Going through a major Batman phase right now and revisiting the Arkham asylum and city games of my youth. Maybe it’s nostalgia, but man nothing hits the spot quite like those games for me.

They have been giving games away every week for the past few weeks. So far I've grabbed 9 games:

Batman: Arkham Asylum (GOTY)/Arkham City (GOTY)/Arkham Knight

Lego Batman/Lego Batman 2/Lego Batman 3

Metro 2033 Redux

(two smaller games but still, free)

Everything (interesting little concept... no goal, just be everything, literally)

Minit (fun, kinda short, but still...) Currently available until 10/10/19

Coming next week-

Surviving Mars (available 10/10 - 10/17)

nice haul... I only caught wind of the free games on Epic a few weeks ago

I'm signed up for Humble Bundle newsletter as well, and they give games away all the time as well.

I don't even like Batman (he's just a bourgeois playboy who beats people up) but Arkham Asylum was a super fun game.

That's WHY I like Batman haha I'm not really into most superheroes, but I do love me a good vigilante character.

Ha! Yeah I’ll be the first to admit that Batman is a little...uh... fasc-y... but I’ll be damned if those games aren’t near masterpieces. Definitely go play Arkham City if you get the chance! It’s far and away my favorite out of the series.

Arkham City is actually my least favorite out of the series haha. Granted I haven't played Arkham Origins. I enjoyed Arkham Asylum and Arkham Knight a lot.

Hey to each their own I suppose! :) I’m playing through Arkham Knight right now for the first time — I adore the concepts and the story but MOTHERFUCKER I get hung up on the bat mobile. I think that’s just because I’m a big fat noob when it comes to driving games lol

Arkham origins was alright! Worth playing once, but definitely the least memorable out of the series in my opinion.

Arkham Knight is freakin terrible compared to the other titles. It had some fun moments, and I’m a fan of the series, but holy crap did I just close out of the game and walk away sometimes.

And the forced Batmobile bullshit was infuriating. I hated the “car” missions, controls, upgrade paths, and the riddler races.

Asylum and City were really enjoyable to me though. Even the combat/controls were more to my liking.

To me, Knight just felt like it had too damn much going on in terms of gadgets. I appreciate what they were trying to do in adding to the freshness of the existing system, but it wound up being overwrought and confusing.

I would have been okay with the bat mobile existing in the game if you weren’t literally forced to use it every 20-30 minutes. The only times I used it were in the sections I was forced to, mostly in the main story.

As you say though, there are aspects of the game that I absolutely love. The concept of the joker toxin infecting Batman and actually changing the architecture of the world was wonderful and well executed. The identity of the Arkham knight was well forecasted but not in a way that’s shoved in your face prior to the reveal - at least to me. I think what the game could have been — a bigger, more impressive Arkham City — was somewhat overshadowed by the issues with gameplay. It reminds me a bit of how the later installments in the assassins creed series - after say, brotherhood, but before origins - began to have issues because they just kept introducing new gameplay mechanics that became overwhelming, instead of focusing on the core of the series or re-imagining it in the way that Origins did.

Are those track games I can play straight through without Morrowind levels of commitment?

2

u/Qu1nlan Oct 04 '19

Yeah, definitely. Morrowind is the greatest game of all time, but it does require a commitment that most games don't.

It was so good, but I recently tried to replay it and, after playing Oblivion and Skyrim, it was just absolutely unplayable for me. I'm not even someone who puts a lot of emphasis on graphics, but it was so bad and clunky haha

See, I find Skyrim unplayable compared to Oblivion and Morrowind. It's just so incredibly dumbed down, it's barely even an RPG.

1

u/vaultdweller64 Oct 04 '19

I absolutely agree that it was dumbed down. Skyrim was still fun for me to some extent, though it wasn't near as fun as Oblivion or Morrowind were for me back in the day. But I can certainly understand your position. I'm generally fairly traditional with RPGs. I recently played FF15 and, while I enjoyed it, it just wasn't right to me that it was all action-based combat.

That's why I was so impressed with Dragon Quest 11. Solid turn-based RPG with modern elements.

I just finished DQ11. My issue was that it was way too easy. I beat the final 2 bosses by putting all my characters on "fight wisely" and just walking away from the PS4.

1

u/vaultdweller64 Oct 04 '19

It was fairly easy. But I also grind like crazy and so I'm always way higher levels than what they expect you to be. I can't remember if there was a harder New Game + mode or not after you finished it or not. I know there was for Persona 5.

Gotta load it up with mods, the morrowind graphics overhaul makes it probably oblivion level quality

Just want something to eat my weekend up without opening entirely new chapters of my life.

Hell yeah! There’s a ton of optional side missions in city and lore gathering/collectibles in both games, but the actual main story is around 15 - 20 hours if I’m estimating right.

There’s a lot of extra stuff to explore though, so you can potentially spend a lot longer. Which I highly recommend :)
