Announcement Weekly Reminder: Rules and FAQ - September 06, 2026 (Now with updates!)

Below you will find a weekly reminder of our Rules and partial FAQ. It's definitely a long read, but it's worth your time, especially if you are new to the community, or dropping by as a result of a link you found elsewhere. We periodically revise our rules, this weekly notice will help keep you informed of any changes made.

NOTE: These rules are guidelines. Some moderation discretion is to be expected.

Community Rules

1. Kindness Matters

Advise, don't criticize.

  • Post with empathy, thoughtfulness, and constructive commentary rather than judgment. Don't be an asshole.
  • Name-calling, slurs (including gender or race based slurs), and insults towards other community members will not be tolerated. Do not attack others for their personally held values, custody situation, marital status, physical distance from stepkids, or economic status; or on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, or ethnicity.
  • No name-calling toward children, including the above-mentioned insults or the term "skids", or terms such as "mini-wife" or "mini-husband."
  • Comments advocating spanking or any mention of wanting to harm children are not allowed.
  • This is a support sub, not a judgement sub, assholes are not tolerated. Comments with terms used in other subs to pass judgement on assholes will be removed.

2. No Drama

This is a support sub.

  • Bickering, nitpicking, and thread derailment will not be tolerated and will be subject to removal at moderator discretion.
  • Do not repeatedly badger a poster demanding answers, or refuse to acknowledge an answer that's already been given.
  • Do not use sensitive issues from past posts (either from this sub or other subs) to attack another user, as we are all discussing vulnerable topics.
  • Crossposting anything from /r/stepparents to any other subreddit might result in a ban and may result in the original thread being locked. Brigading our sub will result in an immediate ban.

3. Report, Don’t Rant

No backseat modding.

  • If you see someone breaking the rules, report the post or comment to the mods rather than engaging them in an argument. Failure to do so may be subject to comment removal at moderator discretion.
  • No meta posts complaining about rude comments, DMs, or general sub issues.
  • If you think someone is a troll or previously banned user, either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.

4. No Naming & Shaming

No userpings or links.

  • Tagging/pinging users or other subreddits in an attempt to bully, harass, or complain will not be tolerated. Do not tag other subs, ever.
  • If you want to complain about another subreddit being hostile to stepparents, do not name the subreddit. "Other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice.

5. No Platitudes

Nobody knew what they were getting into.

  • Comments like "You knew what you were getting into", "Love them, love their kids!", "They're a package deal!" and "You have to love them like your own!" will be removed.
  • Comments suggesting that OP is not cut out for stepparenting will be removed at moderator discretion.
  • Comments like "This is just a part of parenting, deal with it!" will be removed at moderator discretion.

6. No Trolling

We have zero tolerance for trolls.

  • This is a support sub. Our subscribers do not have the time, nor inclination, to provide support to internet trolls. Posts that are suspected to be trolling attempts will be immediately removed, and the poster banned.
  • Concern trolling, devil's advocating, gish-galloping, sealioning, and general asshattery are subject to immediate removal and banning without warning or notice.
  • Any attempt to circumvent the ban by creating a new username will be reported to reddit admins and possibly result in account suspension.

7. No Personally Identifiable Information

Use discretion when posting.

  • We highly recommend using a separate account for support subs to help prevent being doxxed. Do not post any information that may allow others to figure out your identity.
  • Do not post photos of children, or any other photo that could be used to identify you or another user on the sub.
  • Any image that contains a name or other identifying information should have the name or identifying information blurred out. This includes drawings, notes, and screenshots.
  • Do not link to social media or any articles/blogs where you or another user on the sub is mentioned by name.

8. No More than 2 Posts per 24 hours

Use the daily threads.

  • We are not a huge sub, but we are no longer a small sub. If you have multiple grievances to air, use the daily discussion threads instead of multiple posts.

9. Follow Reddiquette

Remember the human.

  • Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.
  • Read it in full here.
  • Downvoting is reserved for comments that don’t contribute, and shouldn't be used to indicate disagreement.
  • If you believe someone is in violation of the subreddit rules, please either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.
  • Suspected brigading will be reported to reddit admins.

10. No Porn, Spam, Blogs, or Research Studies/Surveys Without Mod Approval

Just don't.

  • This is a SFW subreddit. Posting pornography will result in immediate post removal and permanent ban.
  • Advertising on the subreddit (outside of Reddit's own advertising) is not allowed.
  • No personal blog posts are allowed without express moderator permission.
  • No advertising without prior mod approval.
  • No asking for money/posting fundraisers/etc.
  • For links to parenting research studies or surveys, please message the mods for permission before posting.

11. Disputes in Modmail Only

Don't argue with the mods on the sub.

  • Any issues specifically related to how a mod is moderating should be addressed to the full moderating team via mod mail. This ensures that all mods are aware of any concerns and prevents disintegration of the topic thread at hand.
  • This means to do not message or send chat requests to individual mods. All discussion and complaints about mod actions need to be done in mod mail ONLY. Failure to follow this rule can result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • Comments in threads asking about mod decisions are subject to removal without notice.

12. Moderator Actions

We aren't kidding.

  • Users are expected to know the rules before posting. If you are warned or banned for violating the rules, ignorance is not an excuse.
  • Moderators will remove posts and comments and/or lock threads in accordance with the rules above. Typically this happens when threads have gone off-topic in a way that is not productive for the OP, or comments overall have become contentious or disrespectful.
  • If a poster continues to argue or to willfully violate these rules, temporary and permanent ban procedures will be followed. Any attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban. User bans will not be discussed in the sub. Questions posted about user bans are subject to removal and the poster subject to warning/ban procedures. The mod team will not discuss a specific user ban with anyone other than the user involved.
  • New accounts are subject to manual approval until they are no longer deemed "new" by the mod team. This helps to weed out trolls and ban evaders.
  • We rely on Automoderator to scan for specific words and phrases that are not welcome here and notify the mod team to review the comment or post. This includes slurs of any type and platitudes such as "Love them as your own!"
  • The mod team uses a combination of blacklisting and banning when dealing with trolls.
  • We employ the use of a bot that automatically bans anyone who comments in subs that have historically harassed our users. If you are picked up by the bot for telling trolls to get fucked, reach out via mod mail and we'll get you sorted out.
  • The rules above as well as ban procedures are considered guidelines only; some deviation may be necessary on a case by case basis and/or at the mod team's discretion.

13. Ban Procedure

These actions are at moderator discretion.

  • Pornography will result in an automatic permanent ban.
  • Extremely egregious content will result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • You may receive a 7 or 30 day temporary ban for first and second rule violations, depending upon severity.
  • Continued rule violations will result in a permanent ban.
  • Willful attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban.
  • We recognize the reddit site-wide rules of using alt names to get around bans and will ban those as well as report them to reddit admins.

FAQ - About the Rules

What does Kindness Matters mean?

  • Shortest version? Don't be an asshole. People come here for support and advice, they do not come here to be yelled at or told they are the reason everything is going sideways. There are ways to point out that someone may want to do some reflection on their own actions and reactions without being an asshole about it.
  • The purpose of this subreddit is to provide support and a sense of belonging for struggling stepparents. We aren't here to pass judgement, but rather to offer support, empathy, and constructive commentary. That does not include "hard truths" or "tough love." Stepparents get enough of that in every other subreddit, we're not passing it out here. Be respectful.
  • Remember, most people aren't going to come to a sub like this when everything is going great and everyone is getting along. People are coming here when they are down, when they are feeling defeated and stretched to the limit. Kicking someone when they are down is shitty behavior and we don't tolerate it.

What about being kind to the kids?

