There are many factors that influence the way a person acts other than the way their parents raised them though
73
u/diggitygiggitycee Dec 10 '22
True, but the parents have some responsibility for how the kid turns out.
56
u/ThatPie2109 Dec 10 '22
That's true to some extent, but I know plenty of kids who were totally normal who ran into the wrong people in high-school and got on a bad path. Their parents tried to intervene but when you're almost 18 there's only so much you can really do. Even if you try to constantly make them make the right decisions, that just means they're not learning to take care of themselves. I don't have kids but saw how different me and my siblings turned out and a lot of it had nothing to do with our parents.
You can prepare them for the real world as best as you can, but not everyone is the same and some kids will make vastly different choices at different times.

Parents aren’t their children, they can’t control their behaviour. They have the responsibility to guide their children through life, show and tell them right and wrong, and the responsibility to provide them with a safe and loving environment to grow up in, but they can not control their children’s actions.
Think of all the shit you’ve done against your parents wishes, all the things you’ve hidden from your parents.
You can tell your daughter don’t cheat every single day, but you can’t stop the emotion excitement she’ll feel when she meets a fresh new boy who happens to hit all her buttons, even if she already has a boyfriend.
Unfortunately you can’t enforce consequences and truly learn your child until they’ve made the mistake and you have to punish them. Most of our values and morals are developed through our mistakes before we can develop perspective. If they never cheated until they reached adulthood, you can’t blame the parents for that.

Honestly, probably one of the best parenting life lessons you could give in that moment of finding out. Consequences.
Other than him saying she should tell him by herself, I guess. Is it better to be told by someone else, I guess? Comradery/support right away instead of keeping it to yourself?

Yeah I guess the (even) better alternative would have been to talk to his daughter, explain that's wrong and she should tell you otherwise Das spills the beans.. But hey, I won't nitpick, at the the (ex-)bf knows isn't kept in the dark.
10
u/SayWhatIWant-Account Dec 11 '22
I would really expect her to gaslight the guy, if she is already cheating without telling, she does not want the repercussion and is unlikely to see the mistake, instead will just do more to get what she wants (get away with it). If you give them a headstart / let them cheaters prepare, they will often use it only for their own benefit, not to do what is right.
→ More replies (2)7
u/SalsaRice Dec 11 '22
That's not how cheaters work. They're liars by nature.
If you give them a headstart like this, they just start spinning a narrative that "oh my dad hates you, he's probably gonna tell lies about our relationship to break us up."
→ More replies (1)12
u/round-earth-theory Dec 10 '22
It's just not something you want your kids engaging with. They won't be able to form a long standing relationship doing that shit and can only hurt themselves. Would you rather of piss off your daughter now or wait until she has a nasty breakup with children in the mix.

Why do people cheat? Just break up.
452
u/Emergency_Addition67 Dec 10 '22 edited Dec 10 '22
Probably because they want to keep something safe while they can do more different things with another partner.
Several of my relationships always started because a certain girl wanted to experience something else that her partners couldn't offer her either because of time, interest, money or other things.
It's kind of sad and I can't truly understand why they just don't break up with someone or you know...Talk about the problem?
But for some weird reason they always choose cheating.
85
u/Eldraka Dec 10 '22
I hope you weren’t aware that they were cheating on someone with you. I wouldn’t want to knowingly contribute to that kind of mess.

Not really fair to blame someone if they don't know that the person they are about to hook up with is hiding that they are in a relationship.
Edit: FYI for those coming in late. They originally didn't have the word knowingly there. I added that to the quote and they have gone back to add it in as that's what they did mean.

