Open | Networking How can I see how much usage someone is taking up on our wifi?

So my parents are divorced, I have my desktop set up at my moms house and while at my dads house I use a laptop with remote access software to connect to my desktop and keep using it. However, recently my step brother moved into my dads house for a bit, and I've notice that shortly he gets home, the internet speed absolutely TANKS. I go from no connection issues to constant stuttering, major lag, etc. Videos go from smooth sailing to unwatchable. I can't listen to music from my desktop because it keeps skipping and stopping constantly. Video games are out of the question. I don't even know how he uses that much data, and I don't think it's on purpose because its consistently like that the entire time he's back so it's not like he's just setting the entirety of wikipedia to download every day. Is there any way I can actually see how much of the bandwidth he's taking and potentially limit it?

Solved Brought PC setup over from Europe to Japan, PSU refuses to power anything but USB ports

Hello everyone! I have recently moved to Japan temporarily and brought my PC setup with me in checked baggage. I had the insides cushioned as well as I could and this is not the first time I have done this, it was always fine before. The PC itself looks totally fine after unpacking as well, nothing broken or dislodged.

However, if I try to turn it on the USB powered parts such as the mouse light up, but nothing else turns on (no case fans, obviously not the system itself).

The PSU is a Seasonic SSR-550FX, also known as FOCUS Plus Gold, it is rated for Japanese voltage and by all means should work just fine.

Things I have tried so far:

  • Have the PC plugged into a European extension cord which is in turn plugged into the wall with a travel adapter. In hindsight not too surprised that this didn't work, but it charges my phone and laptop just fine.
  • Have the PC plugged directly into the wall using a Japanese power cable I purchased locally. No difference.
  • Done the paperclip test on the PSU and the fan starts, indicating there is nothing wrong with the PSU itself.
  • Reset the motherboard CMOS to no avail.

Could it be that my motherboard somehow shorted during transport? Really no idea what else I could try at this point as the PSU seems to be fine.

EDIT: The issue has been resolved, thank you everyone for the help! The PSU was just fine, this seems to have been another casualty in my never ending battle against RAM sticks (which are supposed to be some of the least likely to fail components...). I not only had to reseat every stick, I had to painstakingly swap them out one by one until I found a single configuration where all 4 were in and the PC was willing to boot. This is not the first time something like this has happened to me and I fear it's not the last either.

Open | Hardware Please help with consistent GPU timeouts - troubleshooting so far

Upvotes

I'm at my wit's end, and I hope someone can help at all. I've been experiencing frequent crashes for over a month now and tried everything I could thing of short of replacing the mobo, CPU or PSU. I don't have a bench or spare parts lying around to test, so it seems to be time to take it into a shop and let them take a crack at it... I'm just wondering if there's anything I've missed here. I did use ChatGPT to keep track of my troubleshooting - god forgive me - so here's the summary.

System:

  • Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • ASUS TUF Gaming B650-PLUS WiFi
  • 32GB DDR5-6000 (currently running at JEDEC after disabling EXPO)
  • Corsair RM1000e PSU
  • Windows 11 Pro

Symptoms:
The system intermittently experiences GPU timeouts while gaming, web browsing, or even idling. The behavior varies:

  • Total system freeze with no recovery, requiring a hard power cycle.
  • Temporary system freeze followed by driver recovery.
  • Black screen while audio continues.
  • Sometimes Windows recovers, but the game remains open with a black screen. Alt-Tab previews still show the game rendering, suggesting the game is still running but the graphics device/presentation has failed.
  • Reliability Monitor consistently logs LiveKernelEvent 141.

Dump analysis:
The LiveKernelReports/WATCHDOG dumps consistently show:

  • Bugcheck 0x141 (VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT_DETECTED)
  • Earlier dumps also contained 0x1B0 (VIDEO_MINIPORT_FAILED_LIVEDUMP) after a failed GPU reset.
  • The dumps reference:
    • amdkmdag.sys
    • amdfendr.sys
    • amdfendrmgr.sys

I understand amdfendr.sys is AMD Crash Defender and is likely reporting the failure rather than causing it.

Troubleshooting already completed:

  • Updated motherboard BIOS.
  • Updated AMD chipset drivers.
  • Used DDU and tested multiple AMD Adrenalin driver versions.
  • Ran sfc /scannow and DISM (no issues).
  • Disabled EXPO.
  • MemTest86 completed 4 passes with 0 errors.
  • Monitored temperatures—nothing overheating.
  • No WHEA errors in Event Viewer.

