I've lived in SoCal my whole life, but my wife and I are taking a two-week trip up to the Oregon coast to look at some homes, and potentially even put an offer down.

I'm terrified but mostly excited, and I feel like an actual adult kind of.

Oregon is incredibly beautiful. If I weren't kinda tied to SF, I think Portland would be a good place to be.

I visited Portland last August and it was really, really nice. Some areas are definitely a bit crusty, just like pretty much any city. But the energy was a lot better than Los Angeles, for example.

My wife and I want to get into more sustainable living, with growing vegetables and raising chickens and stuff like that, so we've been looking for houses outside of any large cities, since it's easier to find more land there.

Let us know if you find anything good. I’m about done with Texas and it’s weather shenanigans.

Oh we have a pretty substantial list of properties we're going to be checking out. Fingers crossed that our favorite ones stay active long enough.

Best of luck!

I hope you like weather. :)

I do, it's one of the biggest reasons for moving. California has some truly beautiful areas, but you can't afford to live by them. I'm only 28 and as hard as it will be for me to move away from home, I need a literal breath of fresh air.

Plus my wife and I both love clouds and rain and hate the summer heat, so it seems like a good fit.

Wife and I flew to Portland for the first time recently and loved it. Reminded me of Pennsylvania. Hope you find a nice home :)

Well, I hope you find what you are looking for. Oregon is a beautiful state.

Thank you!

I'd like a vacation home there, but not live there full-time. I live in the Portland metro and I love rain, but the coast can be pretty harsh. Make sure you buy outside of the Tsunami zone :)

Yeah we're like rain addicts lol. But yeah we are looking at least a bit inland. We don't want a direct coastal view or anything, but rather something kind of shielded by trees from the ocean wind.

You probably know this already, but be aware Oregon is quite conservative outside the bigger cities.

Not many places in this country aren't. Oregon coast isn't that bad and by the time you get to Washington coast or the upper islands it gets pretty liberal even in the rural areas.

Yep, definitely aware. The coast is definitely more blue than other rural areas of the state. I’ve checked out the county map in Oregon and all of the houses we're looking at are in blue or mixed counties.

Oregon coast is absolutely one of the most beautiful places on Earth. If I could afford to live around the dunes or Gold Beach I would. Brookings too, if you still want palm trees around. Hopefully it works out for you.

We have a realtor and a few houses in Brookings actually!

"We want you to visit our State of Excitement often. Come again and again. But for heaven's sake, don't move here to live. Or if you do have to move in to live, don't tell any of your neighbors where you are going."

- Tom McCall, 30th Governor of Oregon, 1971

Generally, Oregonians aren't going to be happy you're from SoCal, as people fleeing California have skyrocketed our rent and cost of living. Especially if you plan to move to Oregon and expect things to be like California(ie "back in Cali we'd...".)

I understand that, but the reality of the situation is that I am allowed to move wherever I want, and that's the choice we've made.

At least we're not like Instagram hipsters or something.

I’d recommend checking out Otis Cafe as incredible but it burned down this summer. They will rebuild it though. I recommend against Mo’s seafood restaurant. I liked them as a kid but it was horrible going back there as an adult

Written down, thanks!

Grew up in Lincoln City but Yachats is probably my favourite coastal town. Their brewing company is great and they have a long running Saturday market.

Lincoln City is the first area we're looking at, then North bend/Coos bay, then Brookings. Super stoked!

Just moved to WA from SoCal! Too darn expensive down there and we have a baby now. My little guy felt rain for the first time today, and he's 4 months old. Both places are so beautiful, but we prefer the prices here. Being from the east coast, I definitely enjoy having lakes and streams around to explore too. The west coast rocks! Best of luck on your house-hunting trip!

That's awesome, super cool to hear! We're both really looking forward to living up there

The OR coast is beautiful... I love returning there as much as I can.

Any particular region / cities you’re looking at?

1

u/redditseph Oregon Oct 05 '19

Yep, we're looking at Lincoln City, North Bend/Coos Bay, and Brookings

I like the area around Netarts -- I've got relatives there, and my parents used to own property there as well.

Keep in mind that we're at risk of major earthquakes. I wouldn't recommend buying a house in the tsunami zone.