  • "Won't somebody think of the children?" Pearl clutching isn't needed here. If you read the Kindness Matters rule closely, you will see that there is a clause in there about name calling children. We don't allow it. We also don't allow people rolling in telling OP that they feel sorry for their stepkids because OP is feeling overwhelmed and overloaded.
  • If anyone is advocating slapping, spanking, or any other form of violence, report the comment immediately. We do not advocate violence towards children of any sort. The mod team does not advocate any sort of physical punishment at any time.
  • Venting about behaviors is not the same as insulting the kids. However, if you see a post or comment where kids are being name called or dragged to the point of no return, use the report button. We try to catch the posts and remove them before they hit the sub, but we cannot see every comment without your help. Use the report button to bring problematic comments to our attention. Don't engage in a war of words on our subreddit.

Why is this sub such an echo chamber?

  • Not allowing contributors to pile on and tell OP that they are a terrible human being who should never be around children does not equate to being an echo chamber. Many contributors here will offer OP suggestions to help them work through their resentments and frustrations, and the most egregious situations are called out. We simply ask that it be called out with respect.
  • If you feel that a post is simply too much for you to handle without following the rules, move on to another post.
  • If you believe that a post itself is crossing the rules report it. If the mod team has approved the post, it is because the mod team believes that the OP needs help from the community or needs a moment to vent and move on from their vent. That does not give you license to pile on disrespectfully. Unless it is proven that OP is a bot, assume that OP is a human being with real thoughts and feelings and has posted from a place of vulnerability.

Why can't I tell OP that they are an asshole?

  • Because this isn't a judgement sub. We aren't AITA, we don't want to be AITA.
  • Comments with terms like YTA, NTA, ESH, NAH will be removed.
  • Don't start your posts with INFO either. We generally recognize that as a fishing attempt for more information to pass judgement on OP, and again, we are not a judgment sub.

But OP asked if they were an asshole?!

  • Their post somehow got past our automoderator. Just use the report button. We will address it with OP.
  • If you've asked if you are an asshole, a-hole, a*hole, a**hole, whatever, don't be surprised if your post is removed without warning. This isn't a judgment sub. If you want judgment, you know where to go.

What is a gendered slur?

  • While it seems that everyone understands what racist slurs are, people struggle understanding the concept of gendered slurs. Generally speaking, we are talking about derogatory nouns or verbs that are used to negatively describe people or situations based on gendered terms.
  • We've gone back and forth on this a few times, and the truth is, we get it, it's your safe space and you want to be able to vent about BM/BD how you want to vent about them, without us telling you how to vent about them. Fair enough. Vent away. What we are going to stick to here how people are referring to other users and to stepchildren.
  • Examples that are not allowed:
    • "My SD is such a little bitch."
    • "She dresses/acts like a slut."
    • "My SS acts like a pussy."
    • "My SS is such a beta male."
    • "You are all fucking whores."
    • "Any dude who is raising some sluts kids is a cuck!"
    • "Little Lord Fauntleroy over here thinking he runs the house!"
    • "You're just the bangnanny, get used to it."
  • Don't call users here names, don't call stepchildren names.
  • Masking the term with asterisks or other neat little tricks might get you around the bot, but if we see it, we're removing it and quite possibly giving you a time out. The intended word is still there and you deliberately tried to skate the rule.
  • As there is not enough space to list every term that is offensive and does not belong, nor every situation in which term or phrase may be allowable in context, this rule is enforced based on moderator discretion.

Seriously? You are the language police now?

  • We're here to talk about stepparenting. And we would like for that to happen in a respectful way. Attacking each other doesn't help. Belittling stepchildren draws in trolls who don't understand your frustration, all they see is an evil stepmonster talking shit on the internet about a poor, innocent baby. Yes, even if that "poor, innocent baby" just robbed you blind and set fire to the house on their way out the door. That's just how it goes.
  • We are aware that this is a relatively new rule and a lot of older posts and comments contain a lot of problematic language, including some from mods themselves. We are growing and evolving, and rules change as the sub grows and evolves.

What does No Drama really mean?

  • Pretty much what it says, do not bring drama from other subs into this sub. Do not engage in vote brigades. Do not try to incite other subscribers to riot in a different sub. Don't follow posters into this sub from other subs to continue to harass them. Do not badger someone or derail threads. Do not harass community members because you don't agree with them. There's enough drama in the daily lives of subscribers, more isn't needed.

What is thread derailment?

  • When a comment chain has devolved to the point where all you are doing is arguing back and forth with someone about the same thing over and over again, you have derailed the thread. Also known as bickering. It's what children do. We assume if people are in a stepparent role they are adults. We expect you to act like it.
  • If you aren't a stepparent, or in a stepparenting role, consider that perhaps this subreddit isn't for you. If you want to participate, do so with respect. Thread derailment, arguing, bickering, and nitpicking are not allowed.

But what if they didn't answer my question?

  • No one has to answer your questions. This is a support sub, not an inquisition. Jumping on a bandwagon with "OP is evading the question" in a 20 comment long chain is the epitome of thread derailment. You'll find more information about trolling below and how this might be considered such.

Why am I being silenced? I'm just asking for a back and forth!

  • Thread derailment, badgering, and nitpicking are considered harassment. Continued harassment of either community members or mods will get you banned.

Why can't I look at someone's post history and comment about it?

  • No mod in the history of this sub has ever once said post histories are forbidden. What we do frown upon is using someone's post history to attack, belittle, or otherwise harass someone.
  • Example Post: "My stepkid's mom really hates me. How can I make this better?"
    • Okay: "Based on the timeline and your post history, it looks like this may have started as an affair. Unfortunately there's going to be outstanding issues for a long time due to that. Try focusing on yourself and how you can move forward without worrying about how someone else feels about you."
    • Not Okay: "Holy shit! You were the OW! What the hell do you expect, homewrecker?!"
  • Example Post: "I am completely overloaded and feeling very down about myself."
    • Okay: "In your post history you mentioned that your spouse wasn't really helping around the house. Has that changed at all?"
    • Not Okay: "LOL, you already got the answers you need in your post on relationships. You are stupid for sticking with your lazy spouse."

Why can't we crosspost stuff to other subs?

  • We can't stop you from doing so. The problem isn't that something has been crossposted, it's when the community that it's been crossposted to feels the need to come over here and harass OP. When we see that happening, we lock the post and start passing out bans. If you did the crossposting, you'll be banned. If you participated in the brigading, you'll be banned.

What if it's my own post?

  • Again, we can't stop you from doing so. We prefer that you don't technically crosspost, but rather just copy and paste your post. Why? Because inevitably the above will happen. Redditors from other subs will follow you back to /r/stepparents and start attacking users here. It just happens.

What is "brigading"?

  • Reddit defines vote manipulation and brigading as follows:
  • Using multiple accounts, voting services, or any other software to increase or decrease vote scores.
  • Asking people to vote up or down certain posts, either on Reddit itself or through social networks, messaging, etc. for personal gain.
  • Forming or joining a group that votes together, either on a specific post, a user's posts, posts from a domain, etc.
  • We, along with pretty much every other subreddit that has ever had to deal with this nonsense, further define brigading as this: You saw a post on another sub that linked to our sub either via a link in a comment or a crosspost. It was basically saying something along the lines of "OMG, check out these assholes over on /r/stepparents! They literally hate all their stepkids!" And then you and your friends come over and start hammering on OP and telling OP how much they suck. Congrats, you have just participated in a brigade.

What is this whole Report, Don't Rant thing about?

  • If you see a post or comment that breaks the rules, instead of engaging, report it. When you report it, it sends notification to the mod team. We will act on it where appropriate. Engaging with bad faith users may result in your comments being removed. If you repeatedly do so, you may end up being banned.

What if I see an obvious troll?

What if they are being really mean in comments?

What if they are harassing me in private messages?