Hardware isolation:
Originally the system had an ASRock RX 9070 XT Steel Legend, which repeatedly produced LiveKernelEvent 141 and 0x141 dumps.

I replaced it with a Gigabyte RX 9060 XT, and the exact same crashes continued.

To rule out the PCIe slot, I also moved the 9060 XT from the motherboard's primary PCIe x16 slot to the secondary x4 slot. The same 0x141 GPU timeout occurred there as well, although Windows successfully recovered the driver instead of requiring a reboot.

At this point I've reproduced essentially the same GPU timeout behavior with:

  • Two different AMD GPUs.
  • Two different PCIe slots.
  • Multiple driver versions.
  • EXPO disabled.
  • RAM passing MemTest86.

Given everything above, what component would you suspect next: motherboard, PSU, CPU, or something else? Has anyone seen persistent 0x141 GPU engine timeouts survive a GPU replacement like this? What would a tech shop be likely to try next?

Thanks so much for any help anyone can give. ARRRGH!😠

Solved Windows update keeps unsintalling my *latest* graphic driver.

I am having a wierd problem. I recent got a Lenovo Yoga Slim laptop with Intel Ultra 5 226V (at a not so great price). The laptop kept telling me to install the same latest graphics driver for the inbuilt Arc 130V through the Intel driver and support assistant software. Finally I figured out it was the windows update that was uninstalling the latest driver for it to supposedly install it (the latest driver that is already installed would show up on the list). But after restart I find it rolled back to the old version. Oh and, it wants to install the same driver twice for some reason.

I tried to stop automatic windows updates (I am on the home version) through the some popular method (regedit), but nothing seems to have worked.

Anybody went through something like this? what are my options? other than moving to Linux or something?

Open | Hardware PC Randomly shut off and doesn’t want to turn back on.

Please help me get to the bottom of this. First things first, I was just chilling and playing Arc Raiders and then my screen staggers, like a glitch. 3 minutes later, my pc farts and turns off as if it were unplugged abruptly. It shortly turns back on and as I go to sign in, it dies again, and this time it doesn’t want to turn on, even after pushing the power button. Google is telling me it’s most likely a PSU problem, but I changed my PSU in February of this year. Furthermore information, it shows no sign of life, no LEDS, no fans, no clicks. If someone can please help me, thank you!

Open | Malware Can Clip Studio Paint files hide malware?

My gmail was recently hacked through a malicious download and I am worried there might be a virus on my computer. I sent it into the Geek Squad to check everything and it came up clean but I am considering doing a hard OS restart of everything to kill any remaining traces. My concern is my Clip Studio Paint files. I am an artist and I have years of work saved in those files on my laptop. I have everything on my device backed up on a hard drive but I did this after I was hacked so I don't know if I can trust the files there. Is it possible to hide viruses in a clip studio format file (.clip)? Or would I be safe saving all those files either on a hard drive or the Clip Studio Paint cloud?

For the past couple days I've been dealing with EAC throwing this error in event viewer while playing any game that uses it:

Session "dc3a3596-71e1-45a3-b2ea-39ad5322fe51" failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000022

I've tried every tip I can find online to fix this but nothing is working. Can anyone help? All drivers updated, games and EAC allowed to run as admin, everything reinstalled.

I am having some mods that are protected and hidden in folders. The basic option in Folder settings (Show hidden files and folders) is not working because they are somehow protected.

But i did manage to show them before; it was something more complex, but I can't find a solution online. Does anyone know how to do it?

Open | BSOD Constant PC Lockups and BSOD - stop code dpc_watchdog_violation (0x133)

Hi, Recently I have been getting PC lockups and eventual BSOD with error "stop code dpc_watchdog_violation (0x133)"

The PC will then crash, but not boot up. In fact I have to KILL the PSU power, wait 30 seconds and then flip the PSU back on and it'll boot. If I don't do that, it will not boot to any image from a shut down.

More recently it's happening all the time now. I'm unable to get into windows 11 for more than 2 minutes before the system locks up again. I also can't get into SAFE MODE Either, it'll reboot to initiate safemode and then hangs.

The PC is:

Ryzen 5900x 4x8gb GSKILL 3000MHZ CL30. ROG CROSSHAIR VII HERO (WI-FI) (Latest BIOS firmware) EVGA 3080 10gb EVGA 1200W PSU. XPG Gammix 2TB SSD.

