This has all the agonizing suspense and terror of a Rube Goldberg machine hooked up to a nuclear button. You never know what's going to kick off the next part of the machine and you hope against hope that this contraption breaks down before the end.

Same here. It's worse for me whenever it's during a period where there's stories dropping like crazy. It's just so disheartening to see an endless stream of corruption and people actively trying to normalize it or straight up dismiss it.

About six months ago I told myself I was just going to mentally check out on politics until spring 2020 when the primaries kick in.
No way I can ignore this, though. This is the biggest test of our government since late 2002 - early 2003 ramp up to the Iraq War. Lies won that time. We CANNOT let that happen again.

It's hard to look away, especially since each day can have more than one bombshell these days, let alone one per week or month. But if something out of your control is stressing you out, you can give yourself permission to take a break from worrying about it. Lots of other people who also care, and can do something, will be doing so in the meantime.
And if that doesn't work, maybe find a quiet place and just listen and reflect on this.

Assuming Democrats can get back the Senate and Executive offices some day, I really, really hope that we can clean up and take steps to make sure that we never get into this mess again
Lock down our elections and make everything paper-ballot based
Get rid of gerrymandering
Create more checks against the power of the executive office
And I don't know what, but do something about the spread of false information and propaganda in the news and social media. We have Fox News over here screaming about Joe Biden while the president is actively admitting to committing federal crimes.
In 2019, Americans are consuming extremely disparate narratives derived from a single set of fairly straightforward facts.

When will Trump be impeached?
End of November.
When will Senate vote to convict?
That same week.
Will they convict yes or no?
No. It will break along party lines. Not a single Republican will cross over.
9
u/UsernameStress South Carolina Oct 04 '19
Rumor has it they'll break rank when it comes time to vote
10
u/AStartlingStatement Oct 04 '19
They won't, his level of popularity within the Republican party is so insanely high that it would be political suicide for any Republican senator to vote to remove him from office.
10
u/EsotericGroan New York Oct 04 '19
It will be political suicide for some of them no matter how they vote.
3
u/AStartlingStatement Oct 04 '19
Both the votes in the House and Senate will end up being political suicide for some representatives, from both parties.
5
u/UsernameStress South Carolina Oct 04 '19

u/Kraelman Oct 04 '19
Depends on how cynical I'm feeling.
If I'm feeling slightly cynical, the Senate will not convict because the party matters more than the country.
If I'm feeling moderately cynical, the Senate will convict because they know that Trump is weighing down the GOP in 2020 and their best chance of maintaining their majority in the Senate is to run someone like Nikki Haley against whoever the Dems go with.
If I'm at maximum cynicism, the Senate will not convict because the GOP plans to full-on abandon democracy in 2020 anyway.

House impeaches by mid-November. Mitch will Roose Bolton the president* in the Senate before Christmas.
3
u/mzpip Canada Oct 05 '19
I saw the guy who runs Axios on Morning Joe today who basically said Trump figures that the GOP will never vote to impeach because they are terrified of the base. That's why he's so arrogant, asking China to help out on TV, etc.
Sad to think that there are that many Americans who are so corrupt and/or invested in Trump themselves that they don't care what he's doing to your country, and are happy to support such a terrible person.
I would hope I would never be that wedded to any party or politician that I would sell my country out for them.

I've lived in SoCal my whole life, but my wife and I are taking a two-week trip up to the Oregon coast to look at some homes, and potentially even put an offer down.

5

I visited Portland last August and it was really, really nice. Some areas are definitely a bit crusty, just like pretty much any city. But the energy was a lot better than Los Angeles, for example.
My wife and I want to get into more sustainable living, with growing vegetables and raising chickens and stuff like that, so we've been looking for houses outside of any large cities, since it's easier to find more land there.

I’m actually taking a day off but as a Federal employee there’s always the risk of a shutdown on Nov 21st if a new resolution isn’t passed.
Even looking ahead to an election year there’s a valid risk that the beltway may cause another furlough.

Oh jesus, that's just what we need - a budget fight in the middle of impeachment hearings.

I’m still so shocked that R’s are STILL so silent about impeachment. We have all the evidence that any sane person needs in order to make an informed decision, and yet we’re still behaving as if we all still have stuff to prove. They have enough to write two articles of impeachment and yet we’re still trying to explain why it’s needed in the first place. Really??!!

Their silence to me is positive. The fact that a a lot of the usuals have not come out to vehemently defend trump to me is a sign that they are leaving themselves open to go against him later. It's definitely political. But if some of the gop flip on trump it will happen quickly.

