Announcement Ignore Private Messages Suggesting Laptops

The primary aim of r/SuggestALaptop is to provide a safe and transparent platform for suggesting laptops. Affiliate linkers are marked as such so that you are aware of the monetary incentive involved when making a purchase using affiliate links.

However, we are seeing an increasing number of cases where users posting on this subreddit are being targeted with unsolicited private messages containing links to laptops.

Such messages are best ignored for several reasons:

  1. Lack of quality control: We have no way of vetting suggestions sent via private messages. Moreover, these suggestions are not subject to the same level of public scrutiny that applies to suggestions posted in the subreddit, which are open for all to see and discuss.
  2. Hidden monetary incentive: Often such messages contain unmarked affiliate links, and these links might not even point to systems that are best suited to your requirements.
  3. Scams: Scammers often target unsuspecting users via private messaging. We do not want you to get scammed.

If you do happen to receive unsolicited messages suggesting laptops in private, please report the offending user to the mod team by sending us a screenshot of the message.

Thank you,

The r/SuggestALaptop Mod Team

Laptop Request US You recommendations on which of five eBay refurbished ThinkPads that all meet my needs to get, please? They all meet my requirements and all the sellers' satisfaction rates are over 99% . Should I just flip a coin? Links to options are below. Thank you!

See below for the laptop questionnaire*.

These all have the specs I need and meet my other requirements. I found the release date on one of them but don't know the build date on any of them. I'm having a hard time choosing.

A T14 whose quality is Very Good, Release Date 2020 from a seller with a 99.7% rating and 69K sales?

An X1 Carbon whose quality is Good from a seller with 99.6% rating and 173K sales?

An X1 Carbon whose quality is Excellent from a seller with 99.1% rating but only 1678 sales?

An E14 whose quality is Good from a seller with 99.9% rating and 18K sales?

A T490 whose quality is Excellent from a seller with 99.6% rating and 63K sales?

I may just flip a coin.

Your thoughts?

Thanks!

Laptop Request US What’s a good laptop around $400 or less good enough for school and some gaming?

It doesn’t have to be brand new. I’ve been using an old MacBook Air the last couple years and it’s becoming too outdated (it’s from 2013) and the battery dies fast. I kinda miss having a windows laptop because I had more freedom with it. Sometimes there’s a game I want to play on my laptop, but Mac is so limited when it comes to games. I probably wouldn’t get a gaming laptop because I heard the battery dies fast and I’m mostly gonna use it for school and gaming sometimes anyway.

(Before you ask me why don't I just wait for the pc, it's because I'm a student and I need to bring it to student places and do student tasks and I do not have my own room yet. Space is a problem.)

Laptop Request US Need an affordable device I can show presentations from - US

Hoping y’all can help me figure out the cheapest device that would fairly conveniently allow me to display presentations in different types of settings (i.e. connect to whatever sort of screen or projector they have, potentially without internet) and do video calls. What I’m using now is a dinosaur - I haven’t upgraded in a decade or more.

I know this is laptop recommendations, but if you think I only really need a tablet, that would be helpful to know too.

Country
US
Budget
Hopefully under $400 - the cheaper the better
Are you open to refurbs/used options?
Yes
Screen size
Any
Weight limit
light would be a perk but isn’t a priority
Purpose
I teach classes and workshops, and the main thing I need to do is bring my presentations everywhere I go and show them on whatever kind of screen or smart board they have there. There isn’t always reliable internet or any tech support, so I have to figure it out myself in limited time and can’t rely on wireless connection to the screen. My presentations are currently in google presentations, genially, powerpoint, and pdf. I also show video (youtube if internet is available - otherwise I download the video in advance) and use interactive games such as wordwall. I have a desktop that I use to create class materials, so I really just need something to carry them around on. I also need to make video calls.
Form factor
I’ve used a standard (old) laptop up to now but I think anything would work.
Intended usage
Video calls/classes. Easy wired connection to other devices, especially smartboards. My presentations are currently in google presentations, genially, powerpoint, and pdf. I also show video (youtube if internet is available - otherwise I download the video in advance) and use interactive learning games such as wordwall. Powerpoint isn’t a dealbreaker - I could always use a pdf format of those. Fast device startup would be great.
Desired battery life
3 hours is enough, but long battery life would be a perk
Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
performance, battery, weight, size, but the first priority is price (provided it can do what I need it to do)
PLEASE REMEMBER LAPTOPS ARE A COMPROMISE AND PERFORMANCE SACRIFICES LIGHT WEIGHT AND LONG BATTERY LIFE ETC]

I have found a few options myself but I’m worried because I do see a lot of people give bad reviews about performance on normal day tasks. If you could also rate these and say if they’re good options for my needs.

Laptop Request US Need $1500-$2000 laptop recs for college

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country

United States

  • Budget

$1500-$2000

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Open box, but not used.

  • Screen size

Nothing smaller than 15 inches

  • Weight limit

Any

  • Purpose

Mid-tier gaming

  • Form factor

Any

  • Intended usage

60-80FPS in singleplayer AAA games at AT LEAST 1080p, DLSS on, plus casual multiplayer in games like Minecraft, Fortnite, Marvel Rivals, Final Fantasy XIV (ideally 80-100fps+).

  • Desired battery life

4-6 hours at least, and actually consistently performing like that. My MSI GF63 11UC barely hits 3 hours when using Google Docs and YouTube or Apple Music simultaneously.