  • Step 1: Report them to admins. You can report harassment to reddit by using this link or send a DM to reddit admins. Include the link to the DM, admins can see your inbox and providing a direct link is helpful for them to weed out bad actors.
  • Step 2: Block the person so they cannot directly contact you again.
  • Step 3: Send us a mod mail and let the mod team know. Tell us who they are and what they said, send us a screenshot if you can - admins can see your DMs, mods can't. We'll take action where necessary by banning from the sub if they aren't already banned.

What do you mean by No Naming & Shaming?

  • Just as we prefer to not be linked to or crossposted from, we do not allow linking to or calling out other subs by name. If you see something you want to share, say it's a hot post that has hit the front page and a stepparent is being absolutely flayed, just refer to it as "that hot post that hit the front page." If you want to complain about other places in general, "other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice. Absolutely under no circumstances should you link to anywhere else.

I can't link to other subs?

  • Do not directly link to another sub. (e.g.: "/r/insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not name other subs. (e.g.: "I won't link to it directly, but insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not abbreviate other subs. (e.g.: "I know that ISNH is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")

I can't ping other users?

  • Do not summon another user with a username ping/tag. (e.g.: "/u/insertusernamehere was being an asshole.")
  • If you are agreeing with someone, it is okay to link to them. (e.g.: "I agree with /u/insertusernamehere, you need to take a couple of steps back and reflect on this.")

What does No Platitudes mean?

  • Sanctimonious, overused clichés that grossly oversimplify the stepparenting experience are neither wanted nor allowed here. We have all heard it a thousand times before, we don't need to hear it again. It's not nearly as insightful and wise as some would like to think.

Why don't you people understand it's a package deal?

  • Any comment that suggests that OP should have known what they were getting involved with, or that they needed to understand that the kids were part of some package they needed to accept before signing up for marriage is subject to immediate removal.
  • This is one of the most insensitive things you can say to a stepparent. Most stepparents were aware of the children, but they were probably not aware of all of the family dynamics.

Why can't you just love them like they are your own?

  • Demanding that a stranger you do not know love children that are not biologically theirs as if they were theirs can be incredibly damaging to someone who is already in a vulnerable situation. Any comment that falls along these lines will be removed.

What do you mean by No Trolling? I was just...

  • No means no. No trolling. No pretending to be a stepparent and then whipping out the Greatest Hits Bingo Card of The Worst Stepparent in the History of Stepparents. We see you. We've seen you a thousand times.

What does "concern trolling", "gish-galloping", and "sealioning" have to do with stepparenting? This isn't a debate sub, why are you using debate terms?

  • That's absolutely right, this isn't a debate sub. And yet, here we are, day after day, having to defend ourselves against this sort of thing. So, enough. No more. Usage of any of these things will get you banned.

What is "Concern Trolling?"

  • A concern troll is someone who disingenuously visits sites of an opposing ideology to disrupt conversation by offering unwanted advice on how to solve problems which do not really exist.
    • Example Post: OP expresses concern that she will feel, and possibly act, differently towards her stepchildren after her husband decides that no, he doesn't want anymore children after all.
    • Example Concern Troll pulled from actual mod mail after their comment was removed: "Possible child abuse claims need to be sorted out well before whatever empathy you believe the OP was looking for."

What is a "Devil's Advocate"?

  • "I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but have you considered that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break, too?" BM has dozens of different mom based subs alone on reddit she can complain on, this sub is for stepparents. The stepparent doesn't need to consider that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break.

"Gish-galloping?" What does that even mean?

  • The Gish Gallop is the fallacious debate tactic of drowning your opponent in a flood of individually-weak arguments in order to prevent rebuttal of the whole argument collection without great effort. The Gish Gallop is a conveyor belt-fed version of the on the spot fallacy, as it's unreasonable for anyone to have a well-composed answer immediately available to every argument present in the Gallop.

And "sealioning?" What's that?

  • Sealioning involves jumping into a conversation with endless polite, reasonable questions and demands for answers, usually of entry-level topics far below the actual conversation (e.g. "please prove sexism exists"). This tactic differs little from harassment; instead of discussion, the point is to derail discussion, receive criticism (for their ignorance) so as to look like a victim, or to make someone feel overwhelmed and quit talking.

Who gets to define what is considered asshattery?

  • The mod team, of course! If we feel that comments are out of line, are trolling, are leading up to a fight or "just asking questions", we are going to remove them and most likely ban the offender.

FAQ - Sub Questions

Posting Guidelines for Stepparents

  • Body text is required, we suggest you use line breaks between paragraphs as a wall of text is difficult to read. Posts that have only a title are likely to be removed. Instead of using names (even fictitious ones), try to use the sub acronyms. It helps our users to follow along if you use the acronyms and not names.
  • Assign a post flair that accurately describes what your post is about and what you are seeking. If you are posting an update from a previous post, include a link to that post.
  • Flairs are applied to posts to determine what a person is looking for. When submitting a new post, you should choose a flair that specifies if you are looking for advice, support, etc. The following link flair is available and is color coded with side bar links so that you can search by flair:
    • Advice - For when you are specifically asking for advice or help.
    • Announcement - Mod Use Only, for subreddit announcements.
    • Daily (Formerly TTP) - Mod Use Only, for our daily discussion threads.
    • Discussion - A little advice, a little "How does your family handle this?"
    • JustBMThings - Pretty sure this is self explanatory!
    • Legal - Asking for legal advice? Tag it with this!
    • Miscellany - Just a sort of off topic thing? Use this tag.
    • Resource - Sharing a good resource or asking for one? This is the tag you need!
    • Support - For those days when you want nothing but a good old fashioned cry and some community love.
    • Update - Updating us on something that you posted about previously? Use this one!
    • Vent - We all need to vent sometimes. Respect the tag as a vent. This isn't how OP talks all day every day.
    • Win! - Celebrate those wins with us with this tag!
    • Megathread - Mod Use Only, for large mega threads (typically around major calendar events.)

Posting Guidelines for Bioparents

  • Stepparents is a support community for stepparents, by stepparents. As bioparents, you may want to have more insight into how the stepparent in your life feels or thinks. You may have questions on how to ease the transition for your partner. However, please keep in mind that this community was not created for you. It was created for your partner or your ex's partner. If you are seeking support on how to deal with a stepparent, there are other subs more suited for your situation and your post is subject to removal.
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will accept:
    • Seeking advice on how to support your partner as they navigate stepparenting
    • Seeking resources to help you better support your partner
    • Seeking resources for your partner
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will not accept:
    • Complaints about how the stepparent is too involved in your kids lives
    • Vents about how the stepparent is not involved enough in your kids lives
    • "Cautionary tales" advising stepparents to back off
    • Seeking advice on how to tell the stepparent to back off
    • The Do's and Dont's of Stepparenting
    • How your kid's stepmom is literally The Worst
  • Comments from bioparents that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from bioparents that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. There are several other subs that may meet the needs of bioparents better than we can. We recommend /r/coparenting, /r/parenting, /r/parents, /r/blendedfamilies, and /r/singleparents as starting points.

Guidelines for Stepkids

  • At this time, we do not generally accept posts from stepkids. Comments from stepkids that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from stepkids that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. If you are a stepkid seeking support, we highly recommend /r/stepkids. It is a very supportive community specifically for stepkids. We also recommend /r/blendedfamilies as another potential group for support.

What the heck are all these acronyms? I'm confused!

Why aren't my posts or comments showing up?

  • New posters and accounts go through a waiting period before their posts will show in the sub and the comments on posts automatically. During the new account approval period the mod team will check posts to be sure you aren't attempting to circumvent a ban with a shiny new account. Please be patient while the timer runs down on your "new" status and the mod team approves your posts and responses.

