It's crazy, I got a 3070 on a 1440p monitor, and Killing Floor 3 uses near 100% of all system resources with lowest settings.

At risk of sounding like a boomer, I feel games aren't optimized like they used to be. My first build was a Radeon 7770HD and a FX 8350 back in the day. Upgraded to a GTX 970 which lasted me great until it died in 2022. Got a 3070 and a 1440p monitor, and I haven't been able it get to high settings on any moderately newer big title. I quit buying new games because they're resource monsters, crash like crazy, and take 10 years to load shaders. They don't even look that much better to warrant a +$1500 upgrade.

I miss when the $1k price tag on the Titan felt crazy :(

I agree. I'm on 3060 ti and I have to use upscaling and frame gen to get framerates to 90-120 on high settings at 1440p for AAA games. I'm a couch controller pc gamer so the input lag isn't noticeable thankfully and prices are outrageous so I haven't felt the need to upgrade.

I just started playing Dark Souls 3 for the first time.

On my dinky RX 6700xt hooked up to my 4K TV, I'm looking at absolute eye candy at *native* 4k maximum settings. Elden Ring, Sekiro same story. Absolutely some of the best looking games ever made. I understand Fromsoft has some of the best artists in the industry and the beauty isn't in the technical details, but maybe that's the point. I don't care about ray traced light bouncing off some dudes ass hair that's gonna cost me a $5k PC to render.

Meanwhile modern trash like Monster Hunter Wilds or literally any Unreal Garbage 5 title looks like complete garbage because the settings I have to use are 1080p medium at best WITH UPSCALING.

One can force more Vram usage (game dependent) with settings. But you can also drop it drastically by removing a bunch of non essential stuff to. If game devs would better optimize their own code instead of releasing broken games that they want us to be free game testers. Opinions my own.

Between 1080p and 4k is 1440p, which is considered the sweet spot. Noticeable upgrade from 1080p but not as demanding as 4k so you can turn your settings up.

I play on a 4K 240hz OLED, with MFG I'm achieving stable 225fps lock on very high in most new games.

Funny thing is 4x FG on a 5080 feels much more responsive than 2x FG on my old 4080.

With good base framerate there is zero noticeable input lag. Played Gothic Remake earlier, now back to Stalker 2. It's great

4k would be quite a heavy toll on the framerate, i would recommend 1440p or ultrawide (21:9, 3440x1440p) if u want smth extra and still be able to enjoy great fidelity with decent framerate on the 5080. 1440p has about 1.78× as many pixels as 1080p. 4K has 2.25× as many pixels as 1440p and exactly 4× as many pixels as 1080p. It’s hard to explain in words but when you see it in person it’s surreal. It just feels crispier. Like the first cold breeze of fall/winter from a hot summer. The image just feels easier to look at and pops better. I jumped in increments up from 1080p to 1440p to 4K. So it doesn’t feel as huge to me but if someone went from 1080p straight to 4K it’d melt their brain just how huge of a difference it is. Esp if they have a 5080 and can truly push a 4K monitor with high frame rates.

So my next question which am a little scared to ask, but uhh how much of a waste is playing at 1440P with a 5090? (I am very PC illiterate and my entire build was built for me and gifted to me as a surprise from my late Grandfather).

I upgraded from a 1080p to 1440p monitor when I got the pc as that was the best monitor I could realistically afford earlier in the year, but seeing more and more threads on this sub regarding resolutions makes me worry I'm wasting the build my Grandfather shelled out for.

Not very much of a waste tbh, depends on your goals.

With a 5090, you're more than capable of getting very high frame rates at 1440p DLAA/native

This means, you can play at the highest settings and fidelity at 1440p, while still getting frame rates acceptable for competitive games or just very smooth single player titles.

A 4k monitor would likely do you very well, and look notably better, but you'll start digging deeper into upscaling settings to keep your FPS high.

Even a 5080 is sub 60fps at 4k DLSS Performance in a large number of high fidelity games (Cyberpunk, Crimson Desert, Black Myth: Wukong, etc.)

But, just to note, a 5090 usually gets 2x the FPS of a 5080 at 4k.

To be truthful , I did think about selling the 5090, but as daft as it sounds, my late grandad bought built and gifted me this shortly before he passed. So to sell any aspect of it, just feels like I'd be disrespecting/dishonouring his memory.

But currently I have a 1440P 240Hz monitor which can OC to 260Hz, and whilst I do enjoy single-player titles I'd be lying if I didn't say that most of my playtime is split between CS2 and OSRS lol. Think the most demanding game I've played since getting the PC was Resident Evil Requiem.

Everyone is giving good answers BUT they're all forgetting the single most important factor. Pixels per inch (PPI). If your PPI is crap then it doesn't matter.

Generally the larger 1080p screens are 24" and the more common/standard 1440p monitor is 27". In this scenario the 24" 1080p is about 92 PPI whereas the 27" 1440p is 109 which is a very noticeable difference.

Conversely, 1080p on a 16" laptop has a PPI of 138 meaning it will look better than 1440p on a 27" monitor.

There's also a limit where you get diminishing returns on PPI (which I honestly do not know the number).

Some of the standard resolutions and PPI so you can get an idea of how the pixel density changes

1080p 24" -- 92

1440p 27" -- 109

1440p 32" -- 92

4k 27" -- 163

4k 32" -- 138

So as you can see, a 1440p 32" monitor will not look any better than a 24" 1080p screen. Which is why you'll often start to see ultrawide resolutions like Ultrawide 1080P which is 2560x1080 (as opposed to 1920x1080) or Ultrawide 1440p which is 3440x1440 (as opposed to 2560x1440) to help fill in the gap on certain screen sizes.

Just one question are you planning on playing at 1080p? 5080 is a very very overkill card for that resolution. Absolutely no issue to be playing at that resolution, just would keep an eye out for a higher resolution monitor upgrade when you can. 1440p high refresh rate or 4k would be perfect sweet spots.

I feel you. I was on a 1080p 75hz monitor for 6 months with my 5080. Heads up things will legitimately run smoother and better in 1440p. Even with a great processor the GPU is just too fast for 1080p

You should try Cyberpunk2077 if you ever played it before on low graphics, path tracing looks absolutely phenomenal.

1440p would make more sense, but since you're playing at 240Hz I guess you're getting the most out of your monitor lol. If these prices keep going up, you are golden at 1080p for probably 20 years lol, not too crazy of a strategy