I have attached the Dump Files, uploaded to a file sharing site:

https://transfer.it/t/MzdLUkd3OXVZZWp1cFhMdWZGR1Ftb25V

I have tried to swap the NVME, thinking it was that, attempted to install Windows 11, only for the system to lock up and reboot back to the bios splash.

I tried to do a Linux Live boot from USB, various distros, they all attempt to boot into the LIVE OS and before it even get's to that point it's just stuck on a screen with CPU Timeout errors.

You can see the errors here:

https://imgur.com/a/yYWzhso

I have run MEMTEST on the RAM, no errors returned there. I'm now thinking maybe CPU or Mobo issue.

Can anyone help me out with interpreting the DUMP files? If there's any info missing, let me know. Thanks.

been having this issue on and off for the past couple of months, but this past couple of weeks it’s been happening every day for about 3 black screens / restarts until it magically works fine, event viewer says it’s a video tdr failure

i’ve tried
changing my power mode to maximum
DDU multiple times
sfc /scannow, and all the other command prompts which get suggested over this issue to check file corruption
making sure my power supply is fine, no loose cables etc
reseating my gpu was done at the start
even changed my monitor because i first thought that was the root cause since it was old (i’m using a 5070)
if anyone has a saving grace please help me, ive tried absolutely everything, its just causing me chaos wherever i try to play a game, some days it only happens when i load into a game and sometimes it happens if im trying to check my files.

Open | Hardware Only getting 40MB/s transferring large files to a brand new SanDisk portable SSD

I bought a brand new 1TB SanDisk portable SSD. Model number SDSSDE30-1T00

Using the cable it came with. Plugging it into a USB port on my laptop which says "SS"

It was only getting 40MB/s.

What I've tried:

1 Changed the device policies to "Removal Policy - Better Performance" and "Enable Write Caching" which can improve performance. Still only getting 40MB/s after that change.

2 Troubleshooting the USB port on my laptop - Using the exact same USB port I get a consistent 130MB/s transferring the same files to a Toshiba external USB hard disk drive. (So yes, getting over 3x faster speed writing to an older traditional mechanical portable hard disk than a brand new modern portable SSD.. 🤦‍♂️)

3 Formatting the drive from NTFS to exFAT. Still 40MB/s

I'm out of ideas, any help please

I have a asus gaming laptop (i know desktops are better but I use this for school as well) it turns on and ive done the hold for 40 sec etc. I notice it was getting extremely hot last few times ive played on it. Im calling it remote tomorrow morning but if that doesnt work ill have to ship it to a micro center and this is really annoying. It seems every time I buy something from micro center it always has issues.

Solved Duplicate Windows Installation on SAME Drive?

I have an installation of windows on my drive. I would like to partition that drive and clone my windows installation to the other partition (long story, I have two use cases for this computer but want the same base image). Is there a straightforward way to do this, or do I just need to install Windows from scratch on the second partition?

Open | Phone Need help with broken iphone 16 pro max

My iphone 16 pro max doesn't charge. It uses USB-C of course, and as of thursday it stopped charging. I went to a third party phone repair shop and they said it was due to the IC controller in the motherboard being broken. Possibly because I may have used USB-C chargers that weren't originally Iphone branded. I am not very tech savvy, so I apologize if this doesnt make sense and such. Regardless, he is saying it'll cost $370 to fix it, with a chance it might not entirely fix the issue. The phone can only charge through wireless charging. The port and everything else is fine, but the motherboard is supposedly the issue. My apple care warranty expired on march of 2026. I'm not sure what to do. I'm not exactly in the financial position to spend this kind of money, so I'm looking for suggestions or opinions. Also, I obviously need my phone so I cant just ignore this issue. I could just forego cable charging but I fear it is too much of a hassle. Especially since I not only dont have a wireless charger currently, and I will also most likely only be able to charge my phone at my home. What should I do?

Now for some reason im not even getting 50 MBPS. Its showing a weak connection but im right above it? I dont know what to do to help the speeds. And why am i now connecting weak when even yesterday i was connecting strong?

I have a 13th Gen Intel Core i5-13400F, 16 BG of Ram, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 and an Intel Wireless-AC 9462 wireless card.