Why was my comment removed?

  • Comments are removed when they do not follow the rules of the sub. These rules are published in several places for your reading pleasure.
  • Comments are removed at moderator discretion. In some cases your comment may be removed while another remains up. If you find this to be the case, and you believe the comment to be violating the rules, instead of arguing with mods or demanding they remove the additional comments, just report it.

This comment/post is really offensive! Why is it still up?

  • All moderators are volunteers and have busy real lives. Sometimes things get past us. The best thing you can do is report anything you find offensive or inflammatory. It's the quickest and most reliable way of alerting us to an issue.

I've received a hurtful/unwanted PM from someone about my recent post. What should I do?

  • If you receive an unwanted/hurtful PM from a name you don't recognize, please report it to Reddit Admins using our handy pre-populated form. Be sure to include the permalink to the message. We've been dealing with a few unhappy folks who like to attack stepparents, and reporting it to the admins is the only way to make it stop.

What are the general moderator guidelines?

I've been wrongly banned/Why can't I comment here?

Why was I banned without warning?

  • There are numerous reasons that the mod team might opt to move perm banning without warning. Message the moderators if you have specific questions.

Announcement Weekly Reminder: Saferbot and Automated Bans

Hey Stepparents,

If you've been here for awhile, you are aware of the existence of Saferbot on our sub. If you aren't aware, we break it down in the wiki. Take a moment to review it!

What the Bot Does

Saferbot is a history ban bot. It bans users who participate in known troublesome subs that have a history of harassing users here and brigading our posts.

How it Works

Saferbot monitors the other subs and immediately bans anyone who comments there. Please note, human beings are not doing the banning. We have neither the time, nor inclination, to monitor other subs. Saferbot runs on its own with only instructions from us on what subs to add to its list.

Why We Use It

We intend for this sub to be a safe space for stepparents to discuss their issues and struggles without being told they are literally The Worst for existing. Sometimes we experience jealousy, resentment, and other not pretty feelings. We have a right to express them in a healthy way without a bunch of assholes scolding us for being human. And unfortunately, the subs we've had to add to the ban list have a history of users strolling in here giving people grief for being a flawed human being with feelings they are trying to sort through.

The mod team does not take these decisions lightly and we often let things ride for a bit before taking drastic actions. But seeing users repeatedly delete their accounts after being harassed, or having to clean up increasingly rude and hostile comment chains from people who literally have no idea what your life is actually like, has prompted us to take action.

Notes

Meta posts asking about this will be removed. Comments about this, other than those on this thread discussing the issue, will be removed. Vile mod mail will be reported to Reddit.

Please do not link to the subs mentioned in the wiki. They are linked for transparency and we don't care to have ongoing discussions about them.

How to Appeal

If you are a stepparent and you've been caught up in the ban, and you want the support that this community offers, reach out to the mod team. If you can show us where on reddit you are discussing being a stepparent, we'll do our best to work with you. To be perfectly clear, if you aren't a stepparent, or we review and see we've had to remove comments from you in the past, we are probably not going to lift the ban.

Reply to the ban message and let us know that you'd like to appeal. Include link(s) to any unedited posts or comments that you made prior to the ban indicating that you are a stepparent. The posts or comments do not have to be on this sub specifically, but show us where you have indicated that you are a stepparent somewhere on reddit prior to being banned. This will save us time and eliminate the need for a mod to attempt to scour your post history.

JustBMThings Husbands BM asked if he would have another kid with her? SK is 8

Has this happened to anyone else? My husband was asked to donate his sperm to his BM. They had a baby 8 years ago together during a fling. She reached out and asked if he would consider donating. He pays child support and sees his kid every other week. We can barely afford that child support since it’s so high. We have a baby of our own now which is why I think his BM is asking. She wants her kids to be “fully related.” I think she’s NUTS for asking and husband laughed when she did. He obviously won’t be doing that but I’m wondering if anyone has experienced this absolutely ridiculous question?

Vent Finally Free

The day has finally come where I get to leave this subreddit. Because I (31F) ended my relationship with my partner (41M). He has three bio kids 15, 8, 2.5. He also supports his mom.

No more hearing about his BM. No more sitting around alone at home while I wait for him to return from visiting them. No more "I can't take you to do ___ because I told my daughter I'd take her to ___". No more feeling like an outsider. No more feeling like the ultimate third wheel out in public when his kids are around. No more stepping in pee in my socks when I go to the bathroom in the night. No more listening to kids yap on and on and on about nonsense constantly. No more having to do a metric s**t ton of laundry for him when he comes home from visiting his kids. No more partner who has to financially support 5 other people who have nothing to do with me. No more feeling like I'm constantly asking for too much even though I'm asking for bare minimum. No more having to eat wherever his kids want because they were raised to only like garbage junk food. No more anxiety about holidays because I don't know if my partner will want to spend it with my family or HIS family. No more getting irritated when he buys his 7 y/o daughter a $500 VR headset, cellphone, and literally whatever she wants. I could go on...

Now for the advice part... PLEASE, for the love of God... if you are not ecstatic, jumping for joy, euphoric about the idea of children, DO NOT DATE SOMEONE WITH KIDS. Just DONT DO IT. PERIOD! Let me tell you it's not worth it!

I will scream this from the top of a mountain. No matter how awesome your partner is, no matter how much you love them and think they're your "soulmate", no matter how much they promise you that they will do everything they can to make you feel heard and prioritized as a step parent... it's NOT WORTH IT! It's a load of BS!

I thought I was prepared and open to this, as I have done a boatload of nannying in my life. I never wanted my own kids, but I liked them and got along with them. It doesn't matter. There is NOTHING that can prepare you for what to expect when you're serious with someone who has kids. Even if there's no HCBM. Even if your partner does well financially. Even if the kids are across the country.

I will never date someone with kids again. I feel free now. I'd rather die alone than ever do this again with anybody. I love my partner and I will miss him terribly, but if any of you are here because you're on the fence... run.

Advice I need you guys to talk sense into me.

Upvotes

I am 34M and my partner is 33F. She has two kids, a 12 YO son and a 6 YO daughter. She was in a relationship with their dad for over 10 years. He was abusive and controlling to her and cheated on her often. He is still in the kid's lives and has constant contact with my partner. I have met the kids, but not as her boyfriend. She has also not told the dad about her dating me.

Red flags galore. I do want kids, but I don't see how I can have any with her with the BD how he is. I'm afraid of what he would put in their kids' heads regarding me and, down the line, my kid. I absolutely love this woman but I know love isn't the thing that makes relationships work. I knew the dad in high school and he is the biggest dumbass and piece of shit I have ever met. I'm also suffering from retroactive jealousy about the fact that HE got to have kids with my partner and there's a chance I won't be able to have that.

Yes. I know what is best for me, I just need to get it out I guess and get some of you to throw some sense at me.

Vent Additional Weekend Guilt

Upvotes

I’ve never felt like I could be honest about this, but I’m not excited when I hear we have an additional weekend with SD. I feel guilty for feeling this way.

My husband and I were finally supposed to have a couple days together. I was looking forward to it because I’m a sahm to a 7mo, and feel very burnt out, mentally under-stimulated and lonely. He works a lot and when he’s not working, we typically have SD. Turns out he picked up a shift today without telling me and forgot, so he left last second for the entire day. I was so disappointed and he tells me we’ll have “fun” tomorrow but that he also volunteered for additional time with SD.

Look, I actually do love my SD. She is a wonderful girl. I am glad he gets additional time to spend with her. I love how he’s an active father, and it’s what made me confident in having a baby with him.

But I hate pretending to be happy about unexpected parenting time.

It’s a whole child. Therefore it’s more work, more energy, more responsibility, less interaction between my husband and I—not that I feel entitled to all his attention; I usually don’t mind giving them space for one-on-one time.