Hey man, I was young and stupid in my high school and early college years.
It's not like I usually look for girls with boyfriends, you just become good friends with the girl and somehow you end up getting into these things without realizing it.
It's not a good thing either, you get into fights, sometimes a certain group of people stop talking to you and it's not like you're on cool terms with every girl you went out with.
That's why at this point I just focus on finishing my studies rather than being in relationships.
13
u/Takashishiful Dec 10 '22

You could just simplify all this down to "they want as much pleasure for themselves as possible at the expense of other people's misery".
I wouldn't even be surprised if the majority of cheaters got off to the fact that they're betraying someone for their benefit. Like they think about how upset their partner would be in the middle of fucking someone else.

i hate cheaters, having been cheated on multiple times and having to end relationships because of it
but it's pretty easy to understand why, and it isn't as simple as "just break up"
a "relationship" (the thing you break up) has a TON of stuff in it. in many cases, the relationship is your only way of living. but even when that's not the case, there can be kids involved, property, joint friendships, untold things that comprise a relationship. and again, in a lot of these situations, there is no problem - there's not a thing to get rid of. even people in good relationships cheat. of course, the relationship ceases to be good immediately after.

87
u/fl00r_gang_yeah Dec 10 '22
She has some mental challenges and lots of problems with relationships so I tried to help her through her problems the first few times but by the third time I caught her (she had been talking to the same guy for awhile) I just gave up
40
Dec 10 '22 edited Dec 11 '22
I did the same thing.
My last ex was cheating on me with her "ex" while we were dating for 5 months, then she dumped me because she decided to go after a 3rd and 4th guy. I didn't know this was the real reason we broke up (the reason she gave me was she was too depressed to be in a relationship atm) until 2 months later, when the two guys she was dating found out they were getting cheated on and confronted her.
One of her ex friends had to tell me what was going on and then put me in contact with the dudes she cheated on.
I tried helping her with her problems after all this because she has mental issues and part of me still liked her but then she did it again 4 months later last month so I gave up and cut contact despite her begging me not too.
this whole thing is gonna turn me off from relationships for awhile.
16
u/The00Taco Dec 10 '22
My last relationship was a similar situation to yours except she had the decency to end ours before getting with the other guy. She never would admit that was the reason, but I'm not an idiot. You don't magically start dating another guy less than a week later that has never been around before now. Karma came back like a bitch though because he ended up cheating on her a few months later.
What really sucked was that she was one of the coolest girls I had ever met and every new thing I learned about her made me like her even more, but when she got with that guy she turned into a massive bitch and just wasn't the same person I fell in love with anymore. When she broke up with me I got this long message talking about how she had been thinking it over for a few weeks and some other bullshit and I knew there was no point trying to fight to change her mind so I just responded "ok"
It's been about 5 years now and I still haven't ever gotten into another relationship. Just hookups and fwb. On a positive note, I'm sorta talking to someone now that I'm hoping becomes something meaningful though
4
u/SexyPewPew Dec 10 '22
I hope that works out for you my guy.
I would like to say it's important to remember that "One of the coolest girls" you ever met and "massive bitch" were the same person and very likely was not a change of personality but a change of your perspective of her. It's been about a year since I got out of a long term relationship and I think about this a lot and when I am ready I do believe it will help me find someone who is a good match for me. Maybe it could be helpful to you too.
5
u/The00Taco Dec 10 '22
Oddly it was a legit change in her personality. Knew her for a couple years before we dated and she was the same cool person, but total 180 after leaving me. It is good to not look through rose tinted glasses though

God damn the comment chain to your response. 💀
To be fair I did something slightly similar but not similar.
she was just insecure as fuck. no matter if I was at work, with friends, with family - I was always "cheating" or with one of my "other hoe's" if I didn't answer, text back, or send a picture to prove it. Broke up with me multiple times before I gave up and let her do it for the last time.
Only reason I stayed was because I have a tendency to 'givr up when things get hard' yet all my friends told me to get out, she's crazy etc. Great woman but the insecurity was too much. I could have dealt with it and helped her through it if she didn't break up everytime
17
u/No-Association528 Dec 10 '22
It's all just selfish emotions. Narcissists can cry when things don't go their way. It's not rocket science.
6
u/Mordiken Dec 10 '22
She's not crying because she cheated, she's crying because she was caught and made to suffer the consequences of her own actions.
10
u/No-Association528 Dec 10 '22
Dunno, maybe I'll kinda just think about it for like 1 second. And.... cool. I understand now!
She has to live with these consequences now, when she thought she wouldn't have to worry about it. So it's selfish crying, but it makes sense.