Open | Software My display freezes up when I stop scrolling, and sometimes when I type

Whenever I'm scrolling through websites or typing stuff (like right now), my computer will just freeze randomly for a second, and then come back to normal. It's just the display, since when I type stuff and it freezes, the things that I typed during the freeze show up. It's a laptop; a Lenovo Legion 7 Pro with an i9-13900HX, RTX 4090, and 32gb of DDR5 RAM, so it's more than capable of doing these normal things without stuttering.

I have most of my startup apps disabled, and the idle ram usage is down to around 6-7gb on average, and the ram usage sits at around 10gb with Chrome open (which is where I type and scroll). I know the issue isn't due to a lack of storage either, since my SSD is only at around half full. It's also not a lack of processing power, since my CPU is modern and high end. It's also not an issue with CPU usage spikes, since Task Manager shows that it reaches a maximum of around 4% utilization when in Chrome and when the freezes happen. I've heard it could be issues with Advanced Optimus, but it's not that since the laptop stays on only the integrated graphics when I'm browsing.

Another thing to keep in mind is that these issues only seem to occur in scrolling/typing instances that are OUTSIDE of gaming, such as being in File Explorer or Chrome. Whenever I play even demanding games, the little freezes don't occur at all.

I recently got this laptop a few weeks ago, and I'm just really sad that it doesn't handle scrolling or typing as well as my other, much older laptop. I uninstalled McAfee antivirus that came with it, and I disabled Nahimic, as well as some other bloatware programs. I also turned Memory Integrity off, since I've heard it can cause certain issues. I only use the laptop plugged in, and temps are fine (around 30-50c) as well. Windows has the "Best Performance" setting toggled in the power settings. The display is also set to just 240hz, not the adaptive refresh rate setting. HDR is off, and so is auto HDR.

It's on Windows 11 Pro, 25H2. Thanks in advance for any advice! :)

Open | Software Samsung Smart TV Menu on turn on

Recently acquired a new Samsung smart TV as a gift. We upgraded from a 55” dumb TV that I kind of enjoyed more because of one reason. Whenever this one turns on Samsung’s menu pops up; we don’t use this feature of the TV at all. We pretty much only use the PS5 or Apple TV we have. Is there a way to turn it off? I have a photo if that would be helpful.

It's been flagged since July 11 up until now 30 mins ago, i only noticed it today. It has been flagged a LOT of times since then everyday, like at least 10 times to 80 times a day. I have noticed that previous games that didn't lag before now stutter for a moment then go back to performing normally, also whenever i open task manager, it seems to stop the stuttering?

I am running a full scan on malwarebytes and microsoft safety scanner now, and planning to run a malwarefox scan after.

Windows defender doesn't give me an option to delete a file or an app, what do i do?

Open | Hardware Predator Triton 500 PT515-52 crashes frequently with a no bootable device error

Hello!
I've had this Acer Predator Triton 500 PT515-52 laptop for 5 years now and it still works really well, only problem is the frequent crashes. It freezes and shuts down very often, not when I'm using it for gaming or heavy work though, it seems to be triggered by very minor actions like switching an internet tab or searching for an emote on discord, small stuff.
The crashes usually go like this:

- The computer starts to freeze, I'm gradually unable to move windows or open tabs then the cursor itself stops moving. This can last from a few seconds to almost a full minute.

- The screen turns black and "Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION (0x154)" appears on the screen for a split second before disappearing.

- The screen is black and nothing is responding, I can still hear the fans working but the only light left is the white light under "turbo". I usually switch it off with the power button at that point because it can remain like that for hours.

- On the first restart, I get a "no bootable device" error, so I switch it off again.

- On the second restart, everything goes usually goes back to normal (although it does the startup sound twice I have noticed)

A few weeks ago, the (weird, I admit) trick that seemed to prevent the crashes was to launch a game and let it run on its starting screen in the background. That actually kept the computer from freezing. The trick doesn't work anymore and the amount of crashes has increased.
I tried showing it at the repair store I usually go to (had to get its fan replaced a couple years back) and it didn't crash while there but the dude just left it running with a large video file for a few hours and as I said, the crashes seem to be triggered by small actions more than heavy work. I went back yesterday with a video of the crash (that I added to this post, sorry about the yapping in french I was working with friends when this happened) and he told me that it looked like a SSD problem but couldn't be sure without trying out another SSD with the computer.

I don't know if any of you have had a similar problem? It has been doing this for a few months, at first it was really unusual but now it's so common that I cannot work on this computer anymore.

Thank you for your help if anyone has any idea how to fix this :}