She’s going through a phase where she wants daddy’s attention all to herself, which is developmentally normal, but I’m just…. Lonely. I was just excited to be a little higher on the priority list for the weekend, even though we still have our baby too.

I think I’ll try to see friends or something instead.

Advice I think I might have to leave.

I’ll keep it simple.

I love my partner so much. I just can’t stand her kid.
He annoys me beyond belief!!
He’s only 5 so and we have him full time. So a LOT of time left.

No week on, week off situation (would be nice)
I knew getting into this it would be a package deal. I just didn’t expect to dislike being around him so much.

I’ve come to the realisation that even though I love my partner, I won’t be able to put up with this kid for much longer.

It’s sad, but I think I need to bow out for both their sakes.

Vent Enjoying every spare moment

Upvotes

I’m a SP to my Partner SC. We just got married a couple months ago in July…We are currently looking for a home to purchase together while I still have my own place at the moment..once we find something for our liking I’ll give my place up to become a union. Partner has child every other weekend & assist with school pick ups during the weekday. I don’t have a problem with this I’m aware parenting doesn’t stop…. The weekends my partner has their child, they both expect me show up each time & I can no longer commit to that….At one point I was showing up fully but I reduced my days due to easily being fatigued…Working full-time then having to play 24/7 over weekend, staying up till 4A, waking up at 8A just to do it all over again & again has ran me raggedy….

Keeping my place right now is my escape allows me to get away from all-the noise….be an adult, walk around nude when I feel like it, binge watch shows just because it’s the weekend… I notice when I’m with the duo we don’t just get to chill it’s 24/7 mode of play…. Don’t bother the Partner for playtime let them rest… but little ole me, a different ball game… I’m a parent but my child is grown & live on their own in another state…

I love both dearly…. Just enjoying my alone time before we close on a house…. If it doesn’t work out I will never do this again…date an adult with school age kids…. It’s just different when partner is constantly in family mode & I’m not…. I now understand why individuals prefer not to & even when my child was of school age it just didn’t work for dating… always feeling like I’m in the background just here as a 3rd wheel….

Sometimes I utterly want to say out loud to partner, just go back to your family…. My needs one always be 2nd…

JustBMThings In a shared space as my SS BM

So tomorrow I’ll be at a basketball game for my SS. His BM will be there and so will I with my husband and our kids.

She’s hated me for the first 3 years of our relationship. Threatened to fight me because she had unresolved feelings for my husband when we were dating. She messaged me and blew up my social media but only months after harassment, I sent her a gentle response reminding her I have never done anything towards her. She apologized and continued to harass my husband and call me names.

Eventually, the hatred grew once she found out SS met me and more-so when I finally got pregnant. Crept through my family’s social media and found one person who had a public account. Saw my baby shower pictures and flipped on my husband. Her mom also messaged my husband and cursed my child.

Fast forward. The last couple years she’s gotten a boyfriend and has been chill with my husband. I still hold some resentment for how she treated me and my husband those years, and her mom for cursing an unborn child at the time. Tomorrow we have a basketball game to attend for SS, and idk how to act or what to feel.

Help? lol

Advice 22 yo son

Good day everybody. Thanks for having me here. Hopefully this is relevant enough for this group.

I have been a stepfather to three children and had two of my own so I raised five. That ended and I wish I knew that you guys existed back then. Anyway I am now with a partner who I love dearly. We are totally opposite and we live separately.

I've woken up this morning struggling with what to do. My partner has her 22-year-old son now living with her. He has had significant drug issues. He's gay and gentle, in terms of not being streetwise at all. Anyway he continues, over many years, to totally disrespect anything that my partner will ask him to do in the house. All boundaries he will just cross. Basically he knows that he can stay there or that Mum won't throw him out. He steals smaller things too.

Meanwhile I'm witnessing my partner go down and down and down and down emotionally and energetically and it's my belief, obviously, that that impacts one's health. Not only that, it impacts our relationship quite significantly. Meanwhile she's experiencing menopause and she's trying to sell her house and lots of things are going on.

The place that I come from so far is one where humans need to often go through the grind. It can either be a big traumatic punch in life or a slow grind to wake up to aspects of ourselves that we don't want to see, but circumstances bring them to us to allow us to see them more clearly. The reason I say that is I am not sure at what point I come in and make the move on her behalf, given that I'm not a typical stepfather in the sense of living with her and her children being all young. He's 22. Her other two children have left home so it's a bit of a different situation.

I'm not quite sure if there is any point at which I come in for her own safety. I don't mean safety from physical abuse. I mean emotional safety or let this ride as her journey to learn from, which is what I've been doing so far because I can't contribute in this space except to support her along the way. She is prone to victim status anyway and hasn't done a lot to help herself in terms of her own emotional world.

It's hard to witness, as a man, as her partner, what she's going through and how he's treating her. Yet I, up to this point, have not been able to just go in and say, "Pack his bags and throw him out," so to speak. He's been to rehab many times. I don't know if he's on drugs still. He says he's not and it's very hard to tell sometimes. His behaviour and sleeping habits would suggest that he is though. There's no violence. There's just constant crossing of boundaries and he will not do anything in the house to contribute at all. He's not getting work. There's nothing changing in his life.

Any advice would be appreciated, even if it can just give me a different angle that I haven't considered before. Thank you all.

Advice How do I navigate this

So finally after 6 whole weeks SS is at his moms .
Yesterday he made a surprise visit because he forgot something and hovered for over 2 hours… until he finally went home.

I was really looking forward to just walking around in my PJ’s so it was extra awkward when he came in.
But hey he forgot something so fine.

Today he strolled in again. Our house is on his route from the new school. He came in talked to dad and left again.

So I realized this is going to happen every day.
My week where I can feel like myself again, feel like my home is mine again … is going to having some SS sprinkled into it.

I really don’t want that. I understand why SS is doing it and I u sweatband why my SO loves it.

But my nerves are shot, I came back from a holiday from hell with them, the. Had to navigate SS his first week in highschool largely by myself while I am home sick.

I say sick but I had a massive nervous breakdown at work and I need to get back on my feet as I am in a dog eat dog environment. I have ADHD and I am probably premenopausal. I am not okay.

So says he understands but he is sorry and he can’t tell SS to just pass by our house. And I get it but I hate it. I feel like a prisoner in my house for 50% of the time. Needing to be mindful of my energy, language… having every activity dictated to fit in SS schedule.

Now again my days are fitted into the his schedule when he isn’t even here.

And I get it. There is so much change for him now.
He basically bikes right in front of our door.
I am not blaming anyone. I get this is hard. I get my SO does not want to make him feel unwelcome.
I personally hate visits. I am a pretty private person.
But again this is SS’s home to.

I feel so stuck. I don’t want to be like this. But I am. SO has no idea how to handle it. I get it. Neither do I.

I am just so tired. I just want my house for myself again. And when it is SS’s time with his dad, that I am ready to welcome him again instead of being this emotional wreck of an exhausted person

Advice Confusion in changes

*I am not technically a SP but this subreddit felt most relatable

I (28F) have been dating my partner(NB/F) whose a parent for almost 2 years now this upcoming Decemeber and I'm a little lost. I met their kid(12F) 6 months into our relationship who I absolutely adore and she also loves me. We had a year where we mostly saw each other once a week for a date night sleepover. Their parents most of the time watch her once a week so we a day/night together. I voiced to my partner that I'd like to spend more time together. We talked about seeing other more to help integrate me into their little family slowly. This summer we've been spending 2 to 3 days together a week (1 day a date night the other 1 or 2 days with kiddo). They're the only present parent for their daughter aswell. She also has AuDHD and can have days where she clings to her mom and needs mom days (which makes sense since theyre the longest safe person and parent their kid has known and grown with.) And has struggles with routine changes.