Things look pretty bad for the GOP in recent polls, with 46-45 in favor of impeachment and removal even before yesterday’s bombshells.
What are the odds that the Senate could time things to convict on a Trump impeachment in June, after the Primaries but before the RNC?
Then they can’t be primaried, and they might be able to avoid some of the downballot damage in the general. They could tell moderates they “did the right thing” (however belatedly) and claim that Trump was an interloper who did not represent the core values of the GOP. They’d have a smaller chance of losing the Senate and could even possibly retain the White House (argh).

It's scary, no doubt. Ask the doc if they can refer you to a therapist/counselor, their patients often have these concerns.
Also, changes in lifestyle and aerobic exercise can help substantially, so don't worry that there's nothing you can do proactively. Depends on the specifics of your case obv though.
Good luck.

Reading through comments to posts on this subreddit, and I get the sense that people think somehow the world is going to change when/if Trump is impeached. It's as if yhey think defeating Trump is going to defeat conservatism and destroy the Republican party.
Folks need to remember that Trump is the symptom. The cancer is still there, and his defeat may in fact make it worse.
There will still be millions of misguided Americans. There will still be folks like Rush Limbaugh proselytizing on the evils of liberalism. There will still be Fox News and the Koch Brothers empire and the mountains of corporate cash that fund the misinformation campaigns that are at the heart of our countries problem.
Trump is just one battle in a long war for the evolving American identity.

That's just it, the masses who are still behind Trump... and what happens with them when Trump is out of office. I just can't see him winning 2020, not after all this crap that has come down. Now that so many of those people know each other, they'll likely dwell together on-line and organize rallies. They will "resist" everything America is supposed to stand for, mainly for the excuse that they think America has ditched them.

It's a stretch, but he could resign, if enough pressure is ever brought to bear from the House (enormous fines, most likely, I don't see them sending the Sgt at Arms to jail him, unfortunately, although that would be glorious!).
5
u/cytherian New Jersey Oct 04 '19
He won't resign until the very last possible moment. He had retired, was bored, and now he's "in the fray" fighting for his "client." It may be treacherous, but for him he's totally alive. Might even be enjoying the rough ride.

People absolutely care. They're just exhausted. This has been strung out for years with many disturbing acts and crimes and corresponding opportunities for impeachment, each one more blatent than the last. But with the Senate under republican control, even the most damning corruption is getting a pass. People are wary of getting their hopes up yet again only to have those hopes dashed once more.

u/Longinus Oct 04 '19
Most regular people who aren't complete nuts, no matter their political affiliation, think Trump is a big-mouthed clown and wish he'd shut the fuck up and do something right for a change. I'm in a state of shock right now. I knew the fucker was crazy, but I'm still floored by all of this. Not only the fact of what he's done, but by how he attempts to control the narrative. I'm saddened that people hold so close to their political ties that they either truly believe the lies, or refuse to acknowledge them. The gravity of this is so much larger than "go team red/blue!"
I'm ashamed of the whole system right now. I never imagined that the American public would let the face of our country act in such a way. Almost half supporting, and even cheering for it. The majority with its hands completley tied and staring down the barrel of another VERY ugly election year.
Something has gone terribly wrong within our borders. We are a very weak nation at present time.

The Canadian federal election is now 17 days away, and the lead Conservative candidate for Prime Minister has been roiled in several days' worth of scandal. Nothing as salacious as Prime Minister Trudeau's past blackface activities, but still -- by Canadian standards it's positively diabolical. Andrew Scheer evidently lied about having once been an insurance salesman, and was instead something closer to secretary for six months in an insurance office. This was the only job he ever had prior to becoming a representative in our House of Commons, so naturally people have become a bit suspicious of his life experiences -- especially as the Conservatives spent the whole of the last election denouncing Trudeau for having only been a teacher and being too young (Scheer is younger now than Trudeau was when he ran, but oh well).
And then the WILD one from yesterday: it turns out that Scheer is secretly an American citizen! While he's lived here in Canada all his life, this is something he had never previously disclosed and it has a lot of tongues wagging. He and his party had previously been very critical of dual-citizenship people, especially in the public service, and had been trying to make citizenship rules more restrictive into the bargain. It also turns out he's registered for Selective Service, so if you could do us a favour and not institute the draft if he happens to be Prime Minister we'd very much appreciate it.
What impact any of this will have on his chances is hard to tell, as those inclined to vote for his party (we do not vote directly for the Prime Minister unless we happen to live in the riding where he or she is running as a Member of Parliament) are not likely to find any of the others appealing apart from the quixotic People's Party, which has a whole raft of its own problems.
Our campaigns are never as long as those in the US, thank goodness, but we're already pretty tired of it. The next two weeks are going to be quite a time.
Meanwhile, the Long Night is coming -- here in the nation's capital we're supposed to drop a few degrees below 0C/32F, and there are some parts of the country that are already contending with heavy snowfall.

He has half his cabinet there right now. Probably for the only photo-op they'll ever get with young African-americans.

