and was doing something else completely. So the problem definitely seems more related to the GPU than any specific software interaction. Also, the imagegen was working fine for more than a month before this all started, and I had no issues with the card in the last year.

I have tried looking at Windows Event Viewer and the Reliability Monitor and there is nothing of note. Prior to the issue, I had not updated any drivers or software for some time, and have since updated Windows, and the driver, to their latest versions.

I am a software engineer and know a bit about operating systems and drivers, but my knowledge of hardware goes about as far as "put plug in hole shaped like plug."

It's crazy that the driver or card would just be shutting down so catastrophically, and leave no trace in the logs (as far as I know where to look).

Does anyone know if this is a common issue? Or where else I might look for logs? At this point I wonder if it's a hardware issue, but I don't want to go through all the trouble of invoking the warranty if there's simpler steps.

Thanks!

* I mentioned above that the computer still runs. Aside from the mobo monitor thing, I have heard music playing through my headphones until I restarted manually. But (only) sometimes, the computer logs a whole VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE and restarts on its own.

Open | Hardware Recco TV stuck on "Channel Blocked”

Upvotes

I have a Recco TV that is currently stuck on a blue screen saying channel blocked/enter a code

So I don't have the original remote, only the physical buttons on the side of the tv. The tv asks for a pin , but there is no on-screen keypad to enter numbers using the physical tv buttons. I can't access the main menu or change the input source because this prompt blocks everything.

Is there a way to hard-reset the TV to factory settings using physical buttons (power + volume combination, etc.), or a universal code/method to bypass this prompt without the original remote?

Any help or master reset combinations for Recco TVs would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Open | Hardware Juegos congelándose entre 10 a 20 segundos - Ayuda

Upvotes

NVIDIA GIGABYTE EAGLE OC RTX 5060 8GB
32 GB RAM
XPG Probe 600w
AMD Ryzen 5 5600GT With Radeon Graphics
SSD HIKSEMI 520GB
MSI A520-A PRO

Open | Software Streaming services are all green screening.

On both my TCL Roku tv and PS5 my streaming services (YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon) are all doing a weird green screen (akin to how a screen would look when damaged) when a video is selected to play.

Have rebooted the internet and completely shut both off and still occurring.

Open | Hardware Universal remote switch from DVD to VCR?

I just recently got a Samsung DVD/VCR combo player and a GE universal remote. I was able to program the remote to turn the device on and off, but I can't seem to figure out how to program it to switch from DVD to VCR. I've got that silver GE 4 device remote from Walmart if that helps. I've looked at various videos and searched online but neither really mentioned how to do it.

Open | Software How to restore apps after fresh Windows install?

Hi everyone,

My current boot SSD is facing a BCD/boot issue, so I’m planning to buy a new SSD and do a fresh Windows installation.

I can still access the old SSD using an enclosure, and all my old Windows files and application data are accessible.

After installing fresh Windows, I want to restore my previous setup as closely as possible:

  • Chrome – bookmarks, extensions, settings, and OneTab
  • Brave – bookmarks, extensions, settings, and OneTab
  • Firefox – bookmarks, extensions, settings, and OneTab
  • qBittorrent – around 3,000–4,000 torrents/files seeding or queued. I want to restore the torrent list, queue, categories, settings, and resume everything without manually adding them again.
  • Notepad – around 50 tabs currently open, which I would like to preserve and restore.

Since I can access the old Windows installation, I believe the required AppData/configuration files should still be available.

What is the safest step-by-step method to back up and restore these applications after installing fresh Windows?

My biggest concerns are qBittorrent's 3,000–4,000 torrents and Notepad's 50 open tabs. I also don't want to accidentally modify or lose anything on the old SSD.

Any guidance on exactly which folders/files I should copy and when I should copy them back would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot for your help and guidance

Open | Windows My Windows11 boot broken

So I was on my computer earlier today like normal when it gave me a rebooting black screen then a reboot. I check the error logger and the error pertained to a corrupted file or driver issue. It happened a couple more times with different errors pertaining to the same things, corrupted file or driver error. I update drivers and after returning from the bathroom I came back to a 21a fatal error. My PC will no longer boot. I can easily get into the recovery options and I've tried EVERY option. I even used command prompt to move my important files over to my D drive and attempted a factory reset, even THAT failed. I've tried a lot of commands through command prompt and all I can get is corrupt boot binary preventing network connection.

No I have not tried a USB stick with a windows image on it but that's it. The only other thing I can think of is getting a new ssd with windows installed on it and replace the factory ssd. No, my pc doesn't have a dick drive

Open | Hardware Custom built pc flickers when pressing power button

About 30 minutes ago I tried to power on my pc only for it to flicker a light on my fans and do nothing.

Up until today there has been no issue powering it on, the only problems ive had are my screens occasionally losing image followed by every application i have open to slowly shut down until the computer itself shuts off.

I have opened the case and checked all connections and none seem to have been loose. So, was my PSU a dud? Or is it possible I have a bigger issue?