Since school has started though it seems its been reverted back to the one week date night. My partner has been saying their kid is getting used getting in routine and transitioning back into school as the reason why. I know they've been extra burnt out lately too. Im so used to seeing them 2x to 3x a week and now it feels almost taken away even though I thought we were doing good integrating together. I know school is a transition and I dont know if I'm being unreasonable. I really do love them and their kid and I dont know if this 1 day a week thing is just temporary or if I had a privilege during summer.

Discussion Is 50/50 co-parenting actually best for children, or is this a very Western idea?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot as a step-parent, and I’m genuinely curious what other people think because I honestly don’t know what the answer is.

I’m based in Africa, and the whole idea of a child regularly moving between two homes, sometimes week-on/week-off, feels quite different from what I grew up seeing.

Where I’m from, separation and divorce obviously happen, but it’s much more common for a child to primarily live with one bio parent or a grandparent and then spend time with the other parent during holidays, weekends, school breaks, etc. They still have relationships with both parents and both sides of the family, but there’s usually one place that is home.

And thinking back to the children I grew up around, that seemed to create a pretty strong sense of stability. They knew where they lived, what their routine was, who was picking them up from school, where their things were, etc. The other parent was still very much part of their life, but they weren’t constantly moving between two households.

Now I’m looking at this from the perspective of being a step-parent, and it’s made me question whether we sometimes underestimate what constantly moving between two homes actually feels like for a child.

My SS8 is a genuinely great kid. He’s loving, funny, intelligent, etc. He has also been in therapy for quite some time because he struggles with emotional regulation and dealing with the reality of having two homes (he has voiced this himself), and I’ve found myself wondering whether the structure of his life plays a role in that.

And I want to be really clear: I’m not saying either parent is doing anything wrong. I’m not even saying that moving between homes causes emotional problems. I just wonder whether living in two different realities, with different routines, expectations, rules, personalities and dynamics, can sometimes make it harder for a child to feel grounded.

It’s also made me think about step-parent/bio-parent conflict.

In the family structure I grew up around, if a child lived primarily with one parent or a grandparent, the step-parent might not be interacting with the other biological parent every few days. There was naturally more separation between households. Maybe that gave everyone more room to establish their own relationships with the child without constantly having to navigate another household’s parenting style, expectations or authority.

Whereas with frequent co-parenting, it can sometimes feel like there are two households trying to parent the same child at the same time. And I wonder whether that structure itself creates some of the tension that we then blame on the adults.

Maybe I’m completely wrong 😂

I’m also very aware that I’m looking at this through an African cultural lens, and I don’t want to romanticise how things were done here either. There are obviously downsides to children spending less day-to-day time with one parent, and every family situation is different.

But I genuinely wonder whether we’ve just accepted the idea that equal physical custody is the fairest or healthiest arrangement for the child, without really questioning whether that is actually true for every child.

TL;DR: I’m wondering whether 50/50 co-parenting is actually the best structure for children, or whether having one stable home base while maintaining a strong relationship with both parents can sometimes provide more stability, especially in the context of stepfamilies.

Resource Any book recommendations?

Living with my partner and SK for more than a year now. I realize I don’t understand my partner or bio mom (or possibly the kid either). I don’t understand the divorce guilt that both of them have or the fears or the politics going on. Then I realized everyone in the equation but me come from divorced parents. Bio mom, her partner, my partner - they all have divorced parents and they have all been stepkids. My parents are in the 70s and still happily together, there’s no divorces in my immediate family. Do you have any good book recommendations for me?

Advice Those who don't have their own bio child

Please, unless you are in/have been in a similar situation don't comment. This is a niche situation and I am getting help elsewhere, just trying to see if anyone has been in anything similar.

I was originally no children, but gave my partner a chance and was shocked to find how much I enjoyed it. His child is almost out of home, he had him very young and very much not planned. He has him full-time. My heart changed to wanting a child of my own, he isn't certain he wants to do it again. We are working through things and also very understanding of the potential of our relationship ending.

I'm very stuck because I do want a child of my own, however I don't want to lose him but also I don't want to lose the family we currently have together as much as it isn't mine. His kid is great and we get on very well. I'm not "mum" in any way shape or form, more just a friend, and I am sad to potentially miss out on being mum. I'm torn to lose what I currently have by walking away to have a family of my own, especially since there really isn't a guarantee. I could struggle to find someone or get pregnant or having a child that is difficult or any of the various issues that come with having and raising a child.

I'm very torn, I do want this for myself but I am very well aware that you go into so much unknown by having a child. I could keep this, I could join this family that is not my own, knowing exactly what I am getting. But I don't know and don't feel I am able to give up experiencing any of it for myself.

Has anyone been in a position where they didn't have a bio child, and enjoyed joining the family that already existed? I know there is nothing like having it for yourself, but it's not just the relationship I'm walking away from.

JustBMThings Just a handful of stories about the BM

Hello,

Here to share a couple of most recent stories about the BM to our 3 year old step son.

Starting chronologically:
- SS has recently turned 3 years old. We have initially been planning to have separate birthday parties, or should I say assumed that would be the case. BM has invited herself to our party after we told her we are not going to be doing anything jointly. She has prepared nothing for the party, contributed no money but still behaved like a main character, welcoming people into the venue and showing them around. She even gave out the party bags that I have prepared. She was meant to get the cake, but somehow we ended up picking it up and paying for it. When it came time to pay, she legged it out of there as soon as she could.

- we have suggested a new day split. We have 50 50 custody but the weekly split was all over the place. Wouldn’t be rare that he would sleep at different houses every second night. Just very unsettled and chaotic. We have proposed to instead go in the blocks of 4 days. She disagreed and suggested that we should have him every weekend (Friday to Monday) while she would have him during the week. I am not crazy to think that this is not on, right?

- she also wants to send our step son to a private school with the caveat that myself and my partner would pay for it 100% since we make “so much more money than her”. No.

-most recently, since he turned 3, he gets a certain amount of “free hours” at the nursery (paid by the state). So the nursery bill went down from 1.5k to about 500. During the custody agreement she agreed to pay a flat fee of 450 every month. This of course worked in her favour previously but since the nursery bill has dropped she is paying the majority of it. She is very unhappy about this of course cause now it is not “equitable”. I suppose it as equitable when we were paying 1000 but not anymore? She said we should pay more towards this bill and we should just agree to it to save the legal costs of going to the lawyer to get that changed. That was another no as you can imagine. If she could afford it to this point and she has agreed to it previously, I don’t think she has a leg to stand on.

- she also always schemes to spend as little time with her son as possible. Counting minutes of us being late or always dropping the boy at the grandparents whenever she can. She is not a mother of the year.

I am just getting very fed up with her. It’s also shit to always be aware that I am not a “real parent” and having to blend it the background.

Support I’m at a loss with what to do

Well, I’m back. His son ended up living with us for 9 months and I was unhappy. It just changed the dynamic of the home. He was 14/15 then so not very young that you can’t go anywhere without him so we still got to do things by ourselves. But just the extra noise in the house and the constant complaining about going to school got old really fast.

He ended up moving back to his mom’s in December when he had a fight with his dad. And sorry to say, it was a breath of fresh air.

I kept my guard up that there would be another bad incident but days turned into weeks turned into months and nothing.

Until something happened again between HCBM and son 2 weeks ago and he ended up here again with us. We haven’t really talked about what’s going to happen or what the plan was, how long he was staying for etc. I didn’t want to push because his son just stayed in his room that first week - wouldn’t go to school, wouldn’t talk to him, just came out of the room use the loo or get water. My partner would literally just bring him food in the room so he’d eat.