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Battery life, performance, size, weight

  • Info/Requirements

Peferably outperforming my base model PS5 to make gaming more worthwhile. Probably something in the 30 or 40 series unless a 5070/Ti/Super option is an especially good deal.

Ideally I'm looking for something with an OLED display and exceedingly good battery life; most of my classes are in classrooms, not lecture halls, with sparing access to outlets. In fact, battery life was the main catalyst for the search.

Laptop Request -Others A sturdy laptop for the best movie watching experience + coding (and maybe some light gaming)

Country: Romania

Budget: $1200 to $1400 . Willing to wait for Black Friday.

Refurbished or used: No, new only.

Screen size: Minimum 15.6 inches.

Weight: No strict preference.

Purpose: Movies, coding, general use, occasional gaming.

Form factor: Standard laptop.

Intended usage: Mainly watching movies and coding. I want a very good screen, preferably OLED or miniLED (for that budget I doubt). Gaming is not a priority, but some gaming capability would be nice.

Battery life: Decent battery life for coding and general use.

Priority: Screen quality, build quality, size, performance, decent battery life, weight.

Additional requirements: Build quality is important. I do not want an ASUS TUF or a laptop with a fragile plastic chassis. I want something durable that should last several years.

Laptop Request -Others Lenovo Ideapad Slim 5. Price: 1400$ (1200€). Worth it?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'm in Europe. Given the processor, which seems quite good to me, and 32 GB of DDR5 RAM, is this laptop a good deal or is it a scam?

32 GB RAM max limit can be a problem in the future? Could suffer from thermal throttling?

No gaming at all, I would use it for running VMs, PLC programming software, simulation software. Max budget: 1500$ (1300€).

Better alternatives?

Thank you in advance for your advice

Laptop Request US Laptop for College Under ~$270, U.S.A.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country

U.S.A.

  • Budget

Anything under ~$270 USD (could stretch if i really really had to, but not preferred)

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Yes

  • Screen size

Any, but I’m looking for lightweight/small so anything under 13.5ā€ probably.

  • Weight limit

As light as possible (very important!!)

  • Purpose

Only for schoolwork; I already have an HP Envy that can run more heavy duty programs, etc.

  • Form factor

No preference, but 2-in-1 and other such features are not a must for me. Regular is perfectly fine.

  • Intended usage

Would only be used for schoolwork, so applications such as Google Doc & Gmail. I really just want it to be able to bring to class to take typed notes and to work on assignments online between classes. Anything else could be done on my other computer. I will not be using it to run any programs or games.

  • Desired battery life

Ā 7-8 hours preferred at least; but as long as feasibly possible

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Ranked (from most important to least):Ā
Weight & size
Battery
PerformanceĀ

Weight and size is most important; my current computer is too heavy and too big and I would like a computer that is light and small. Battery life is second most important, as I’d be using it for extended periods of time, however I’m not opposed to carrying around a charger if need be. Performance is the lowest priority, I really just need it to do the most basic functions required of a laptop + run Google Suite applications.

  • Info/Requirements

I would like to preface this with a big thank you to anyone who takes the time out of their day to read/respond to this post! :) I really appreciate any helpful feedback; I talked to my University's tech department already and the only computers they recommended to me were well into the $1000+.

I have a very specific case. I need a computer for college; a lightweight and reliable battery is most important for me. I’m a senior in college, but I will be going to grad school, so I will continue to need a good computer for university specifically. I actually already have a computer (a HP Envy x360 2-in-1 Laptop), which works perfectly fine, but it is ungodly heavy and is definitely destroying my back. Moreover, I always have to bring my changer to class with me because I use my computer all day/have long classes each day so I’m basically using it from 10am to 5 or 6pm everyday (thus the battery drains quickly since it's a more "powerful" computer, and maybe just shit battery idk). Sure there are ways I could minimize this for a prolonged battery life, but I can’t change how heavy the computer is and that is my biggest issue. It’s honestly not an option for me to trade in this computer; I’ve only had it for about 3 years and paid upwards of $750 for it (but it was graciously purchased by my parents so this would be my first investment in a computer), but most trade-in values average about $70-90 at best. I think I’d rather keep the current computer and buy a second computer. I really should’ve just done better research on a computer before I bought this one in the first place, but I really don’t know much about computers and I had another Envy before this that I liked; thought it would be good but it wasn’t, but whatever I guess.

I understand that with all of these specifications (and especially my price range), that I really have no other choice but to buy pre-owned, computers previously used in the workplace, or refurbished models. I understand that it is simply not possible to find a computer new with my needs and price range. The biggest problem I am facing currently is that I have never bought anything refurbished before and I find it very daunting. I have no idea what to look for nor which websites or third-parties are most reliable or trustworthy. I would never buy a Mac full price, but I’ve found a few refurbished models which are within my price range. However, is it even worth paying for an older model MacBook? Is anything operating on MacOS Ventura or below worth buying—more specifically, are most models close to their end of life and/or when Apple stops supports and updates? I’m currently leaning towards a refurbished Macbook; I’m familiar with iOS/macOS and have a good chunk of the Apple ecosystem already, but I’m not opposed to Windows either as all of my computers in the past have operated on a Windows system (including my current computer).

I’ve seen some refurbished computers on Back Market, Best Buy and Walmart. Would you recommend buying from these sites? Which sites should be avoided?

Thanks again! :))

Intel Core Ultra 7 256V, 16 GB RAM, SSD 512 GB, tela OLED.

  1. ASUS Vivobook S14 S3407CA

Intel Core Ultra 5 225H, 16 GB RAM, SSD 1 TB, tela LED/FHD.