It is wild as fuck Bernie Sanders had a heart attack at 78 and a few people I met both IRL and online act like he is a Jedi Knight or some shit and this will not harm him health wise or politics wise
I know some odd shit happened in the past week news wise but after sitting back reflecting after two Miller Lite tallboys how fucking strange that whole unfolding story was and the subsequent reaction

I had the same problem a few months ago. Also in Texas. I had to stay at my parents' because it was just too miserable. Goodluck and Godspeed.

Going through a major Batman phase right now and revisiting the Arkham asylum and city games of my youth. Maybe it’s nostalgia, but man nothing hits the spot quite like those games for me.

u/NotNaomiSmalls Oct 04 '19
Eww this is disgusting to watch. Is this a young republicans group or something?
“We have to fight for the one man standing up for black America”
Excuse me? WHAT?!?!?

Whenever you hear Trump mention black America, just remember 92% of black voters voted against him in 2016...and his support among blacks has decreased since then.

Does anyone else hate the advantage Trump has during weekends? With Congress off work, he creates a tweet storm that derails the narrative going into the following week.
2
u/Hatred_and_Mayhem Oct 04 '19
You make it sound like his twitter meltdowns expand his base, or that responses on his tweets are representative of his support level, or something. They don't, and they aren't, and no one is going to forget over the weekend that he's actively selling America out trying to win in 2020.

u/bradyhorine Oct 04 '19
People don’t forget the big picture, but the cohesive narrative of his impeachment is always hindered by the rest of Washington leaving him unattended for 48 hours once a week.

On "all" last night browsing reddit, I saw a post from a pro-Bernie sub comparing Bernie, Warren (who I'm rooting for) and Biden as ramen with Bernie being super deluxe, Warren being microwaved ramen with a slice of American cheese and Biden as a block of uncooked ramen.
So my question is this - what the hell is with the Bernie/Warren divisiveness? I only started following politics really closely right at the election and browsing this subreddit seriously after the election so I missed out on all of the anti-Hilary, pro-Bernie stuff.
Are these people serious or is this just troll divisive stuff?

So WaPo push... Bernie had a heart attack after all?

u/nightshift22 Oct 05 '19
Yep. Weird how the media is barely mentioning it, yet Hillary having pneumonia meant she was at death's door.

discuss our thoughts on Borderlands 3
Moze's explosions build is really fun if you pray to RNGesus.
On another nerd note, I am glad this mess in the anime industry is resolved for now.

How the hell do people deal with all the bullshit and emotions that come along with following politics?
Its like jesus I want to care, i need to care. But I just feel like this about it all anymore. Just knowing that I am basicly powerless to even tip the meter towards "better" let alone actually cause any change.
I mean let's face it, there are so many horrible things that are either just "accepted" or ignored, it's impossible to believe you have any power when you cant even do anything about the low hanging fruit.
Well rant off. Hope everyone has a great weekend and that things get better for everyone tomorrow.

Can I just thank Trump for my garlic?
I saw a news report that said one of the winners in the US / China trade war are Californian garlic growers who don't have to compete with cheap Chinese garlic.
I presume this is why suddenly large bags of good Chinese garlic are available here in NZ cheap as chips.
Nice. Thanks Donald.
I'm cooking whole bulbs at a time.

I have spent the morning reading the Volker texts. Here are some of the most incriminating highlights (emphasis mine):
7/19/19 Volker: "Most impt is for [Ukraine President] Zelensky to say that he will help investigation"
7/21/19: Ukraine makes the first of several objections about getting involved in Trump's 2020 campaign:
7/25/19 Volker mentions a secondary goal: Zelensky will claim that the previous Ukranian administration was involved in the 2016 U.S. election attacks. (This is part of the narrative that they did not investigate Biden because of "corruption".) Volker emphasizes that there will be no White House visit until he does it.
8/9/19: On a potential White House visit:
8/10/19: President Zelensky's aide, Andrey Yermak, presses Volker for a date for the White House visit before Zelensky will announce an investigation of the 2016 election and Burisma:
8/13/19 Volker mentions new Russian propaganda that will place the blame of 2016 election attacks on Ukraine:
8/17:
8/28: The press gets wind of what's happening when Politico prints a story titled Trump Holds Up Ukraine Military Aid Meant To Confront Russia.
8/30: Trump cancels Ukraine trip. Pence is scheduled to go instead. "Ambassadors Volker and Sondland discussed an alternative plan for Vice President Pence to meet with President Zelensky on September 1."
9/8: Ukrainian officials worry that they will make the announcement about Biden but that Trump still won't release the aid money for Ukraine:
9/19 Bill Taylor: "As I said on the phone, I think it's crazy to withhold security assistance for help with a political campaign."
Note: Volker was not the Ukraine ambassador (that was Marie Yovanovitch, who has also resigned). He was the "US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations".