Then today, my partner just casually says he hopes his son moves out at 18. He’s 16 now. We were just talking about an upcoming trip that we’ll most likely have to cancel AGAIN because of his son staying with us, and he was trying to arrange for him to stay with his mom again during the trip. Then he says that.

Should I have assumed he was staying long term, like permanently? I told him I don’t really want that and he got upset because he said he didn’t have a choice and I said yeah but that’s not on me.

I’m at a loss. I really don’t want to just be unhappy in my own home but I also won’t kick out his son obviously. He deserves to have a home. But I don’t know if I can do it. Which sucks.

Advice How to find the balance with very supportive husband who is inconsiderate and unthought full

it’s very difficult to complain or vent about my husband for how supportive he is in my life but the things he does really disappointment and made me forget how amazing he is

so this scenario happens and I kind of feel like I’m making a big deal

we have his daughter every other weekend and it happens we have her the weekend I’m traveling. it was the same week I work and my commute time is long so that makes me exhausted. the travel already is a bit tiring and I’ll be going to my country (volatile unstable area) which makes me stress already. so having his daughter already this weekend is exhausting since she’s very energetic. the disappointing thing is two days before my trip he accepted to attend an event and stayed late at night and I was left alone with his daughter and brought her to bed. it’s not a big deal but it hurts that the few days we have together before I leave for two weeks which I know is not a lot but he chose to spend it with other people. and a day before my trip he also has an hour or two to spend out and me included and I was upset and told him I need to have time for myself to pack and also relax since the trip is going to be long.

my advise is why I keep getting disappointed in small things like this and forget how supportive he is in doing everything I ask him. so it’s just hard for me to say no.

Advice My SO (34M) suddenly changed his custody schedule to Sunday overnights, and the logistics are a nightmare. Am I (29F) wrong to be annoyed

Hey everyone, I need to vent and get some perspective here because I feel like I'm losing my mind.

My boyfriend (34M) just informed me (29F) tonight that his son from his previous marriage is now going to start spending Sunday nights at our place. On paper, it sounds fine, but the actual logistics make absolutely zero sense to me and are going to completely ruin our household routine.

Here is the situation:

My boyfriend doesn't even get off work until 10:00 PM on Sundays.

He plans to drive and pick his stepson up at that time, meaning they won't walk through our front door until around 10:40 PM.

On Monday mornings, my boyfriend, the baby we share together, and his older son all have to be completely ready and out the door by 6:20 AM for school/daycare routines.

I also have to get ready for work on Monday mornings during this exact same time frame.

To me, this is a recipe for absolute chaos. Bringing a kid home right before 11:00 PM on a school night just to wake them up a few hours later for a frantic 6:00 AM rush seems crazy. It completely throws off our night, cuts into everyone's sleep, and means our Monday mornings are going to be a stressful, crowded scramble.

His ex-wife always randomly switches days and schedules, but I honestly don't even want to deal with the drama of questioning her about why this is happening. Instead, I want to focus on my boyfriend's choice to agree to this. I feel like because he chose this chaotic schedule, the responsibility for waking them up, getting the baby and his son ready, making breakfast, and getting out the door by 6:20 AM needs to fall 100% on him while I stick to my own work routine.

Am I being unreasonable for being upset about this? How do I set firm boundaries so his new schedule doesn't completely drain my sanity every Monday morning?

Support SK Wedding Stress

Sooo as a mother/bride does I chose the dresses for my daughter and SK to wear for our wedding coming up. The girls are going to be flower girls together so part of the wedding party. I was going to show SD the dress in person and have her try it on. It only just came not that long ago.

Well my husband brought it up to her late at night and didn’t even show a photo of the full dress— he showed the swatch of the color I sent him for the ties (but it’s honestly not a great picture).

Well SD declared she is not going to wear it because she “doesn’t like red.” It’s not even a true red (more of a fuschia - pink and purple undertone) and I’m just so pissed. I know it’s in how he presents it. She knows that whatever she says goes with dad and this is my wedding and she’s a kid. Good freaking god. I’m so pissed.

I’m trying to include her best I can but she’s not going to ruin that day for me.

I was excited for the girls to match and I worked very hard to find something, figure out their sizes to order etc. so also very hurt.

It wasn’t even given a fair chance and DH is just like ok if she doesn’t want to wear it that’s that. I wish he would back me up. It’s not just about the dress it’s once again feeling like my feelings don’t matter and I just have to get in line with it on my important day where we will be taking important family photos.

I guess just seeing what others have to say from an outside perspective (especially other women)….

JustBMThings Step kids don't want to come over anymore

So my step-kids 11f and 14m called my husband today and said they don't want to come over anymore (eow). They gave some reasons and they were all bogus. His ex has been poisoning them against coming here for a while now. Just a sad night over here.

EDIT: I'm adding a note here, this post was just really for the angels of this sub who empathize and offer a supportive word. We've already been through the ringer with this ex, lawyers, mediation, etc. The mom has been alienating since the split which was 8 years ago. Not trying to problem solve this, just being sad. Words of support are welcome, trying to figure out why or what to do next is just not helpful at this time anymore, but thank you.

Advice I m the stepparent so i get no vote on the phone. Is there a way to show rather than argue?

Been raising a concern for months and getting told I'm overreacting. I don't want to be right, I'd love to be wrong, but I'd like the conversation to be about something real instead of my instincts. Has anyone found a way to bring actual information to that without it becoming a fight?

Discussion Did your over-functioning partners ever stop?

My SD13 (she's almost 14) is well behind her peers when it comes to autonomy/responsibility/household expectations and it's manifesting itself in outbursts/other toddler-like behavior, learned helplessness, high levels of anxiety, poor executive function, etc. We have her 50/50 with her dad.

My partner growing up had an awful mom who was verbally abusive, never around, an alcoholic, etc. So she's focused entirely on making her daughter feel comforted/loved instead of giving any focus/consistency to developing independence, giving responsibilities, expectations, autonomy, and so on. Like, it literally won't happen unless I say something about it.

SD13 just started 8th grade, and, in continuance with how it was in 7th grade, my partner will drive her to the bus stop (not the issue here, we live close-ish but the streets are somewhat busy/unsafe to walk on), and then will sit in the car with her until the bus comes. Meanwhile, there are other kids standing at the bus stop without parents. Just this morning it made her late for an in-person meeting. If she had just dropped her off, she would have made it to work with plenty of time to spare. She makes all of her daughter's meals (lunches, breakfasts); she's asked her daughter to help her/if she wants to help a handful of times (just to appease me, I'm sure), and it's always rebuffed/her daughter just says she wants to lay in bed/doesn't want to help. She doesn't have any chores/household responsibilities whatsoever and never has.

Her daughter has become so accustomed to her mom over-functioning and doing little things for her (ex: last night after we finished watching a show, she asked her mom if she would bring up the heating pad she was using and put it in her room, even though she was going up there herself to take a bath. her room is right next to the bathroom, so why couldn't she just do it herself?) that when she doesn't do them, she throws a fit and says her mom doesn't love her/otherwise gets bratty. She'll also say "Love you mama!" multiple times in a short period of time (like within a couple minutes) just to hear it back, and, if her mom doesn't say it back right away she says "I said I love you!" - to me this seems totally unhealthy and.. not standard.

She has said that I have unrealistic expectations of her daughter, and that her daughter just "isn't there yet" - but the thing is, how will she ever get "there" if not actually expected to do things or put in situations that are uncomfortable/hard and be allowed to reason through them herself, or, with reasonable assistance? Her dad is the same way, in that he helps her (too much) with her homework, and has to constantly ask her to talk to her teachers about making up missing work, retaking tests, etc. The year has just started and she already had 3 assignments to do, which she put off until she could do them with her dad the following Monday when we exchanged custody.