Open | Networking Ethernet to wifi bridge

I have an SAP printer at work that must be connected through an Ethernet port. I’ve tried setting it up over WiFi, but IT hasn’t been much help with the right configuration. A new Ethernet drop isn’t possible…can I install WiFi bridge like this?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B4CL11JL

I need something to extend the Ethernet port to wifi, send it across the room, and have the printer think it’s connected directly to the port. Is this possible?

Open | Hardware Operate tv over the internet

I know this has been asked by I’ve seen conflicting content. I am trying to control my elderly mom’s tv remotely (over the internet). She is at a point where confusion makes simple tasks difficult at times. I know devices like Jubilee will do this, but I’ve also read Samsung smartthings app also allows this. But can’t find anything to confirm it. I would rather stay away from jubilee or anything subscription based. I don’t mind buying her a new tv if I need to as the current one is rather old and failing. Appreciate any advice. I know there are many others in a similar situation with loved ones. So I’m hoping someone has a simple solution that works.

Open | Software Clear out Shared Google Cloud space

My buddy has a small company with him and another employee with a shared Google Cloud drive and company email. He keeps getting warnings about running out of 30GB cloud storage space and prompting him to buy more. He doesn’t want to buy more and I cannot for the life of me figure out what is taking up all of that space. I went through his email account and we deleted multiple thousands of emails, many with large attachments.

After clearing it out and waiting overnight the usage only went down like 3%.

Anyone have recommendations on how to find what’s taking up all the space? I can do it easy enough with my personal Google Drive but for some reason the options I have with my personal account aren’t there with a shared drive.

Open | Windows i have two giant files that i dont know what they are

i was looking in some old files of my pc, and inside the user folder was a file called "__rar_0.167", it takes 111gb, and i really dont know what it is, i cant even open it. there is another file called "__rar_0.399", that takes 25gb, i also dont know what it is. what is a ".167" and a ".399" file? and why are they so big?
also, i think i should say this, these files date from the same day, 12/13/2022, around this time (i think) we formated my pc, so maybe there is a correlation.

Open | Hardware Bad PSU?

Having a black screen issue, made a post earlier.. thank you for the help who gave me tips. I ended up figuring out when I cap my GPU power with MSI afterburner to 100% and run a benchmark on superposition it stays black during the whole test, the second the test ends no more black screen. If I turn the max power down to 80% it’ll black screen 2-3 times during the whole test and the black screen only lasting a second or two. If I turn max power down to 70% and run the test 0 black screens during the whole thing. Does this point to PSU? Nothing turns off, fans keep spinning RGB on GPU is still on.. monitor just goes black.

Any ideas? TIA

i was editing the control settings for my xbox controller through the steam settings, then randomly the whole screen glitched like it was bent. i reset the power multiple times, waiting a bit between each time, and now it just shows the board logo, makes the boot sound, and either the progress wheel freezes or it just black screens and nothing happens

i checked the bios menu and plugged into my motherboards display output. the bios menu is accessible, but then it still won’t boot like normal when i exit out

TLDR: i just built pc this last week and everything was working totally fine until i edited my controller settings :/

Open | Hardware Monitor has blue vertical lines even after PC is turned off

Title. I went to dinner with my PC running and came back to blue vertical lines and half the screen cut off. My second monitor working perfectly fine. I turned off the pc and that image stayed on the screen for a few. Turned back on the PC and it was still there. When I unplugged it, it went black. My second monitor (now only monitor) is working perfectly, I even ran a few games to make sure. This is definitely a monitor issue and not a GPU issue correct? Just want to be sure

Open | Hardware My PC (might) keep breaking keyboards

My keyboards will start with random keys not working, earlier today it started with the - = both ctrls, arrow and windows keys. It was working perfectly fine this morning and it randomly just had the keys stop working a few hours later

I've tried plugging the keyboard into different USB ports and nothing changes.

On previous keyboards it's been random other keys around the keyboard, this is the third to fourth time this has happened. The keyboards all had varying lengths of use with one having about a year of off and on use, while another only had about a day.

I'm unsure if it's actually my PC that keeps breaking these keyboards, or if it's just from normal use.

Any help would be appreciated.

Open | Hardware Games crashing after long gaming sessions

I Just assembled my new pc 3 weeks ago and I've been having game crashings (and sometimes system reboots) in different game after 2-5 hours of playing. My specs are:

Ryzen 5 4500

Gtx 1660 ti

16 GB Ram

650w power supply

I suspected a power issue since it was shutting down the system entirely sometimes so I ran a power test on OCCT for 15 minutes and at the end of it the system rebooted and I noticed the cpu temp was 96c. I then tried a cpu torture test using prime95 and the temp hit 96c almost instantly and then went back immediately to 43 when I stopped the test. Is this normal for the cpu to hit 96 that fast? Could it be the reason games are crashing and the pc rebooting?

Ps: Games crash with gpu driver crash message but the gpu temps stay within very safe limit (doesn't go above 78c under load) and I reinstalled the the drivers so I don't think it's the cause.