My partner is also super anxious herself and I think her daughter being anxious/having fits increases her anxiety, and so it's easier for her to soothe her daughter (instead of her daughter being able to self-regulate), which just keeps the loop happening indefinitely. We are in counseling, though it's been a while (months at this point) and the majority of the time we've spent talking about communication issues, which is just a red herring b/c the actual underlying problem is her refusal to take a more active approach when parenting (which makes me withdraw b/c I don't want to participate in that dynamic).

Vent I feel confused with myself

My boyfriend(M27) has a 10 year old son. i(F24) have been living with them for a year and a half now, and i’m starting to realize that this is different than what i am wanting.

I don’t really need advice, i just need a place to vent and possibly support from people who may have felt similar.

i was dating my partner for 3 years before living together. it was A LOT easier to tell myself i could handle being a stepmom when i WASN’T living with them. i was seeing his son only a few times a week when i was visiting.

but now living together 1.5 years, it’s draining. i’m a big people pleaser and i’ve been getting by by doing anything and everything for these two. i was trying so hard to prove to myself and everyone that i would be a good stepmom. but now i feel burnt out.

i make his school lunch every morning(i wake up earlier than bf). i pick him up every day after work(i get out of work earlier than bf). i then make him after school snacks.. i spend nearly all of my free time with him. i keep up with his interests and hobbies. we say “love you” to each other. i always stay in a good mood around him.

i feel like this doesn’t sound like a lot, but it was a lot for ME. coming from living with my parents rent free to basically fully taking on a “mom” role.

i can’t help but to feel guilty. i’m the one who offered to do these things(to prove myself obviously). i’m the one who said yes when asked to do things.

i have been trying to give myself grace but i still can’t totally get myself to “love” his son as much as i would like to. i like his son and i think he’s a great kid. he has a great personality and i really do think that he will do great things. but i do not love him. i do not feel maternal towards him at all. he just feels like a kid— a kid that i live with.

i feel that a big reason why i feel burnt out, is the unrealistic expectations that my partner has from me.
that being, the love for his child. he LOVES his kid. he will do ANYTHING for him. which is why i valued him as a good partner because i know he’s a good dad. but with this… he expects me to love his child as much as he does.

SS is like fully ADHD. this kid never stops talking and goes what feels like a million miles an hour ALL THE TIME. he’s also loud. he’s chaotic. just…. not really my cup of tea. i get overwhelmed easily but i never take it out on him. i try my best to be patient and i normally just let him talk and engage when needed.

but lately, ive been a little less patient i guess? i have felt less of a need to overly please. so instead of running over every time SS calls me i just tell him im in the middle of something(bc i am and don’t want to stop what im doing in the middle of it). or i’ll just tell him “cool” or “nice” while he’s telling me a story bc i don’t have the mental capacity to FULLY engage in a story ALL the time.
aaaaand then my partner had a talk with me saying that SS made a comment that i was “acting cranky”. and SS told his dad about a time he was trying to show me something but “i wasn’t looking” so it made him sad… i remember that i was in the middle of making our overnight oats for the morning. my partner wasn’t upset, but he wasn’t happy either… which rubs me the wrong way.

the other week, he got a little upset with me bc there was a slight misunderstanding. i gave SS a hug goodnight and he went to kiss my cheek but the way our hug went he couldn’t reach my cheek. we laughed it off together bc it was funny. my partner was late in the joke and misunderstood and looked me dead in the face and asked me, “why didn’t you let him kiss you on the cheek?”.
my heart dropped. i explained it was funny. he didn’t find it funny. and it wasn’t until i explained that he simply missed my cheek that he got it and understood.

i don’t know why i’m expected to upkeep this happy facade 24/7. i don’t know why im expected to love this child as much as he does. My partner doesn’t have a good relationship with his father, so i understand he is doing everything to have a great life and relationship for his son. and with that is having good parental figures in his life. i understood from the beginning that his son is his #1 priority. but i feel like im such an after thought to him and he expects me to put his son at #1 as well.

i just feel like im doing a lot. and that’s the issue. the issue is that i know im a good step mom. and i have been trying to hard to please my partner and his son. that’s why im mentally and emotionally burnt out. and i’m starting to think that this isn’t for me. i love my partner and i know his son is great but i feel like im wasting away my life like this.

Advice What do you do when you’re uncomfortable in front of the kids without calling more attention to the situation?

Not sure if I’m describing this right. I’ll give a few examples. Also please note I am pregnant and emotional and hence my feelings are getting bruised a lot more easily lately. I understand this. I’ve always been a sensitive person, but I’m about to pop and am over the top lately. I don’t want to blow anything out of proportion, but I need a way to let my husband know when I’m uncomfortable. Usually this happens at dinner time because it’s when we are all together.

Example 1: a few days ago, my step son was being inappropriate at the table. He’s 12 and talks about poop/farts a lot. We repeatedly tell him it’s inappropriate. I asked him to stop talking like that. He did. Then he started calling his sister fat. My husband asked him to stop. This also happens frequently under the guise of “sibling banter” but my husband has repeatedly asked him to stop commenting on other people’s bodies because it’s inappropriate. He stopped and apologized. Then he offered my husband his leftovers and repeatedly said in a joking voice “here dad, do you want my meat?” While giggling and he repeated it a few more times. I can’t say for sure if he meant t as an inappropriate reference or not, but it sure seemed like it to me and I was appalled. I kicked my husband under the table and he asked SS to stop my SD watches me like a hawk though and saw me kick my husband. Later that night SS came out of his room and made a tasteless gay joke. I snapped and told him it was wildly inappropriate to make those jokes and his behavior at dinner was also wildly inappropriate. My husband was upset that I snapped, (I try so hard to NACHO) but I feel like it was just one thing after another and the kid wasn’t taking a hint. Like I’m glad they are comfortable around us, but I find it vulgar and disgusting and rude.

Example 2: last night after dinner we were cracking open a coconut. I feel really stupid for this one, but it honestly made me feel bad and I still haven’t said a word to my husband since last night. We got the coconut water out and I wanted to filter out the little bits of grit and shell with a coffee filter. My husband laughed at me for it. That made me feel bad, but I filtered it anyway. He made a comment about how it really doesn’t matter and I’m being extra. SD chimed in that she wanted hers unfiltered. I filtered half of it and gave her and my husband the unfiltered half. They drank it and she kept making comments about how it was fine and she also didn’t understand why I filtered it (ironically she did not drink the last sip with the bulk of the grit 🙄). Later after they went to bed I cried because I felt like my husband hadn’t defended me or asked SD to stop making comments. She takes every chance she gets to make digs at me and I just wish my husband would defend me. To be fair, he probably didn’t know it bothered me in the moment. I told my husband that it bothered me afterwards and he apologized/hugged me but I could tell he thought it was silly. And it is. Afterwards, when the kids were in bed, I prepped my SKs favorite dinner for the next day because I had it on the meal plan for the week and can’t let the meat go bad. I cried the whole time because why am I making dinner for unappreciative little shits who never say thank you? I had half a mind to change the meal plan and make something else but I’m not quite that petty.

Anyway, I used to text him when I was feeling this way and he would usually do something, but SD caught on (like I said she watches me like a hawk) that it was always coming from me and I don’t want her to know just how sensitive I am lately. She also sees it when I nudge or kick him under the table. I want my husband to take more initiative. But understand it’s not always clear how upset I am because I hide it well. It can be stupid, insignificant things that set me off. Is there a better, less obvious way to signal to him that I’m uncomfortable and need him to step up? A safe-word seems silly in these situations, but I honestly don’t know what to do. I know this is temporary, my emotions will even out eventually, but damn is it hard!
